Interesting video. I started smoking at the end of high school, a decent amount in college, then after college for a few years. I was never someone who could be high all day, just more of a social thing or when I wanted to relax. Then 5 or 6 years ago when I was around 24 or 25, I remember getting paranoia every time I smoked. Nothing crazy like people trying to kill me, just a general sense of anxiety and people mocking me or my insecurities coming out, but it was very intense. I never experienced that when I was younger, even though there were times I was high as hell. I am a very social person and confident, but weed made me the literal opposite; introverted, scared, etc. I started researching and found scientists believe many things, but the two prevailing theories are: 1) weed can induce schizophrenia (or episodes) when someone is genetically prone to it and 2) physiologically a part of your brain can be more sensitive to THC, thus triggering either the pleasure feeling or paranoid feeling. I can't remember which part of the brain whether it was front back right or left, but I know they experimented on rats and found that to be true. Anyway, I quit trying to like weed because I used to like it, and stopped altogether. I find so many people are stubborn and want to like something, so they keep doing it even though it causes them harm.
@marchiano59333 жыл бұрын
Good to hear that you quit man, strong move. I have a very similar story and quit aswell. First couple of years it was amazing; relaxing, lots of laughter, increased appetite, increased focus, it even made me think more deeply and profound. Then after a couple of years, same thing started to happen. Slowly damaging the relationships around me and when I finally recognized that that was a problem, I was very confused how it started.. since it went good for years.. (I was getting high grades at school, I had lots of friends, I had a side job with lots of responsibilities) Everything was really good when I was smoking for a couple of years. Also not a daily smoker like you said. More like weekends, parties, events, sometimes holidays. Then I just cold turkey quit, now been off it for like 3 years, smoked about 2 joints since, same feeling of paranoia came back. Maybe it's the amount of stress/responsibility we are now carrying that doesn't really go well with cannabis. Or our system just had enough from the substance.. idk. But I would still be curious to know how this evolved the way it did man. Anyway, I've evolved more than ever since I quit it and also have a vision now, whereas when I was smoking, I just totally lived in the moment or one day at a time. Hope to hear more about what you're thinking man, keep up the strong moves.

@shonuff46783 жыл бұрын
I’d say it made me more paranoid as I got older, but a lot of that was due to becoming an adult. There is a lot more things for an adult that cause anxiety and this can actually be heightened with marijuana. Specifically the fear of losing job, freedom, kids, etc. Since marijuana is illegal most places the paranoia becomes to much and takes away the good part about marijuana. Instead of laughing your praying you don’t get fired the next day due to a drug test. I’d say if society accepted it and it was 100% legal it would be different and people could relax. Until then I’m with you and haven’t touched it in several years.

I was diagnosed schizophrenic about 5 years ago. I have been hospitalized multiple times, jailed literally a dozen times between multiple states, even attempted suicide when I was at my absolute worst,.. I tried countless treatments and medications both voluntarily and forcefully. After living several years in what looking back on now feels like thinking back to an actual nightmare,.. I am now currently living a relatively normal life. I have found that while in a psychosis or psychotic episode cannabis generally speaking is bad,..terrible in fact, but mostly because there isn’t any regulation on it here.. so if you were to go get a bag of marijuana you typically don’t know what that particular strand is or what kind of reaction you could get from it... some strands are like a miracle drug, where as others could send you so far down the rabbit hole, that it could end up getting them into an almost blackout state of psychosis that is extremely dangerous to the individual and potentially those closest to them. However, when my mental illness is in a dormant state I have found there is nothing better to treat schizophrenia in myself than marijuana, and the strand definitely doesn’t matter as much. I don’t over due it, but one or two tokes off of a small pipe does an exceptional job of keeping me in an almost perfect balance mentally. I hope in the future there is a lot more study done on this connection and if there is or are any I would be all in on helping to further it. Schizophrenia is very serious and should not be taken lightly. I know how lucky I am to have the life I do today and I was only able to achieve this through acceptance of the fact I have the illness. To anyone out there battling with schizophrenia if you are reading this, take a deep breath and know that you are not alone, and I am 100% willing to lend any insight or advice that I can if you need someone to talk to. You are not crazy, you’re not less of a person, and there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but it requires a very strong effort from yourself,...and the sooner you realize it is ok to be different, and that it is ok to need a little help once in a while.. the better 💚x♾

I dont have schizophrenia, but I can relate to the anxiety from weed. You explained it perfectly

The level of thoughtfulness of your comment is impressive jake. Very glad to hear you're in a much better place now. It seems you understand yourself better and your level of acceptance and perseverance has done you well. I wish all the health and happiness to you. I smoked daily for 20 years or so, and until I stopped didnt realise I'd literally been walking around in a hazy daze for most of that time. I'm a musician so appreciate a bit of a creativity boost from time to time, but aside from the generic things alot of people describe in these comments havent experienced any dark times with it. I've recently come across wim hof and his breathing techniques, who says they can be very helpful to people with anxiety/depression etc. He lost his wife sadly to a dark episode she had and has put alot of years into bringing his knowledge and studies to the masses. If you've never heard of him or looked into it, might be of some use. All the best 💚🙏

This year my brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia. We’re both in our 20s and live in a house with our best friends. He developed it over a period of about 4 to 6 months. As he continued to be more and more delusional he just became a lot more scary and violent to be around. If you confront him in any way about anything he was saying which was usually a bunch of nonsense, but was very real to him. He also started using meth which just made him exceptionally more paranoid. At one point he called the police because he thought the house was surrounded by people that wanted to kill him. But he forgot he called the police and “when people with guns” knocked at the door he freaked out and when they came in he started crawling on the floor trying to get away from them. My brother is one of my favorite people in the entire universe, he used to be such an inspiration and joy to be around. At this point he is in a facility and finally on the medication he needs. But I feel guilty as a human being because I honestly don’t want to be around him after the things I’ve had to experience because of him. As he slowly developed schizophrenia he pushed everyone his life away except for me I was the only person who’s there for him who did everything he ever asked for but he still thought I was against him

Im sorry to hear that, I dont think amphetamine use directly contributed to his illness, more the lack of sleep and loss of appetite caused by over use of amphetamine. I also think this is recoverable allthough not in a hospital situation as he is now permanently diagnosed, forcefully medicated and locked up involuntarily without committing a crime. I dont know the solution but i do know that his human rights are being violated. I wen through a rough patch similar to what you described, i needed a "time out' Luckily i escaped, recovered and have been ok for nearly 20 years. i had alot of stress at the time with a dying son who survived and is ok now along with marijuana withdrawal symptoms that for me manifests as loss of appetite, insomnia and night sweats leading to the mental issues. I just needed some rest and care but was almost diagnosed permanently, my life was almost ruined by the mental health system and by my loved ones who cared a bit too much, now we realize the truth of the system. Im not saying his case is the same, just giving you something to think about. I hope he gets well but will never be the same if involved with the mental health system. I was lucky to escape the loony bin , recover then pay 500 bucks for a re-diagnosis or normality (whatever that is) and to be discharged and have the police stop looking for me but i have not ever heard of another escaping the system. I dont know what the solution is for your brother, maybe a restraining order? I dont think the solution is the abuse of his human rights though unless he is a criminal. This is not "minority report" I hope he gets better without too much damage by the system. i dont know what is worse, the illness or the treatment?? All the best, please dont take offense, i just wanted to give another perspective on this issue. I dont have the answers either, i only know what is not :(

Exactly. i wasnt much of a sleeper even before those things and can tell those tendencies years later are beginning to creep up but with full awareness it isnt real, but its like a jump scare in a movie. unpleasant but that's generally how i saw it too, because it was lsd then lsd and cocaine then lsd then speed. so i saw quite a bit of schizophrenic and delusion filled [people who could afford to be drug addicts i generally couldnt but its awful. all of them were jay walkers weirdly enough. all shoplifted things which werent worth more than a pencil case... i mean im struggling but i'm here, i cant imagine what it'd be like to be screwed up know it and know you can do something about it but dont want to. how the hallucinations hit some of those people socially....is frightening. think a low functioning psychosis and meth releases more than sex or cocaine (dopamine wise) with serotonin on top and hopefully not the full syndrome. so you combine sleep deprivation with that your in trouble. when i was 15 and obviously sober i knew anything day three forward meant you could predictably guess the hallucinations that would come but theyd still shock you. even if you knew they werent real. a good example is shooting up in the bathroom schizophrenia and hallucination wise. because before you shoot say a amphetamine it could be a clean toilet/bathroom and then afterwards you could imagine mess and then it feels like the right thing to do to clean it, thats where i suspect the whole cleaning thing and interest in fixing things comes from. complete delusion and its generally stimulants in high doses, faster delivery methods or without any sleep. acid is a hallucinogen i wouldnt say thats schizophrenia its vastly different what you see and hear in those instances. like i can sit here right now sober and totally remember that.

Struggled to keep any friends for any length of time, isolated herself especially as she got older. At 21 my mom would hear her having conversations with herself from the other room. Within a few months this turned into awful suicide attempts, multiple stays in mental hospitals. Luckily enough, a few months later she seems to be on the mend with medication. She still doesn’t open up about what she was hearing or what was bothering her much though, terribly sad.

His mind generates confusion with a multitude of variable thoughts all at the same time, he then has to choose which thoughts are the best to act on at every moment of his existence. A hug was determined to be the best way to bridge the channel toward communication so now when he recognizes a person he needs a hug from them first so he can concentrate on a conversation with them. A strapping example of a vital young man now, his infectious smile gives him all the hugs he could ever want and my hat is off to his mother for making him the way he is today.

A bad trip with LSD launched years of recurring psychosis. I lost my grip on reality. You have no idea how precious that is until you realize it could disappear. I would slip in and out at random times. I had to stop smoking weed because it would cause an immediate relapse. I don't know how to explain it other than: my stream of consciousness stays the same--I am still me and think my own thoughts--but gets trapped in my own mind unable to access the "real world". There is no sense of proprioception and my connection to reality disappears. Oddly I could hear other people fine--it was always visual. Up was down, left was down, right was forward, my internal organs are in another state and the person's face talking to me is melting through the space my skull should have been. It would happen randomly and would only really last for maybe two to six seconds. Long enough I earned a bad, but deserved, reputation amongst my coworkers for spacing out. It is so terrifying because even though each time would only last a few seconds, I would wonder if the next time would be permanent and I wouldn't be able to find a way back. I would have difficulty speaking for a while after those slips--usually up to half an hour or so. I could think what I wanted to say but there was a disconnection between my brain and my mouth. I would get lost in the complexity of human grammar and be unable to formulate a coherent thought. It was so fucking embarassing. I could hear other people speak clear as day but my ability to get my own consciousness out and express it had left the building. Maybe the best visual representation is that moment in Get Out when he goes to the sunken place, but make the sunken place a kaleidoscope of random colors and smeared images that warp and twist without any respect to a normal XYZ dimension. I was dead sober too--it would happen ten to twelve times a day at the worst. I stopped smoking weed like a week after the bad trip because if I smoked weed I would go to that bad place and stay there until I wasn't high anymore. It definitely exacerbated it. Going stone cold sober, investing into nootropics, and working on my mental health is what allowed me to get rid of it. It took me about three or four years to get completely back to my "normal". I had horrible, clinical OCD as a child as well--I washed my hands until they openly bled and had a bad counting tic--so I have a history of mental illness. I have no fucking clue why I thought my fucking brain could handle LSD. I don't know if this is how psychosis manifests in everyone, but I feel nothing but sympathy towards people who are stuck in that state their whole lives. Literally the most terrifying thing I have ever experienced. Drugs are not friendly to everyone and I think there needs to be more awareness around the mental dangers it can pose to people who are susceptible.

I developed a schizophrenic type of psychosis that lasted for two years after taking a heroic dose of shrooms. I had a 12 hour trip which I questioned myself and everything into non-existent. I came out of it completely unconvinced that anything really existed. Everything I knew was a lie. Many many things went wrong that night and it literally cost me every relationship in my life. Man my childhood best friend from age 7 to 25 got Schizophrenia. I watched it unfold and it broke my heart. He was always very introverted as a kid and we all thought as an adult he would open up. We all smoked weed, played videogames, and joked around. Then one day he flipped and said some imaginary people above his apartment were inside of his head. I tried for years to "talk" or "coach" him out of it but it didn't work. Ever since then, I stopped smoking weed and had to abandon our friendship because he is now in an institution of some sort. I don't think he was trying to induce schizophrenia, just a schizophrenia-like experience temporarily. It's not known how well high amphetamine doses mimic schizophrenia, but use of these drugs to induce psychosis is a big part in why schizophrenia medication was developed specifically to block dopamine - they created something close enough for lack of a better term to the disorder, at least enough to create treatments that work quite well.

I would def say that yes it is linked. A half-sibling of mine was subjected to drug use when they were 13yrs old from their bio dad. Terrible things happened to them within just a short amount of time visiting the father, horrific things I won’t speak of. Said sibling became an addict & struggled with addiction til they were nearly 35yrs old. During that huge time period, they had been diagnosed with bipolar, which we thought was a misdiagnosis since they would hallucinate for days at a time. They had an episode about a year and a half ago, but they’ve been clean for years & was finally diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Year & years of being in mental institutions & in & out of jail never helped them of course, but they’re finally doing awesome AS LONG AS they get REST! My brother has schizophrenia and it’s the worst experience ever. I think my brother got it due to drug abuse in his life. The way it started for him was one day he was doing his normal routine of smoking dabs of weed and the episodes started happening. He never told us but I diagnose him by one night he came inside my room yelling at me saying my neighbors and I are planning to kill him. I tried pleading with him that no one wants to kill him and he wasn’t believing me so he attacked me. That’s the moment I found out he had a serious problem. Had to take him to the psych ward at the hospital and it was very hard to convince him to go. It took me calling the police one day and having a officer talk to him about him being sick and needs to get treated. Few month later my brother is still messed up a bit but looks like the doctor found a medicine that is giving some positive results so that’s good. My brother isn’t the same guy he used to be and Im not sure if he will ever go back to his old self. This is a very horrible experience to have with a love one especially someone living with you. It’s interesting what they said about schizophrenia I have always had a problem with authority and it eventually led to drug addiction because as a kid I felt my voice wasn’t heard and it drove me crazy. I had depression since I was like 10 and very serious anger issues which I’ve now controlled having learnt a lot of stuff about psychology and cannabis actually helped me calm down and be more sort of flexible and working out gave me the confidence to stand on my own and become more social. So I mean I think adictive personality is a trait of many mental health sufferers and doesn’t necessarily correlate with drug use but can lead to it. It’s like seeking escape from your own mind

I learned this in a psychology class: Drugs cannot directly cause schizophrenia. Many people believe that schizophrenia is genetically inherrited. If, for example, one of your parents has schizophrenia the likelihood of you having schizophrenia is higher than if one of your distant cousins has this illness. It is more or less the potential to suffer this illness that is inherrited. This potential can be triggered by drugs.

As a Schizophrenic, I could answer these so well. On the part about your social models. It's more like autism but like with autism you can teach yourself remodel in a way. I've done tons of drugs and they're similar so basically, your imagination is your worst enemy and depending on your mindset or how strongly willed you are you can be like anyone else just like say a shroom trip. Its basically the same its just worse because generally if you're diagnosed you're gonna have anxiety, depression, and other problems so its gonna make you have a "bad" trip but if you're happy and chilling like i am almost always there's no difference. Life's the same.

The problem is some people I've heard speak on it say they didn't know they were likely to be schizophrenic and wish they would've never smoked weed as it changed their lives forever. So for them, even if they were gonna have to deal with it, it would've been better to avoid it and hopefully they would've lived a happier life for a bit longer. For them it was all of a sudden. They didn't expect that. So they wish they knew.
@Manbear76783 жыл бұрын
You mean meth? Weed doesn't cause that, but I've worked in the psych wing long enough to KNOW there is a direct correlation between meth use and schizophrenia. Weed should calm down anxieties, not increase them. I’ve never been formally diagnosed with schizophrenia but I’ve done a self analysis on myself and not only that, but my mother has previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia. I’ve spent long periods of time isolated, thinking, researching and exploring myself and my psyche and in my opinion, I’ve discovered a lot about myself and the mental disorder that we call schizophrenia. I would love to be a part of a study but haven’t ever really looked into it. I believe my thoughts could possibly have a positive impact on how we look at and understand this mental disorder.

I have paranoid schizophrenia, I used to use drugs frequently, even more Marijuana. When I used Marijuana was cool but always had a paranoia running in background. Today I can't use Marijuana, it makes me feel like I have a demon on my mind. Actualy I can't use any drugs, except ecstasy and alcohol. I was a happy boy, intelligent, contemplative. Today im the opposite, my life is very hard, I dont trust in anybody, not even in my closest friends and family. I hope some day it will end. Sorry for the english

Constant ingestion of high amounts of thc could possibly induce schizo like mind states. I had a period of psychosis from smoking lots of weed for a few years and towards the end developed some anxiety. We're growing weed to produce too much thc and not enough cbd, and that's a dangerous game that seems harmless on the surface
@Rumination.3 жыл бұрын
@Jake it's not the fault of the drug, but weed naturally grows with a balanced thc to cbd ratio. Since we can tweak the environment that it grows in now to such a high degree, we can alter the levels of thc in the plant UNNATURALLY. There's a reason weed grows naturally a certain way, but man decided to amplify the part of cannabis that's responsible for euphoria and sedation. So much so that now people extract the thc from weed and ingest it at levels around 95% in potency. You can see where this is headed, and it's becoming a real problem
@Rumination.3 жыл бұрын
@Jake You're right, it is that way to repel insects. It just so happens that it also causes euphoria and sedation when smoked or eaten after heated and bonded with a fat or oil. It's all natural functions. What isn't natural is controlling the light conditions, temperature, humidity, airflow, and the nutrients all to an exact degree in order to reap the most thc possible in the plant. Especially when to be used recreationally. There's not reason to have that much thc except to get completely stoned. It doesn't increase medicinal properties. Bro my point is that weed is fine the way it is, and the only reason people (hippies is a good way to put it) grow it in a way to produce as much thc as possible is to be stoned off their ass and nothing more, and that it can do more harm than good.
@Rumination.3 жыл бұрын
@Jake Bro I'm not trying to say that more cbd will magically make it all okay, I'm saying that the high amounts of thc present in weed today is harmful mentally. Weed has over 100 cannabinoids, but thc is the point of interest because it gets you high. So people thought that more of that is good. So good quality weed is just a secondary result to growing it in a controlled environment, the primary goal being to get as much thc as possible out of it. Yes you smoke less but for how long? Tolerance builds quickly and so people resort to concentrates which are arguably less harmful to your lungs, but the amounts of thc you ingest are far from normal. You can grow good quality weed without the crazy amounts of thc.
@Rumination.3 жыл бұрын
@Jake My argument is that weak bud is better because you don't ingest as much thc. You think people don't still smoke countless blunts or joints? You can keep making weed stronger, most people will still chain smoke 3 gram blunts, that doesn't matter. What does matter is the amount of thc going into your brain bro. If you reset your tolerance, a low thc weed will actually get you high, but since everyone is dependent on strong weed now, people need 30% thc strains because their tolerance won't let them feel anything more than a buzz. Simply put, strong (different from good quality) weed is bad for you mentally in the long run.

@@dillondebeer6690 amphetamines are dopamine agonists (meaning they mimic dopamine in the brain) and one early model of schizophrenia is dopamine hyperfunction (too much dopamine acting). It all depends on the individual's state of health both physically and mentally prior to drug use. If the person is pre-disposed to mental issues then I think the drug use will further exasperate the problems and no doubts that drug use will have negative affects even on a physically healthy and mentally sound person over long periods of time! The same goes for alcohol, cigarrettes, prescription drugs etc etc

Once befriended a very kind and strong homeless man while working graveyard shifts. He was unfortunately suffering great trauma and severe schizophrenia, often telling strange stories of violence and drug busts. However, he also had a very special way of looking at the world, that there was 'dust' in the air that signaled the atmosphere of an area. He read the dust and knew what state our store was in at any moment, and his observations always proved correct. He would advise me in sagely ways as I deciphered his language. Often times I found that MY model was wrong, and that he had figured it out in a much more efficient way. There were lines in the circuits leading up to our large neon signs that only he could see. He knew.
