Is there space for LGBTQ+ in Uganda? | ON THE SPOT

The Ugandan parliament has recently passed one of the world's most severe anti-homosexuality laws, which is now waiting for presidential assent. The new law criminalizes the LGBTIQ community and has sparked protests from activists who argue that it deprives them of their fundamental right to life and criminalizes their ability to express love. In contrast, supporters of the law believe it will restore moral control over Ugandan communities and eliminate "foreign" ideas. On The Spot, we discussed the pros and cons of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill with Andrew Mwenda, a veteran journalist who challenged a previous anti-gay bill in 2014, and Medard Lubega Sseggona, a lawyer and legislator for Busiro South.

The only valid point that Andrew Mwenda has made is that because we are having this conversation, or debate, it has planted curiosity in the minds of its viewers. And curiosity killed the cat. It now makes sense when paul in the scriptures said, I have made it my goal to focus is Christ and him crucified and nothing else. It makes sense why the knowledge of good and evil was a bad idea to begin with. Unfortunately in this world we live in, these are things we see everyday, always in our faces, and that is why it has to be called out as evil and condemned.

@ROSEBEL36
@ROSEBEL36 Жыл бұрын
Yes curiosity has two sides, a negative and a positive, but you can’t control which direction one will take or how it will affect that person. The more curiosity, the more knowledge you want to attain about the issue, the more knowledge you get you either get solid on your stand against it or your heart softens towards it, meaning you become more tolerant. When someone becomes tolerant about something, it won’t be long before they start accepting it and being okay with it and living with it.

@@MrKasiko2 There is no research that shows someone is born gay, it's just their emotions and feelings, one wakes and is like I feel I am a woman,goes to shop for dresses. It's an insult to women, women go through alot mentally, physically, emotionally tht non of these Trans women will understand other than just feeling good in their dresses and skirt
@MrKasiko2
@MrKasiko2 Жыл бұрын
Actually the biggest research done so far points to a complex mixture of nurture and nature... although scientists are not well versed with what genes play a role. They suggest that many genes affect the sexuality of an individual. However, my beef with all this, after examining how the western world makes laws, emotional laws are counterproductive. The western countries have done a great job of accepting Muslims for example even its obvious tht their way of life runs against much of what they have fought for. They have also accepted free speech...not because they are stupid or otherwise. By the way, being gay has little to do with western values. It's just development and maturity to understand tht actually, the other person is not as bad as we think.

Homosexuality and anything associated with it is a a private matter and should remain so unless one commits a crime and by the way regardless of their gender. There are many gapping holes in the bill. The real test lies in in its implementation. It’s likely to victimise many innocent Ugandans. It’s also a negative PR for Uganda PLC.

I think more focus of resources should be on all citizens living a basic quality of life than deviation from the big problem affecting the majority to live as humans

I just enjoyed Mwenda's discomfiture🤣🤣, while he fought so hard not to give triggered responses. And asking questions in the hope of triggering disoriented answers. Jajja Mwenda, sin is sin did you like the awkwardness?

You started your statement well...until u started using sin and God. We have to take this religion with a pint of salt. Some Muslims believe non believers should be thrown off cliffs. Some Americans believe that only Christians should be their president. I can go on and on in the name of religion. Religion throughout history has been a tool of control and to some extent subjugation of women. British used it on us and it worked. Muslims still do it in islamic countries.....My point is that we need to use a bit of common sense, and reasoning to make decisions like this. Just because we hate these acts doesn't mean we should oppress others. There has to be a halfway point of give and take to leave in a good place.
