I currently have a dual band Linksys AC1200, I have the modem connected into a 10 port switch and then from the switch to the router. I bought this to either extend the range and have the old router bridge to this one from an outer building that is an the fringe of the Linksys wifi range. I pretty much have everything cabled to the netgear switch (TV, Security system, AVR and so on) This TP link has many more connections, do I still need the switch?

Not really , unless our planning to use this router for something else than high speed internet , the nitty gritty details help manage network traffic but it doesnt guarantee a smooth internet experience , it will depend on the isp your subscribed to , like you just described , either way , buying this router will make little to no difference compared to other newer capabale and cheap routers , something like tp link ac1900 will do just fine without shelling out too much money.

First off... BIG THANKS for the kind words. It is fine to use port 1 and 2 for standard equipment if link aggregation is disabled (It is by default). If you ever think you will have hardware needs that require it in the future, you could always choose to use ports 3 and 4 now instead and leave 1 and 2 open for the future without the need to rewire anything if the opportunity presents itself.

I don't know where to get some honest help, but I'm a complete fool when it comes to this kind of stuff. So sorry in advanced for the stupid questions. I'm looking to get just the pure internet service, but many companies require that I have a landline phone. So will this router work for me just to have the pure internet service and will this accept any internet provider?
@qwazyd0gg
@qwazyd0gg 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not. This router still required a modem from an internet service provider to function, and will not supply internet services on its on. I hope that helps

The router can only provide as close to the speeds as your provider gives you. It won't make it faster, but will still help prioritize traffic for gaming.

I have this router too and it slowed my internet down to 300mbps from gigabit. I know it's the router causing it because if I disconnect the router and go back to using my Comcast equipment, I'll get 900-1gbps speeds like normal. Not happy with this router at all.

@@MrVuckFiacom I would double check the model # and settings of your Comcast router. Here in Canada my ISP has 2 models of modems they offer, one plays well with third party routers thanks for its ability to properly bridge, where as the other doesn't.

Hey Hexxa. I personally have not used the Asus router; however, they are known to be very good and well praised by their owners. I can only speak about my experience personally with the TP Link which I love. Feature wise they both look very similar. I use the TP-Link app a ton, and I'm not sure if Asus offers a similar suite. Hope that helps

my old setup was a BT HH6, it served me pretty well, but with the amount of devices I have in my home (not all on at the same time 15 devices) I found that there was black spots (specifically to the misses downstairs on Netflix), this is my review of this router on day 1 (it may change!), this thing is a beast, it detected just about all the devices connected and through QoS I can set priority on the device or application, so I elevated the priority of misses devices and not drop, I have also setup Alexa support and enabled the onboard Anti-Virus, it has an inbuilt speed test, you can tether to your mobile and it can keep track of network Traffic. It has 1 2.4ghz (at 1gb) and 2x 5ghz channels (at 1.2gb), lets not forget the 16gb onboard storage (Plex Server?) and the it also comes with 8 network connections rather than your 6 from your ISP. There is also the onboard Antivirus and VPN and IPTV settings..

Your router doesn’t control latency though..
@KingHalbatorix
@KingHalbatorix 5 жыл бұрын
Any router will absolutely introduce _more_ latency. Their claim is intentianally ambiguous to trick uneducated buyers, but what they mean is the router is optimized to introduce as little latency as possible. A lot of other high end or enterprise grade routers have the same optimizations, but not cheap consumer grade routers.

@Archie The Dog Hey I have the same router and I'm noticing that it's actually slowing down my speed from gigabit to 300mbps. I tested it by plugging back into my Comcast modem and noticed _way_ faster speeds than my TP-Link router. I factory reset the router and it worked just fine for a few hours and ended up slowing down to 300mbps again. Have you noticed anything wrong with yours? Their feature set is honestly identical as far as automated QoS, trend micro support, and more. The TP-Link has more LAN support plus 2gbps connections for NAS and "future proofing". I haven't used the Asus, but I can tell you I'm extremely impressed with the TP-Link unit.
