Love that you broke this out (and continue to do so). Aja - the album I ALWAYS use to demo/test my equipment. Katy Lied - my second favorite Dan record (the debut is my favorite).

I don't know much about Steely Dan and the UHQR but find this really interesting. Very educational learning about technical aspects about those expensive re-issues from audiophiles.

Excellent review Bill. I was surprised to hear that Logic and Aja were not as good as the first two. IMHO. I truly believe that casual or newer Dan fans would be able to notice and enjoy the sound clarity of the record. But longtime fans like yourself would be able to hear more. The separated instruments, the punch, the highs and lows, etc... My only beef with spending $150 on any album that I already have is how many times that I am going to listen to it. Will I listen to Steely Dan more now because of the upgrade? Or will it get spun once or twice in the next couple of years? Kind of like some of my favorite classic rock bands. I hardly listen to them at all anymore because I have heard them thousands of times. I am always looking for something new or I am listening to more jazz. Well done B~ Rob/Boston

Rob - Pretzel Logic is the only release that is not stunning. Aja is far and above any previous release as far as sonic quality. I don't know how you thought I said it was not. Good to see you.

I think Steely Dan sounds best on any available pressing. Put it on and it's still going to be Steely Dan. Just put the record on and enjoy. however, to answer the question posed, my pressing of Aja the label says AA, but the dead wax says AA with a B scratched out. Same metal work as the true AB copies, yet it is a transitional copy towards the actual AA issues.

How does it compare to the SACD/Hi Res version and how much better is it than the original 1977 pressing?

Haven't heard the SACD. UHQR has more detail, seperation of instruments....everything I said in the video.

@@BillsBoxOfSound Thanks for your reply. My original 1977 pressing sounds pretty good so I can't see why I would want to pay over £200 for this UHQR pressing despite its improved sound quality when I could get an excellent sounding sacd version costing no more than £40 for it.
