We do run 5w40 as well and the engine is noticeable smoother, both on our LR3 and LR4 Diesel. I do think that only a C3 for DPF or a A3B3 oil for non-DPF should be used. Most others have the reduced HTHS. Sure, the disadvantage is small but avoidable this way until these classifications are phased out. I also researched engine failures and found nearly no 5w40 vehicles with bearing failures. Most failures are 5w30 LR maintained with 15t or more km intervals. I also do think that the driving behavior plays a bigger role for the TDV6 then maintenance. Thanks for your video.

I also moved to 5w40 many years ago, but that was mainly driven from looking at the oil temp while towing in summer. Sump oil temp gets up around 125degC when working it hard so I figured at the time the 40 grade would hold more film strength over the 30 grade

Quite possibly the most useful comparison for Land Rover Discovery TDV6 engine on the t'interweb. (No turtles were mentioned in the making of this comment 😉)

Thanks champ, I do get sick of seeing many of the oil related posts and comments around FB and forums where people think just use the LR spec oil, and the fact is its now an outdated spec and there are better oil specs that can be used. I didnt quite get the views I thought this video would have, but its still ticking them over

Learnt a lot there only watched coz i topped up with 10w_40 semi i had lying around yesterday, figure correct amount of oil is better than running short, tru k done 200'000 miles. Will try the merc spec next oil change

oh 100% any oil is better than no oil!

@@Shanes_Shed BTW would change grade for higher miles? I'm in UK so temperature isn't an issue
@Shanes_Shed8 ай бұрын
unlike other youtubers Im not against 5w30 as a viscosity grade, as long as the oil has a decent spec. using a 40grade wont hurt, but i dont think its a necessity to change it just because of higher mileage

Love the vids mate,. I have a D3, MY08 TDV6 2.7 with transplanted territory donk. Have just gone over to penrite HPR5 5W-40 (Full Synthetic), Key Specifications: MB 229.5., ACEA A3/B4, API SP. Assuming this one is correct for my old Disco. cheers Peter

Hi Peter, thanks for the comment. I wouldn’t have an issue using that oil. Haven’t personally used it in my disco but I should have access to used oil sometime this year to get analysis done to see how it goes in the disco engine

@@Shanes_Shed cool. Which one are you using?

At the moment, valvoline synpower MST 5W40

What oil would you use in an L319 LR3 4.4l petrol engine with high mileage? I've been using 5w30 (Amsoil) dutifully but wondering about the 5w40, since we live in the American Southwest. Tanks!
@Shanes_Shed Жыл бұрын
I believe Amsoil is generally a good product, rarely used in Australia as its just not an easy brand to get a hold of here. If looking at off the shelf type oils I'd look for a reputable brand with one of the 3 specs I recommend at the end of the video. In regards to viscosity a 5w30 is generally an ok choice for a stock vehicle driven normally, but bumping up to the 40 isn't a bad thing if you regularly put a little more heat load into the oil (heavy towing, hot environments etc...)
@ChristofBove Жыл бұрын
@@Shanes_Shed Thanks! We are American Southwest with high summer temps. We tow occasionally and do lots of long haul drives. I’ve noticed that 5w30 is often like water.
@Shanes_Shed Жыл бұрын
@@ChristofBove Similar reasons why I initially changed over to 5w40. I noticed when towing our camper trailer oil temps (pulled through OBDII GAP tool) where often up around 120degC when working hard. 100degC is the temp where oil viscosity is rated at

@10:42 same here, keep my cars longer, prefer anti-wear properties to fuel economy. Clearly, chasing fuel economy as your priority for oil selection is at the cost of extra engine wear.
@Shanes_Shed2 жыл бұрын
On the plus side we are slowly working towards having the best of both. But the fact is the low viscosity oils only net a 1-2% improvement on fuel economy so not really worth it currently
