comparative religion classes helped me realize I was atheist

Why not just teach the psychology of religions, group dynamics and peer pressure - that would make for much healthier children.

So glad I grew up in secular USA with no required RE in my schools. No need for it!

because small minded and ignorant parents still exist (that and sometimes faith schools get more funding through various sources)

The most important skill is critical thinking. How are the kids educated in this essential issue - in the context of religion and multiculturalism?

Do they teach about the growing 'no beliefs'

I don't see anything wrong with teaching children about religion, just as long as religious diversity is taught. Religion has a heavy influence on culture. Differing cultures are a large aspect of the human condition. I grew up strongly believing in the Anglican faith. A partial reason for joining the forces was my belief in doing good to please a higher power. But I've realized that I've never talked with God and have seen the destruction religious indifference creates. I'm now Agnostic.

Why do faith schools still exist? Because churches are businesses and they own the school premises. For the same reason that Tescos or Walmart can demand you put x preservative in the product you make for them, faiths can demand y instruction as part of the rent for the school buildings It's a side effect of viewing education as a commodity.

There are thousands of religions. Which religions get taught and which get left out? Who gets to decide? The government?

Only as a part of mythology, history, where creation stories belong. Teach reading, understanding, writing, math, economics, physics. Things that you need in a work environment. Not filling children's heads with things like not going to heaven if you don't do as we say. Don't give religion the same credit as math. It simply doesn't deserve it.

I think religion should be taught in schools in the same way they teach about another country. Teach that there are people of whatever who believe in x,y, and z in whatever religious texts. Show children how they put on certain religious headwear. Read to the children and two or more opposing and agreeable views from others of the same faith. But I think children should do their worship at home and keep it out of schools. I also think that the dialogue about religion in schools shouldn’t include opposing or agreeable views about your or other religions that are taught. Because that could open a whole can of worms, that should be left at home. But instead are encouraged to ask questions. The point should be learning about it so they can make an informed decision. I also think people who have secular views should be taught about in schools.

How can the girl with a mother from Thailand have been a Buddhist since she was born?

I was born an Atheist and so was everyone else. I know this to be true because there has never been a confirmed instance of anyone exiting the womb exclaiming "praise Jesus","praise God","branch hashem" or" Allahu akba"

In Quebec, Canada, we have introduction classes in all (just the major, no spaghetti monster) belief systems and I say it is BS . This class doesn't allow for criticism and confrontation ... tantamout to teaching myths as truths and facts . This is WRONG . Religions have to be challenged, respect isn't called for in the matters of faith .

I will support religious education for 'Christian' and Muslim' kids as long as they introduce political education for 'Conservative' and 'Liberal' kids. And as long as they keep them all far away from my kids.

Ben Travers It's been forced on us it's compulsory for us to do it at GCSE at the Christian school I go tomorrow it's ridiculous and a waste of time. We have to learn pre constructed (and flawed) arguments and if you point out the flaws in it it you are told it'll offended someone (that doesn't proove me wrong). The fact your only told a few quotes from religion shows how cherry picked they are. The school is only Christian for the funding. Maby if the goverment did a better job with school funding they wouldn't need to be.
