My father (historian) always used to say that Queen Victoria didn't really die until 1957 (i.e. the year of the Suez crisis, when Britain had to come to terms with its huge reduction in power and influence). Although it does look as if the 'triple alliance' nearly got away with it, something I hadn't realised. Thankyou, Indy! Interesting about Earl Mountbatten, too. I did know about the 'run on the pound' and the oil crisis (and the American role in this) however, both of which were a powerful reminder that the UK was no longer the world's No 1 superpower in the way it had been late in Victoria's reign (and a learning experience for the French, too). Still, I suppose it could have been worse. The Austrian Empire took only months to completely collapse and dissolve back in 1918.

@@TimeGhost Dad was an RSM of the second Battalion The Parachute RegtHe told me once and forgive me if I mess up detail but he was on board a plane with Arch Bishop Makarios . and At one point were awaiting orders whether to toss him out of the plane... I don't think he liked him too much he was sent to Suez, Cyprus, and Palestine he told me they were the best days of his life. Thank you for listening

I've read some of the Arabic newspaper reports of these events (my grandpa was born in the 30s and he collects them) and their tone is "superlative only" as Dickens would say, from "best of times" to "worst of times". Their attacks on western imperialism are absolutely vicious, and their announcements of losses swing from celebrating martyrs to foretelling the collapse and doom of Arab culture and independence within days. It's hard to get an idea of the event described because of how charged their language can get.

I think this is a prime example of how humans aren't inherently good or bad, just survival oriented. We (in the USA, that is) tend to think of the British and French as the 'good guys' because they were one our side in the world wars and the cold war, and in WW2 they were undoubtedly on the significantly-less-wrong-side of history. But we also have to recognize that British & French global imperialism wasn't all that different from the things we claimed to be fighting against in WW2 and the Cold War; brutal, undemocratic subjugation & exploitation of other humans.

Yeah, USA has been the bad-guy many times (transatlantic slavery, first nations genocide, the rape of the Philippines, invasion of Mexico, oppression of minorities, I could continue). I don't believe in 'good' or 'bad' people/nations/things though; rarely is one side completely moral. Take the Cold War, for example; the Soviet Union was brutal and undemocratic to all of it's subjects, but the USA still had big issues with race, and both sides participated in the overthrow/suppression of democratically selected governments that they didn't approve of. History is rarely good v bad (though sometimes not great v EVIL; the Axis really tried their hardest to be as terrible as possible). It's just a case of one group trying to survive & thrive in a way that conflicts with another group's desire to survive & thrive.

The power dynamic of France and Britain trying to leverage their position as 'major powers' against Egypt to get what they want while the two actual major powers disapprovingly look on and prepare to intervene if the Brits and French get their way is so interesting. As an Egyptian I would with all respect, disagree. No Egyptian Ive heard of wether the head of state was called Nasser, Narmer, Sheshank, or Ramesses , ever wrote a "Meine Kampf", or perhaps decided to paint world maps in one colour ,or even ,started a Holocaust, instigated a Pogrom, conducted an Inquisition or for that matter left our beloved Egypt to cross the oceans to impose her dear culture on others and and parasitically extract the wealth and blood of other nations. So Im afraid the very Continent, People and Nations you are basing the historical parallel on ,cannot and should not, so long there is breath still left in Men and as history is still being recorded ,,compare between sheer fear of repeating another European started World bloodbath by cowing up to the German Chancellor at Munich in 1938 ( not started by any Egyptian in 1914, nor ended by any Egyptian in 1945) As such appeasing Hitler is one thing, destroying another Great nation whose Civilization's continuous uninterrupted duration outlasted the length and breadth in history of all the rest added and mixed and combined for the mere act of Nationalizing a company that Lord Avon (Anthony Eden) had the same right to do to any British coal mine in s pilt second signnature. What smells like it feels like it and definitely was IT is called Imperialism not Appeasement.

Concentration camps and pogroms hadn't happened yet. You're also seeing this in a very nationalistic and ethnic way, the idea that an Egyptian would need to have been involved in nazi gemany for there to be any concerns is ridiculous. From the British and French perspective at the time, last time they had a questionably democratic strongman in power try to twist their arm, they complied and it backfired, ending in WW2.

But the goals of National liberation from Foreign dominace are totally different from the goal gradually being unveiled to Europe as you with all respect said "with the benefit of hindsight" too. Such mentions of living space, taken from others who will either work or die, races already placed in lower and upper echelons before even the summer Olympics of 1936. This entire concept is different than the Egyptian case . Had the case of Egypt been the same I dont think the Tripartite Agression against Egypt in 1956 would have needed a Sevres protocol. They could have eradicated Egypt off the Map if there was a single shred that could tie , or link ,or even resemble indirectly, even the slightest most irrelevant actions of Germany 1933 - March 1939. Egypts nationalizing our canal compared to swallowing Austria snatching the Sudetenland and then digesting the rest of the Bohemian plateau . Eden and the rest of the Tripartite Agression countries knew the difference full well. Yet Eden tried to play the appeasement card which might perhaps make some sense in Europe but from the mountains of the Sierra Maestra to the depths of Africa and far flung corners of Asia they were listening to Radio Cairo (not as Indy unfortunately limited the scope to the Arabophone world) because despite the fact that Egypt certainly wasn't calling for a Westminster style democracy across the globe , it wasn't. But Egypt's message was clear and started a wave all over the world, to stand up , and do the best possible to liberate what has been usurped from all the nations that have tasted the bitterness of Imperialism and economic exploitation and in many cases colonization. Appeasment perhaps also has a less inocent peaceseeking face in that it looked more like a scramble to gain time to prepare for the next round rather than anything else. Not being Nationalistic or anything it was the same nations that "fought for freedom and justice" during the Second and First Wars, that themselves sought to manipulate these concepts in the form they desire while depriving millions of others who also now had to fight for these very goals. Egypt being no exception amongst others who also took up the same mantle not burdened by words and descriptions of their rightful struggle, words and descriptions created in far away places and that have nothing to do with them. This said I must once more express my respect to your view.

There are no evidence that it was an actual massacre, eye witnesses from the IDF side said they were fighting the Fedayeen (the Fedayeen attacks on Israel are what drove Israel into the conflict in the first place, according to this series). The Egyptian side said it was random executions. Without evidence, it's impossible to say who's right.

I can't testify as to how the IDF was back then, I know for a fact that this can't happen today (and that's why I'm reluctant to believe this happened unless I see evidence). Out of Wikipedia: Israeli authorities say that IDF soldiers ran into local militants and a battle erupted. Meir Pa'il told the Associated Press, "There was never a killing of such a degree. Nobody was murdered. I was there. I don't know of any massacre." So was there a firefight or a massacre? without evidence, no one really knows.

As we are approaching the 64 anniversary of the crisis this month I recommend watching a long feature called Portsaid which is a sort of a propaganda movie it was produced in 1957 immediately after the crisis, it narrates how the people of the city stood up to the invasion. Derek Varble, The Suez Crisis, 45. Israeli tanks were largely able to roll past Egyptian infantry and get straight into the City. As, Indy said, this only took the best part of one morning, start-to-finish. "Relatively bloodless" is obviously, by definition, relative. If you are confused about what this relativity then watch out for other points in the series where Indy details the protracted skirmishes. Let us know if you have any more questions!

The impression I was having is that "ö" in Dag Hammarskjöld had a somewhat more stiff pronunciation (with lack for better words at this time). Gaza strip as the Sinay has long standing cultural links to Egypt and at the time were under direct Egyptian military occupation . There was some element of "local militia" but by all accounts they fled the moment fighting started leaving regular Egyptian troops to fight . All organizations attempting to use term palestinian in their name in attempt to create semblance of legitimacy were created either after 1967 or just a few years prior in and around Ramallah - then occupied by Jordan or Jordan itself. Due to political pressures between Egypt and Jordan none of those fledgling organizations had any presence in Gaza and would have had no part in conflict.
