I love how some of the soundtrack is really odd (and moody) reharmonizations of previous Zelda game's themes. For example, the temple of time is now in ruins and you almost can't tell that the actual temple of time motif from ocarina of time is still in it. It's really well executed. Sounds like the memory of a place. Ruined, just like it is in the game.

It's such joy to come along for your journey and learn from such an inspiring human being! Please keep it up! You're really one of the people helping me to shift my focus back to music from a boring office job. I have a degree in musicology but never really worked in that field, which I'm looking to change now. Somehow, you manage to present everything at a very high level that one might think would just be daunting and intimidating, but it's all so wonderfully accessible and comforting! No one else can be this good and still so motivating! With your knowledge and perspective on music, you show what is possible without making it seem impossible, if that makes sense. This comment relates to your channel in general , but this topic in particular was tackled many times on youtube, but never by a pianist who comes from a comparatively neutral angle, not having been a fan of the series for years. Very interesting! Thank you so much for your awesome work! You are truly enriching my life and surely many other's!

@@SerpongeDash The question implies the answer, and the implication is false. If you have nothing but good things to say about something and you angle the title towards negativity, then that's drawing attention purely by implying controversy. And when the video then immediately renders the question irrelevant and actually has nothing to yell about at all, that's clickbait. Great video nonetheless.

One of the best parts of the Zelda soundtrack isn't just that the music itself is incredibly beautiful and perfectly fitting for each situation, but also that many of the melodies and motifs have a looooong history in the franchise, each being emotionally loaded with so many feelings from previous games, and hearing the new interpretations of them in BotW in new contexts makes it so much more impactful than just "this is a pretty musical phrase". And gosh dang, your arrangement is GORGEOUS! I gotta relisten to that until I have it memorized.

I've always wanted to support you in some way (but I'm not a fan of monthly suscriptions like Patreon), so being able to support you by buying your book is amazing! Not only does it make me happy being able to contribute, but I get the chance to learn from, what I personally believe to be, a modern musical genius. I heard your rendition and I like to imagine that you're playing the music in the order in which you experienced it. First with the opening where you first see Hyrule from upon the cliff, then immediately picking a fight with that goblin down the hill, then briefly finding relief from the battle only to be met with another foe. Then, finding the glider and floating through the sky, exploring, learning more about what happened in the past from the great beasts to Calamity Ganon to the fall of the champions. I also like to imagine that you did a ton of exploration on your horse just based off of the many staccato sections, flipping to legato, then back to staccato again. I absolutely love how it sounds like different excerpts of the soundtrack spliced and thrown into a mixer and how it's as if you're excitedly telling a friend about your time playing Breath of the Wild from recalling many different moments in the game. Then, the end is like the feeling you get when you finish a good book or an awesome show and you're just sitting there going, "Now... what do I do?" At least, that's my interpretation of your rendition. Ha ha! 😅

I do think that the soundtrack is best heard contextualized within the game. So much of the mood is a combination of the visuals, the music, and the foley/environmental sounds. It really puts you into the moment in a way only the best soundtracks do. Both your music and Breath of the Wild evoke similar feelings inside me. Whimsical, intimate, introspective, at times lonely I would love to see a breakdown from your point of view *why* you think people may find some of your music similar from a more technical standpoint, because a lot of us seem to struggle to find the words to adequately explain it. I know that the instrumentation (obviously) plays a big role, along with the arpeggios and the extended chords, but I'm not sure exactly why.

5:03 It's a common convention in eastern video game music to use scale degree "b2" as a leading tone when writing in minor keys. You'll hear bII -> i or bII Maj7 -> i very often, or occasionally other chords that contain the b2 scale degree, such as vii -> i (e.g the battle theme for FF7 opens with a i -> vii -> i progression). I don't know if there are any books on eastern game music theory that might explain why, but my hypothesis is that a lot of the times, they're trying to avoid using chords that contain the tri-tone and save them for places where they want to ramp up the drama to a higher level than usual (though they're more common in modern game music, compared to stuff from the 80's/90's). Thanks for the video! This was awesome.

Your arrangement strangely reminds me of final fantasy 13’s compositions. I love it. It’s mystical yet whimsical at the same time. This kind of content excites me. Thanks for your rendition.

Can I recommend The Consouls for FF jazz covers and in particular this early video (production quality has improved as they have become better known) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2ndq3SMZs5-irs

FFXIII's soundtrack is so good. Never played the game but I bought the soundtrack about a decade ago because it's that good.

Just picked up the book on the discount and so excited to work through it! Thank you Nahre! I also wanted to say you’ve changed my approach to understanding video game music with this video. I’m not much of a gamer but love gaming music, so I’m now on the look for a cheap Switch to play through some games and have more inspiration for my music!

Waow that arrangement gave me some serious chills ! Impressive as always Nahre, I think you really captured the intention of the composers with your piece, it could be the grand finale music in the next Zelda ahah

To add to the comments about reharmonizations of old themes, most of the musical foley-like sounds (e.g., solving a puzzle) have been present in Zelda games since the very original NES title. Many of the neat aspects of the Breath of the Wild OST and the musical experience of the game are iterations on ideas present in other games. There's a reason so many of us love videogame music :)

That was gorgeous. I loved your version. (I don’t play the game.) Aside from your writing, I love listening to your playing.

6:30 bought your book. Let's see your course. Hopefully I can learn from it. Because I've been struggling to learn... Also enjoyed watching you playing piano. Thanks again.

The soundtrack of BotW is absolute genius, as is your breakdown of it. Thank you SO much for taking up the game, and analyzing it with such beauty and grace.

Also, a question to anyone who has an answer: Regarding those short musical themes, like those for solving puzzles, collecting items, or dying. Would it be fair to call them 'motifs?'

It's simple: this OST brings the concept of "soundscape" to a whole other level.

You should check out some of the pieces in the Final Fantasy X Piano Collections. I was reminded of those when you began to play your own piece/variation.

Great video. I love your arrangement, it’s so beautiful and captures so much of breath of the wild. I’d love to try to learn it if I could buy some sheet music for it :)

Wow this was the first video I've seen of yours and I'm thrilled to find your channel. This was so interesting to watch. This franchise is what inspired me to learn piano as a kid, and I love seeing professional musicians break it down. This is one of the best vids I've seen on it! Thank you so much! I've ordered your book and I can't wait to read it!

Final Fantasy Tactics has some great music. Although, it "borrows" a lot from John Williams,, it's still amazing stuff. I recommend it! Excellent, beautiful upload! Thank you for being amazing, Nahre Sol! 🙌

This is something I’ve been waiting years for, often being reminded of your harmonic and rhythmic style when riding horseback in Hyrule. Your interpretation of the main theme is magical, I wish it went on forever. This is a really special video to me and I can’t thank you enough for making it.

If you loved the variety in this Zelda game, you'll love the rest of the series' soundtracks, and JRPGs, too. "Tales of" games, Xenosaga, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and many others. That arrangement at the end is awesome. If you do a whole remix album, I'm sure it would be a hit. 😉 edit: oh, also, I hope you check out Gravity Rush and Gravity Rush 2, their soundtracks are symphonic and pretty great, I especially love the Lei Havina theme: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKHWoJl-eZ12brM

Really loved your arragenment of the main theme! Back in the day before the game was going to release I used to hear it in the trailer very often and bc of the excitement I might have also dropped a tear (not a pun for the sequel). And being so familiar with the main theme of the game listening to your arrangement feels like... kinda glitchy, which is very interesting in the context of a piano arrangement. Feel like you swapped and repeated sections of one hand while keeping the other developing the harmony. Really remarkable! On the note og glitch music, I always have wanted to hear a musicians opinion on edIT's "Crying over pros for no reason" album. Wouldn't be surprised if it was a little too out there for your taste, but that's exactly the reason why I think it could be interesting.

About hearing the game audio blend with the music, I didn’t really realize this until I listened to the battle theme on its own and noticed the bass sound that drops throughout it. I always thought that was me jump attacking with link and hitting the floor really hard. I didn’t realize it was actually the soundtrack. Same goes for the sword slashing sounds in the song. I must’ve just always timed my attacks with it subconsciously but I was really weirded out when I noticed the sounds were there independent of what I was doing.

The picture of Yasuaki Iwata at 1:30 is actually another composer named Ryo Nagamatsu who has worked on other Zelda titles among other Nintendo games! I can't find a picture of Yasuaki Iwata myself but Nagamatsu is another fantastic Nintendo composer who you should check out. In fact, nearly all of the Nintendo composers are simply fantastic, in my opinion.
