"High yellow" is an extremely light skin black person. In context of its use in the movie, the character that said it is implying that the person might be trying to pass for white but secretly be black. At the time, in America, that was a crime. It's often referred to as "passing".
@audraross3012

It's good Ashleigh you haven't even heard the terms high yellow or mulatto in terms of biracial or mixed race people, esp with your accent sounding like you're in the south too. I grew up in PA and knew these terms. We have made progress in a generation. Also it was totally normal to use the r-word for intellectually disabled kids in the 1980s - even professionals used it. It started becoming pejorative after that.

The original "Hairspray" is way better than the remake. Sono Bono, Devine, Debbie Harry - and it was actually filmed in Baltimore where it was set ( instead of Canada). Lawrence Welk had a TV show for years that played old fashioned music - it was pretty hokey. The June Taylor Dancers were on the Jackie Gleason Show, which was a popular variety show back then. "High Yellow" was a racist term to describe an African-American who had very light skin. Mulatto is an old term for someone who is mixed race white/black.

Divine was one of the OG drag icons. When she passed away, every remake or reiteration of Hairspray had a man in drag as Edna as a homage to Divine. We went from this movie to the original Broadway show with Harvey Fierstein as Edna to the movie with John Travolta. Fierstein is a multi Tony award winning actor (he won for Hairspray) and writer best known for writing "Torch Song Trilogy", "La Cage aux Folles" (aka "The Birdcage"), "Newsies" and "Kinky Boots" on Broadway. For musicals, he usually writes the book and collaborates for the music.

HE. Gay men do drag. They are only pretending to be women not trying to be women. At the time of this movie, if a man was trying to be a woman, they would have been a transvestite. one may also note that Divine has a second part to play in this as Arvin Hodgepile (32:15) being booed by Ashleigh at 32:31, as reviled by the end credits at 36:10 much to her amazement.

Fun Fact: Ricki Lake, who played Tracy Turnblad in the movie had a popular talk show in the 90s back when afternoon talk shows like Jerry Springer, Sally Jesse Raphael, Jenny Jones and Geraldo were all the rage. Tracy's mom is played by Divine, who was a drag queen and a longtime collaborator of Roger Waters. Divine also starred in Waters' breakout film Pink Flamingos, a movie which I do not recommend showing on your channel. Not because it's bad, but because its content might get you kicked off KZbin. Tracy's dad is played by the legendary Jerry Stiller, who you may know as Frank Costanza on Seinfeld and who is also the father of actor Ben Stiller. Finally, the therapist that was poking Penny with the prod (say that three times fast) was played by John Waters himself. What happened to James Bond? Devine is an icon. He is often mistakenly referred to as trans. There is a really unfortunate recent trend of erasing trans people, like Marcia P Johnson, as though they were cis gay drag queens. Johnson was 100% a trans woman. But it's also true that not every drag queen is trans and Devine is an example. He didn't even really consider himself a drag queen. It was a role he played in John Waters movies and he wanted to play male roles too, but his career in his short life never really afforded him the opportunity.

The “June Taylor Dancers” were a troupe of female dancers who got their start performing live but became most famous for being on The Jackie Gleason Show in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Each dancer could perform numerous different styles of dance and often wore elaborate costumes and made complex kaleidoscopic choreographed patterns which were filmed from overhead cameras. The founder June Taylor received an Emmy award for choreography in 1955.

Sonny Bono was married to Cher. They were together about 12 years - as a singing couple, married, had a child, appeared on numerous tv shows. After their divorce in 1975, he married again and had a career as a politician and Cher is still performing as a singer, actor and fashion icon. Sonny died in 1998 as a result of a skiing accident. If you have seen the film “Groundhog Day”, you heard them sing one of their more well-known songs: ‘I’ve Got You Babe.’

Ashleigh may we introduce you to legendary drag queen, Divine! Her look inspired Disney baddie, Ursula. Hair spray was the creation of John Waters life growing up in Baltimore. John and Divine were besties growing up and both openly gay even when it was taboo. Mink Stole was another regular. Sonny Bono was Cher's ex hubby and both formed the 60s duo Sonny and Cher. Sonny and Cher had a daughter who later transitioned into Chad Bono. Debbie Harry is the lead singer of Blondie and at 77 still tours. Without her influence we wouldn't have Madonna or Lady Gaga. She was a punk, new wave icon. She still looks fabulous.

The remake, was good, but the original, captures what the story is supposed to be. Sonny Bono, was married to Cher. They were the duo, Sonny and Cher! John Waters, was the psychiatrist. I fear that you are simply too young to get the full "vibes" of the movie. That is not your fault, Ashleigh! You just had to be there, to understand the full meaning.

The big man on the news at the fair who said "If one black face gets on camera this shows off the air." is also Divine, one of the very few times he was seen out of drag. He had a very good musical career. I saw him in a Nightclub in Edmonton, Alberta around 1986 called Goose Loonies. Interesting trivia fact: there was a teen heart throb actor in the early 60's named Tab Hunter, who played the biology teacher in Grease Two, and he and Divine were life partners and acted together in a lot of John Waters films.

Sonny was serving in Congress when he died (Jan. 5, 1998). Less than a week earlier (Dec. 31, 1997), Michael Kennedy, one of RFK's children, had *_ALSO_* died by skiing into a tree. Michael didn't hold elected office, but he had worked in politics before, including organizing his uncle Ted Kennedy's successful Senate re-election campaign a few years earlier in 1994. After Kennedy and Bono both died by skiing into trees in the same week, I was keeping a sharp eye out for another political figure to die by skiing into a tree, since they say deaths come in threes...

Teasing your hair was called ratting your hair because women used to use a "rat" or a piece of material that was stuffed (or made of horsehair) and properly shaped and placed under the hair to create large hairstyles that are hard to keep properly shaped without help. Aerosol hairspray did away with the need for hair rats. The terminology changed to teasing your hair once rats were no longer popularly used and no one knew what it meant. lol

The remake is not so much a remake as it is a cinematic adaptation of the stage adaptation of the original film. Like "The Producers". Ricki Lake went on to host a popular daytime talk show for a few years. Yes, that was George's dad from "Seinfeld" (before he was George's dad from "Seinfeld"). Sonny Bono, who played Amber's father, was Cher's ex-husband. They had performed as a singing duo back in the 60s and hosted a variety show both before and after their divorce. Amber's mother was the lead singer of Blondie. Wilt Chamberlain was a basketball player who, later in life, became as famous for his claims of having slept with 20,000 women as for his basketball skills. The doctor with the cattle prod who was shocking Penny was the film's director, John Waters himself.
