Ah, the good old Police-Fire Rivalry... But does it exist in real life? In this video, I talk about how amazing it is working alongside the Fire Bridge and the Ambulance Service. I discuss how the Rivalries perceived in the media are simply just not the case in real life.

I had a really bad RTC when I was younger, all 3 services attended the scene whereby I was trapped in my car, in a ditch for 3 hours. All the emergency services were absolutely amazing. Fire service with their efficiency in securing the vehicle and cutting me out. Paramedic didn't even think twice about climbing into the wreckage to be with me and start treatments to keep me stable, police secured the scene and took a statement from me once I was stable. Say what you want about emergency services. But they're absolutely phenomenal people. 🙌

I met a girl at university who's father who died while fighting a fire. He saved a girl's life while at the house. She was talking about him, and she said I'm not sure in reference to the line in Sin City. But it reminded me of it. "My dad died. A child lives. A fair trade"

Great video Ben. My Grandad was a firefighter in the London fire Brigade and some of the stories I've heard from other family members about some of the things he used to face when he was on duty were amazing and scary at the same time. Sadly he passed away 30 years ago so I didn't get to ask him personally about what he did. All of the emergency service crews have my total respect and are amazing.

Firefighters are lucky with the kit we have these days. However when your grandfather was serving I suspect that instead of a large ladder he may have used two small wooden ladders with hooks on the end to scale tall buildings! See kzbin.info/www/bejne/sH69fqmVpZyWqrs Also, there is still kit on fire engines today that he would have used like beaters to put out fires and brass stirrup pumps! I was a firefighter, but I'm no hero. It was just a privilege to do it and most of the time good fun.

Totally agree with Ben, as someone who works in a Police Control Room which is actually shared with a Fire Service, it's always great to see the inter-working between the three services and I also get really angry when Fire or Amb staff get targeted with violence. Like Ben said, I understand the anger/violence towards Police to an extent but Fire/Amb either rush into burning buildings or go to car crashes and Amb just want to save lives so any violence or whatever towards them is totally unacceptable!

I am also going to agree with the statements of this video and comments :) I drive ambulance in Denmark, and I have tried a few times to be "blocked" by the Police, because they estimated that a situation was too dangerous for us to do our job. I was told once; "You're not going to save ANY people if you die. Stay here!". And because this happens so rarely, I will listen when it's said. But, the rest of the time, I'm in charge of the general progression of the situation, but I know 110% that the firefighters are the best at what they do, and the Police are the best at what they do, and I'm the best at what I do. That's why we all do our job, keeping people safe, the best way we know how. That's why we are all "the services", because we are a team... I will always confur with the others to ensure the best outcome possible of a situation. Buuuut I have also tried a few times to deeply disagree with a police officer, but I had the final order in the progression. And even as I told him/her to do something he/she disagreed with, they would do it to their best abilities. Mad respect to police and firefighters !

I was a firefighter for a number of years. I never considered it brave to go into a burning building. It was good fun, as we had training in how to control a fire and our kit which we wore stopped any fire getting to us. The smaller black hose Ben talks about is called the high pressure hose. We never really spoke to the police as we normally got to the jobs either just before or after the paramedics. The police tended to arrive later, if needed.

There is a harmless rivalry between Dublin Fire Brigade and the National Ambulance Service due to Dublin Fire Brigade running an ambulance service and all DFB firefighters are trained paramedics. It's a fun game to guess which ambulance Service will attend your call, also awkward at RTCs as DFB run the fire and medical aspects of it leaving any NAS units feeling a bit undervalued, but they work great together of course and value each other dearly. (Cough cough DFB are better) 😂

I lived in a street with firefighters and police living in most of the houses. They were friendly with each other, but socially the firefighters stuck together and the police stuck together. After reading Handcuffed Emotions, it is interesting, the firefighters had a very black sense of humour, as a way to cope with the situations they faced, especially the deaths. But this was in the early 80s, maybe that has changed a bit. One of them was transferred to us (West Sussex) from Hull and he said it was a completely different experience. In Hull, people would set fires and call the Fire Brigade, in order to pelt them with stones, once they turned up. In Sussex, they were respected and a part of the community. The same with the police. A friend of mine's father was sent up to the picket lines for the coal miners strike. A lot of them came back shell-shocked, I'm guessing many of them would be treated for PTSD these days, but they were put on desk duty or invalided out of the service. For the father, it was a real shock, he was a School's Liaison Office for many years, before suddenly being stuffed into riot gear and being pelted by stones and worse. But even for the Bobby on the Beat in a quiet town, where the only violence they got to see was a drunken brawl on a Saturday night, it must have been a culture shock.

Aah The water babies / watter splatters. I was an ambulance man in 90’s . Fire service weren’t liked by police and ambulance service who did get on well, for a fac in my county due to their strutting “ look at me/ chest out “ posing and arrogant manner . They had all the kit and loved to remind you , the best wages but actually worked by far the least , paid to sleep ! , at the time hot meals cooked for them etc . Didn’t do themselves ANY favours. Actually knew 2 quite senior fireman pretty well and they didn’t like the dinosaur culture , which has been exposed as misogynistic + racist several times publicly , but knew they were into a good thing with promotion! Ie earliest retirement with the best pension. So no , my experience sadly different to Ben’s ,BUT was a good while ago and maybe with the “ fire dinosaurs “ retiring things have changed. Closing stations down after the failed strike actions may have had some humbling of course: the public support could have been a lot better and I was sure it wasn’t going to turn out well for them..The old Maxim is true “ if your onto a good thing keep your mouth shut and head down “!!

Firefighters have earned a high degree of respect due to the professionalism and heroics they show whilst on duty. Police on the other hand have a reputation in the gutter which they have have also earned through institutional abuse of power/rights/bullying , earning the hate every day, just look at all the incidents popping up in the news lately, Charing Cross is a reflection of the MET as a whole. It’s an insult to compare the police to firefighters/nhs/armed forces

Have to disagree, there are rotten apples in every walk of life, I saw a programme about a doctor stealing from the NHS the other day, doesn't make me think all doctors are thieves!! You seem to have an issue with the police, it may be justified or it may not. I personally have had great dealings with the police and a couple of times I was not to impressed, one of the times meant I filed a complaint and had a phone call with a senior police officer for 15 minutes and then a more in depth conversation with a Sargent in my home for an hour. We talked through my issues and it was resolved and my complaint withdrawn. I think the wording of your comments are not a fair reflection on most serving police officers but I would accept there are a very small minority that would. Just my opinion.Thanks.

@@martinosborne2842 hi mate we have our opinions and I respect yours. I’m not talking about bad apples though because as you rightly point out they are in all walks of life, but when the MET and other forces are continually found to be ‘institutionally’ corrupt or racist or abuse of power or discriminatory, then it’s not the odd bad apple. I personally am 39 and have never been charged or convicted of anything, I was arrested once when 18 and being drunk so I personally don’t any issues, I’m reacting to the non stop report of police breaking laws, abuse of power, corruption and so on which is ‘institutional’. You only have to see some of these ‘auditors’ videos when they question the police about why they are doing things which are abuse of power, abuse of section 43, abuse of police and criminal reform act etc, the coppers don’t even realize the are abusing power because it’s the norm, it’s what they have been taught, it’s institutional! I think my view is fair and justified. But each to there own ,

Ben Pearson: Is there a rivalry between Police and Sleepy-Hose-Pole-Boys?

The rivalry between the police and firefighters in the US is based on some high profile incidents about which Department controls a scene while all hell is breaking loose. After attending Police vs Firefighters hockey games at Madison Square Garden, and knowing members of both Departments personally, I think you're getting too much from movies or tv Ben. Hearsay is not admissible.
