Is thermal paste needed?

Hello Internet,
When I was building in the be quiet! pure base 500, I was too lazy to add thermal paste between the heatsink (be quiet! dark rock slim) and the cpu (i3-8350k). Which got me thinking is it necessary to put thermal paste? I know thats best practice and weve all been told you have to but I wanted to see for myself.

Still the CPU was cooled a bit by heat spreader. Mind the main problem is the size of core. There is too much heat on too small surface. Deliding the CPU can instakill it.

I just recently I realized that my computer had an i5 that could be overclocked and my son's computer had an i5 that could not be overclocked. Actually scratched just a little bit of thermal paste off of both of them so I can see what type of i5 they were. Then I took them both out and switched them. Neither one of them are turning on at this point. Not sure if I scraped off too much thermal paste or there's just too much cat hair and both of them To be able to function. I reinstalled them in the correct mobo incase that was the problem. Now I have to wait and see and hopefully soon get some more thermal paste and get some of those are cans and dust them out.

It sounds like it may be two different chip sets and thats why it wont boot. I once tried booting a 7700k in a board that didnt support that chip and thought the chip was bad cuz the original chip worked. Man I felt dumb when I realized my mistake.

I was putting in my ssd in my pre built pc and I didn’t have enough space for my hands to put it in so I removed the cpu cooler and now I want to put it back on but there are no bolts to screw the screws in which is really weird it was just screwed onto the thing that you pit under your motherboard and screw the bolts on to and now somehow the screw don’t reach that far down. Also do I need to apply new thermal paste or is it fine withe the old one? Please someone help me!!

It sounds like you didnt get the screws in the correct way or rather in the right position. You should see if you can find a guide for your pre-built. Also you should repaste everytime you put on a heatsink. You may be ok to temporarily use whats there until you can get new paste to use.

@@ockerpijlman6733 generally you dont want it hotter than 80c continually. But it should save itsself and power off if it hits 100c

You can do anything you want. :) But theres potential to where thatd be OK. But really thermal paste is cheap so if you can add then you should

I should of rerun the tests without aida for the first tests but my license expired and I figured exactness wouldnt be needed for this. :)
