Today I am finally putting together my Rolex Submariner homage comparison video! I've been wanting to do this video for a long time, and with a lot of help I was able to get together a collection of some of the more popular Rolex Submariner homage watches for this video. We are looking at watches from Invicta, Tisell, Steinhart, Squale, Davosa and Ginault!

Why do people hate homage watches so much
@kencur9690
@kencur9690 3 жыл бұрын
@@emptybucket1988 I don’t think he hated on the homage per se, but rather on the idea of spending quite a bit of money on one. And to be honest, I can see the validity of that argument, given that at that price point you’re entering territory were original individual pieces from historic brands are available. Of course, if you’re hell bent on getting an homage, then perhaps this may not affect your decision.

George Grasser , it’s probably the best homage offering . The 42mm versions are awesome . ETA movement plus all the other offerings . Steinhart is a great watch for the price. Solid movement, very substantial feeling, 42mm offers great wrist presence, I like the strap and the clasp, I think, is solid feeling. Cyclops is the only downer, but not a deal-breaker for me. Quality of finish on my Kermit is great. Really like it and would recommend with confidence. Also Steinhart customer service is excellent. Invicta also good value at the low end. If only they’d get rid of that godawful engraving. Don’t like dial design on the Squale. Never seen a Tissel, Davosa or Ginault up close. Like the look of the Davosa, although a bit big height wise.

I have my invicta for close to 15 years. Yup, that’s right. I have done nothing, and I mean nothing to this watch but wash it with a toothbrush and regular soap once a month. Keeps good time, it’s water PROOF, yes ocean swimming as well and although I work in heavy duty manufacturing I still looking for scratches in the crystal. Nicks and pits in the case and band? Just a few. Oh, one time I jumped into a water hole from 25 ft and the clasp came undone. OMG. Big deal, right? Mine was $60 I saved the $ 9,940 in a watch that I can ACTUALLY wear every day for my daughter’s college

I have owned my pro diver for almost a year now and it shows no signs of wear other than minor scratches from daily use. I do however take extremely good care of my watches so maybe this is why mine is in such good working shape. I have tracked the time day to day and it is fairly accurate with about +8 seconds a day. I think what someone should take away here is that it really doesn't matter which watch you get as long as you take care of it. Great video and great comparison!

Hey Jody. Really looking forward to that. Be good if you could try and introduce some sort of ‘value criteria’ into yours. Comparing watches at various price points is interesting but of limited usefulness for those on a budget (aren’t we all?). For example is a Ginault really worth 5 or 6 Tisells? I know it’s a tall order and a lot would be personal (Question. What is value?) but would, imho, give your video a really unique, useful and practical edge. Waiting with nervous anticipation.

my thought on the Steinhart cyclops magnification, it actually makes the date window (after magnification) when looking at the dial more symmetrical, it is about the same size as the hour markers. To me that symmetry made it more aesthetic and I didn't need the higher magnification to read it. Maybe that was Steinhart's thought when they used a lower magnification cyclops too

Really good attempt to determine the best homage. It’s easy to take a variety of watches at different price points and compare them however it’s another thing to attempt some sort of value judgement. For example take the bracelet off the Tisell and put on a decent nato and most of your comments disappear and you’ve got yourself a real bargain - ceramic, sapphire and miyota at an excellent price. Similarly, an important aspect to some is the customer support and service facilities offered. From my experience Tisell and Steinhart offer superb after sales support whereas with some of their competitors you’re struggling to find an office address or phone number, never mind a willingness to resolve issues. Anyway as I said a great effort, really thought provoking.

I agree with your review (the best of this range)! Just one note, the Davosa 43mm 500m is about 1200 not 860. The 40mm is correct at 769. I am new to these. I no longer feel it is worth it for a short lived smart watch (Fitbit does not even have a service department, non serviceable). But I purchased an 8926OB with the NH35A on Ebay. The watch will not manually wind or hack. It is back at the Invicta service center. I think they used an older NH25, which does not have these functions, used with an NH35A rotor! Made in Maylasia means that Seiko is out of control with their QC, so we all should take what you have said under advisement, we are getting fake news otherwise about this NH35A! I will next shoot for the Davosa 40mm, fits my 7 inch wrist. Thank you again.

I own a Tisell Marine Diver since January 2019 and I am very pleased with it. The Miyota 9015 movement beats at 28,800A/h has 24 jewels and keeps excellent time, typically gaining in the long term no more than 5s/d, whereas its variation is pretty tight. The watch wears very well on the wrist and its weight feels just about perfect at 140grams (much like the Submariner itself). The glidelock mechanism works perfectly in my sample and for 230$ this watch presents by far the best value for money proposition for a Rolex Submariner homage. I would therefore wholeheartedly recommend this diver watch.

I recently picked up a Tisell Marine Diver and have been very impressed over the first couple weeks with it. It is currently running at about -3sec/day, which I am quite happy with. The glidelock on mine also has none of the issues shown here. It locks up and releases easily, but hard enough that it will not come apart without decent effort. The sweep of the hand is very smooth on the Miyota 9015 movement. At $230, I don't think there are many other watches out there that can touch it.

The Squale and the Davosa share a lot of similar features like the dodecagonal caseback, the endlinks, the clasp, the diver's extension, case shape and even to some extent the rough top brushing on the case. Sure the Davosa is bigger but it's very apparent that they are both identical in the way they are manufactured. I'm wondering if they both have the same suppliers or maybe one supplies the other. A more in depth video about that would be really interesting.

Many thanks to you for putting together this comparison video of the various Sub homage divers. Personally, I do like the Squale but the lack of refinement on the brushing of the lugs really turned me off! The Ginault is also my favourite if not for the price. My threshold on this watch is $1000. The Steinhart is also nice for the money except that the lugs do not curve down to hug the wrist! Happy holidays everyone!

So if I‘ve understood correctly, the point is being made that the Steinhart case isn’t even an attempt at a Sub copy? Steinhart has actually been doing it’s own thing, all this time? This is outrageous originality regarding which they deserve to be taken to task!
@JustBlueFish

I'm not sure it's originality. I've had people comment that the Steinhart case is a copy of another model watch, but I'm not familiar enough with that to confirm.

Great review as always Guy! Thanks for putting it together. I own the Steinhart OVM39 and love it. You’re spot on about the case shape, but that’s a minor issue. The bracelet is better than the claps to be sure, but given its military aesthetic, my OVM spends all its time on NATO straps anyways. Have had both the Steinhart Ocean One 39 Green (the Kermit) and the Tissel green dial (Hulk) in the cart online, but never pulled the trigger. Held out for the Ginault model identical to yours. And I am impatiently awaiting its arrival in the mail as we speak. USPS says to expect delivery this coming Monday. So I got that going for me. 😁

Great job on this video. It is YOU and one other watch lover that got me beyond excited about the Ginault Ocean Rover with date. Well I pulled the pin and dropped the $1200 for the Ginault. Wow!! I am in love with the watch! Nicest watch I have ever purchased and worn and worth every penny! I find myself constantly looking at it and admiring it. I am one of those guys that ALWAYS has my watch on, I sleep with it on, I shower with it on, I do everything with my watch on and feel naked if I don’t have it and this Ginault simply feels awesome! The glide lock bracelet is genius! On a serious note I kinda feel this bracelet should really become the standard now on all men’s watches. It’s simply amazing. Not only is it fun to look at but it is so damn functional. Thank you my friend for making these very cool videos as I very much enjoy watching them.

Awesome review and comprehensive comparison. I would like just to point out that the lowest end can go down to 22-25 dollars. Tevise (Chinese company with Chinese caliber) makes a brutal homage that has been becoming pretty popular as a beater. 30 meter "diver" (lol). With 65 to 90 dollars you can get a Loreo 200 meters Seagull movement and finally with 150 dollars you can find a Ticino sea viper (powered by Miyota 8215) 200 meters. All Chinese production that has become pretty popular because of low price and relatively "reliability". Thank you for this video, I believe it was needed. Keep it up Sir!!

Great job and happy to lend you the Steinhart. My wife is happy her watch is headed back also. Funny enough the Steinhart IMHO is like a mashup between the 5 digit and current version Submariner. Also my five digit sub has the style of clasp you seem not to prefer. So just a warning if you go after a five digit sub the bracelets and clasps are nowhere near the modern claps and bracelets. Myself I like my 2008 Submariner as I do not prefer the super case (except on the pepsi GMT). This was the BEST Sub homage comparison hands down all without any bias to boot! Great job

Guy, did you had issues also with the 4R35/36 ? Because I can resonate with you about some 7S movements and also a NH35, but I have a bunch of 4R35/36 powered Seikos and I am impressed, they are rock solid and very accurate, pretty stable, reliable so far (oldest one is from 2011, also have one from 2014) and all of them around or under 6 secs per day, and I see no change in the accuracy even on the oldest ones.
@JustBlueFish
@JustBlueFish 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t recall specifically, I’ve seen fewer watches with the 4R movements, but the 4R has the same guts as the 7S so I would feel safe in assuming the same issues would exist. I am sure I did see these issues in the 6R movement and plenty of 7S movements. It’s not consistently in every watch but it comes up often enough for me to not trust it.

I have just had my 1984 Rolex 5513 Submariner serviced by Rolex for Euros 1000 and took 5 weeks. In the meantime I bought a Steinhart Ocean Blue. After having the Steinhart for about 3 months I have to admit the Steinhart is a better watch. It keeps better time and looks better. I have no idea how good the new Rolex Submariner is but now I wouldn't buy one. The Steinhart can be serviced anywhere for a fraction of the price or you could just by another one. You can buy a dozen Steinhart Ocean Blue watches for the price of a Rolex.

JustBlueFish Watch Reviews Sellita is a well known respected Swiss brand which produce(d) movements on behalf of ETA. Because of this, I essentially consider Sellita movements as ETA movements. The Ginault’s clone movement has no pedigree and made by who knows? In this respect, I would have preferred the Ginault to have had a regulated Sellita movement any day of the week.

It's an interesting question - where does the G7275 movement 'sit', quality wise, relative to the ETA 2824-2 and the Sellita Sw200, which one should consider of being equally good, and also how does it compare to the Chinese eta clones (peacock SL2000 and sea-gull ST2130) which seem to have quality control issues out of the factory (brass shavings/skin/fibres in the movement)?

I bought my Tissell Marine Diver in October of 2020 and its performance, fit and finish were flawless. It may have been the beneficiary of some of the better intentioned of these reviews. I also have three Invicta Pro Divers and the Crown came out of the first one several years ago. But samples two and three have been flawless. There is no such thing as a 100% zero-flaw QC co-efficient. (Just ask the average Rolex owner!) The Invicta, IMO at least, takes the "bang for the buck" homage honors, but the TISSELL gets you closer to a Rolex Sub (the lume, the bracelet, the sapphire crystal and the 9015 is actually MORE accurate than some Rolex Subs I've worn) per dollar spent. The Ginault starts getting into "real money", so I don't let myself get quite that far out over my watch collecting skis. But that's just me...

I have to agree with the NH35 movement. I got the Invicta Pro Diver 89280B, and had to request for a replacement from Amazon. The first one ran 5 minutes late overnight the first night 😳 and settled at losing roughly 1 minute/hour for the next two days. But the replacement is running at a very good 3.2 seconds per day, though it's only my second day. Quite happy with the replacement, especially my wife, she wants it, and what she wants she gets... I wish the Parnis Submariner homage was included. For less than $150 you get a sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, not sure what the movement is though. I'm guessing it would rank at par with the Tissell but for a $100 less... I think I'll get the Parnis GMT II homage with the Pepsi dial and Jubilee bracelet for Christmas since the Pro Diver 89260B is back at around $80. Though it's still too expensive for purchase, I might've considered saving up for the Ginault if the hour hand looked like the minute hand or had the Mercedes hands. I just don't like the fat sword hand esthetic, especially for a diver. Anyway, awesome review. Totally enjoyed it. If I can give you two thumbs up, I would... Cheers!

As best I can tell, none of the listed watches are trying to produce an exact duplicate of the Rolex watch and in fact, IMO, Steinhart as an example produces homage watches to compare to Rolexe watches of the past. I happen to own three Steinhart watches (great value), Omega (actual vintage) Man on the Moon non-auto and a Rolex Thunderbird stainless and gold. The Thunderbird case most resembles my Steinhart watches. IMO, if one purchases Steinhart, then, you will be very satisfied with your purchase. The kicker is: even if you have Rolex money, it seems dealers do not have or do not want to sell unless specific criteria are met; also, wearing your wallet on your wrist has always been a huge risk.
