I kind of take the Scotty Kilmer attitude: as long as your using OEM parts and oil, and your following the scheduled maintenance or before: something like a TRD filter may be better at a microscopic level looking at a graph. But in terms of will it make or break…. No, the standard filter would just be fine and you’ll get plenty of mileage out of the vehicle. Like the guys that have Tundras getting 400-500+ K miles off basic maintenance. I doubt they wasted the money on a pretty filter. That’s really all it is. But if it makes people happy and they are willing to drop the extra bucks, then what the hell. That’s why they sell them. Easy money.

Right, this mostly seems like something to get some extra money because it has thr TRD name. Also there should be no concern about the paper filter collapsing. I have personally never heard of that happening even in 10k+ oci.

Those metal end caps seem unnecessary considering they have that metal screen down the center of the paper element housing integrated into the cap. I had a Hengst setup on my ecotechs and they didn't have that metal screen to support the filter. The filter itself had a plastic core and they would be collapsing by 6-7k miles. (The factory recommended intervals)

I used a different Toyota dealership for my final Toyota Care service. After 5000 miles, I did the oil filter myself. I discovered they torque the hell out of the filter, drain plug, and skid plate bolts. The heads of the skid plate bolts snapped off while I was trying to loosen then. If you want the job done correctly, do it yourself....after you watch Chloe 's video.

I spend twice as much buying a synthetic filter that's rated for 20,000 miles. I change my oil every 5,000 miles but by buying a higher quality filter, I feel that it's fine to only change that filter every other oil change. Oil analysis tells me that should be fine. It also saves me the trouble of fooling with that cartridge style filter at every oil change especially if it's winter and it's cold. I don't have a garage so it gets done in my driveway.

The glass polymer filter don't actually filter out as much as a paper filter so they're worse for the fine particulate and daily driven cars. Their advantage is they don't clog up as easily so they're more suited for a race engine which sees more rapid wear but also has it's oil changed more often to keep flushing out the very fine particulate.

Never had problem with dry oring for 6 years. Only problem is my plastic oil filter housing got cracked from metal oil filter tool. Metal tool slipped then snapped on plastic housing. Dripping oil through cracked plastic housing. If I started engine running, oil would faster drips. If I revving inside garage as 3,000 rpm, oil puddle and splattered on floor. I never seen oil leaking so bad after engine idle and worse at engine rev. That's how leak is bad so I refused to drive Toyota until I get new metal oil filter housing. Never had any problem with oil filter orings because I replace oring at every 5,000 miles. I did 17,000 miles with extended oil motor but only planned long travel& vacation. If no plan, I'll stick 5,000mi intervals with performance or platinum for good additives like zinc, anti-sludge, etc. No oil consumption since that engine NEVER had semi blend or conventional oil. 100% full synthetic at early 50,000 mi. Then I switched to advanced full synthetic for better additives thanks to farm project KZbinr. My oil cap look like new factory at 150,000 miles. Comparing to my family's Toyota with 150,000 miles of oil caps look dirtier because they always go oil shop that does conventional oil and NO additive. My family does 5,000 miles and don't skip. I think oil shop picked conventional oil or skipped oil change to maximize profits as possible. Screw oil shop lol

They control the oil pressure for a lot of other systems and its important for them to be lubricated properly. Maybe in your 1990's Toyota, but not performance vehicles with extremely tight tolerances. I've had many problems with backyard mechanics doing this exact thing and hearing "my engine isn't running right" afterwords lol.

First off, the synthetic material in the TRD is wire backed, which gives it more structural rigidity. Also, it has greater filter potency at a lower micron compared to the "paper" aka cellulose filter. It can probably last you 8,000 - 10,000 miles.

How do you expect to see the difference during your next oil change...? Time, Temperature and the small amount of fuel combustion passing through the segments makes your oil go bad. To do a fair test you have to do your oil change at the exact same amount of km/miles, drive the exact same roads and the exact same way. Even if you do all that, you won't see anything different in the oil pan once you drain it. The filter is located after the oil pump and before the engine parts. The oil is filtered, go trough all the engine component and go back in the oil pan. I have no doubt that TRD filter has a better filtering capacity, but there is no way you can prove that unless you use special device to test both filter and then analizing the oil that comes out of the filter. Wich you can't do in an engine.
@damyanovasen
@damyanovasen 2 жыл бұрын
From the looks of it I think the TRD filter is finer for better filtering when you’re driving in dusty conditions. Some of the air that passes through the air filter has some tiny tiny particles that go to the cylinder and then get in the oil. If you don’t baja race your truck you shouldn’t be needing one.

I run k&n and idk if it's better but BMW Mann filters just aren't the same as they used to be and hunting for one Everytime I change the oil sucks. So for now K&N is my next best.

I've seen a couple of your videos and I like the attitude above all but, please let me clarify a few points from this video: 1. You never stretch the o-rings when placing them. 2. Viton are better for some applications. It depends on the fluid and temperature. If OEM Toyota filters come with another kind, use those. Look up a temperature comparison chart. Toyota probably uses nitrile or polipropilane. Me and my family have had probably 7 or 8 Toyota vehicles in the last 25 years and only had problems when we used non OEM parts because we couldn't find them in the crappy 3rd world countries we have lived.

I bought the aluminum cartridge holder like on my old Avalon because it was ridiculously hard to get off every time. It offers better cooling as well.

Check out the fortnine channel, they tested paper vs metal vs fiberglass oil filters and the results are surprising. Turns out that a boring paper oil filter is better at almost everything. Most "performance" filters have less surface area and worse filtering media.

Funny they had canister style filters like this on everything back in the 40s, 50s, and probably early 60s. Every company went away from them and went to the screw on style of today. Now we see several going back to the canister. There was a reason they were phased out.

Actually the spin on filters are spin on canister filters. But you are right the first oil filters used in automotive engines were cartridge style filters like this. But even up until the 1960s some engines didn't even have an oil filter.

If it’s factory doesn’t have metal filter cap, don’t swapped. It’s not same dimension and filter doesn’t do filtration!

OEM is better then TRD for example on my case. TRD thermostat runs the engine cooler while the OEM is hotter. Heat is good for engines. Unless your flooring it 24/7 that’s the only reason to run a thermostat like this.

Toyota's 10K oil change interval recommendation on new vehicles scares me. 90% of my mileage is highway and I know in Europe they only change the oil once a year but I don't know what to do.

Look at the Baxter Performance Oil Filter Adapter. That way, you can use a regular filter and not just a cheap paper one

TRD is OEM. So if you're getting TRD from any supplier except Toyota, you're probably getting a counterfeit.

I used a filter that was structured similar to that one and since it's got that metal mesh it clogs really fast and my V8 was never at proper operating oil pressure when I ran those supposed to be better filters I mean iam sure they might be but, just pay attention to how you're vehicle responds before you end up with damage

Changing the oil per factory recommendation is the best for most vehicles. Dirty oil will clog up the filter and cause the bypass valve to open and will let dirty oil to circulate. Not good.

Wasn't there a video that shows the performance of different filter material? Iirc paper filter was the best for the money as the other material wasn't too far in terms of performance.

Filter media is of the same design as the wix xp filter. Idea is that if it flows better you spend less time bypassing the oil filter. This is great if you spend a lot of time up in the rpms so say someone who’s running shorter final drive gears or motors running a higher pressure oil pump would benefit from this.
