47:04 - Looks like a surveyor's plumb bob. They haven't changed much over the centuries and have always needed to be pointed to align with exact spots on the ground. The Romans were brilliant surveyors. I think one of these Time Team episodes even demonstrates Roman surveying technique.

@@michael7324 lol no they dont Phil is working on the Waterloo Dig at Hugemont Farm for the last 10yr, the others work for the British Historic Trust, Mick Ashton was a Professor of Archaeology, they are all academics so no they dont have alot of time on their hands hence 3day exploration digs. If the digs warrant extra time local volunteer archeologist or enthusiasts continue with the work.

13:13 me being a nurseryman... spades are primarily cutting tools. Etymology. From Latin spatha ("a type of sword"), from from Ancient Greek ( ) spathe , "broad blade " / used properly, in a cutting motion from either left to right or vice versa it is an excellent design, sorry Phil shovels and spades are used differently. Spade and Shovel are used interchangeable and have been for decades if not centuries. Words can have more than one meaning and those meanings don't always have to align with their etymology. If Phil asks for a spade you know what he's wanting, and it's not what he had in his hand at that moment.

Could it have been an encampment? The Roman military was a surprisingly cautious animal & when invading wild lands had a tendency to establish some tents & a few patrols at the first stop while the scouts went looking for a better site to build the fort. Kind of like a beach head in modern warfare.

The picture this paints for me is an over night camp for an army on the march, possibly centered on an existing farm and with the ditches facing the most likely line of attack. When the Roman army moved on the farm lived on and saw use during the Roman occupation. Over time the ditches got filled in with various bits which included the lightly used coin from the invasion era and everything that came after.

The reason for the three day limit has to do with most of the team also working at universities. They dig on the weekends and then return to teaching the rest of the week. It isn't some sort of arbitrary deadline, it's one required out of necessity.

It's not forced drama, it's scheduling conflicts between the archaeologist's university gigs and production constraints getting episodes out weekly. If you want forced drama look at American TV.

I think the magnetics.... could / should run inside the trenches to get the trench depth more. It might be just enough to identify a layer just out of their range. What could it hurt to test. Overlay existing data and see if it changes.

I was a helicopter mechanic and having in Vietnam and spent at least 2,000 hours in the air in helicopters. I am always worried when they go up. I've watched all the time team episodes so I know there wasn't that bad a helicopter episode. You don't see much of the helicopter in this episode but it is a Bell Jet Ranger with floats that can be inflated in case of an emergency landing on water. It probably makes passengers feel safer. However, I also worked offshore oil rigs as a helicopter mechanic. In most cases, a helicopter will not stay upright on those floats. They land on the water and then turn over with the floats up and the rest of the helicopter under the water. I find that very scary. It usually costs lives when one lands on the water. No one on Time Team ever seems concerned when they go up in a helicopter. I'm always concerned when I go up in a helicopter. The number of accidents per flight time is fairly low but, on average, helicopter accidents are much more dangerous than fixed-wing accidents. 🤯

there is some flaws about the information they give here.. they were digging out a fort a few ep. ago were the town got flodded by the ocean near the fort and it still is flooded, and in this ep. they say the coastline was much closer back then.. dont that mean the socalled town close to the fort in the previous ep. would be in reach and not under water?

They are digging there own but when they are digging down they are looking for Roman fill aka Roman trash i.e. pottery. They are also able to see if the dirt is different then the rest of the area, any burning or clay etc.
