This show has me ADDICTED! I love the enthusiasm, the well done research, the respect for the finds and the area. I also love that there’s no “drama” added in with campy “accidents” and stuff. It’s real, and it’s so much fun to watch!

Roman Historian Guy de la Bédoyère actually raises a very important question at the end of the program. How long will today's records survive? Aside from rock carving, parchment stored correctly is a brilliant medium which lasts for an extremely long time. Compared that to today's mediums. Practically no information stored electronically today will ever come near. Neither does paper, and I have tested reputable printer companies' inks, bot with natural light and strong UV light, and they fade. It leaves a lot of question on how much of our lives today will be recorded for posterity.
@omikronweapon
@omikronweapon 2 жыл бұрын
that does assume that something quite catastrophic happens. Unless that occurs, there's unlikely to be a point in time where mankind simply decides to toss away all our records until now. Most likely we'll transfer all (most) information to newer techniques. And who knows what storage mediums we will create in the future. I also wonder about future archeology techniques there will be. Perhaps straight up time travel, or some way to extensively track atoms or energy back through thousands of years. Maybe we'll simply be able to reconstruct entire scenes out of thin air. Whatever WE imagine will happen in the future, could fall far short of what will actually be possible.

I'm surprised once geopolitics didn't find anything you didn't look for crop marks in a helicopter. After that you need to remember that during the ww2 all the available land would have been used to grow food and any trace of buildings would have been destroyed. Also you have to remember past digs just only hit very small evidence of Roman remains.

Archaeologists - Get Site History, Maps, Artifacts, Fossils, and a written record from a short range of Find Times in History. Archaeologist calls other Archaeologists and they all do a "Snoopy Dance" + agree to dig. *Day 1 or Week 1:* "they all disagree on where to dig. But they get their Spot and begin. They find period artifacts and they are re-charged. *Day 2 or Month 2:* 8 of 9 haven't met their expectations, but there's 1 that's certain he's on target. They all get Paranoid and *"the Doubting of The Data and Story begins."* The earlier Peoples surely exaggerated, their minds being lesser evolved and they had such beliefs and imaginations back then, ya know. *I mean Modern Mainstream Archaeologists are the Individuals that hold a 19th Century Theory as their fact foundation, established a Paradigm around it with a linear Timeline and force everything to fit into it ("like trying to put Cinderella's Shoe on Drucella's Foot")* + they defend their Theory like it's a Religion and await that "Missing Link" like. (Well we won't go there) "The Darwinian Dogma" *Day 3 or Month 3:* Finds emerge that validate the previous diggers and the site goes on to gain a thorough review and it matches their predecessors, and the move on to the next project, and the routine repeats again, etc. 😶

Pollyanna, I personally believe that with the footprint the Romans left on Britain it is impossible that there aren't any present day descendants all around England. The same goes for Ireland with the Vikings Dublin was for all intensive purposes taken over by the Vikings who for many generations shaped the now future of what Dublin is.

Think about that for one moment. Did the so-called Romans (whose citizenry and soldiers might hail from any part of a vast, ethically mixed Empire) ever reproduce? Well, duh. Yes, of course. And did they ever interbreed with non-Romans, conquered people’s, barbarians etc? Well, again, duh. Of course. So. Do traces of “Romano” DNA survive? For a third time..duh. Clearly. Or were you hoping for a newborn dressed like a member of the Ermine Guard to pop out of some unsuspecting Italian woman? Think, think, think before you ask silly questions and end up with garum on your face.

Sounds like a dose of wishful thinking is going on here. As for the underground village. All the reusable building materials were scavenged and reused, the footings or foundations were too much work for too little profit to dig up. Why quarry more stone when there is already quarried stone just lying around to be taken.

Why do the only have 3 days to excavate? It seems like a shame that they don’t finish. Is it just for entertainment?

It's to do with money. The more days the more money it will cost. Plus all the people involved have jobs to go to during the week

Having taken only one archeology class in college, I’d say no archeologist worth their salt would have been involved with this kind of dig. But I guess tv programming overrides any kind of actual fact finding.
