You are right to point out that there is something a bit strange with the XBox Series X and it's Black Levels - it does that in other modes too - like when using VRR. But I think it's not so bad that a bit of fiddling with your TV setting won't mostly compensate for it. For someone like me who isn't going out and buying racks and racks of discs it's perfectly adequate I feel.

If you're ok with less than ideal blu-ray playback then the console is fine. If you want the best possible image you can get then you want a dedicated blu-ray player. Someone who is watching on a Vizio, TCL, or Hisense isn't going to notice a difference. Someone who is watching on a high end OLED very well could. There are other things a dedicated blu-ray player can do that a console can't as well, like play SACD, DVD-A, video and audio files from USB, etc. It all comes down to what you expect to get from the player and what it's worth to you. Same reason Microsoft is selling an XSS as well as an XSX, not everyone needs/wants the top of the line and that's perfectly fine.

@@darrenhayes7786 I can't speak for LG players as I've never had one, but I have had a few Sony players and have had great luck with them. The drive in the Xbox may be made by Samsung but the playback depends entirely on the Xbox blu-ray app. I'm not sure if they've changed it or not but on the original Xbox One console I own the audio output was inferior to a standalone player. Not sure what 30, 60, and 120fps has to do with anything. What tv are you watching on? Just watching this video I could see a difference between the two players. On an OLED there's a big difference between near-black and black. If the Xbox player raises the black level then that would ruin the true-black of an OLED. Like I said though, if the Xbox player is good enough for you then that's fine. I'm not trying to say I'm better than you because I want a standalone player. I wish I wasn't as picky in regards to picture and audio quality, it would save me a ton of money.

I had the exact same thought but figured I'd be alone in this... Good to see I'm not crazy! I suspected mr villaman was making them different colors as a way to label them which is cool but the way the colors surrounding an image affect its perception is profound. This is why I'm not a fan of entertainment center bias lighting in general; it's neat in theory but its effect can be oddly too influential over the perceived temperature of the image. Got both the UB820 and the Series X myself. As a movie entusiast, and collector of 4k discs, the Xbox simply lack too many features and settings to be a fully dedicated player, IMO. Love the Xbox though, but I really bought it exclusively for gaming. The Panasonic player is waay to slow to navigate though, but that picture and sound quality more than makes up for it for me, when used with a calibrated Panasonic OLED. I do think the vast majority however, even a lot of movie enthusiasts will be satisfied with the Xbox as their only player. It really is a great piece of tech.

I initially upgraded to 4K bluray with the XBOX One X at launch in 2017 (I'd had a 4K LG LED TV and PS4 Pro for a year prior). My initial thought was it will be great, 2 for 1 but found the One X player to have a washed out image with poor HDR regardless of how I adjusted the settings (gaming was fine though). As a result I bought an LG UBK80 player as I'd changed TVs to a Samsung QLED (didn't originally go for an OLED because I was worried about burn in) and because Samsung don't support Dolby Vision didn't need the UBK90. I recently upgraded my whole bedroom AV set up due to the new consoles to a 55" LG OLED CX6LA TV (supports 4K / 120Hz with HDMI 2.1 and VRR), Sony UBP-X800M2 4K BR player, PS5 and XBOX Series X. Tried the XSX BR player app and still found it to be washed out plus the app currently doesn't support Dolby Vision for movie playback although the console does supports it for gaming. I suppose a firmware update will fix it eventually but I really like Dolby Vision.

I think the only thing that kind of sucks in my opinion is that Microsoft still won’t update the blu ray app I mean there are still a lot problems with it like bugs, crashes, even frame drop problems like whenever you fast forward or rewind a part on Xbox it’ll act all buggy where as with Sonys PS5 when you fast forward or rewind it’ll act a lot more smoother compared too Xbox’s version I hope that one day with this new generation of gaming Microsoft will finally see what the problems people are having too struggle with some of the bugs on the blu ray app since Microsoft do a really good job on communication and deeply care about their customers and the Xbox community that always find a solution for these types of issues

Just my recent update and experience. So I've always played UHD disks on an X One, and now an X Series. I just got the UB820 a couple days ago, and these comparison videos don't do it justice. Having played both Dolby Vision and regular HDR10 movies on the UB820, there's a big difference/upgrade compared to the Xbox UHD player. I highly recommend those who can, to purchase a dedicated UHD player. I chose the Panasonic UB820 because it's regarded as one of the best players out there, and because it auto switches to Dolby Vision display.

I’d prefer if you were able to actually measure what the black level is on blu-ray player and have you updated the app? XBOX shows green check marks for all available audio/video settings including 4K 120, I am using proper HDMI 2.1 cable on eARC, no other devices are connected, and I did troubleshoot various things, including power cycling, updating system+apps, resetting the console, and clearing persistent storage. To the commenters you will notice elevated black levels, and in many cases you won't be able to defeat it. You can rectify it possibly with the black level control on your television, but this elevated Black level thing is some kind of bizarre.. . if a black level is supposed to be zero (pure black), an elevated level will show 10 to 30 or so (grey's). It's just pretty ridiculous that these kinds of technical issues continue to get through to consumers. Zero is supposed to be zero and that's that. I've also read currently that you have to download the app because I'm sure because of licensing issues you the Xbox won't ship with an installed Blu-ray player that's saving them some money from paying somebody. (Sony). I'm playing on my series X right now but I have yet to try any blu-rays. Case in point anyone playing cyberpunk on an Xbox right now knows what elevated black levels do it completely screws the image from getting your nice super brights to super darks. I'm not sure if the HDR is just broken within Microsoft's coding, or it's just a developer issue. That said hdr on other Microsoft games is perfectly fine so it's likely just the developer screwed the pooch. Monster hunter is another game known for extremely poor HDR implementation. Basically my point is that if it's not implemented correctly and your black levels are elevated you will see it. Watching a source that has a lot of darks in a dark room with elevated black levels is very very annoying.

THANK YOU for your Opinion. You cleared up some things for Me. I just bought the LG OLED CX, so I don't think I need a Dedicated Bluray at this time. I will save my money and enjoy. Thanks again.

Why would you use matrix as a demo when its a 4k transfer. You need to use a true 4k film for comparison man!

If it is shot on 35 or 70mm film it likely exceeds 4K. Did they do the nonsense of a 1080 master?

Dolby vision is in fact coming to Xbox in a firmware update if that makes a difference.

The elevated blacks on Xbox are a bug that will be fixed soon. Dolby Vision support on Blu-rays is expected also. If you're a gamer, you have almost no reason to buy a standalone Blu-ray player. Honestly, the only people buying $500 Blu-ray players are people who buy separate audio components and have dedicated home theaters. It's an extravagant waste of money.

great video compare. to bad for the youtube compression. HDTVTest did an HDR test and the xbox only get 11,11,11 and not 0,0,0 for black levels. Hopefully it is patched some and you could make a new compare. thanks again
