Is This 20 Years Old Xmas Life Hack Still Relevant in 2018?

I this video, I show you a Life Hack that is at least 20 Years old. I remember my dad's friends doing it when I was just a kid.
It's a simple and cheap way to make your NON-Blinking Christmas lights blink.
All you need to do is to connect a starter.
It's an awesome trick, but is it still useful after 20 Years?
It will only work with old type Christmas lights......light that have small bulbs, NOT LED's.
These days most of Xmas light are LED's and with a push of a button you can choose a blinking pattern, so making your light blink is not a problem anymore.

There is also a special "blinking bulb", (usually clear with a red tip, and often included in the pack of spare bulbs) that if you swap it out with one on the regular bulbs, it will make the whole strand blink.

It's essentially the same thing. If you open up a starter you'll find a bulb inside with a spark gap in it.

For sure it is still useful, at least I think so. Why would people throw away old light bulb strings which still work but do not blink? So it's better to buy a starter and connecting it to the old set than throwing away the old set and buy a new one which is blinking. Thanks for sharing. Thumbs up. And Merry Christmas

Usually, you only needed a 'blinker bulb' to make those blink. It would be a clear bulb usually near the beginning of a string of blinker lights. It might be a bit larger than the other bulbs and the 'insides' looked different. You could buy these bulbs in a replacement bulb set and use it to make your non-blinking string blink. - From someone who remembers the big old-fashioned Christmas tree strings.

That is a super neat hack and also very inexpensive. I wonder how it works with other light bulbs? Looks like you could make a replica fireplace with onenof those starters and a bulb. Great video.

Well, although we had a lot of those lights when I was young, we usually used the blinking-adapter. I have to admit I didn't knew this trick. Still sometimes there is people using those kind of lights, so yes, it might be something nice to know, and that might become useful under certain situations.

Well, I'm 41 and I can tell that, back when I was like 7~8 years old, there was (at least here in Italy) a little round grey adapter to allow lights blink (it was a thing with a resistor in series, which, basically, it's almost the same thing of using the starter...)

It all depends on what lights you have laying around and on the individual, if you have old lights and want them to blink then that hack will work but then again like you said before you can just buy new lights for 5bucks.

I don't know how much longer they will keep making the "older style" incandescent, Christmas lights, hopefully, a long time as i very much prefer them. The LED ones may be more power efficient, and last longer... but they just look so ugly. The incandescent ones are just so much more... "real."

I also like the way they look. Where I live, it's tricky to find old style Christmas lights. I visited a few shops, but everything was LED. I think people who love them should buy a few in advance, so you're set for the future.

my bulbs burned out and instead of paying 6 bucks for 20 bulbs we paid 14 bucks for a 49 foot string of LED's that are remote controlled, they look and work great.
