When the Surface Go launched, many tech journalists and influencers recommended the device as a good option for students, especially considering the affordable price tag starting at $399. Seeing that almost none of these people are actually students, I decided to try it out for myself at my university. Is it actually worth it? Find out in the video.

Excellent review aimed toward it's intended market. I liked your talking points. I'm really surprised the battery life isn't more robust. I love the 10 inch form factor and portability. I have a Asus Chromebook Flip that is similar in size and I love it. I may gaet one of these for the Office Suite (thrown in for free) and I miss Microsoft once in a while. Great review (on both videos) and saved me doing a rubbish one highlighting why students should buy the Go! It’s the perfect secondary laptop if you get the pen as nice size for taking notes in lectures or meetings (I’m a PhD student so the latter in my case). This also then negates the issues around the small class desks and kickstand as much better to use OneNote and pen in a lecture anyway. I love other devices but this is much cheaper then other options that provide a full os you need to use proper office and referencing tools (Mendeley in my case) AND pen support.

@fallinginthed33p
@fallinginthed33p 5 жыл бұрын
A USB Power Delivery power bank is needed to charge the Go properly over USB-C. The original charger does 24 W charging, actually 16 W with the machine running. I use a cheap Quickcharge-capable powerbank but I only get 4-5 W charging with the Go sleeping and just 2 W with it on. Don't do this. Better get something like a RAVPower 26800 that does at least 18 W over USB PD.
@anthonycbrown1952
@anthonycbrown1952 5 жыл бұрын
@@fallinginthed33p I went with 45 watts USB-C PD because recharges are super fast and USB-C will only charge the Go as fast as it can be safely charged (no risk of damage). The thought of losing or having a $1,000 IPad stolen from me is too much to bear. The $399 Surface Go checks all the boxes for a portable lightweight windows solution.

I think this is an excellent device. However, there are often deals for the newest base Surface Pro with the typecover for $600-629. I've seen the 2017 Surface Pro model go for $499 (potentially cheaper as time goes by) with the type cover bundle as well. Unless there is a great deal for the Surface Go with the type cover, you're not getting a type cover, or you can't wait for the Surface Pro deal, I think a Surface Pro is worth the upgrade. You future proof your device and it's at a comparable price if you were planning on getting a Surface Go with the typecover at retail price.

I don't have any experience using the surface line but in my opinion your choosing will depend on what kind of software you must use for make the job done. If your workflow depends almost entirely of full desktop programs, then the surface is the best way to go. But if you're like me and you can solve part of your work with Android apps, want to take lots of notes and also want to have the best of both words in one device (besides Android, you can run Linux on Dex), then go for the Tab S4.

Is there any reason you would not just take off the keyboard when in small spaces? You can easily balance it on small spaces. Also you can also charge from a power pack using USB-C if you need more time. I have used the 4Gb device and I can strongly advise to go to the 8Gb version for students. For keyboard I would also like to mention that the screen is too close to the numeric and function keys and I kept hitting the touch screen :-) After about a month on the device I noticed that the trackpad is too small as you mentioned. But the price (especially the deals with Cyber Monday and Black Friday were awesome to introduce it. It would be nice if they could put an M3 or M5 in this unit and find some space for a larger battery. Overall I liked it and used it basically everywhere. The screen is crisp and setting it to 125% instead of the standard 150% was perfect for me. This unit would be the bomb with an M3 8th gen, 8Gb RAM and 128Gb storage in that form factor, but.... now we are treading into its bigger brother's territory and that is the unit I ended up with... Surface Pro 5 with 256Gb storage and 8G ram and all the goodies... The models are still available although they push the SP6 hard but one just needs to ask. They almost sold me a SP6 with 8Gb and 128 storage but it would not have type cover and pen. Oh and Best Buy does have open box items now and of course the first weeks in January. Be on the hunt!!

The battery is too darn small. I only get 6 hours at medium brightness with WiFi and Bluetooth on, running Office and Firefox. A 35 Wh battery could have given this thing 10 hour battery life which is competitive with the iPad. Instead we have a tiny 26 Wh unit that barely lasts a working day. At least the original charger is fast and there's backup charging over USB-C.

Do you recommend Surface Go 2? It is coming out tomorrow....... The base model $399 looks a bit better (marginally better cpu, screen size etc)....

@@midnight3458 i have the surface 1 rn and tbh it's ok. Good for average programming tasks, but it can get slow at times when having multiple programs running. But still good. . This surface will be able to hold most coding projects. But when you get a real job def gonna need a stronger machine for big projects. However u dont need to spend > 1000$ to get a strong machine. U may find used Macbooks at local shops ($700) that have processor i7, 8gb ram, and 500gb ssd that run like a rocket.

@@joycechu5911 I'm a bit iffy on it though cause I have a laptop so I don't really find the need in getting the sp7. But I feel like I'd keep the sp7 for outdoor use and keep my laptop at home, especially cause it's not exactly light enough for me to carry around.

Do you think it is worth purchasing a Suface go additional to a Laptop (I already have one)? I am thinking About it because I like the idea of the Stylus and because it is a lot smaller than my Laptop which is too big for lectures (I will try out the Laptop tomorrow I am not even sure if it fits on the "desk" lol)

I don't think that is needed really... Those big bezels helps you avoid accidently touching the screen when holding it like a tablet. I think everything is fine except the lack of thunderbolt or just more io, the surface go keyboard cover not being included with the devices price and they have to get rid of the emmc model

If you're willing to pay +$600 for a tablet, you should have enough cash to buy a surface pro 😅. You could also get another sleek laptop for $600 that's more powerful, but you might not get the touchscreen/pen. Also, a 5-hour battery usage will be pretty meh for a fulltime student (Have fun finding those plugs). Overall it's a good review of the tablet... I was going to recommended the Acer swift 3 i5 6th laptop, but the price went up 😂

My 4 year old Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 w/4G LTE connectivity outperforms this in virtually every way. I use this with my S Pen to take notes for classes, create presentations, do research, prepare papers, edit photos and PDFs, didn't need to rely on Wi-Fi, etc.. Is steady on my knees, on a small table top, or anywhere else. Works extremely well with an attached Bluetooth keyboard, or as I use it, with a virtual keyboard using Swype. I type approximately 80-100wpm this way, and get approximately 11 hours per charge so that I'm not searching for a charging port to get through the day in a classroom.

Is it good for coding (net beans) and so??
@gytisdramblewolfskis8521
@gytisdramblewolfskis8521 5 жыл бұрын
should be decent as long as you use all the shortcuts to minimize everything. On vs it's quite easy to hide, show all tabs, Don't think net beans is as good though. I mean if you have netbeans file explorer, error tab, top bars, all open at once, you will probably see like 10 lines of text on surface pro. Not at all desirable. Add a second screen when home and it's a versatile computer for sure. Though I only consider it for it's pen capabilities - want to have notes all on the cloud and with benefit of using delete/color/undo functions, that are not available on paper. Otherwise a minimal laptop is much better, I have asus vivobok S and it's great both 14 and 15.6 inch versions, and on the bigger one you can add ram, memory easily.
