Yo thanks for speaking up about thescore. Ironically, I also uploaded a video today talking about this exact type of issue. They made a video about why people hate the smash player leffen and referenced one of my videos as an example of "leffen haters", yet somehow failed to represent any of the points I made, almost as if they just needed a snappy 6 second soundbite without actually listening to anything I was saying. I was completely stunned with how many thing they got wrong even though they supposedly saw my video. The Score has always kind of been a joke on the side of eSports. They do have good content for the low attention span folks who aren't going to read a full article or watch a full 30m video, but they definitely act a little entitled in their coverage overall. I think Dimitri is personable and he doesn't seem like a bad guy, but he is NOT a Counter-Strike aficionado by any means. They're a joke when it comes to real sports too. Their 24 hr TV network for tradition sports folded around 2014 because it was far away the 3rd best sports network in Canada. I work for the top one, TSN (Bell Media/ESPN) and in 2nd place, our rival, is Sportsnet (Rogers). So basically our two big telecom companies run our sports networks. theScore has never even been close to threatening the other two for market share. Eventually they got bought by Rogers and now all they do is this mediocre eSports journalism and sportsbook betting.

10:09 - I love you bringing this all up, Rich. Gotta tell a funny story 😁 My most viewed/liked tweet as your average nobody on Twitter was a post where I mentioned the case of rain: the only true GIGACHAD of CS has been playing with a left hand viewmodel throughout his entire career. The absence of this option didn't f'n stop him from picking up 3 consecutive trophies at the very start of CS2, did it? I'm sure he was not complaining much about it while recently making it to the 3 consecutive Grand Finals either! If this guy, who's been playing CS at the very top for a decade & has been a part of all big Grand Finals in CS2 so far, doesn't feel the impact of this change - NOBODY does. If they say they do - they're blatantly lying & blowing things completely out of proportions. No other multiplayer FPS allows the left hand viewmodel these days, but people still play those other games, don't they, it's not a problem over there for some reason? Cherry on top of this all was сunts replying to my statement with "imagine what rain could've done if he still had his cl_righthand 0!!". LMAO, like what rain would've done exactly? He'd win all those trophies once more on top of already winning them or take all MVPs from ropz at almost 30 years of age? All that by simply having a different viewmodel? 😂 And THESE people call Valve delusional, I simply can't.

Having played with left handed models for the past 24 years in CS, I would prefer to have left handed models because that is what I'm used to. That said, the issue is way overblown. I had absolutely no problem switching to right handed because as you said, damn near every game uses right handed models. The thing about copying pros is so true. New players getting into the game need to stop copying every single setting their favorite pro uses. 4:3 needs to be at the top of the list to die off.

Love your takes, love your analysis, Richard. You’re the only voice I’ve seen that actually tries to look at topics in esports objectively. You touch upon a very fascinating point between 15:30-17:00. Gabe had a talk before where he described, “we put the riot shield in. Our player numbers go up. We take the riot shield out. And our player numbers go… up.” He then describes how Valve had no model to describe what happened. Valve added the riot shield, and people played because maybe it was new content. But I also particularly remember how a little while after the main discourse was how broken the riot shield was. So, why did player numbers also go up when they removed it? There could’ve been a variety of reasons: maybe some old players who left had returned after it was removed; maybe some new players joined because while it wasn’t new content, it was a change to the game; maybe discourse changed to be more positive, attracting new players; it could’ve been a variety of reasons. But it helps show a very important fact: you can’t really predict how people will react and act. You can get pretty accurate, but you can’t exactly predict it. All this talk is bad… in the moment, but we have no idea how things while change and if people will be happy about it. All this negative discourse going right now? What it tells me is that the ones complaining have no hope. They “care” about the game, but they have no hope.

As a somewhat game developer in my free time I will say that it is literally impossible to stop all game exploiters, it can only be made more difficult, and for some reason people cannot grasp this concept. They go grouch the motions for EVERY GAME, whether it’s COD or CS they blame the developers for something mostly out of their control. Root level anti cheats like faceits can make it really hard but it is STILL possible to cheat. In the future I am hoping ai anti cheats will develop enough to be significant and stop the majority of cheaters, but for now this is the way it is.

I don't understand why he ranted about people who want to set cl_righthand to 0. In CS:GO, I had explicitly played with cl_righthand 1 for 7-8 years. However, at some point, I set up a bind to toggle it (due to visibility issues, such as on Overpass Connector). I noticed that spraying with the viewmodel on the other side became extremely difficult because I had become accustomed to the spray animation for years. Personally, I don't need cl_righthand 0 and I can understand why Valve wants to prevent people from toggling their viewmodel because it's not beginner-friendly. However, I feel bad for the people who have been playing with cl_righthand 0 for decades.

As someone who went to nursing school, played left-handed, and hopes that it eventually comes back in CS2, I can confirm that while it doesn't have a major impact on gameplay, your eyes do play a factor with the model. Even my class taught that most of us have dominant eyes. In CS, switching the model to whatever you desire can have a small impact on your game outside of clearing corners. It's easier to focus on the environment if you're right eye dominant while playing with the left handed model. Likewise, you can also match the model to your dominant eye which can help with keeping track of your gun resetting when one tapping. It's no dealbreaker by any means as I play with the default right handed model just fine, but it's not placebo either. There are just more important things to work on, such as improving optimization and the anti-cheat.

While the score is pathetic, making yet another video defending cs2/valve might be even worse. You keep forgetting to mention that they deleted csgo. cs2 is not a standalone release. The communities complains might be stupid at times but the core problem is valve deleting csgo for which I have yet to hear a plausible excuse.

I loved Csgo, and the esports scene of like 2015-17 is one of my faves of all time. But like it was due to the community. CSGO and CS in general is special and amazing due to the lack of updates. Its not League where theres patches every few weeks. CS and the community sure was super charged due to the new audience and operations in that era, but the game itself is very fricken good. And as richard said, leaving and rejoining is part of the amazing part of cs. And you pause the video to go on about how it's normal for people to burn out from games only for him to say that just after, along with like the third stressing of "this is all my opinion and subjective." Just don't get it why do people take them so seriously. It's clearly more of an entertainment channel with a spice of reporting. Mostly targeted towards casuals that show the first signs of interest in "esport media". Also they have a point with most of the complaints, but only for one singular reason. It being the fact that instead of releasing a new game they replaced the old one. The one thing that they actually should report(not sure if they did) is performance, especially on old hardware. I have friends that don't really game anymore other than occasional CS or dota2 on a 10 years old i5 and a gtx 750. For them going from 150+ fps to barely 60 with frequent stutters and even crash/freeze where restart is the only option is not ideal. To Valve's credit the overall performance of the game is way better since launch, but the game freezes are still happening. It's not as much of a niche issue as you would think since reddit and CS2 forum is filled with posts about it. Anyway, generally I agree with what you said, especially about crediting the source. It seems like the credit is there only to protect themselves from trouble and not to highlight or thank the people they are basically leeching off.

Good takes, but I can also sympathize that the game made the transition from go to 2 when it should have probably stayed in beta for a bit longer to add optimizations and the little things like left hand models. There are a few pros rn that are complaining about the performance: In go you could get like 500+ fps with a mid tier pc, now you can hardly get 300 with a high end one. High refresh rate monitors are impacted a lot while having less than their refresh rate in fps so that is the only complaint that I think is warranted, everything else is whatever

This most recent patch made the game feel way better, and I feel that if the game had released like this, we would be seeing only a fraction of the complaints we’ve seen. Yes, it’s a free to play game, but i don’t think it would be unreasonable to expect that it would release in at least as good of a state as GO was. It seems like it’s becoming more common for game developers to release broken or unfinished games and then slowly patch them into complete games. Cyberpunk, Fallout 76, and plenty others. I simply don’t understand why they couldn’t just make the game 128 tick instead of devising their new system which has had/will have unforeseen issues.

If you watch one of his recent videos RL said that the valve devs said the game is optimized for 64 tick and they wouldn't change it. As far as expecting cs2 to release at the same state of GO isnt really realistic. Its a new game engine thats going to have its own issues. They took away csgo to bring cs2 as to not split the community like 1.6 and source did.

the problem with the cheating argument is that it only works in high-ranked premiere. i can almost assure you that in high-ranked premiere (and i actually mean high-ranked, not people who are 15k thinking they're high-ranked), there is legitimately a cheater in at least 1/3rd of the games. the guy making this video, as far as im aware, is a relatively high-ranked player, and has probably experienced this himself. as for the people bitching on reddit/hltv/etc, they don't actually encounter cheaters. they encounter people who are better than them, but since all of their favourite streamers who are 25k+ in premiere accuse people of cheating every game, there is suddenly a cheater in every 12k lobby the average redditor plays in.

To be fair CSGO in 2012 was actually night-and-day different from CSGO even in 2013, never mind 2020 or later. It had none of the mechanics we think of today as just a given, like spray patterns, deagle as a precision and skill-based gun, smokes not putting out mollies, specific kill rewards for each weapon class, the weapon damage and cost balancing, even molotov damage and the slowing effect was different back then and they were way stronger than they are now. Despite this it took pros a long time to figure out just how strong they were, but when they caught on, they really started to abuse them. If a current CS pro who is relatively younger and did not play CSGO on release was made to play CSGO's release version or early beta versions from 2012 they would straight up not recognize the game.

To comment on the cheating stuff at the start - While I don't think it's every game, I think Goat's video on Tarkov (don't get me wrong, different game, can earn money in that via selling rubles etc) did open my eyes to cheating being more prevalent than I thought. I'd probably want to go 1 in every 5 games there is a cheater. I don't call people a cheater because a lot-of cheaters just are not that good, and unless you're blatantly cheating wallhacks wont help you headshot me if you're garbage at aiming. So while you might be suspect, if you're losing I will be far less likely to assume it. Spinbotters and the like, I have only seen a single one in a game so far and he was instantly voted off by his teammates which was funny. And on the Cl_Righthanded, while I don't think it's a huge issue, I totally get that it can be rough. I know when -I- tried lefthanded, I couldn't shoot for shit because just the way I process recoil and stuff had the gun on the right. It is -fine-, but I also get if someone has solely used CL_Righthanded 0 for years, it does take time to switch, because there are a few small benefits to switching your gun.

22:02, I gotta say on this point there is an argument for why free to play games would have more cheaters. If there isn't any monetary investment in an account, when one account gets banned its easier to just make another one because you haven't lost anything. If you have to invest your own money and then you get banned, you're less likely to pay more money for a new account. Kind of a weird statement from Richard that there's no argument when there is absolutely an argument that free to play games are more likely to have cheaters. Not that it applies to CS considering most serious players buy prime anyway, but a weird statement nonetheless.

But at 10:18 doesn't this argument fall apart when they literally take away the previous product which has those things? Valve have not made a sequel to CSGO, they've completely replaced it. If they just left CSGO and added CS2 as a new game then there wouldn't even be room to complain, I feel like the only reason they didn't do that is because it forces people to play their new version, which is comparatively shite. In regards to community servers and stuff, it was pretty egregious to just take them away. Sure, they're not OBLIGATED to do anything, but that doesn't make the complains illegitimate.

When I was playing CS2 I hovered around 19000 ELO and let me tell you, 1/3 of the times I queued premier, there was always a closet cheater-easily discernible from the sus play and the fact that they almost always have a lvl 2 steam profile with like 500 hours on cs2 and its one of their only games... I've played 2 years in ECL/ FPL now so I know what playing with/against actual good players is like, but once you get past 22k-23k rating it is more often then not you get a cheater. 7 of my last 10 games has had someone blatant smoke spam wallbang noscope headshot running around and it obviously makes the game unplayable. I have very low standards for Valve made anticheats so I don't normally say anything, but higher rated premier games are not worth the time in the slightest because of the cheaters. If Valve wants to keep players playing on their new premier mode the need to fix the anti cheat because there is essentially a cheater-induced elo ceiling and there's nothing legit players can do about it.
