My first successful tank was a 20 gallon zebra danio tank. I have a high ph (8.2) and wanted something active. I’ve had them for a little over a year now and I can see how they would not be for everyone, but I love them ❤

My main draw to the Zebra Danios was thanks to me seeing a segment on Scientific American Frontiers with Alan Alda when I was a kid. Seeing hundreds of thousands of these fish being used for scientific investigations into genetics, was an entrancing experience to see! I really want to try this species out some day, and pair it with another underrated fish, the Black Neon Tetra. I just think the combination would be really nice to see, and hopefully, the Danios would not be keen on fin nipping the Tetras. Thank you for highlighting this underrated fish, Jassen! Love your content and keep up the great work!

In 1990 we put a 15 gallon tall in the living room with a few zebra danios and a small AquaClear HOB filter. The tank got very little maintenance. The danios would swim up the HOB outflow and spawn in the filter floss like tiny salmon going upstream to spawn. I would let the filter get pretty funky between media changes. They didn't get fed every day and spent a lot of days eating algae. We still had fish in that tank when we tore it down to move 5 years later. We must have been on the third generation by then. Some of the older ones had bent spines. We had relatively soft water but I wasn't doing very many water changes so it may have hardened a little over the years. I've found that you can often establish a balanced eco-system even in a small tank by just not doing very much.

Great insights. I've got 7 zebras in a 10-gallon doing great. There are too many misconceptions about tank size out there.

A very overlooked fish, I'm glad you did a profile on them. If you have the need for speed these are the fish. It's hard to find a fish that covers more ground at a fast pace than these Zebras. I found when putting them with other fish that they are VERY aggressive feeders and will sometimes gobble up most of the food before the other fish can get at bite to eat.
@jorykozak1239 Жыл бұрын
i have about ten zebras, 5 purple, 5 blue or so. they never stop swimming and what seems to be playing. and yes when it comes to feeding time they school right up to my barbs and neither seem to mind each other.

Giant danios are even more impressive to watch if you've got a big tank. Stick them in a big tank with a little extra water flow and watch them go! Kind of like having pet trout in your living room, only more practical.

Rescued a lizard in the garden so had a tank from that. RIP Lizard. Ended up with a goldfish from the fair last week and that only lasted a few hours. RIP Goldfish. Said I’d go and kit the tank out and get some Zebra Danio’s and so far they’re going great, awesome fish for a first times I feel like. Easy on the pocket so you can get the stuff you need to get a nice set up going with all you need. Highly recommend. Great video here by the way, enjoyed the content. Very informative, cheers.

I like danios in general, but I'll always stick to white clouds as being my suggestion for beginner fish. They are tough and adaptable. Don't require a heater, can live in about any water and will eat anything you choose to feed them. I think they are pretty too. The Zebras would be a great next step for sure!
@lizziesmusicmaking11 ай бұрын
Unfortunately white clouds are illegal in my area, and a fair number of other areas. Which I think is dumb in my location's case, given they wouldn't survive the winter except in hot springs where tropical fish would also survive. I kept some back when they were still legal here. Nice little fish.

Last year I started putting together a 60-gallon community tank of my childhood favorite fish. It has 6 of the following: silver hatchetfish, fancy guppies, Asian glass catfish, longfin zebra danios, reticulated hillstream loaches, and false julii corydoras catfish. There’s also a school of 15 or so neon tetras and a dozen ghost shrimp. The tank has plenty of hiding places, and both live and plastic plants. The zebras are boisterous, with each other and anyone else, but they don’t seem to be doing any damage to their tankmates. I love this tank, and spend a lot of time sitting in front of it.

After a few years in the hobby, I bought 6 zebra danios from a store that routinely medicates all incoming fish. Sadly, they didn't last even 6 months while the other fish in that 50 gallon tank were fine. I'm guessing I got some fish with weak genetics. It soured me on this species. Maybe later on I'll try again because they are great looking fish.

Easy enough to breed when eggs are separated. I tried to get rid of my 3 danios (last fish of a bigger group) so I could redo my whole tank for smaller fish. Gave them to another keeper and 2 days later the babies started appearing now I have 9 😂 the bigger group does act better so i might end up keeping them after all
