It's worth remembering that the SNES's biggest rival, the Genesis (Megadrive), came out well over a year before the SNES, during a time of great technical innovation, and it still held it's own against Nintendo's juggernaut.
@inceptional5 ай бұрын
In some ways, I think that's even more apt for the PC Engine, which really was the first system to make that jump. It even did CD console gaming first too. Both SNES and Genesis were really just next obvious steps from the PC Engine in most ways. The Genesis certainly so, at it simply increased most of the same specs a bit and went with that (more sprites, more backgrounds, one more button, etc. But less colours). SNES introduced some very novel things like proper transparency, Mode 7, and its truly defining controller, but was ultimately just following the lead of the other two systems too when all is said and done (more sprites, more backgrounds, etc). So, yeah, even as a SNES fan first, I think I'd like to give PC Engine the credit it's due there for truly starting the best generation in console gaming imo.

@@FatNorthernBigot Yeah, it certainly held its own technically in many ways. And it ultimately competed pretty much on a level playing field in America and ended up selling in very similar numbers, both in part because of solid hardware and also Sega's hardcore marketing too. It was a similar story in Europe and "other" territories also. Although, obviously, in Japan the SNES really stood on its own there. And I still think the PC Engine deserves a nod there too, as it came out long before the SNES and about a year before Genesis, and yet managed to output more colours on-screen than both, is capable of superior DMA than both [from what I'm told], and even has a faster CPU than that SNES and on par with the Genesis. That's dang impressive for an "8-bit" console. It certainly blew away the likes of the NES and Master System by a long ways when it launched. And it's remarkable how well it stands toe to toe with those two other giants at times. It even outsold the Genesis in Japan, although was a bit of flop elsewhere. The Neo Geo deserves a mention too, but that was a whole other beast. Still, I give it acknowledgement. :) I'd say in terms of system capabilities it would go like this: Neo Geo > SNES Genesis > PC Engine. In terms of libraries, based on quality plus number of games, it would go like this: SNES ≈> Genesis > PC Engine And in terms of hardware sales it would go like this: SNES > Genesis > PC Engine > Neo Geo. I guess that's likely why the SNES is ultimately regarded as the best system overall and even of all time by so many people. It was a very competitive generation to be sure, with a group of 2D consoles that have really help up.

Your points are pretty much identical to mine for the SNES. It represented sort of the pinnacle of the 2D era of home consoles before the next generation would make the dramatic shift into 3D space. The graphical fidelity possible on the system was a pretty big leap from the 8-bit consoles before it and the sound and music were also greatly improved. It has a large and varied library with an incredible amount of third-party support. It managed to come fairly close to bringing many arcade experiences into the home, particularly with the fighting game craze of the '90s. It also had simple, accessible and reliable hardware with no pointless gimmicks and possibly the best (2D) controller ever made. Obviously, everyone's opinion on a subject like this is going to be influenced by their age and relative experience but however you slice it, the SNES has more than its fair share of reasons to be considered among the best.

Personal favorite 2D console is the Sega Genesis and 3D is Xbox 360. Each had the best competition IMO and think is a great thing (I also love SNES/PS3 with TG-16/Wii growing on me yearly).

The controller really seals the deal. SNES is the greatest, and as games get more complex the perfect mix of 2D quick simplicity and complexion in so many genres, it just sets itself apart more and more as a timeless and unique experience.

Good video. I grew up with each generation of consoles starting with the NES, and I would argue that the SNES was the most memorable, also with some really memorable parts with the ps1 and N64 consoles. But I would also agree with other comments that point out that the best console seems to be the one that kids grew up playing. BUT, as an example and argument for the SNES I would put DK country 1-3 up against any other DK games that came after and ask you to find a better one. There’s something to be said about the limitations of a console’s hardware. I would argue that the move to 3d radically changed video games, and not necessarily for the better. The concise and creative uses of the limited 2d hardware really set this generation apart from all future consoles, some of which was lightly broached in this video.

The SNES is my favorite system of all time, with the PS1 and PS2 coming in close behind. While I love the Genesis (and any system of this era, really), the SNES is where I honestly had the most fun. All the incredible RPGs that I could just throw myself into, hours spent on Street Fighter 2 and Final Fight. Just amazing.

I agree with you on the SNES being my favorite. Yes, it helped that I was a teen in the 90's. And I believe they worked hard at being great with having stiff competition from the Genesis. Great times!

I agree with all of your points. Because, call me crazy but, as someone who got into the SUPER NINTENDO, full time, around 2017, with the SNES Classic Mini Console, I personally find the SUPER NINTENDO to be the absolute most perfect game console ever. Even more-so than the Nintendo Switch. Because as much as the praises are well deserved in being the best modern console by Nintendo, I find it hard to accept the Switch as THE Perfect Nintendo Console. Which to that, I'd say my heart leans more towards the SUPER NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM, for that title alone.

wow almost 700 comments! you're really blowing up retrobird! i used to believe the SNES was the greatest, and certainly my favorite. but after diving much further into the PSX library, i am now at odds. It's definitely one of those two, and i lean kind of toward the PSX these days. It's got tons of the SNES flavor and some of the greatest games of the 90s on top of that. SNES for me will always carry my two favorite games of all time: Mario World and Link to the Past. But the PSX has a much larger library of GOATs and tons of just "plain" A+ great games. it helps that the PSX has tons of SNES ports and arcade ports of that 90s pixel golden age, along with some incredible 3d games. it's tough. i lean PSX, but used to claim SNES. it's definitely one of those 2 though.

Great vid and fun stuff here. I'm a Sega guy to the end, but the fact is the SNES is home to so many classics. Before the Switch arrived on the scene, it was hard to argue that it wasn't Nintendo's best console imo. I still want to pick a SNES up one day. Also, the purple color scheme and convex/concave buttons are still cool.

Yes. The answer is yes. It will always look amazing, the catalog will always carry some of the very best of a number of genres, they run on just about every bit of modern tech out there, and it literally molded my childhood. So to me, there's really no contest. It has the best Zelda, the best Mario, the best Metroid, the best Final Fantasy, the best Mana game, the best Mega Man, the best platformer (yes, it's Donkey Kong), the best JRPGs, the second best SRPG, all of the good Disney games, and enough ROMhacks to keep you busy until the end of time. End. Of. Discussion.

I was born in '97 (which incidentally means I'm the same age as FFVII), so I didn't discover the SNES until I emulated games in my teens and later was introduced to the classics (and the controller) by the SNES Classic. Despite this, I would agree that it is definitely one of, if not the, greatest consoles of all time. I do agree that the Genesis had some fantastic games, though. Incidentally, my favorite _system_ to play overall is the Nintendo DS, which in a number of respects feels like a successor to the SNES while also doing enough outside-the-box stuff to be considered the Miss Frizzle of gaming -- it took chances, it made mistakes, and it got messy, but it provided a unique experience and in the end we all learned something from it.

I think the reason why these systems (and the GBA, for that matter) tend to be so lauded is because they were at the perfect intersection of having enough power to do cool stuff and have beautiful pixel graphics, while also having a number of limitations that the devs had to devise ingenious solutions to solve, which led to a lot of really interesting games that looked great. I suspect the Genesis may also be in this category, but I am significantly less familiar with it so I can't say for sure.

I think Super Nintendo is well justified in the top spot if someone feels that way. For me though its the Playstation 1. Although I feel it may not be solely the console itself but that I feel this was the best generation for video games, Also the PS1 had just crazy variety of game types.
@neogohanamv5 ай бұрын
It also finally progressed beyond Nintendo's "for kids only" approach. The SNES was fantastic, but Nintendo's heavy censorship held it back from more interesting experiences, so it felt less well-rounded than the PS1 which had stuff targeting a wider range of ages. Still, there is a charm to the PG simplicity of the SNES library.

I really have to give it to the Snes and always have, bias and non bias. It is just absolutely superb in all categories! To be honest the 16 bit era is superior to what came next, and I think that the ease of use is the driving factor. Little to no load times, plug a game in and you are good, people tend to forget that aspect often. We waste so much time in loading, as great as the generations after were, they take more time starting and transitioning. The games were solid and many are works of art, it is a close call between Snes and Genesis. It is all speculation but I think the Snes really holds its own in contest, without needing much debate to back up it's credentials.

Super Nintendo is my personal favorite. It was Nintendo doimg everything they do at its most refined, and had a balance of simplicity and complexity that hits the sweet spot for me in its library. The pixel are and chip tunes of that time have generally aged extremely well, and there are quite a few games to still discover or return to time and again.

Loved the video Retro Bird! As always you had some wonderful points! To this day I can’t decide which consule I like more between the original Nintendo and the Super Nintendo so I might just have to call it a tie at this point. I think that overall there are more good games on the original Nintendo but I think the Super Nintendo is clearly more top heavy if that makes sense..? My favorite game of all time is Chrono Trigger for the record.

7:20 pro-tip about Super-R-Type for SNES, there's an IPS patch that enables the SA-1 chip and eliminates slowdown. The same guy made patches for Contra 3 and Gradius 3 as well. Gradius 3 was especially notorious for slowdown since it was a launch title, so the developers didn't have the experience on how to maximize the consoles hardware yet. konami learned quickly though.

The snes had an amazing library that covered pretty much every genre. The only ones I can think of that can hang with it is the first two PlayStations. You could find something for everyone on those things

Damn was hoping for some sort of tournament style set of 1v1s where "everyone" put up the best platformer they could and SNES put up the best platformer it could, etc.
