Great review. But, in your honest opinion, what's the durability of this jacket - I mean will the outer fabric "survive" many hours carrying heavier backpack - straps?
@tauntonleisure2 күн бұрын
Personally, I've had no issues with this jacket-the fabric feels robust and durable. I wore it in Iceland for around eight hours while carrying a heavy pack, and it performed flawlessly. I also relied on it during the Welsh 3000s, where it held up equally well. While I can’t comment on its long-term durability just yet, after six months of testing, I’ve noticed no signs of wear or anything that raises concerns.

Providing a temperature range can be tricky, as everyone experiences cold differently. With some good layers underneath and perhaps a shell on top, this jacket might work for you. It’s mental that it’s unusual to have footwear that’s actually more human foot shaped. Good to see footwear manufacturers waking up to the fact, but most lasts are still too tapered. I suffered for years in all footwear but mainly walking boots. Tailors Bunions and Morton’s neuroma due to footwear that’s based around a tapered toe box, if you choose a ‘wide’ fit the entire boot often ends up higher in volume and unnecessary if you just need space for your foot to splay in the toe box. I ended up with a pair of Vivobarefoot boots(foot shaped, flexible, zero heal-to-toe drop) and eventually switched all my footwear to minimalist options after building up the lower leg and foot strength. Literally life changing, foot problems have completely resolved, along with fixing some back and hip issues, likely due to my pelvis now sitting neutral. Really hope we see more manufacturers making foot shaped footwear, but they don’t look as aesthetically pleasing on the shop display, so I imagine they’ll just keep pumping out what sells. My goodness, I think I’ve gotten onto a rant here. Take care 😆

I wonder what the functional difference is between the cirrus ultra and rab nebula pro, weight seems to be similar.
@tauntonleisure14 күн бұрын
Thank you for your comment. The main difference is the insulation type. The Cirrus Ultra uses Thermoplume, which better mimics down, offering a superior warmth-to-weight ratio, improved pack size, and better temperature regulation. The Cirrus Ultra also employs tilt technology, which further adds to the jacket's warmth.

I brought the microlight 2 weeks ago , I would say 2 things , to give you some idea of how warm the microlight is , I wore a t-shirt underneath in 8 decrees celcius just to test the warmth and after 10 minutes I could feel the cold getting through, If you are want something for a layering this would be great ,if you want a winter coat for the uk as just an outer shell get the Electron the microloght is thin,also hey are bigger than they used to be , the XL is a large Xl.They used to be a nice snug fit.I am 6ft 1 15 stone and the XL is too big and the Large is too tight and short , another reason why im swapping it for the electron.
@tauntonleisure3 күн бұрын
Thank you for your insight. The Microlight is designed as a layering piece, often worn in cold conditions beneath a waterproof shell, which is why the baffles are low profile. It still works great as an outer layer in milder conditions or if you're active and moving in it. However, if you're looking for a jacket that provides instant warmth while standing still, relaxing at camp, or in colder conditions, a warmer option like the Electron you mentioned would be a better choice! It all depends on what you're after in your winter jacket!

I'm pretty interested in the Race S. I have a Garmin Forerunner 165 and the main thing I'm worried about missing is Garmin's Daily Suggested Workouts. You mentioned Suunto will create structured workouts based on the data is has collected. If I want a training plan, will it automatically update the structured workout based on my progress, or will I have to make a new structured workout later to get another workout based on my progress? Thanks! Great video.
@tauntonleisure14 күн бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! The Suunto Race S offers a slightly different approach compared to Garmin’s Daily Suggested Workouts. While it does create structured workouts and training plans based on your fitness data, it doesn’t dynamically adjust the next day’s workout in the same way Garmin does. However, Suunto’s adaptive training plans do monitor your progress and adjust over time, especially if you’re following a specific goal (e.g., improving endurance or speed). If your performance improves or you fall behind, it will tweak the plan accordingly.

Our recommendation would be the Electron Pro. It’s the warmest of the three jackets, featuring Pertex Quantum Pro as the outer fabric, which makes it windproof and highly water-resistant. @andrewhillis8973 I’d recommend the Infinity as your best option. It offers superior warmth, which will be crucial if you’re facing temperatures as low as -20°C, even if it’s only occasionally. Plus, as you mentioned, the GORE-TEX® Windstopper will provide excellent protection against harsh winds, helping to maintain a warmth level comparable to the Electron. It’ll also work to retain the heat your body generates, making it an even more effective barrier in extreme conditions.

@andrewhillis8973 Apologies, I thought you were asking about the Infinity Alpine Down Jacket. The Microlight won’t be nearly warm enough for temperatures as low as -20°C. While fill power is important, the total weight of insulation is a better indicator of warmth. At -20°C, even the Electron Jacket would struggle on its own. You’d need to layer up underneath or add a shell on top for extra protection. I’d recommend looking at the Rab Glaceon Pro Down Jacket-it offers more insulation and should keep you warmer in those extreme conditions.

If I was belaying in really cold weather, I’d probably go for the Fitzroy or the Citadel. However, if I wanted a jacket to do it all, (outer layer, mid layer, and a puffy for breaks) I’d probably go for the Oreus. @tauntonleisure23 күн бұрын
Hi, thanks for your question! This model is actually the successor to the Axion Pro, which was discontinued earlier this year (2024). Both jackets use the same high-quality fill power down and have a similar weight, so you shouldn't notice a major difference in warmth. The Glaceon Pro carries forward the Axion Pro’s warmth and performance, with only minor adjustments to design. Some retailers may still list the Glaceon Pro as the Axion Pro, which could cause confusion, but rest assured that this is the latest version. Let me know if you have any more questions!
