I grew up in the 80's and there was a community center a few blocks from our house. It had two playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, large open fields, pretty much everything a kid could want back then. I can't remember how young we were when we were allowed to walk or ride our bikes there by ourselves, but it was pretty young. Middle elementary school age.

Rick Moranis was the coolest nerd of the 80s. Fun Fact: He retired from acting so he could spend more time with his kids after his wife died. F cancer. Fun Fact #2: Russell the neighbor is played by Matt Frewer, who is best known in the cultural zeitgeist as the stuttering cyberpunk AI and 80s icon Max Headroom. An air hammer is a kind of power tool and yes, Ashleigh, lack of supervision was one of my generation's defining traits. How else were we supposed to learn not to play baseball with a beehive?

I'm 37 and this was a huge part of my childhood. When I was 9, I went to Disneyworld for the first time, and in the park that is now called Hollywood Studios, they had a Honey I Shrunk The Kids land, with the grass, the bowl, the oatmeal pie, and more. It was so much fun. They also had a place that showed you how they made the bee flying scene, and epcot had "Honey I Shrunk The Audience". It was such a good time. One thing I didn't get until YEARS later, that you didn't get either, when Big Russ was about to shrink, his wife found his Cigarettes, that he kept under his hat. When he unshrunk, his had didn't fit anymore. As a kid I thought what you thought, that he was smaller than he was. But now I get it, his wife threw away the cigarettes, so the hat covered his eyes because there wasn't anything keeping it up. XD

Gen-x here, and your comments about parents in the 80s letting their kids free range made me laugh. I grew up in a littttle tiny town in rural Michigan, and was home schooled for the better portion of elementary school. We were in the woods ALL. DAY. EVERY. DAY. Miles from home, just wandering and exploring. I remember shooting tin cans in the dunes, following the railroad tracks, biking into the tiny town to the meat market for candy bars and pop or to a friend's house to ride horses....what a life. As a 90s kid I'm glad I got to experience it. Never had my parents drop me off or walk me to school, at least after kindergarten. Local video rental place would let us rent with just our name and address, unless it was rated R then they had to call our parents. Spending our allowance+lawn mowing money on food or at the hobby shop. Playing all sorts of games in the street (admittedly, a cul-de-sac). Rode my bike about 5000 miles a year according to the speedometer I had on it just going everywhere. Swimming all summer. We also had video game time inside but it was in balance with a wider life.

You're gonna watch the first Muppet movie? YAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!! Edit: And you're in for a ride with Buffy. The show's badass! You gotta start Angel when you finish season 3, though, because those two shows often cross over with each other. You can look up the viewing order for the crossover episodes online when you get to it. Angel is starting out a little slow, but I think it's pretty good so far. As for Venom's debut solo film, oh man, that's a good one!

You know, I'm just now realizing how much research had to go into making this movie. I imagine the production team had to look at several different objects under a microscope to help build props and sets to scale. Nowadays it can just be done digitally, which under the right direction could look pretty neat, but it wouldn't be the same.

Years ago at Disney there was a Honey I Shrunk the Kids experience. You walked through an oversized yard and stuff like that. There was one part of the experience they would choose some kids to reenact the bee scene. Me and my sister got picked so we were harnessed to a large mechanical bee against a green screen. Little Russ (Thomas Brown) got his start as the nephew, Augie, in “Silverado” which starred Kevin Costner, Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, & Danny Glover with Jeff Goldblum, John Cleese, Brian Dennehy, Linda Hunt, Jeff Fahey, & Rosanna Arquette. FYI…the song “Rosanna” by Toto was written about her. David Arquette (Dewey in the “Scream” movies) is her brother. Marcia Straussman mainly did TV so you’ll see her in a lot of tv series, but she co-starred in “Welcome Back, Kotter” which launched the career of John Travolta.

38:45 Ashleigh: "I think this movie would have been so much fun to be on the set" Disney executives along with audiences who saw this movie back in the day thought the same thing, which resulted in Disney creating a "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" side attraction at Disney World (Magic Kingdom, MGM or Universal studios if I remember correctly). IDK if they still have it, but there you could ride Anty, explore the earthworm hole, wander and slide through the blades of grass, and encounter Quark's nose (All of which I did in the 90's with my family). If its still there, you should pay a visit.
