The Squale history is genuine, my uncle dived in them in the Caribbean in the 70's , swore by them, fantastic timepieces. The Von Buren did own the brand, there's no 'allegedly' about it 🙂

The main reason guys buy watches is for the way they LOOK. And this watch is very cool looking, with some 1960s flair. There's nothing else like it out there, and the comparison to the Glycine is off-target. Pick another blue watch to compare it to, perhaps the Seiko SBDC053. That would be valid, although this Squale is more appealing and interesting, especially if you're into vintage divers. That orange hand on a blue dial is stunning. The matte version of this watch is even cooler. Again, it's about the way it LOOKS, not whether the crown is a little tricky to operate or the bezel has a little play. This watch is a looker!
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
I think you’re making a big assumption that might not be correct. I’ve talked to thousands of watch enthusiasts and a lot care about things like how the crown operates just as much as the aesthetics.

Thanks for taking a look at this watch. I do agree with you on having writing on the side of the case, don't like it on the Blancpain either. I never understood the strong negative views about Squale that prevail on-line. Perhaps the case is made in China, so what. Omega and other Swiss manufacturers have parts made in China. It uses an ETA movement, which is better than the Selitta movements used in Oris and everyone seems to love Oris. To your point about the dial not having surrounds on the markers. I think this is to keep a vintage look. Likewise, I think the marks on the strap buckle are made to make it look used and "vintage". Also, the orange hand was common on dive watches of the 60's/70's, i.e. DOXA Searambler. This is not a bad vintage inspired diver.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
That's a good point, it is definitely vintage inspired and those design elements reflect that. Overall I did like the watch, albeit I didn't love the price.
@bucknaked66745 жыл бұрын
I have doubts the cases are done in China given this is the company's speciality. They would still have all of the old milling machines and workshop equipment to do it in Switzerland and let's face it, they don't exactly turn over crazy numbers of watches each year. Also, when you read up on the legislation governing the use of 'Swiss made', outside of the watch face they can only stamp it on parts of the watch that actually are fully Swiss made. Hence to have it on a case back means that case back was produced in Switzerland. I had a Tissot seastar 1000 that wasn't stamped Swiss made on case back and I was horrified when I opened it to regulate the watch only to find made in China ink stamped on the underside. Of course I quickly applied scotch Brite to rectify the situation!

I’ve had the same model of 1521 for a couple of years now and I’ve found that is really is the ultimate vacation watch. It’s shiny, flashy and very azzurro. On a orange NATO it is very...Mediterranean, the wobbly bezel and 98% designed aspects making it even more Italian. I love mine for the very reasons you dislike it, I find that quite hilarious.

I’ve got the 1521 PVD in triple black. I’ve got a Seamster and Speedmaster and my 1521 knocks the socks off them. My go to watch everyday, the best value watch you can get for £800-£900 in my view.

I got one of these, due to that color. It was striking. But that crown, bugged me every time I used it. It sits low and I have big fingers. And trying to get my finger and thumb in there to turn it proved difficult. After you first mentioned Seiko in stead of squale by accident, I could not look at this watch without thinking "This looks like a skx007 mod!" Even the black strap looks skx007! Great review, feels like reviewing it from a neutral ground! Brilliant!

Haha the most controversial watch on KZbin, well done. I find squale an ok watch with a too high price. What I dislike is the all polished case, it seems like a missed opportunity with all those angles ad bevels. They could have made alterations with brushed finish to make things more interesting. This way they give an impression of being too lazy to bother. Oh and the side logo is just ridiculous, like Invicta is trying to tell the owner they bought out Sauale
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy, obviously I'm with you on the logo on the case. It's like an artist making a nice painting, then putting their name in huge bold letters right in the middle.

I think they have a bead blasted case too, which I prefer. I think the overall design is pretty good and practical. But yea, the price is a bit too high. I think Squale is much more interesting than Hamilton diver, but for almost twice the price it seems overpriced. Intrestingly tho most of the independent companies who use automatic ETA movements sell their watches for around 1000 eur/us. Also whats up with the comic sans font in their website LOL? I think this is a fair minded and balanced review. My issue with both arguments elsewhere is the basis of the argument. The people who love or hate it tend to just boil down to personal taste. I haven't read too many solid arguments for or against the watch from a mechanical or performance basis. My own 2 cents... I hate the three separate "Squale" logos. Saying the brand twice on the dial is ridiculous and the one on the side is tacky. I do however like the blue colour as a summer/beach watch and I quite like the bright accented colour of the minute hand. I agree that the Glycine Combat Sub seems to be way better value, being a bit thinner, comparative in performance and available for half the price or less.

Nice and sober review. I like this watch, but think it works better in the matt blasted finish. In that finish it brings something to the the table that very few others do. A completely unpolished understated diving tool watch. In that setting the crown works better too. It appears to be very well protected, and that’s more important to me and my use case than accessibility and ease of operation. I will certainly try this watch out at some point, but as you point out, probably not at full retail price.

Interesting review of a very polarizing watch. The impressive thing is the amount of haters and fanboys of certain watch youtube "gurus", people expect them to be totally fair in their impressions, and that's impossible because the reviews are based in their own opinions and their experiences, which may vary from one guy to another!.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
A review, or more accurately described as a critique is as you say, the opinions of the presenter. It's funny that I get complaints from people because "all I do is give my opinions". What else does a reviewer do haha? If someone doesn't like my point of view, which is typically very consistent, I'd probably suggest finding someone else to watch.

Excellent review as always! To wind it, just go/swipe over the lug at 5 o’clock and the crown with your thumb, it should work perfectly 😉 I know it’s a little bit unusual but the hole design is it. Squale was (I don’t know if they are still) one of the most important case producer in Europe. They built cases for many luxuries Swiss brands and also as I know for the legendary Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. You mentioned the Glycine Combat Sub - was/is also a great watch. I don’t know if the are still so great and produce the watches in Switzerland or maybe in China now, since Glycine is part of the Invicta Group. From the point of pricing, I’m 100% with you. Since they are Invicta, you can buy a Combat Sub under 400,- what a great value!!!

I have a Squale 1521 and think it's great, easily worth the $900. If you don't like the design then that's fine, but I think most of the controversy for this watch is due not to the watch itself but to a certain English gentleman who shall not be named. Which is a shame; a lot of people will dismiss this watch simply because they can't stand him, and they're missing out on a fantastic watch.

In my very humble opinion, I do like the blue on the face and bezel and the chrome inside ring, but that’s it for the price of $899. I think this watch brand has gained popularity due to a particular watch reviewer from a large East Coast City. I do like the fact that they embossed the side with their name, probably so you can fill it in with a bright color paint to let the world know you are a member of the Club. But again another comprehensive review.👌

You say you don't like the orange minute hand. Fair enough. But is it not that colour to help ease of visibility when using the bezel when diving?. I think it looks fine and makes perfect sense.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
Sure I know why the color orange is used on dive watches. The same reason hunters wear an orange vest, for visibility. That said I don't dive, nor do the overwhelming majority of the people that wear dive watches. From a pure aesthetics standpoint, I'm not a fan of the color orange.

As always a great and objective review Guy, thanks! Totally agree, except I think your example had some issues (and the stock black rubber is boring as). I have bought, sold and rebought the 1521 twice. I now have the ocean blasted blue version and love it (a long with all my other divers, rolex sub, seikos etc). I have to say the one you had seemed a little ... average. The crowns on mine all stuck/stick out much further when unscrewed. And none of my bezels had anywhere near that much back play. I mean they weren't submariner or pelagos level by any means, but it does stop firmly (and I think you can adjust the tension via the screws on the bezel). I'm not an orange fan either, but as a vintage diver it makes total sense as orange is most visible when diving, so Ive grown to love it (also against the blue). That strap buckle on your example (as noted by others) is very odd, i have numerous genuine squale straps for mine including rubbers, leather, the mesh and natos and they are all top notch finishing and quality wise, and always have a signed buckle. Their rubbers are actually made by bonetto cinturini, and the leathers are collareb, so are not bad at all. ETA is ok for me to (even Rolex wasnt always in house ;-) ... easy and cheap to service, and my current example runs at +2, -2! As for their history ... I got all bummed out by the hearsay, hate and snobbery initially when I bought this, but having delved into it, their history is actually quite legit!, and probabaly more significant for diving than luxury watches. I''m from a family of divers and I recently found out my father (who was a proper jacques cousteau type living in Papua new Guinea) had squale cased and squale watches back in the day along with his higher end Rolex's and Seikos. Although Squale was bought by the Maggi family, they were always involved in some way so not much different, and who cares who owns who in 2018!. I do wish they had stuck to the 1521 and the 60 atmos lines which are their own original designs, as some of the others are homage junk blah to me, but you gotta do what you have to survive in the watch industry. Agreed the RRP is up there (but who pays RRP except anything on Rolex anyway?) , but for good fit and finish, unique style, some sort of history, sapphire and 500m! there isn't to much else like it. I only paid $600 on my last grey market re-buy new off of Ebay (driect from italy) which is pretty great IMHO. And, Ive never lost more than $100 when I sold the others (seemed good for resale to me). End of the day, It's a professional dive tool, not a luxury watch, which is what they have always done. Not for everyone and by no means perfect ... and yes overhyped by some ... but if you look at it for what it's supposed to be, it's a great little package. I wouldn't pick it as my only watch, but it definitely sits nicely in a small collection. Of all my watches, the 1521 probably gets the most interest/compliments too suprisingly. IMHO these get way to much hate from the snobs, and haters (and as for talk of shills etc ... sheesh get over it people). If you like the look, and even better if you actually occasionally set foot in water!, get it at a good price and enjoy it I say! Just took mine to Thailand for my 40th and had a blast partying and snorkeling with the family! You should check out the blasted version on a mesh! or the official NATO. Look forward to more awesome and honest reviews!

IMO a beautifull and well built watch - at least not a blatant Submariner copy as many others in this price range. Those printed markers take inspiration from the golden age of dive watches - 60s and 70s, and the orange minute hand makes much sense considering this a purpose built dive wach and visibility under water is a must here. I think Squale watches areone of the best in the affordable segment, really no comparison possible with Invicta.

The Collins English/ French dictionary says Squale pronounced 'Skwal' is a noun for 'Shark.' I liked the engraving on the case. The brand Uylsee Nardin have the serial number bolted there and are a quirky brand based in their History producing Marine Chronometers for ship's navigation to calculate your Longitude. ETA are supposed to be good movements and the crown is positioned so it isn't damaged. According to the diver Jason Heston at Hodinkee. The concertina section of the strap is for diving watches to take up the slack as your neoprene diving suit compresses as you go deeper and it is rated at 500m. I only know a bit about the more mainstream expensive brands and nothing about these or Seiko. It looked legible and had hands like Doxa diving watches which Jason Heaton and the other diver James Stacey like. You could get a Doxa or even better a Ulysse Nardin to review from your friends at this shop.

Nice, honest review. I recently got the Squale Onda Limited edition and I think they got rid of most of the problems you outlined on this watch. The bevel has almost no play in it and moves easier than my Seamaster's. There are applied markers on the dial. The bevel has raised numbers on it which gives it some topography. There is no engraving on the side of the watch and they eliminated all logos except for 'Squale' on the dial. Same ETA movement and the same price. I think you get a better watch for the money with one of the limited Onda versions rather than just a Squale 1521.

Thanks for this review. I think that you focused a bit too much on negative aspects of this watch and did not bring out enough the positive things. For example the crown. Yes, it is a bit hard to use but on the other hand it is well protected and without crown guards. That is actually quite well designed. And about the buckle: I think that was not the orginal buckle because there was no Squale sign. I have had several Squale straps and they all have had signed buckle.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
There are positive aspects, of which I’ve mentioned some, and there’s plenty of channels out there that will tell you nothing but the positives. Regarding the buckle I’ve seen many examples that have this older low quality version and many newer ones with the signed buckle. I don’t know when Squale started changing them but it is original to the watch.
@sakurikala31406 жыл бұрын
Yes, you mentioned some positive things but some obvious ones you did not. I don't expect that honest rewies like this one are just about the positives things but here I think the balance between positive and negative aspects was not ok. And about the buckle. If you Google "Squale strap" you see that almost everyone has signed buckle. I haven't seen this kind of buckle before. And this is a thing that you could have mentioned on your review.

Hey, Guy, good objective review of the 50 Atmos. This watch gets a lot of play by you know who which cracks me up because he always complains about other watches with the exact same dimensions being too big for his wrist. Lol. Huh? Anyway, outside of that channel your review and James Stacey's review are the only ones I've heard that weren't negative. Did you try contacting Squale about the grade of the movement and AR coating, etc? I've done that with other small watch brads to learn more about their product and they usually respond to me. Halios, for example, wrote me a nice email back answering several questions I had about the Seaforth. Oh, regarding the rubber strap. Those folds are to allow the strap to expand and contract while diving. It's fairly standard on a rubber dive strap. Nice video. Keep the content coming.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
I didn't contact Squale to ask about those specific things. I'm sure they would fill in those blanks for me if I did, but it would be nice if they just published the specs clearly so that wasn't necessary.
@Redbirdsfan19706 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you but so many of them don't include this information. I don't review watches like you so when I've contacted manufacturers it's to find out more about the watch to determine if I want to consider purchasing it. That might be a good route for you to go in the future to obtain information on smaller brands that don't publish all the details.

The glycine dosnt look like the squale at all in my mind. The Squale is so because of the unique case, it has this raw machined look, like a tool, especially in the bead blasted version, i like the depth it has and the squale engraving gives is this machined look, the glycine looks like any other diving watch.

I wonder if you got ahold of a bad one. Mine has very good bezel movement. Mine came with a soft rubber strap with a very nice buckle- nothing like the one you showed. I put mine of the optional shark mesh bracelet. I don't wear it often, but I like it. I agree with your criticisms of the crown position- a real pain. BTW, I bought mine about 11/2017. Keep up the good videos!
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I looked around online as others had mentioned they had versions with a different buckle on their strap. I've seen examples both like this one I had and a different nicer buckle. Perhaps they changed them at some point and this was an older piece of inventory from the dealer.
@oren14196 жыл бұрын
It's a great watch I have owned the PVD version. The buckle on your watch is different than what I had on my 1521, mine had a very nice Squale buckle, I really think that the buckle on your watch isn't original it doesn't looks close to the one I had. BTW, you can get them for less than 900$ brand new on ebay.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
Someone else said their buckle is different. I looked around online, and see pictures of watches with the buckle I had on this model and a different and nicer signed buckle. I imagine that they must have changed to a different buckle at some point and this might be an older model that was in the dealers inventory for a while.
@oren14196 жыл бұрын
IDK how old it must be to have this buckle, mine was 2016. BTW I think that the newer models don't have the Squale branding on the case though.

I was considering buying this watch a few months ago. While I do like the design, there are few flaws that you pointed out that make it feel not worth its price tag. And considering what you can buy for $1000, I decided not to purchase

What's with the screws on the bezel? Won't name names, but a certain popular KZbinr really seems biased in their presentation of this watch. I much preferred your approach. The finishing on the clasp, bezel shake and crown wobble is shocking, and tbh I don't like the design In general, except for the colour of the blue and the sunburst.
@DeusNyx6 жыл бұрын
SevenW25 V Totally under stand who you mean. I bought the squale about 4 years ago just for that reason/review. That's when I leaned the crown was neigh impossible to grip, and wobbles badly when unwound, the bezel was almost un-greased, and had back play, and the silly Invicta, sorry, squale stamped logo on the side of the case. That's when I learned to watch multiple reviews first than trust the popular one....bit like micro brands that way...
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
I don't know why the bezel has screws on the side actually. Sorry I couldn't answer your question on that.
@RoelfvanderMerwe6 жыл бұрын
The bezel screws tightens and loosens the bezel. So if you like it to be more difficult to turn the you tighten them. If you loosen them all the way the bezel will come off
@wiwe47416 жыл бұрын

Squale is supposed to mean shark. French pronunciation is sqal, but it doesn't mean shark. In Italian, shark is squalo. Go figure))) I usually buy my watches for a purpose. On the other hand, I bought the 50 Atmos because I find it to be a beautiful time piece. I agree with you on the drawbacks and the price. However, I just really like this watch. I have always wanted a Glycine. Yet now that Invicta owns them I have my reservations. Just the pricing scheme is enough to make me think more than twice.

Thank you for the nice review. How does this one, in your opinion, compare to the glycine combat sub you reviewed in the past? Strictly regarding the quality, the level of finish etc. I have my thoughts regarding other parameters, only interested in your directly comparing the quality of these two specific models you reviewed. Thank you.
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
I would say they are pretty close and that's why if I were in the market to buy something like this I would probably go for the combat sub, since you can find them for about half the cost.
@brokenspear66046 жыл бұрын
I bought this back when TGV was really pushing them, and it left me pretty underwhelmed. It was a beautiful watch, but for the price I think they slacked a bit on the quality. I got mine the the mesh bracelet and there was this metal bur on the endlink that prevented it from fitting the watch, so I had to file that down. The bezel alignment was off, which isn't a hard fix but again for that price point shouldn't have left like that. I've had much better luck with different watches since and I don't really miss this one at all. Great video, I look forward to the next one
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
I've heard a similar story a few times now, having picked this watch up based on some hype and ultimately being disappointed. I don't think it's a bad watch, but it's not for me, at that price.

The movement and build quality is all that matters really.Whether you like the look of it or not blah blah blah is personal preference.ETA running within 3 -4 sec's(pretty good) ? I noticed there is adjustable screws on the bezel.I'm guessing this would take the little bit of play out of that action.Shitter rubber band but put it on a shark mesh and it will transform.I'd say a pretty good watch. I might have to get one.

Great video as always 👍🏽 I have a speedy pro and a Marinemaster both of which I love but I want a blue dial watch and I’m stuck between a Seiko Sbdc053 (£495) or the Pelagos (£2700)- this sits in the middle price wise... I’ll be honest I like the look and the colours of the Squale but not sure I prefer it to the others. How do you think this compares to the Pelagos and Sbdc053?
@JustBlueFish6 жыл бұрын
I would just be making guesses, since I haven't spent any real time with either of those watches. The Seiko SBDC divers are one of the few Seiko dive watches I've wanted to review but haven't had the chance yet. I would guess the Pelagos is a much nicer watch then this Squale, but that's just based on seeing them at the watch shop briefly and the reputation of Tudor.
@grahamlawton62506 жыл бұрын
The blue bezel and dial are amazing. Gorgeous. ETA? Excellent. Cool design but not for me. The crown, bezel action, engraving on the side and overall size just don’t do it for me. PLUS its very shiny for a true diver which this really is. Mixing brushed and polished might have worked better. Great review and that you look at all the details (I.e. buckle). Cheers.

biggest issue with squale (simular to steinhart) is their homage-watches. See here for example: forums.watchuseek.com/f74/sub-homage-comparison-steinhart-squale-773862.html This watch is so beautiful, but just because it's squale im reprehensive to buy it (would never touch a steinhart).
