Is the TWSBI Vac 700R a Pilot 823 Killer?!

I’ve had both and both are very good pens but at the end of the day,there’s no substitute for quality. It lasts a lot longer and is worth paying the extra money.

I have had TWO Pilot Custom 823 pens to develop cracks in the barrel, and begin leaking. :(

I ignored the reports of cracking in the TWSBIs then got one and it developed a small crack 😢 Now I'm scared to get the 823 too haha. And the whole reason I want to invest in a higher end pen is because of the quality haha.

Tonight I rated in this order lowest to best: TWSBI Eco dull lines heavy steel nib pushing Too Smoothly; Fine nib P C 823, okay on some paper, definitely superior to the lower end TWSBI, not consistently artful and a touch small in my hand; Nakaya Long Cigar Writer M-flex nib, clear conversation ender. Excellent pen, though as a lefty I have to work it properly (side writer pushing pen neither over nor under) at a low angle. When done the Nakaya is where one wants to be for interpolating texts, or for notes that don’t soak into books too much. A classic. Never seen HJ review a Nakaya either. Toss the Eco, convert the PC823 into a mere House Pen and admire the value and virtues of a Nakaya! That’s that.

Are vac fillers harder to clean?

Oh Yes! Lots of flushing. You can’t disassemble the Pilot. Well, you can, but it’s not recommended.

What would be the best mid-range Japanese fountain pen to purchase? I have a Pilot Metropolitan and a couple of Platinum pens.

Mid range being how much? The 823 is as good as any pen at any price.

@@anibal5845 Sure, the E95S is pretty interesting. I don’t have it but people like the Pilot Custom 74, I love the Vanishing Point. Some great options there.
