The MT-09 makes a great everyday bike, but does it make a good touring bike? How does it compare to the MT-09 Tracer? In this video I'll talk about what I liked and what I thought could be improved to make the MT-09 an even better tourer!
I'll also talk about my touring setup - luggage, screen, etc.

Awesome scenery! Totally agree, tour on whatever you have, I did an 1,800 mile trip on my Tuono last fall and it was hard at times but totally worth it. I’ve put 20,000 mile on it in 18 months, use it for everything from commuting to touring! I can even get 165 miles out of a tank of gas. Not bad for 175 hp motorcycle!

Leaving to Alaska from Florida on the 2016 Tracer. Indeed, just do it with whatever you ride. A little preparation and precaution will make just about any bike suitable for a 10k trip.

'Take whatever you've got' Well said. Many years ago I went from near London (in the UK) to central Italy on a Honda 250 RS (250 single) two up with luggae some years ago and we took a tent etc. Struggled a bit but it worked. Wanted to dump the pillion after a while though. I recently bought an MT 09.

I've got an XSR900, which is based off the Mt-09. I agree with everything in this video. My biggest concern is the 14L tank, doing just over 100km and I used around 6.5L of fuel ... which is almost half a tank! It was only a two hour trip too ... so on a road trip I'd be filling up every maybe 3 hours? (to be on the safe side). That's a lot of tanking up! And I want to do everything on this bike, especially touring, so it's quite a disappointment. Still a gorgeous bike and I enjoy riding it a lot, just wish it had a bigger tank for sure.
@aluisious
@aluisious 6 ай бұрын
I really don't understand why people complain about having to tank up every 3 hours. OK, so stop and tank for 5 minutes, whatever. The only time fuel range is a real problem is if you're somewhere really remote, like I70 through Utah, and the gas stations are literally 110 miles apart.

Great bike, just as mine! For touring not as good as the Tracer 900 for sure, but as for looks the MT09 is a beauty, thats the main reason i bought mine. As for the tyres, my OEM rear Dunlop tyre did about 6500km, but now a have the sport touring Bridgestone Battlax BT-023 (dual compound tyre), i´m impressed with them, more "sticky" than my OEM Dunlop tyre and for sure they will do more km, cheers mate from Portugal.

Good review, good point, turning a naked bike into a sport touring, it is practical. I did the same thing with my gsxs750 . It is cheaper than buying a sport touring or adventure bike . I added a clip on to my Puig Touring windshield to raise the air to above my helmet. It works really good and cheap, added handlebar Risers, Air Hawk seat.

great video bloke. A breath of fresh air compared to the pro journos and their horsepower obsession. btw i am not illiterate, just had a shoulder operation so only have one hand to type with. this takes me back to the early 70's when I started riding. we rode what we had and most bikes were nakeds. we just strapped bags to the back seat and went with what we had. did not care just went and had fun. it makes me laugh now to see motor cycling journos telling us that this bike better than that for touring because it has 120 bhp and the other only has 95. what a load of bs. we toured with 30 or 40 and thought 60 was cool and thought that a kwaka 900 with 82 hp was incredible. did we have fun and get there? f... yes. yeah its nice to have 120 hp but you can tour with a 250 as long as it's geared to do 100 to 110k's at cruise. its not optimal but you can and if its what you have it should not stop you from getting away and having fun. You just need to be prepared to use the gearbox. a lot. I am riding a Honda XlV700 transalp with 60 hp and considering a Tracer 900 but to be honest I don't need it. The Honda is totally useful. Yet my friends on rs1200s and so on invite me on a run and ask if I think the honda will be okay or do I want to borrow a bike? wtf? Then they proceed to cruise around at 110 kms boring me to tears. (The national limit) I have no idea what they are on about really. I can cruise at 140 if I need to and If I was in europe and we were going to cruise the autobahn I would just put a new front cog on the bike to lower the revs at high speed. i suspect they lied to their wives about needing the 1200 for touring that the forgot they were lying. i undertad it would work better than " honey i dont need it but i am a man and it is the baddest so i must have it. btw i absolutely have no argument against that also being a man. I truly think the pro journos ride so many high spec bikes they are just out of touch with real riders. they test a bunch o bikes and tell you to buy the european model because it is 5% better suspension an "feel" and is $7000 more expensive than the japanese bikes and less reliable with shocking service and parts costs and has 7 dealers across the entire continent. but it is soooooo cool and being an expert ............ same with the expensive luggage. you can put $1200 worth of luggage on the bike and it will be good. it will still work with a 150 dollar decent hiking pack or even some really heavy duty plastic bags. your choice.

If I was thinking of an MT-09, I'd get the Tracer for the bigger tank and long travel suspension. I like the standard screen on the Tracer. The small 14L tank on the standard model is the main reason I wouldn't buy it. 5 1/2 L per 100 km isn't bad at all. Tyres are no problem if you buy touring ones, as you point out. Interesting video.

1990 I agree, for pure touring the Tracer is superior but I like that I can strip all the extra weight off the MT09 for the rest of the riding I do...

I bought the Tracer just about 6 months ago and have covered a little over 18,000 km at an average fuel consumption of 4.4 L/100km from its 18L fuel tank. Love the smooth torque, gear box and its ability to easily cover long distances with exciting twisties. I changed the seat to a more touring-comfortable after market unit, added heated grips and a taller screen. Best bike I've ever had the pleasure of riding, particularly since replacing the original Dunlops with Michelin Road 5s.

G'day Humphrey. I Googled around and settled on a Euro Italia, mostly because most contributors to forum discussions about the Yamaha Comfort Seat were not happy with Yamaha's seat. Recently I did a camping trip involving two full days riding plus exploring excursions that tested my but on the Euro seat to the max. I came home happy with the purchase. My MT-09 Tracer has passed 20,000km since 30October 2017 and I'm enjoying it more and more.

Raymond Hannah, thank you! I have recently bought a Tracer and I love it, but I want to do some serious touring on it and the standard seat gets a bit much for me after 2 hours of riding. I'll look into the Euro Italia seat.

After buying a 2016 FZ09/MT09 I have to say: Replace the stock seat with the "comfort seat" (not talking about the Sargant Seat, that one is more expensive). Will run you about $250. So worth it. The stock seat is not only hard and thin, but also makes you slide towards the tank, the comfort seat does not do that.

I did 3,300 km through Western Europe on my 2014 MT-09, ran flawlessly (except for accidentally filling it up with diesel in Avignon, France). Bought soft saddle bags and tank bag at louis.de store for 125 euros. Puig touring windscreen and extra frame and engine sliders. I cruised the 'A' roads at 125kph, having to stop for fuel every 2 hours. The stock seat is not meant for touring, so I sat on my sleeping bag, problem solved. Ran pirelli diablo rosso 3's and it handled well, same factory tire as many of the Ducati models. I was able to fabricate my own mounting bars for the saddle bags, instead of spending 120 euros for the yamaha kit. The only thing I wish my bike had was cruise control, I bought a throttle paddle that did help a lot (10 euro). This vlogger is right when he said to use what you got, and get out there. What matters is where you go, being comfortable with yourself, and bringing friends (if possible). Having ridden in the USA and Europe, I can say that motorcycling is a brotherhood that transcends language and culture.

When Yamaha refreshed this model, they wasted an opportunity to put a 17L+ tank on it. Makes me kind of mad. I guess the alternative is the MT-07 with another 10 mpg and even less weight.
@Nexus-6

I just don't get manufacturers putting in small tanks on so many bikes. Adding 4-6 liters of more volume hardly adds anything to the tank's "footprint". Meanwhile, we're all stuck having pack, expensive, awkward external fuel containers for most anything beyond 200-250 kms. Ridiculous..
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 6 жыл бұрын
It's refreshing to read someone else with the same opinion on this. What extra weight would a mere 3L of fuel create? How drastically bad would that raise the center of gravity? And furthermore, why not give the customer the choice whether or not they want to completely fill a high volume tank or not? Who said you need to fill it all the way up? At least give us the option to have a solid 200 mile fuel range before the "low fuel" light indicates. Almost leads me to believe it's a conspiracy into developing a mindset of limiting travel distance, or accepting electric bikes with limited range. Sure a person can simply fuel up more often, but why? What if I want to drive out into places where there isn't a fuel station for 200 miles?

Nice vid mate. I have one of the first tracers out and agree the the MT09 (in whatever spec) is a good bike for touring but also good for ‘spirited’ riding or even commuting. One thing I do when touring is have it in rain mode as it makes it smoother and helps fuel consumption. As soon as there are good twisties then I change mode for some fun. BTW, I run on Mich PR 3s as they have most of the benefits of 4s at a significantly reduced price. I swear by them, particularly in the wet. One question; did you have any waterproofing issues with the panniers?

It really baffles me that manufacturers insist on putting such small tanks on their bikes. Adding a 3-5 liters more to the tank capacity makes a huge difference in the bike's range, while not making a big difference in the tank's footprint. Here in Canada, the MT-09 Tracer is more than $2000 CDN more than the MT-09 (~$10K for the MT-09, $12K plus for the Tracer), so they probably want you to spend more money on that to get a bigger tank. : (

Loving the channel, where did you get the soft bag from and what are the details for the straps that hold it on so nicely? Cheers

I'm looking hard at the XSR900. Same engine, same tank capacity as the MT-09. I very much agree, you can pretty much tour on anything but there are those who snipe at that sentiment. I was wondering if you could expand on the wind buffeting discomfort. How long were you riding before it started to bother your neck or was that just something you felt at the end of the day? Also with the more frequent gas stops, it might even be welcome to break that up and unwind more. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks for the post and best wishes.

I had a fz07 prior and my dad and all my friends said I looked stupid trying to ride it so I got a tracer which is even taller than the mt but same bike basically. I’m only 5 11 but I got super long legs so I end up sticking them out and a super weird angle and end up weirdly slunched over on smaller bikes and super sports so it ruins the experience. I sat on a Ktm touring bike and that’s the best one I’ve been on taller and light. Big money but if u can afford it go for the ktms being ur taller than me.

How do you like the windshield? Do you get much noise off of it? Were the heated grips hard to install?
@Brian_R6
@Brian_R6 Жыл бұрын
The windscreen is definitely worth it. It reduces the fatigue significantly on longer touring or highway rides. You feel the wind more on the upper chest and shoulders rather than the entire upper body. I recently installed one and I personally think it makes the bike look ugly and less aggressive but the performance makes up for it.

Can you please let me know if your pannier bags and mounts are specifically for the MT09 or were they for another bike? I like that quick detach style, but they don;t seem to be available for the 2020 MT09. I see a few other applications, but they mounting bracket probably wouldn't work. I would be grateful to get some P/N's etc. from you if you wouldn't mind. Thank you very much!

If you fill up fuel tank to the very top until its almost coming outt, ypu can fit almost 15L. If ridden fairly nicely this will get you 300 kms.

Nice video. But I don't agree it's an economical engine. My car has 185hp, weighs about 1400kg and uses less fuel than that. An economical bike would be e.g. the NC750X or a bigger scooter that has better aerodynamics. But saying the MT-09 has good fuel economy isn't right in my opinion. A fine and fun bike it is though.

I'm surprised by your stated fuel mileage. I've had mine up to 330 km during break-in with a liter left in the tank. Then another time when I was riding fairly aggressively and into a headwind I actually ran out of fuel at around 270 km thinking I would make it to my destination 20 km away. Also, I feel a bit big on the bike at 6' tall. You must look huge on top of that thing at 6' 6"!

Hi there! Your video was extra helpful but i wonder if i could make a more specific question. I am 69 inches and i am planning to buy a mt 09. I will be riding in the city 29 days a month and one day of the month i will have a 60 miles road trip. If i get a big wind screen like yours what is the highest speed you think i could travel without getting tired of the wind? Is a mt 09 a good choice for these needs? I know it is a very specific question...🤭 i would love to listen your opinion. Be safe.

Hi Mate, I have been searching the net for examples of the 2017 MT09 fitted with panniers and found your you tube video.I really wanted to fit the Yamaha bags but my dealer has told me that they don't fit the 2017 bike due to the position of the rear indicators. Like you I have installed smaller LED indicators, your bags seem to fit just fine. I there any issue to worry about?Thanks in advance for your advice, Paul.
@WeNeedASaga
@WeNeedASaga 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul - yep you're correct - bags will foul on the factory indicators but if you've installed smaller ones the bags will fit just fine. If you watch my MT09 one year review video, I have an angle from the back where I discuss this a bit more and you can also get a closer look at the indicators I have to compare with yours.

You mentioned that your about 6'6", but how much do you weigh? I just ask because I'm 6'4" and got a overly solid build if you get what I mean and I'm worried that a FZ-09 won't have good enough suspension or riding ergonomics for me. Any suggestions?
@WeNeedASaga
@WeNeedASaga 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah good Q... I think the factory suspension will be a bit soft but you can put a stiffer spring in for fairly low cost. The suspension is really the only weak point of the bike - it's awesome otherwise.

I'm looking at getting the saddlebags for my Z900 so I can carry more without having to use a backpack..I'm starting to dislike backpacks for riding. And maybe a dry bag that's about 25-35 liters should be fine I hope. Any Opinions on that? Maybe recommendations on dry bags?

well i'm 35 years old and taking my license as we speak, will be done in mid august i believe and than i'm probably going to buy an mt 09. i feel it has all the assets of a bike i like and want. comfy, fun, "safe" with traction control/abs/modes. i'm riding the mt 07 atm when i take lesssons for my license. and it has plenty of power but i'd also like something to grow into and i think the mt 07 is just too small for me as well.. i'm 188 cm tall.. what do you think?

WeNeedASaga, that’s great news! So I’ll buy it ready for when I’d take it touring up in Italy next year. I’m thinking it is also good for the pillion to hold on to isn’t it? Do you think it takes a Givi 51 litre top box? Would I need to buy additional mounting plates?

Shady Moto hi mate! Yes it's the Yamaha top rack. A soft bag won't require an adapter - it's secured with straps which you can do numerous ways using all the holes in the rack. You'll only need an adapter plate if you want to mount a hard top box to the rack.
