At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.
We’d love nothing more than for you to give us as much feedback as possible, so we can make this channel the best it can be.

We in Sunny South Africa have been fortunate enough to have had a limited run of these great vehicles, called Lumina here , from about 2005 to 2012 and they have already achieved collectors status here and are escalating in Price at about 15% per annum. I run a series 2 2006 6litre SS UTE in Diamond Black metallic with only 103,000 kms... on the clock which is factory stock except for a set of loud pipes and this is a real head turner over here. I fully endorse the comments of the tester. This is a highway cruiser par excellence and can easily see off many modern "sports" sedans and hot hatches in the stoplight grand prixs'.This is a vehicle from a time when life was a lot better than today and they will never make em like that again. I love my UTE.....

The Commodore ute is the only modern ute where the body is cast as one piece. With any other manufacturer, they construct the tray separate and bolt it to the body leaving ugly gaps. Respect for the design.

I just bought one a week ago (March 2024), 2011 VE Series II with 71,900km's on the clock spotless all original condition Heron White with a genuine Holden hard-cover on it. Paid $33k for it but I figure that's reasonable maybe slightly high but I am happy with it. Still even has original exhaust system on it.

A bit of trivia. A Chev v8 that was used to pump water here in...central Oz...arrived to our stores. It had laboured for, get this - 43000 hours. So imagine driving at say 1200-1500 rpm at more or less 100km/h, this engine had done time wise on a highway the equivalent of over 4 million kilometres. Now your mind will boggle. Not even the piston rings were changed. Change of oil every 300 hours, custom made multi stage air filtration system, some gaskets replacement, water pumps and pulleys. Major service 10,000 hours. The motor that replaced it? A Chev v8 from Mexico that cost $5.5k Brilliant 👏

I own a white 2008 Pontiac G8 (Commodore VE) with only 77K miles (124Km). I use it as my every other day driver & I love it. It gets attention almost everywhere it goes, & I get offers to sell it several times a month. It is a shame Holden & Pontiac are gone! A G8 Ute sitting next to my G8 sedan was in the planning stages when Pontiac was cancelled. Saturn was another great brand in the United States that was cancelled the same time as Pontiac. Fantastic review mate. I thoroughly enjoyed it, Thankyou. I have a VE SS-V ute 2010 6sp manual and just ticked over 200,000km, daily driven and it still purrs nicely. Fuel usage around town is about 13-15/100, but on freeway is 8-10/100. Wifey has a VE SS Sportswagon 2009 Auto and about 210,000km, daily driven on short trips 15-20km/100, on freeway for weekend getaways, we see 8-12km/100 fully loaded. Both religiously serviced between 5-10,000km semi-synth virgin base, and the biggest issue we had is both had slight rear main seal leak. changed both and all good. There is a slight tick on startup which means the lifters are on their way out. All suspension is stock on both except for kings springs on my ute and aftermarket engine mounts. I Love'em.

It is by far one of the best cars i have owned and compares not to badly with the Porsches or Mercedes ive owned in the handling department.

Only normal wear and tear. Just recently upgraded to heavy duty clutch. I love cruising in this thing. My kids love it. It has become part of the family and we look after it. It's a keeper. Awesome review mate. I found a LHD Chevrolet Lumina SS (based on a VE SS), 2008 model 6sp manual with 15,000km on it. It hadn't moved since 2009 and it was a complete barn find here in Dubai. It still had the original tyres from 2008 on it. Put some 6 piston brembos on it, BC racing coilovers, HKS Oil Cooler, OTR intake, headers, straight piped exhaust and a tune on it. Also i did the interior in alcantara so it looks way better. I updated all the lights, screens and electronics to 2021 stuff so it runs so smooth now and is way more comfortable, while still being a really fun car to drive. So happy with it as my weekend car. It has been a brilliant car and I love it to bits. It's a 6 speed auto which I swore I would never buy, but as soon as I drove it I was hooked. Displacement on Demand IS a problem with these resulting in the hydraulic lifters that deactivate to get stuck and wear the followers on the cam lobes. This is a shame when you consider the LS motor was supposed to be near bulletproof. Would LOVE to buy a UTE but good quality copies of these are hitting near to $100k with import charges.

I've had my Atomic SSV 6M ute since new in Nov 2007. Can concur with you on all your comments. The noise in the driver's seat is a crack in the plastic sheet that forms the support for your torso. I've also replaced the windscreen rubber trims, scuttle vent cover, roof trims, both door trims (that wipe against the window), headlining, gear lever boot, tonneau cover and retrimmed the steering wheel. Repainted sail cover behind rear window due to clear coat failure. Headlights need refurb and front bar has sagged. Both cats replaced (they fell apart internally), clutch replaced under warranty at 18,000km, tailshaft centre bearing replaced 1 yr ago at 125,000km, windscreen washer reservoir replaced. Nearly all of these things are normal wear and tear replacements. I still love the car. I have installed a rear view camera because the rear vision is crap. It does have an appetite for tyres though (and no, I have never done a burnout in it). The car is otherwise stock as a rock. Just wish it had the extra trip computer windows that the Calais comes with. Even with all I've said, I love the car. That's why I've still got it after 14 and a half years.

I had the S2, thunder, loved it, came with all the SSV stuff like info 19” rims partial leather etc. just didn’t like the missing info screen they took out and put in vents! Couldn’t sell it back then for much better than half Pprice now would be worth a fair bit! Same as my VL Calais in immaculate cond, got peanuts for it.

I wish I had this Sick Ute! Sadly, I live in the US, so I don't have access to it nor the money to buy a modified left-hand drive version of it. But I do have the next best thing, a 1990 Chevy Caprice! Durable like an Aussie car mixed with a Russian Lady Riva!

Cam plans are coming, hopefully supercharger kit later and it's a lifer car that's for damn sure!

A common thing to go wrong on these types of LS engines is the plastic chain tensioners (depending) and the oil pressure check / relief valve on the oil pump. It’s a good idea to keep this engine (again depending on type) stocked with good fresh oil and to do it regularly probably a bit more then most. Reason being as this check valve is the first thing to get touched by the oil in the pan it can accumulate debris or get sticky from old oil - the filter is always after the oil pump. I’d also be running a good quality engine oil I guess cleaner to keep this valve good. If not it can result in low or even no oil pressure and that is a big flaw and a big hole in the old wallet.

I have owned a completely factory spec 09 SSV and it was a magnificent ute. Sold it with 135k on it and wish i still had it as i upgraded to a VF which has far more tech in it but it just doesn't feel the same quality as the VE. The VF has just clocked up a 100k on it and now i have no idea of what to replace it with as i don't want a 4x4 diesel shit box.

I recently sold my early SSV sedan and probably the only complaint I had was the stock clutch. The slave cylinder is in the bell housing and so is the bleed valve. On the manual the slave overheats and the clutch pedal can stick. A replacement clutch (and remote bleed valve) would do wonders and allows you to breathe the engine a bit more with exhaust and intake and tune. It’s still a bit boaty but bang for buck there is nothing else out there that comes close. If I didn’t need the space and the cash to upgrade what was my family car, I’d have kept mine.

Had a similar scenario (needed some cash and upgrade to a family car at the time to carry Great Dane in rear - wagon), so sold the HQ Monaro LS coupe, and bought a Camry wagon at the time. I sure hope you don't end up regretting your decision and punch yourself in the head regularly like I have had to do from that stupid ars.e decision, ha :-) good luck though.

Great video! I did have a question however about the SS models. How does the AFM go in terms of saving fuel and noise when driving in suburban areas? Currently have a VE series 2 Omega in the same color and it is amazing to drive. Not quite as much power and the Sv6 or SS variants but still a breeze to drive and goes when I need it to. Still looks amazing even with the standard body panels. Eventually I will look to possibly moving onto a VE Sv6 or SS or possibly a VF if theyre not too pricey in the coming years. Fingers crossed!

What you save on fuel with the AFM model you will pay back in getting either a rebuild with AFM Delete kit, or failed lifters replaced with AFM delete kit installed.

Yep, I had a failed lifter in my L77 engine at 95,000km, VE Series 2. Removed and replaced with a new LS3 for not much more than a rebuild would have cost. If you can get a non-AFM car you'll have more reliability long term.
@dutchaus5813

I purchased a series 2 with AFM 85k stock standard. Did my research and have decided that fresh oil and filter every 5000k should keep the lifters in good nik, wait and see. As for economy, town driving and giving it a squirt occasionally 400k from a tank, premium fuel only. I found driving it in sports shift mode seemed to suit where I live and I get slightly more than in normal drive mode. As for “common” VE faults, abs sensors, harmonic balancers, oil pressure switch (when this fails it stops AFM from working) replace it with genuine, aftermarket ones are crap, a mate has replaced 4! One thing with AFM models, upgraded exhausts will make it sound like a truck when operating! Hope this helps.
