Is this 42" OLED TV the Perfect Monitor? 2022 LG C2

LG’s OLED TVs have been a popular choice since they released the CX range back in 2020 - however with the smallest version being a hefty 48” across it simply wasn’t feasible for many to include it in their setup.
That changes with the C2 range, which now includes a 42” version. In this video, I’m going to assess whether this TV could be the perfect monitor for both gaming & productivity.

For anyone looking at these as a monitor here is my experience, I just got a 55" C2 for multi use office/ Tv/ gaming and it ticks all the boxes. 55 inch works as a monitor and I use several docs and excel at one time so the extra real estate is amazing compared to dual monitors. The trick is to have a big deep desk to push it as far as possible. My version is the OLED55C26LD which has a white back(that u can't see) and a swivel stand. The advantage of the swivel stand is it has a metal circle base under the main stand that enables you to overhang the stand off the back of a desk making it further away from you which you need at this size. Forget it if your desk or room is too small. Change the desktop icon sizes to your liking and you very quickly get used to it so for a similar set up don't be afraid if a 55" if u have the room and need the screen space. The plus is after work or media editing you can sit far back and have a mini cinema experience. One thing to note is in PC use at desktop distance in pure white docs full screen like word, you may notice a feint blue or pink tint in some parts of the screen, especially at far angles which is not noticeable on video whites. You won't see it on a colored doc like an Excel doc. It is such a small compromise but something to be aware of when you get a new screen and expect every aspect to be 100% flawless in every situation. The PC mode works really well and you adapt to the size quickly. The slight off whites in PC docs to me is still preferable to QD OLEDs that may have perfect whites in PC mode may lack the clarity of this LG WRGB panel (which is so crisp and perfect as a monitor ) Vs the Samsung QD that has something different, and the real risk of new QD OLED tech being unproven and early reports of higher burn in risk on QD. There is no perfect solution so you need to decide what compromise you can accept? The C2 55" at reduced prices does a hell of a lot for it's price for PC work, gaming and TV with less worry about longevity. It also looks stunning on the stand and silver bezel and the OS is great compared to Tizen I've heard and lots of options to tweak settings. Lastly you have to treat this monitor differently with more care like you would a classic car Vs a standard one so you should hide desktop icons, hide taskbar and set the wallpaper to revolving dark or mainly black pics so there is no static image on too long to risk burn it. It's actually nice to have a clear desktop with a cool wallpaper as most people have stuff on the desktop they rarely use! I hope this helps anyone make a decision.

I bought the 48" C1 last year and man is it a treat to use with my RTX 3080 gaming PC. I probably would've bought a 42" model if they had one, because 48" is quite big, unless you can sit at least 80cm away. But I have gotten used to 48" inches and I only felt like it was a problem once or twice, and it's perfect for everything. Productivity with dividing the screen and it's top tier for gaming, and is probably better than any monitor for this purpose. And of course it's amazing for watching videos and movies. Then I can really lean back and enjoy how gorgeous this panel looks, (or playing a RPG game with a controller. It's just as good, especially if the game supports well implemented HDR.)

I think 42"/43" is the sweet spot for 4K monitors. I've got the 43" Samsung QN90B ordered. Should be delivered this week. I'm going to compare it to the 42" LG OLED and see which works better for me. I'm a writer and gamer, so crisp sharp text and smooth graphics are most important to me. My 4+ year old 43" Samsung Q60R is showing it's age. I really hope one of these new TVs does the job. Nice informative video, mate!

I used a 40" 4K monitor for years, now I'm using two 22" 4K monitors with pixel scaling turned on at 2K @ 2x, so 4 pixels = 1 point. Running a large tv/monitor like this your head is constantly turning lower left, lower right, upper left, upper right etc. And doing it all day long gets tiring. When I had a large 4K monitor @ 1x, I found myself stacking 3-4 windows horizontally e.g. from left to right. So even though this TV is super nice, a super ultrawide or multi monitor setup would be more ergonomic.

In regards to burn in, I've used the LG CX 48" for over 1.5 years now. That's working from home for ~8h on workdays, plus any personal use on top of that. Windows and MacOS. There is absolutely no sign of burn in on it. I do use dark modes where available, auto-hide my dock/topbar/taskbar, have it calibrated to a low 120 nits brightness and turn it off when taking longer breaks. The sheer size of this thing is really the main drawback. I have mine mounted on a floor stand 1m away but either that or a wall mount would be pretty much a must with something this big to be comfortable. The 42" would be more manageable but would still benefit from having as deep a desk as you can get or a wall mount if you don't need a standing desk. While 42-48" might seem massive, remember that viewing distance matters a lot. You can't put it at the roughly 60cm distance you would put a 27 or 32" monitor, a larger display needs to be set much further away.

Previously I used LG 32UN880-B that for ergonomic quality and usefully i consider the best monitor on the market. Conclusion about the experience with Oled 42 C2: unfortunately too big, difficult to calibrate the color, problem to switch from 30 hz to 60 hz, if you use the max resolution you can see the pixel ! I am also considering this TV for monitor usage (double usage in fact), once you have configured an HDMI input port for the MBP, do the settings stays there on this port ? I mean, if you have another port plugged to a tv box for use as TV, going back to the "mac book port" you still have all the settings correct ? Note : this would be for a flat which is also a "second home" and I have the G1 55" at home, and I must say I'm not a big fan of the remote, so changing the settings often would be a pain. thanks for the video !!

I am moving up from my ACER 34 curvy and have been a bit concerned about the viewing distances and the ergonomics in general with the 42". I think it will be OK after listening to your review. I really am looking forward to getting it.

Thanks for this review, very informative ! I’m looking for a monitor that would be perfect for gaming and productivity but it seems that it doesn’t exist yet… I’m hesitating between the LG 40’´5K2K which looks perfect for productivity and this one that looks perfect for gaming + color accuracy … Would love to see an ultra wide oled panel from LG 😱

After so long I was eyeing that 48" CX. But it was too expensive. Then the C1 arrived. Then the C2. As much as I want the C2 mostly for the 42" as it is better size for a desk monitor+TV. It is just still too expensive. I was lucky the 48" C1 went on sale and stumbled upon it by chance and the store I bought it from also had a further 20% off. Dropping the price from £799 to £719. Ever since paying it the price bounce back to £869. Will see soon how it is in PC gaming!

I use the LG C1 48” along with two 38” LG ultrawides and one thing I can say for certain is that 48” is simply too big for PC monitor use. Sure you can place it far away from where you sit but you won’t be able to read anything with text being tiny. You can increase the windows scaling but that will cause a whole bunch of compatibility issues with apps and games that don’t scale well. Or you can do what I do by placing it closer to you (about 80cm away) and keep windows scaling at default 100%, but you won’t be able to see the corners very clearly due to proximity. I often find myself moving/resizing the windows towards the center of the screen, hence I am effectively wasting the 48” real estate. With that said, 42” is the maximum size that would work best as a PC monitor, so I’ll be switching my 48” to the 42” as soon as I cam get hold of one. The ideal PC OLED monitor would be a curved, 4K HDR, 120Hz, 42” or 38” screen. Once those are out I’ll be switching to a dual OLED setup for sure.

Oh a curved would be spectacular, but you already know the price is going to gouge it upwards of $1700-2000. Supply demand. It’s like they don’t wanna step on the toes of its monitors lineup, so I get it from a business sense .

@iXzenos how would you place the monitors of a dual set up? Side by side?
@iXzenoS
@iXzenoS 2 жыл бұрын
@@raphmermontagne Currently I use the LG C1 48" OLED as my primary monitor and to the side of that I have two LG 38" ultrawides (3840 x 1600) stacked vertically. I've tested both horizontal and vertical stacks for the dual 38" ultrawides and, for me personally, two 38" horizontal is too wide and impractical - you literally need to twist your neck left/right to see the far edges and becomes stressful and uncomfortable for daily use. On the other hand, I found that having these 38" monitors in a vertical stack (like a square) is less common but it's much easier on the neck and eyes I mainly use the bottom monitor when working and browsing, and just glance up to the top monitor which acts like a secondary screen with additional info (emails, playing music/videos in the background, etc). I've been able to use the full width of each screen this way without straining my body. All in all, if we get curved OLED/QD-OLEDs in the future, I would go with vertical stack for anything larger than 34" or 38", and horizontal for 34" or 32" and lower.

@2:00 At least I have heard an ergonomic rule-of-thumb that the top of the display should be eye level. The video presents a rule that center of the display should be eye level and the actual positioning presented in the video seems to be about halfway between the two rules. If I had the same desk and display, I would lower the display so that the top of the display is at eye level and get a stand that allows the display to lean back so that the center of the display "points" to viewers eyes. I suppose the rule I suggested is from a time when displays were smaller and could nowadays be adapted that rarely viewed/used areas of the display can be above eye level.

From what I’ve read about ergonomics, you want the top of the screen to be eye level, maybe a few inches below the top given the dimensions.

I sit 18" from three 23.5" lcd monitors, 1080p, 94 ppi, 10 years old, refreshing at 60Hz. The outer two are oriented in portrait while the middle is landscape. The outer two are angled facing in toward my face. I think I will like the quality improvement of 103 ppi, but would you say that you are sitting back further primarily because the ends of your display are not angled in towards you?

The picture quality from the C2 is definitely beautiful. I have a 77" C1 and seeing the deep blacks was a huge difference compared to my previous TV. I've always been curious about using something as big as a 42" as a monitor, personally I think it may be too big for me but I have yet to try it.. And since you game on it, it worked out perfectly for ya. So would this be your permanent setup moving forward? And every time I see your office space, I seriously wanna go and declutter mine 😂

This is the Oled TV I have been waiting for, to use as a monitor. I am wondering, if you used a thunderbolt to HDMI cable, would you get a higher refresh rate using a M1 MBP? Although that's not a deal breaker for me. The lack of a type c connection is a shame but I guess is to be expected on a TV. Burn in is my biggest worry as I leave my monitor on 24hrs a day. Looking forward to your update.

Hey Bruce, I’ve looked into this extensively and everything I’ve read suggests that MacOS will only output video at HDMI 2.0 standards - regardless of the port used. I have a couple of adapters & connections on the way to test this but I have a feeling we’ll be stuck with 4K60 for the time being unfortunately.
