200dB (dB(SPL), the dBA scale is probably undefined at this level) is just enough to cause death in a human. Eardrums rupture at 190. Even if you do manage to double the SPL (Sound Presssure Level) at points where the sound from two speakers are in phase, that will only add +3dB(SPL), by definition. A 100dB difference in SPL means that the pressure is ~2^33 or about 8 billion times louder.

Thanks for the very informative video. Just wanted to give a little decible calculation correction. When adding dB, they increase on a logarithmic scale. 100+100=103dB. It still sounds 2x as loud as 100dB, though, so what you said did make sense. I'm gonna spend some time reevaluating my fan curves. GPU hotspot/CPU is currently sitting around 70C/40C while fans are producing 42-44 db of noise. But it still seems a little loud, i can definitely hear the cooler's pump still.

Fml. Thank you in particular for that info on resonance when all fans run the same speed. Now I know why I had such a hard time finding a quiet configuration for my system. I had turned off every fan but one and checked at what rpm I started to hear it (all fans were the same model of course), and then set all the fan curves exactly like the first. To my amazement and frustration I could suddenly clearly hear the fans. After a lot of testing I did end up staggering the different fans slightly, since that seemed to help. I just could not figure out why it helped. Finally I am at peace ;)

GG man, the thing he didn't test at the end though is to have the slight positive air pressure. I'd recommend you check that when on full blast mode.

Smart Fan you could use also if you got aorus motherboard. It can do auto calibrate or you can fine tune with custom fan curve to your liking. Works great.

in gigabyte bios u need to hit TUNE ALL above the different headers. that way you can put the curve u made on any or every header. saves alot of time. pro tip

As an acoustic engineer, he is right.... All fans at same speed create resonance peak multiplied by the factor of fans... If set of fans are on different rpm, you can smoothen the whole frequency curve .. Also, push rad fans harder than intake :) + There is case resonance and that can make things worse or better on how fans are adjusted High speed means higher rotation per second Which can be converted into wave So a 3k fan will peak at 3kHz and it will be apparent A slow rpm will generate low notes And as said by earl gedlee, its the high frequency noise which is more apparent and damaging than low frequency and if you start moving in 500Hz to 5kHz range, this is speech intelligebile region... So higher frequency will sound worse and worse.. And a fan with crazy high rpm can even sound like screeching

My mobo has 4 Chassis Fan Connector, in addition to the 2 CPU ones. I plan on taking advantage of that to have the fans not just at diferent speed. But to not have all running at all time (off or really low). So if I leave the computer just downloading something. It's just exhaust on the back and one of the intakes on the front. And when using it, as load increase fans boot up and speed up individually. My GPU has a thing it shuts the fans when not needed. I have that off and just to run slow, out of paranoia. I've also have seen some PSU that have that feature that turn off the fan when min load. I really like the idea of keeping the fans as high as you can without noise. You'll most likely tune it out. And only notice the fans when they need to boost. And by keeping them relatively high, you won't really need to unless you are truly stressing the PC since you'll be keeping it steady cooled.

That high idle fan speeds will maximice your dust deposition. The flatter your fancurve is the less ramping up down noise u will get. U have the steapest fancurve possible. Why not tuning it to 30 or 35db in normal workloads intead of +40db? With a linear curve from 20%/30°C to 70%/90°C to 100%/100°C. Offset the different headers by 3-5°C to spread the spectrum. It will be quieter and less dusty ... test it with u db meter 😉

@@jeroenvdw my Mainboard has 7 connectors (MSI B650 MAG Tomahawk WIFI). I connected all 5 Fans (3 Bottom Case and 2 Front) together on the FAN Hub. My CPU Cooler (BEQuiet Dark Rock 4 Pro) is also connected via Splitter in one Mainboard CPU connector. It's cool and quiet but maybe ill split the Bottom Fans and the Front Fans and connect them separately

@17:55 +3dB(a) used to be considered as a perceived doubling of the sound volume (recent research suggest a doubling is reached at +5dB(a)) - meaning that the effective perceived sound level is doubled (according to traditional conventions) with the new fan configuration when under stress compared to idol.

The whole point of using dB is because perceived volume is logarithmic so doubling the acoustic pressure (+3dB) doesn't feel at all like doubling the volume.

Fans tell the cfm at max speed, but i don't know how i'm supposed to configure it with différents curves speed to still have a correct pressure in the box at all time. (sry for bad english)

Oh Buddy, how could you have left the Seasonic series out? Especially the Titanium models with the hybrid switch that turns the fan off completely unless the PSU gets hot. Mine is a TX850 and I usually run slight overclocked and use about 275W from the wall and the fan won't even turn on! But it will if I run the GPU hard and push the 5950x to the max while in a high overclock. They say you have to get above that 50% mark before it tends to turn on. I feel that it's very stable also, and since I usually leave mine running 24/7 doing 3D art at full speed, I'd decided to go very high in my standards this time. Also the 12 year warranty! This might be my last PSU in my entire life! And I so lucked out getting it factory reconditioned for about $80 off, I think not even used, all the cables were still in the sealed plastic bags except one. But such deals don't happen often.

conversely, if your environment is already noisy, running all fans at the exact fan curve will cost you less electricity seeing as they resonate which makes it less harder to push/pull the air

From my experience with older PC case (the one with side fan). Pulling air through obstacle (like the grill on the front) will cause louder noise than pushing air through obstacle (like the grill on the exhaust fan on the back). Specially on highest rpm. Perhaps the natural harmonic resonance of the grill happened here at that high rpm.

No, a linear fan curve will NOT cause the speed to go up and down the way you say. But your fancurves are whacked, because for the last 3 degress of temp rise, your fans suddely go to 100% hen they are vertical like that. And your method of setting the lowest fan speed to "can't hear it" is also whacked. You might not hear one of them, but 7 fans will be audible when the minimum is 60% pwm. A better idea is to set them low, say 20% at idle around 40C, and then the curve should increase linearly from 45C to the maximum around 85C. This will give a smooth increase with performance where you won't notice it, because it rises so slowly.

Nice... thanks... I build my rig I did find out exactly that, noise!!... I am using the Phanteks ph-es614ptg and it is a fan hub included I just plug everything in there but I noticed a conflict between the hub and the bios and MSI software, super loud, but after this, I will use just the headers themselves, the case have 2 140mm fans connected to the hub but I am going to eliminate the hug and use splitters for 2 if need it, 😊 honestly the hub is the lassie way, just one and forget it, but for a nice harmony I think this is the best way and also for the safety of the pc because nothing is better to let you know the real temperature than the motherboard. I just build a pc with an arctic liquid freezer iii 360 with the one connect cable. This means I have 3 fans + pump at cpu header and then 3 sys fans in a sys fan header. How do I best configure these with only 2 different headers? Will all the fans just run at 100% speed because the pump needs to or how does that work?

Two 100 dB sources = 103dB. And those are not subwoofers, they are monitors, they are there for the musicians to hear themselves. They appear them out so they can hear themselves over the whole stage. And in audio/music, it's better if they are together and perfectly in phase. This was not a good analogy for why fans can resonate together, a completely different phenomenon. 3dB is a doubling of acoustic power, because of the non linearity of our ears,10 dB is a doubling of loudness.

Hi, I don't know how many times I watched your videos and I want to thank you for your work and precious suggestions. I'm configuring a Threadripper workstation, a config very similar to the one you have created last year with a meshify 2 XL case and two RTXs. Because I do 3d renders with gpus, I'd like to know if all the case fans must be connected to the motherboard (Asus WRX80E SAGE Wifi II) or to an hub. I'd like to have full manual control of all fans except the ones attached to the cpu cooler (Noctua). Also I'd like to control the speed, curves and groups using an Elgato Streamdeck. What dou you think about the new Corsair iCue link fans? The software which control them seems to be very powerful. You said that fans control software could crash, then stop all the fans. I hope you will test the new Corsair fans to understand if they are reliable. I could buy Noctua fans (also the industrial versions) but I need manual control to boost the speed during heavy rendering tasks. Let us know what you think.

There is no point ramping up your pump speed, all that is going to accomplish is shortening its life span. It won't do much for your temperatures. The best way to secure your pump a long life is to run it at a medium, steady pace.

I prefer to approach this differently. Rather than "make them spin as fast as possible without them getting audible" I want the minimum speeds that still keeps my system sufficiently cool. I have a 65 W processor that doesn't even hit 30 degrees Celcius when idling during which passive cooling will do. I don't want the CPU fan to move at all until 35 degrees. Same with case fans. My system is dead silent most of the time, not wearing out any fans and not collecting dust.

@@Rocky_Aspen6021 I have a Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite V2 Rev1.2 wth a 5700G processor. With this I can do what I described just fine using only BIOS. I also have an Asus Prime x570-Pro with the same processor. With the latter I cannot do this, it calibrates and then won't let me set fan speeds below a baseline which sucks (fans won't ever stop and the system is still needlessly noisy). I've been told it can still be achieved with dedicated fan software, I haven't tried that yet. I first want to try to trick the calibration process by keeping the CPU fan spinning manually with a hair dryer or something so it will believe the fan still spins when fed a low voltage and it will set the baseline lower. I've also read that temporarily changing the fan won't work because the board will detect this and reset everything.

That's what I was thinking, too. Just about every time I've seen things on the front of the stage like that, they've been monitors. What I couldn't tell, is if the artist had in-ear monitors. I guess if it was a multi-artist event, you'd set it up so the monitors were there for everyone scheduled to play.

My AIO uses it's own hub. My 3 intake fans and exhaust fan are on a different hub. Not for this reason, but because I can't fit 7 fans in one hub and sync the RGB.

I'm not sure about them curves ... I don't like the steep slope you are using after 70 degrees .. if the system oscillates in temp 5 degrees the fan will go from 60 duty to 100 duty all the time up and down

My source of quality vids and content. Anyway, i have 2 fans that came with the case, both has 3pins. I will both place them as my exhaust, 1 at the back and on the top of the case. What im planning to do is to connect each of them to the 2 bq pwm fans(with 4pin splitter) and the other bq fan to another header. Each of the splitter are meant to control 1st and 3rd fan in the intake(with the 2 3pin fans connected). Is it ok to connect the 3pin fans to the 2 bq fans ill control? Thank you!

90 degrees? Guys just buy a nice headset, noise is normal when you have a powerful pc, you would get less noise doing this but the temps would go. Initially I dis this fan curve setup but the cpu went on 85 degrees with kraken x73 cooler, now the pc fan curve is at 0 at less than 45 degres and then it ramps up

out take is not a right way to call it , its an exhaust ... when u out take something it means u take it in , from the outside , what u do with EXHAUST fans is pulling the negative pressure out the case...

Haven’t ever built a PC, haven’t even owned one since pre 2010. I love the design of this build but the cpu temp spike is a bit concerning, is that normal to see a cpu hitting 90 on that test? Would using a less power hungry cpu/gpu result in a more balanced system with the cooling as is? Building my rig for HD streaming/ 4K Gaming/ 4K video processing(basic stuff export, compress and upload). What CPU/GPU will give me the best performance and temp stability for what I’m looking for?

Is not recommended to run a CPU that hot for a long time. I don't get it, you haven't build/own a newer a pc than 2010 and you ask for a high end one without telling what games/apps you use, no budget also.

I probably spent 6-7k getting this streaming setup together. When someone is looking for a streaming PC you have to accommodate for both cpu and gpu heavy games on top of running obs/streamlabs/ sound mixer software/ discord calls and the live streaming itself.

Many factors will impact the temperature inside the case and you might start looking at radiator coolers for the CPU and GPU. Fan selection and layout, case ventilation etc. Also I saw another video on KZbin where there was a sort of dead spot on the bottom left corner near where the PSU would be and below the GPU by Linus who did a smoke test in order to discover it. Another streamer named JayZee I think, has a video on software that has been developed to manipulate all fans in the case including those on the radiator (AIO) and the GPU each on separate curves that can then be combined. The ultimate in flexibility being written by an enthusiast developer that is free to download. It would be interesting to me also if someone had a lab bench with infrared camera and or temp sensors to look at heat vortexes and thermals in different case designs with different cpu and GPU layouts to see what ventilation solutions work best.

the difference between 80 and 100% on your pump is gonna make basically zero difference. the higher the volume of the pump, the less time the liquid spends cooling inside the radiator. this would be a factor in a high temp high volume situation like a car but not on 2ox of fluid in a computer.

I meant to ask 1. is it possible to set different fan speeds for the Thermalright 120's two fans if I plug one terminal into the CPU_FAN and the other into CPU_OPT? Is this even a thing I can do, or do both fans just run at the same speed? 2. Will my 850 PSU be enough for this system if I double the RAM? 3. just watched your Win10 Boot disk video, is this the same process if I want to load win11 right away?

I'd uninstall the software that has control over fans. But also if you haven't touched the fans on the software ' Armory crate from Asus' as an example, then it should by default read it from BIOS first :)

Thanks for the video. I just built a system with a 12900k and an RTX3080 12GB w/64GB of DDR5 RAM. I ran Cinebench and was alarmed to see CPU temps up to 93 C. You didn't seem concerned about 92C. Am I worried for nothing? The rig is AIO cooled.

I sort of have the same config as you, my temps were higher. I'm not an expert, but I've undervolted my cpu, this dropped my temps and power use.

Important Note: It’s important not to run too many fans from one header! Too many fans connected to a single header could pull more power than the fan header itself is rated at and thus could burn something out on the mother board. For instance: The fan headers on my ASUS ProArt Z790-Creator WiFi motherboard are rated at a maximum power draw of 1 amp / 12 watts per header. That means I can only run 2 Phanteks T30 120mm fans (@ 0.36 amps / 4.32 watts per fan Advanced Mode) per header without running the risk of overloading the header. That’s just my take on it. . . IMHO;}

It depends on the fans you are running and what their power consumption is. If the total power draw for your three fans when run at maximum rpm is less that 1 amp / 12 watts then running three fans off one header shouldn’t be a problem. I am running the Phanteks T30 120 fans in advanced mode so at 3,000rpm three fans would exceed the maximum rated power draw per header of my motherboard (1 amp/12 watts). As far as control, PWM fans(4pin) can be controlled using the system bios of your motherboard providing your motherboard contains that function and your fans are plugged into the correct headers✌

200 dB is 1024 times as loud as 100 dB as perceived by humans. i don’t think you’re getting that kind of output increase at a concert from some floor standing speakers just by spacing them properly XD if you mean the sound doubles then you’re at 110 dB, not 200 dB. (+3 db is the double in pressure, +10 dB is perceived as twice as loud by humans)

You should make the fans the slower as possible while maintaining good temperatures.. if you increase the RPM it will reduce its life span.. i love NZXT because they include a microphone that sits inside the PC and changes the fan speeds as needed without making it audible as possible… i love the smart way

I completely agree but at the same time I'd rather reduce fans lifespan than other more expensive components. I can see both sides. Especially if you have top of the line fans. I have noctua fans so they are very expensive also.

Noctua fans (and most of the newer fans) has 150.000h MTTF of constant use which is 17 years, even if 100% RPM lowers its lifespan you will replace the case and computer before a fan dies because of use. I would rather keep my system cooler at low noise than try to save 7 years of lifespan of my fans.
