The new Porsche 718 Cayman S attracted so much hate from the purist that it made me want to see what’s all the fuss about. And immediately there was a problem. A FOUR cylinder engine problem.

Great video. I've driven the 981 a few times and just purchased a 718 Cayman S. The sound is disappointing in the 718 but the massive increase in torque and speed make up for it. I actually couldn't believe how slow the 981 felt after driving my 718.

Porsche has done flat-4 engines before so I am confused on why people are complaining. I prefer a huge V8 on a dually truck, but a sports car is about power to weight ratio. These 718 cars are wonderful! I own a 718 GTS and love it.

Nothing to be sorry about :) If you watched the videos you would have seen that I think this is the perfect sports car. I highly doubt the 0 to 60 time you've posted but other than that, I agree with you. It's pretty much the best Porsche at the moment.

I took delivery of my 718 about a month ago. After having driven a Cayman S for 8 years I can attest to the fact that this car is far and away a better version of what was already a fine sports car. All the hand wringing about the sound is nothing but hot air as this car has it's own identity and a much more aggressive sound is part of it. This is what a sports car becomes when it's all grown up.

Agreed, best car they make. The cayman has always been secretly their best car but they don't want to admit it's better than a 911. If they gave it 100bhp more it would be the fastest porsche available!

Jim Killion, the sound isn't hot air, but the torque, braking and handling should convince purists to accept the turbo sound. (They did with F1.) I've had a 986 & 981, sound I understand your point.

Kudos on the video. I imagine it took a long time to edit and It's well worth it The video is extremely well done. I own a 2017 718 boxster and I absolutely love the looks, handling, and braking The sound could be better buts its really not as bad as people say

The 981 is a great car, but the 7 Cayman s is a near super car with a flat 4. Porsche is taking the world forward. Those with 981s need to look ahead. Electric is the next path for Porsche.

Great review! Having owned a 987 Boxster with the flat 6 I can say I was genuinely disappointed by the decision to go with a turbo 4 in the new 718 cars. At this point I have gotten over my disappointment and have come around to really appreciate how good the 718 cars are and, except for the sound, I think the 718 is a better car in every respect than the 981 and the 987. In fact, I am very seriously considering a 718 Cayman for my next car purchase sometime next year. Thanks for the video and your thoughts.

The sound argument is stupid. It sounds as a flat 4 turbo should. Porsche was built on 4s. The key is to have the manual trans and the full carbon bucket seats. Love my 2019 718 Boxster GTS. Faster than any previous Cayman or Boxster regardless of number of engine cylinders.

Agreed this is perfect, totally love mine and I don't care one hoot about the noise of the flat 6, this has noise (if you need to have it) and it is such an amazing car to drive. Definitely this is the best option.

Your conclusion doesn't make sense? You said it's not special and you'd hesitate to get one ahead of the old model but then said the car is perfect. So which is it? A disappointment or perfect? I have one and it's unreal, what an amazing car to own believe me

Hi Daniel. I actually did not say it's not special. I said it's not as special as the old one. And I still feel that way. More so, I said it's pretty much perfect if you stop looking backwards. So yeah, it's a pretty awesome car to say the least :)
