Most excellent video R.B. thank you for the time and effort it took to make and edit this video. P.s. SUPER NINTENDO RULES (even the purple parts...as a matter of fact, don't take my purple parts. It would be hard to turn off and on or reset or even play the games themselves without the purple parts...) PURPLE!

A little off topic, but I teach high school and the last few years I’ve brought in my SNES Classic on the last day of school. Kids love playing Contra 3, Street Fighter II Turbo, and Super Punch Out. Many have never played these games and are immediately hooked by how much fun they are.

I grew up with a Super Nintendo, but naturally "moved on" as the 64, PS1, Gamecube, Xbox 360, and so on as they came along. But then the Wii had the Virtual Console and so I went further down the SNES iceberg, playing games like Act Raiser, Super Castlevania IV, and Contra III for the first time, and that's when I really realized how great its games were and how well they hold up. Excellent video and choice of games to show off, man!

I was lucky enough to have all 3 of those games growing up, but I have forgotten how hard it could be to get those games back in the day. Games didn't stay in stock, rental stores only had a limited selection, and used game stores were more rare. So even if you were aware of how good these games are, you might never have had the chance to try them out. The VC was great for that, and I'm glad you finally got the chance to try them! They're definitely highlights of the console library!

It's worth remembering that the SNES's biggest rival, the Genesis (Megadrive), came out well over a year before the SNES, during a time of great technical innovation, and it still held it's own against Nintendo's juggernaut.
@inceptional
@inceptional 2 ай бұрын
In some ways, I think that's even more apt for the PC Engine, which really was the first system to make that jump. It even did CD console gaming first too. Both SNES and Genesis were really just next obvious steps from the PC Engine in most ways. The Genesis certainly so, at it simply increased most of the same specs a bit and went with that (more sprites, more backgrounds, one more button, etc. But less colours). SNES introduced some very novel things like proper transparency, Mode 7, and its truly defining controller, but was ultimately just following the lead of the other two systems too when all is said and done (more sprites, more backgrounds, etc). So, yeah, even as a SNES fan first, I think I'd like to give PC Engine the credit it's due there for truly starting the best generation in console gaming imo.

@@FatNorthernBigot Yeah, it certainly held its own technically in many ways. And it ultimately competed pretty much on a level playing field in America and ended up selling in very similar numbers, both in part because of solid hardware and also Sega's hardcore marketing too. It was a similar story in Europe and "other" territories also. Although, obviously, in Japan the SNES really stood on its own there. And I still think the PC Engine deserves a nod there too, as it came out long before the SNES and about a year before Genesis, and yet managed to output more colours on-screen than both, is capable of superior DMA than both [from what I'm told], and even has a faster CPU than that SNES and on par with the Genesis. That's dang impressive for an "8-bit" console. It certainly blew away the likes of the NES and Master System by a long ways when it launched. And it's remarkable how well it stands toe to toe with those two other giants at times. It even outsold the Genesis in Japan, although was a bit of flop elsewhere. The Neo Geo deserves a mention too, but that was a whole other beast. Still, I give it acknowledgement. :) I'd say in terms of system capabilities it would go like this: Neo Geo > SNES Genesis > PC Engine. In terms of libraries, based on quality plus number of games, it would go like this: SNES ≈> Genesis > PC Engine And in terms of hardware sales it would go like this: SNES > Genesis > PC Engine > Neo Geo. I guess that's likely why the SNES is ultimately regarded as the best system overall and even of all time by so many people. It was a very competitive generation to be sure, with a group of 2D consoles that have really help up.

I really have to give it to the Snes and always have, bias and non bias. It is just absolutely superb in all categories! To be honest the 16 bit era is superior to what came next, and I think that the ease of use is the driving factor. Little to no load times, plug a game in and you are good, people tend to forget that aspect often. We waste so much time in loading, as great as the generations after were, they take more time starting and transitioning. The games were solid and many are works of art, it is a close call between Snes and Genesis. It is all speculation but I think the Snes really holds its own in contest, without needing much debate to back up it's credentials.

It is hard for me to choose between the SNES and Genesis as my favorite, too. I don't care, though, since still play both consoles and have a blast!

The last years of SNES gave birth to modern gaming. Games starting looking really good and were getting long. You could save. Starting to feel open world. Does anyone start playing LttP, FF6, or Chrono Trigger and say I can't handle these old graphics and primitive gameplay? Never, not even to this day. Because this is exactly when games got truely classic.

The SNES may be the greatest “all around” console of all time. While the technology for vast open worlds didn’t exist back in the 90s, I would honestly argue that these large expansive worlds have not proven to be more fun than anything the 16-Bit era had to offer. Games for the SNES ranged from being something you could plug and play to sprawling RPGs that had epic stories to tell. Sports games, like Madden and NBA Live, could cover full seasons, while Super Mario Kart and NBA Jam allowed for countless hours of competitive arcade style fun. The creativity that developers displayed was truly mind blowing at the time. 3D games? Star Fox and Doom showed everyone that door to the future. Large detailed graphics? Hey, Donkey Kong County and Toy Story replicated the feel of an interactive Pixar movie come to life. Let’s not forget fighting games. While not the first to do so, the SNES gave, what I consider to be its most important title of the system’s life; Street Fighter II. For anyone who grew up in the 90s and frequented arcades, the fact that Street Fighter II was playable in your living room was astounding. The fact that it was an awesome port that featured just about everything from the arcade only solidified the impression. It even forced the direct competition to change controller options in order to allow for their somewhat lacking versions of the game to even play properly (I’m looking at you, Mr. Sega Genesis). Heck, even the PC Engine had to release a six button controller for their version of Street Fighter II in Japan. It got even better (for Genesis fans) when Mortal Kombat dropped the next year. Now you had arcade competitions AND bloody fatalities at home, too. Mortal Kombat II and Killer Instinct followed suit. Soon, the console market was flooded with “me too” fighting games, looking to take the crown from Capcom’s classic. None of this would have happened had the excellent port of Street Fighter II not found its way onto the Super Nintendo. While the Neo Geo was more powerful and the Genesis was expanding into the world of CD gaming technology, it can be argued that the SNES was the ultimate system. The sound capabilities, graphical effects, color palette, and controller came together to form the greatest all around system from a trusted brand, and all for $200. The legacy of the SNES can be found in every subsequent system since its release. Controllers are mostly modeled after the design of the SNES. Games have taken inspiration from Mario, Zelda, and Metroid more than any other games from the era. Sure, these arguments could be made for the NES, too; but I feel the SNES refined what came before it to a polished FL diamond. It was the perfect system for what any gaming fan was looking for. Other systems had their strengths, but the SNES had the library, the design, the ingenuity, the variety, the ability, and the quality that nearly all other consoles failed to meet. Because of this, in the contest of “SNES vs. Everything,” the Super Nintendo comes out on top.

It also finally progressed beyond Nintendo's "for kids only" approach. The SNES was fantastic, but Nintendo's heavy censorship held it back from more interesting experiences, so it felt less well-rounded than the PS1 which had stuff targeting a wider range of ages. Still, there is a charm to the PG simplicity of the SNES library.

So, it was 2 consoles in one plus it had great games, it has MANY games that I still haven't played yet; it had a DVD player, and audio player. It was the best value for the money and since I'm saying Playstation 2 it also = Playstation 1. 2. Super Nintendo - For reasons said here 3. Sega Genesis 4. NES 5. Xbox 360.

Yeah, it's a bit polarizing. The small buttons, lack of a six-button layout and a d-pad that most would say is a downgrade from the Saturn d-pad stick out. Especially since the Dreamcast has a lot of fighting games (even 2D ones). People don't like the analog stick and feel the buttons are awkwardly arranged around the VMU slot. Personally, I've always loved it. I tend to like controllers that feel different from everything else.

Your points are pretty much identical to mine for the SNES. It represented sort of the pinnacle of the 2D era of home consoles before the next generation would make the dramatic shift into 3D space. The graphical fidelity possible on the system was a pretty big leap from the 8-bit consoles before it and the sound and music were also greatly improved. It has a large and varied library with an incredible amount of third-party support. It managed to come fairly close to bringing many arcade experiences into the home, particularly with the fighting game craze of the '90s. It also had simple, accessible and reliable hardware with no pointless gimmicks and possibly the best (2D) controller ever made. Obviously, everyone's opinion on a subject like this is going to be influenced by their age and relative experience but however you slice it, the SNES has more than its fair share of reasons to be considered among the best.

It looks like your TV might have a bit of the classic Sony "red push" issue going on from your footage. There's a setting in the service menu (labeled slightly different on different models) it usually goes by something to the effect of AXNT or AXIS. If you disable that, or turn down in some cases, you can greatly improve the amount of red push seen on the screen. Any-hoo, keep up the awesome videos and keep eating bananas my friend! 👌💪🍌 Just thought I'd throw that out there.

7:10 There was no problem with the SNES' processor, some programmers just didn't know how to optimize the code enough... Take Gradius 3, for example... A simple code cleaning from a guy named Aendy, managed to get the game rid of almost all of its slowdowns (which, btw, were present in most of the games on ALL platforms - Genesis included). Another aspect that definitely hindered the SNES' capacities were the infamous, cheaper "slowrom" cartridges. On those, the SNES would have to work with like 77% of its processor's speed, which coupled with the previously mentioned not so well coded games, almost always ended on games with slowdown. Good thing that nowadays, there are ppl that optimize the codes and even turn slowrom games into Fastrom ones, just giving the good old SNES a FAIR chance to get rid of this false impression. Nice video, nonetheless... cheers!

It's kind of ironic that you pointed out that the Super Nintendos controller has no gimmicks when practically every console or accessory Nintendo has ever released was a gimmick. Some examples of this. N64 - The weird controller shape Virtual Boy - A VR console in that really weird shape with a stand. The Nintendo Wii - An entirely motion controlled console The Wii U - The Controller having a interactive screen on it. The Switch - A switchable handheld and TV console. The Gameboy - A handheld gaming console, which at the time was a huge gimmick that started the handheld console craze. The Nintendo DS - A touchscreen handheld console. The Nintendo 3DS - Had a very pointless 3D mode build into it.

So, in my honest opinion, the Super Nintendo, is without a doubt, the Greatest Console/System of all time! My brother and I had the NES and later we had the SNES. The SNES was mind-blowing back in 1994 when we got it. Ours came with Super Mario World, Mario All stars, and it had a pack-in, Super Mario Kart. I can remember playing SMK for endless hours as a kid. Later on, I discovered so many amazing titles: Megaman X, Super Metroid, Super Punch Out, Zombies ate my Neighbors, TMNT Turtles in Time, A link to the past, Super Off Road.... And many many more. Every game felt alive, and felt so rewarding and special. I absolutely agree with you to Retro Bird, the SNES controller is the G O A T.
