Spent a lot of time with a lot of teachers. Rupert is such a relief. No mystery. So clear, kind, gentle, yet firm and not allowing nonsense. Rupert is very much appreciated beyond the expression that words are able to convey. And, always a nice lesson in English grammar and diction. Not to mention, a crash course in manners and etiquette. He is a good boy.

I recall intensely suffering, and then I realized that my thoughts were causing the suffering. I felt anger realizing that for all these years I have allowed my mind to cause me to suffer. And I realized that my mind is pretty much always wrong about what it thinks. At that point I stopped paying attention to my mind and the suffering disappeared like a balloon bursting. Now I have this quiet peaceful place I can always return to if my mind tricks me again into suffering. And now I understand that this quiet peaceful place is actually my true nature, who I really am.

I found this excerpt as well, coming from another book : “No one is accountable for existing at all, or for being constituted as he is, or for living in the circumstances and surroundings in which he lives. The fatality of his nature cannot be disentangled from the fatality of all that which has been and will be. He is not the result of a special design, a will, a purpose; he is not the subject of an attempt to attain an 'ideal of man' or an 'ideal of happiness' or an 'ideal of morality'--it is absurd to want to hand over his nature to some purpose or other. We invented the concept 'purpose': in reality purpose is lacking... One is necessary, one is a piece of fate, one belongs to the whole, one is in the whole--there exists nothing which could judge, measure, compare, condemn our being, for that would be to judge, measure, condemn the whole...” ― Friedrich Nietzsche, from A Nietzsche Reader

I know what that man was trying to ask but I felt he couldn’t form the right question. I think he was trying to understand why infinite consciousness contracts itself to start with and become limited consciousness and suffer in order to become infinite again. It’s like putting yourself in jail and throwing key in the ocean and then trying everything to escape from that jail. I don’t think anybody can answer accurately the question why infinite consciousness became finite. The very close answer may be like Rupert said in order to experience itself as manifestation. And infinite consciousness has no knowledge of any finite consciousness qualities. So nothing exist in it. May be it just happening as random and spontaneous event. And meanings are assigned to it later. But I know lots of us think this is not really fair scheme ☺️.

this is heart of my question and biggest fear.. given that with super effort we became enlightened and become the infinite, will this infinite even contracts itself again for some other play ? I would rather not exist at all than becoming a slave of this self abuse... It's very depressing to say it's all a game; so our sufferings, war, abuse, poverty are all a game ? in fact if INFINITE has no knowledge of finite, then how is it INFINITE ?? it's like the age old paradox, if God cant do evil, then God is not all powerful. this existential thing is the one that gives me most fear....

@@of8ightandse7en16 I know it all sounds very absurd but what choice we really have than accepting that this is how it is. I think there is no way of knowing how exactly finite world manifested from infinite and what exactly happens after somebody merges back to it. I haven’t came across any satisfactory answers for these type of questions. And that’s obvious. If everything that we can know or know about is in the mind and reality prevails prior to mind then it’s not possible to know anything about it. We can only be it and cannot know it as an object. Yes in the beginning it feels all depressing and hopeless that’s why Sri Ramana Maharishi suggested path of surrender. And self inquiry. Once you realize who that ‘I ‘ really is then you r out of this game and life becomes effortless journey. That doesn’t mean you won’t have anymore problems but it’s just by then you will understand whose problems are they. Free will is just an illusion. Everything is from God through God for God. I know it’s hard to believe it’s all god when we look around. But that’s the paradox of life. It’s all because god has forgotten who he is and how powerful he can be. That’s why awakening. Who wakes up? And From what? Find out. Thank you for replying. Best wishes.

consciousness knows itself to be infinite and eternal, there is no concept of "risk" or "suffering" in this pure awareness, as by definition, nothing can exist outside of it's own perfection. Now this is getting more theoretical, but i believe, and have seen from my own experience, that on the deepest level, consciousness manifests because it is it's own nature and cannot operate outside of it. On another, more relative level, i think that it manifests because even though as it seemingly separates from itself, it knows that the suffering will be very great, but that the bliss of rediscovering what it truly is, is just as great, and that it chooses to manifest in it's own dance, without purpose, merely to have fun and celebrate it's own being.

When Mary (the dreamer/consciousness) dreams of Jane (the ficticious character en the dream)... Mary gives Jane its existence (without consciousness there wouldn't be a character, Jane's mind is actually Mary's mind) and Jane gives Mary its knowing (the character Mary allows Jane to be seen, it creates a perspective) Mary becomes Jane to be able to see itself from a partial perspective, an eye can see everything but itself, but nothing can be seen without the eye, the finite manifestation, Jane, the character acts as a sort of mirror, creating a limited reflection so that the eye can see itself

I hear you on "if we are suffering there is something to do", i.e., "seek happiness", ONLY, what if we "don't know how"? I've had a loss in my personal life that has since made me quite uncomfortable, un-happy, and fearful, for my self and family's sake; I do my best to seek alternative situations, business, and even connecting with true SELF and Universal Consciousness, but any happiness I get out of that is fleeting and doesn't make-up for the real material loss I experienced, that affects/effects me to this very day. I simply can' shake-off the loss, no matter how much I may want to, b/c it is so effective for, about, on me, etc., etc. I will say from personal experience just how profound "material loss" can be upon one. Most who speak philosophically about "Ultimate Consciousness" do so from a position of comfort, repose, and non-agitative material loss, lack or inadequacy. The simple solution on paper, at least in my case, is to find a materially beneficial make-up to what was lost, that now effects my livelihood so profoundly, and which I could regain my former "more care-free, happier self". The hard situation is that "I haven't found such", even though I'm trying my best, working-hard, "hopeful-believing" and open-minded to what "I can't give myself", and what the Universe might better point the way toward. All I have to finish saying is, "some material loss is so profound and hard/difficult to deal with", that unless you've experienced such, you might not have any idea "just how hard it is to recover one's equilibrium, vitality, zest for Life, and PEACE, of mind-spirit-body". God-Help us All if you fall into such a camp.

Let me take a crack at this... (I liked what Rupert had to say, by the way) Awareness represents infinite potential, because the creative power we call "mind" is an eternal aspect of awareness itself. And well, mind's function is to create... So the exploration of contracted states of consciousness is pretty much in the realm of an inevitability. Now, upon said contraction, there is little left to admit other than the state itself is ultimately, and wholly, unsatisfactory. It is a lesson that reaches across not only the human realm, but also across the divine realm as well. If you should find your consciousness in such a contracted state, there is little left to do other than admitting you now desire to rejoin with nature's fully expanded, and universal, consciousness. (or as they might say in the great nation of India, "you become a yogi")

Rupert, I have always heard you maintain that people come to your gatherings, because they are seeking happiness. I totally agree with that an unhappy person would seek, and therefore go to, spiritual gatherings, as one very good approach to mitigate the suffering. To that going to spiritual gatherings, though, I want to add my experiential angle: It is possible to seek the "happiness" in the context of the seeker being not necessarily "unhappy," but being happy and wanting to experience the sharing of presence with other happy spirits and marvel the interactions! That seeker would be exactly in the state that you described where the subject is rejoicing upon realization of self and just contributing in a celebration with the presence of joy, which you tried to explain to the miserable one and corrected him on "There's nothing to do!" Taking my clues from you and other non-dualists, I am that who has succeeded in my subjective examination and I have found my happiness. I truly know my essence now and really have no fundamental questions remaining about my existence. All that is left for me to "do" now is to keep remembering not to be lost in, or otherwise usurped by, the experience. To remember that I am the screen upon which the imagery is playing and the story is carrying on... So if I should one day find the resources to enable my humble presence in Rupertstan, it won't be because I am unhappy or miserable. Far from it! It would be because maximum greed is permitted in love and joy of true happiness, and therefore I would be coming to share with you and others, my Hafiz and his Wine :) 🍷🕉

How then does expansion or knowing of ones true self work within the framework of the contracted state of the body/mind?

The Buddha said, life is suffering. And from all spiritual teachers and experience, I glean that life is the pursuit of happiness. Are suffering and happiness part of the duality, one of the sets of opposites we face in our 3D existence? It has been said that the purpose of the mind is to lead us always toward the seeking of pleasure and the avoidance of pain. But if pleasure and pain are the same, and only differ in interpretation...? I have so many questions. I guess I just have to ponder them and hope answers come from my spiritual team in meditation.

Suffering is invented in the mind. Pain and joy are the polarities in the appearance of duality (reality). We could not know joy without sorrow. Suffering on the other had is the resistance, generated by the ego, to what is. Without joy and pain consciousness could not manifest this apparent duality. Suffering is the egos (mind generated sense of self) view of the pain. Suffering is thought based as is ego. The "purpose" of suffering is the same as the ego, to be transcended. The purpose of the appearance of duality is unknown outside of individuated, subjective opinion. One cannot awaken without experiencing the connection between suffering and ego. There is not, nor will there ever be more joy than pain perceived in the world. One who is awake does not experience pain as suffering. Both joy and pain are loves appearance in duality.

It seems like this "happiness" would be much easier to find if I knew about this when I was maybe 8 years old. But at 40 with a family and everyone around is all wrapped up in the same material seeking - suffering cycle. I dont see how this is possible while participating in society without upsetting many people. Karma yoga seems to be the answer to this but by the time it sinks in I'll be dead. Oh well maybe in the next life I can pick up where I left off.

The opposite of suffering is not exactly pleasure or good. Suffering is a conscious reaction to mental/emotional pain; Pain which is inevitable and part of life as in Pleasure/Pain. It’s the ultimate question really and comes out in a number of ways through humanity. In religion it’s, ‘why does god allow bad things to happen to good people’. But it’s a linear mind question seeking answers it’s not ok with & can’t make sense of, and trying find an answer to bring it resolution. I see it as egoic in nature. The mind wants its answers on its own terms, and wanting to know how things can possibly line up otherwise to its desires. When things don’t, it gets pissed off and objects, starting down the path to ‘right this wrong’ or as a concession, at least find out ‘why’. (and does so w/indignation). That’s kinda what it does though. It is like it’s patterned job. To go around, judging, sorting (good/bad, right/wring), correcting and objecting to the way things are. God forbid the world doesn’t line up to its plan of sorted boxes and what things should go where. David Hawkins speaks of this in another way. In short, the linear mind can never understand the nonlinear. Just as the finite can’t understand the infinite. Fast forward to this questioner, an angry and difficult guy (although the English polish it up so nicely, to make it not seem so) was pursuing a line of questioning that he can never find answers to. He will continue to be discontented (unhappy) until he realizes he’s caught in a never ending loop, meaning the fault lies in the pursuit itself. Ironically, he’s suffering from the question of suffering. Rupert knows exactly what’s he’s dealing with and does his very best to make the attempt anyway. Even putting up w/the man being snarky, at which one point he appropriately corrects him w/a quick mental smack on the hand, as to say ‘that’s enough of that’. It’s appropriate because the egoic pattern and perspective is childish in nature. It’s petty and small, not really caring about anything but itself. It masks its motives through mock altruism. It’s an interesting discussion w/much going on. In the end, the answer to this ultimate question of humanity, never quite satisfies but only temporarily appeases.

Yet He is willing to suffer it as each one of us, until we realize God is Who we really are, and begin to enjoy at least some of God's infinitely great joy, for just as infinitely great is the Love of Who our Being is, as Whom we gave our Life for the humans we seem to be. I do believe that the true answer is: As long as we identify ourselves with "body/mind" - we will never know the answer except perhaps to accept it as a law of manifestation in a state of apparent duality. Questions such as this could be extended to questions such as "why are we born?". As long as we identify ourselves with body/mind - a "sufferer", "enjoyer", "thinker", "doer", "birth" "death" are all extensions of that identification. However, once you clearly see that the TRUE "I" is/was/will always be that IMPERSONAL PRINCIPLE OF EXISTENCE/CONSCIOUSNESS WHICH IN ITS ESSENCE IS ETERNAL, INFINITE AND PEACEFUL (AND IT IS NONE OTHER THAN I), the emotional roller coaster of life is unlikely to affect you.

It seems to me that this is the question that was being asked, if not clearly. Rupert has answered this question in other videos; however, it was not answered in this one. The brief answer is that the one infinite consciousness descends (contracts) into physical form to experience itself. However as Lao-Tsu (or Laozi) said in the Tao Te Ching, the Tao (source/infinite consciousness) cannot be "named" (described).

Does the idea that contraction (force) is required for happiness, really sound appealing to you? When contraction is conditioned in the mind/body it seems difficult to let it go, but holding on to it is in the end an impossible challenge. Suffering is in fact very difficult to discover, ask a rock. It took millions of years of evolution before pain was experienced, another couple of million years before it turned into suffering. Suffering is very complex, the answer to it perhaps not.

Some people already asked the same, why the Infinite suffers itself as the finite to just be infinite again. Every explanation leads to dead end. Why would the Infinite have "desire" to manifest at all.. since the whole idea of realization is to be desireless and egoless.. In soul evolution view, somehow we choose to be here, in fact all it's reincarnation and events are predestined. This seemed to be the "answer" since all wise sayings always point the errors back to ourselves and never "God". it is always our ignorance and lack of wisdom and all that. But then, that's very scary. The "me" now or anyone of us would never even or imagined we wanted this. Who would want to be murdered, mutilated, raped, died of cancer and untold miseries.. Some said that thru this ignorance and miseries, we would find that joy of rediscovering who we actually are. Still, it goes back to the idea that the INFINITE is supposed to be all blissful and unlimited. why does it even have the NEED and MOTIVE to go thru that ? the bliss of the infinite should have "accomodated" the joy of rediscovery. otherwise, infinite isnt infinite then. A long rambling but conclusion is, it's better that it remain unanswered. I got into depression thinking and accepting my existence here.

Its not infinite if it doesnt include the possibility for suffering. The suffering happens when our self consciousness confuses the finite being for the infinite, sort of a short necessary confusion that needs to be passed through on the way back to divinity. The suffering itself is the search for god, but diverted into false objects.

I don’t think boredom is the only reason. I think the main reason is loneliness. Infinite consciousness/the universal mind longed for companionship more than anything else and by manifesting itself into individual, finite beings it solves the companionship issue but creates the potential for other forms of suffering. Of course people get lonely as well but those people are able to get pets, friends etc. I think deep down we all want companionship more than anything else. As above so below.

I would think this question is partly biological. Suffering and the ego is benificial in the feeling of not having enough and always be restless since this pushes progression and reproducing. Evolution doesn't care if you're happy or not, it just cares that you (the product) is constantly producing. Freeing yourself from the ego is partly about freeing yourself from the inherit plan of evolution (get born, mate, die). How we can realize that this is just a construct is because our brain is gifted with rationality that can expose this (enlightement).

Some people say that the purpose of life is to search for a purpose. So the confusion is integral part of it. Another way to look at it is: maybe life wants someone to witness its multiplicity. It so eagerly wants to show you the things it is so proud of. I mean don't you ever want to share something cool with someone? What if life is your companion that wants to share absolutely everything with you, and instead of actually paying attention to it you are so hasty just to pin a label to it so you can move on to something else i.e. you are not watching the movie, you want to jump to the ending scene and know the conclusion: what is life. What if you are supposed to forget yourself and just give into it, see and hear what life wants to show and tell you. What if life isn't about you - what if it's literally about *EVERYTHING* else.

As a Christian I find your insights into the spiritual world to be truly amazing. But I think you're missing a crucial point, and that is that we are three part beings. Body soul and spirit. Our spirit is not who we are. We are souls, mind will emotions. Our spirit is consciousness or life, but we souls were created by that consciousness to manifest what that consciousness is. This is our purpose in life. Question....do you know how to manifest that consciousness, without knowing what the will of that consciousness is? Our will and the will of that consciousness are not one and the same. Our will must be surrendered to the will of the universal consciousness or God
