I purchased this jacket from your Exeter store a few weeks ago and it's a great jacket. I opted for "Jacket" version rather than the "Alpine" version as I didn't want the hood. It's light, comfortable, and warm. I like the chest pocket as it's a great place to clip on a wireless mic (for when I'm making videos). This is a great video for those looking to understand the range. I'd previously read your blog post on this jacket which was super helpful, but you can't beat nipping into the store and trying it on. :-)

Best review by far of this jacket (and I have watched a lot of them) and made my mind up to buy one. I have always wanted a good quality RAB jacket but price has always been the main drawback, especially when you are an OAP! You described very well the additional features and background which makes this (almost) worth the high price, just have to get that over to Mrs Metalman now, or better still, get her to watch this video, cheers Alan

Nice video. How does it compare to a Montane Featherlite down jacket?

If you are a guy with broad shoulders and chest like myself I wouldn’t recommend this jacket as it is not a traditional regular fit, it’s a slim fit. I have Patagonia lightweight down and synthetic jackets in a large and they fit me perfectly. I ordered a large online after seeing good reviews but it is unwearable as it is way too tight across the chest and the torso.

Recycled is 'pushed' by advertisers but tends to be of a much lower standard than the original. Recycled down is also much lower quality than virgin down, because it essentially comes from worn out old gear and smelly bed duvets etc, so needs to be extensively chemically cleaned through several different processes to meet the standards required (which negates the "green environment" tag and makes it farcical). That's why recycled down maximum loft is only 550 -700 fill power. Anything above 700, such as 800+ can only be pure original down plucked direct from the bird.

Hi thanks for the comment, the down in the latest Microlight is 700FP as opposed to 750FP in the old jacket and you get more down now so the warmth is the same for a marginal weight difference. By filling their most popular jacket with recycled down they have saved a considerable amount of down from going to landfill, and the recycled down is still graded and certified by the Global Recycling standard, also according to the Higg Index’s Material Sustainability Index (MSI), recycled down has a lower carbon footprint than virgin down. This data is based upon third-party accredited life cycle assessments of virgin and recycled down, capturing the emissions from all processing stages, including washing. Lower FP down does not make a bad product, but can actually be better depending on where is used, in a workhorse jacket, the Rab Axion for example, a lower FP has the advantage of being more stable and robust, and won’t be compressed by heavy face fabrics like a 800+FP would be. Of course if small pack size and ultra-light weigh are what you are after, then you will want a product with 850-1000FP, with you can find in the Rab Mythic range. These high FP down require more care as the larger clusters are more fragile. We understand that greenwashing certainly is an issue currently and it is difficult to spot what is actually good with all the marketing hype from so many different brands across every sector! I have added a couple of links below for those interested. textileexchange.org/recycled-claim-global-recycled-standard/ apparelcoalition.org/higg-product-tools/

@@tauntonleisure You sound like a WEF publicity agent! 🙄😂 I couldn't give a damn about fake "carbon 👣 footprint" waffle nor the fake global warming or politically motivated corrupt agenda of a 'climate change' that in reality doesn't exist. I also don't particularly want to buy shite that is recycled. As mentioned, I prefer to buy virgin pure duck or goose down products, and other products that are not recycled...mainly because they are generally a superior product.(You're assumption that 800 pure down is somehow more fragile to 650 or 700 recycled down is just nonsense! 🙄). You only have to look at brands such as Rab, and Mountain Equipment, North Face etc to know that their products made prior to jumping on the recycling bandwagon are generally of a much higher quality and can take a lot more outdoor abuse. I own a lot of top-grade clothing from these companies...so my opinions are based on personal longterm testing.

Hello! I'm considering this brand for my extreme winter hike. Upto what temperatures does this down jacket useable. Given that I'll also be wearing thermals & fleece jacket.
@tauntonleisure
@tauntonleisure Жыл бұрын
Hi, this jacket is designed as a mid layer and not for extremely cold temperatures. It is impossible to give a useful temperature rating for a jacket as there are too many variables, windspeed, humidity, activity level, personal tolerances. If you can tell me what temperatures you would be looking at using it at and if you are going to use static or active I can make a better recommendation.

@@tauntonleisure Thanks for clarifying. I'm visiting places which is constantly -15c or below (colder). I'll put the down jacket to use when I'm hiking or on the field filming. Hence I need something which can withstand unto -25c. My thermals & fleece will provide some cover, the down is needed for outdoor use only.

As your main insulation piece at those kind of temperatures you want something much warmer, I would suggest the Rab Infinity or Rab Batura jacket, these are designed with the use you are describing. Hope this helps.
