It did actually start appearing in devices the same year as the slim launched (2014) but Sony would be reluctant because it would have been expensive at the time and it's too much work for a handheld they considered on the way out.

Sadly, that's now discontinued. When Sony rebranded PlayStation Plus, they also discontinued support for the PS3 and the Vita. You can still play online but things like online saves and PlayStation now won't work
