They told him when late in the show as well (early actually, most Avatars learn when they're 16). The scene with the items you were describing only determines WHO the Avatar is, the monks are the ones that knew and decided to when to tell Aang.

ATLA Book One was 20 episodes. They had to cut it down to 8 and I think they did a phenomenal job.

I don’t get this argument tbh. 20 episodes of 20 minutes i.e. 400 minutes give or take. Live action was 8 episodes of almost an hour each i.e. 480 minutes.

About the Airbender ritual to identify the Avatar: Finding out and telling him are two separate things. In the original show they do that pretty early on and tell him later reminding him that he chose those toys when he was little. "We have known you were the Avatar for some time. Do you remember these?..."

According to a reviewer that was at the premiere due to developing a friendship with a Netflix executive said that at the afterparty, Albert Kim (the showrunner) was self-aware about putting too much exposition in that he himself even said the critique before she was able to. According to this unnamed executive they had an episode that original fans could follow, but anyone not familiar with the original was confused so it was a necessary evil that they really struggled with doing.

Watched all 8 Episodes. My score for the series is a 9/10 across the board. Definitely recommend. and I am watching with my 8yr old daughter this weekend. I Love the animation, as well as this Netflix live action. 1) They show the air nomad deaths, so to adults, watch first 20 minutes before kids. Otherwise kids can watch once Aang is in ice. 2) This is not a copy of the original. 8 Live action episodes to tell story of 20 cartoon episodes. Episode 6 of original looks like it will be in season 2. Season 2 episode 2 of original is added into season 1. 3) The first episode is the first 3 episodes together with the deaths of the air nomads. 4) Original cartoon Episodes 4, 5, 7-10, 12, 13, 15, and 17 have their essential episode essence represented, in episodes 2 through 6 of the live action. A lot of things are re-ordered. Some things are expanded You will see parts of things from a recognizable episode mashed with events from other episodes. 5) Watch the entire thing before judging. Sometimes you will think something was forgotten only to learn, that the other parts or viewpoints of a given episode are in a follow-up episode. The way the episodes are mashed together means the story jumps between events of various episodes, so the representation of one episode might occur across 2 or 3 episodes; or there may be an intervening episode. 6) Do Not PreJudge. The format is different than the original cartoon, initially the order will seem odd. Just hang in with it, overall it does work. 7) Episodes 11, and 14 are not shown, but pay attention anytime Zuko, Iroh, or Zhou get a report. The events of those episodes are mentioned but it’s a one time blink, or talk and you will miss it. These episodes have indirect representation in the series. The honorable mentions in the reports made me laugh while watching. 8) The Jeong Jeong part of Episode 16 might occur in season 2, or 3 without Zhou. Jeong Jeong is not in season 1 of this live action. 9) The last 2 episodes of the Netflix Live action have been mashed together and reorder the events of original cartoon episodes 18-20. The Katara vs Paku fight is Wow! 10) Koh will appear far earlier than expected. and not when or how fans expect. He is still a creepy, freaky, and dangerous spirit. They expand Koh’s role to include some of the lore with him from the comics as well. He is voiced by George Takei (Sulu from 1966 Star Trek). 11) The original voice actor of the cabbage man, plays and is the cabbage man in this Netflix live Action series!! 12) The previous 3 avatars and ocean spirit La, at points will be given permission by Aang to use him as a channel. Kyoshi is obvious. Many people apparently missed when Roku did so. Pay attention, do not miss it by talking or by being distracted by what Roku is showing and teaching Aang. Kurik will refuse. La’s turn is OBVIOUS. 13) Azula’s machinations are definitely as evil as Ozai’s. Yes Azula learns lightning bending before the end of season 1. She is far darker than the original cartoon.

As a fan of the og, personally I like the show so far tho i can see why other fans might not since it tells the storh differently i guess. It's not as good as the cartoon by any means but it's still doing ehat basically every adaptation of a fantasy story you can think of does , which is tell the same story but in a slightly different way ( Harry Potter movies , game of thrones ) . The only things I disliked was honestly what they did with one of the past avatars . Yes sokka's sexism being toned down is a thing here unfortunately but it's not really a whole deal breaker for me since it was basically just a 4 ep arc for him in the very beginning of season 1 and then never a factor that affects him or anyone again . I don't have a problem with them combining eps or rearranging events or anything cuz they basically still say the same story. The vfx look stunning and the actors do their job well for the most part ( zuko is a standout imo by ep 4 and 6 ) . And I think the show aimed to tell the story to a new audience more because most ppl I know that haven't seen the og cartoon really like this show and it will only make them go and check out the og cartoon too so win win . Can't wait for season 2

I actually didn’t mind the Sokka development and his lack of sexism. I won’t write spoilers but they did replace it was something else. Katara onthe other hand… you will see. She suffers from the modern writing that takes place for strong girls and women. She just doesn’t really have an arc lmao

I don’t think the southern water tribes had the same customs as the northern water tribe (or at least as strict) in the animated series. Gran Gran most likely would’ve told her that women don’t fight or to not get her hopes up if that was the case. That would explain why Katara didn’t expect Paaku to turn her down on the training. Also I don’t mind the changes and additions with the story. It eliminates the questions that people probably asked over the years like how did they get there? How did they know that? Why did they do this? For example, why Aang has markings. Also like you pointed out them adding another character around Sokka’s age to take over while he’s gone. And like u also pointed out, them having the festival is probably a solution to the a question that was probably asked, did they send an army to all air temples at the same time? How did they eliminate all the air nomads?
@arcticfrond8342

Agreed, the southern tribe didn't have the same norms. We got flashbacks to the southern tribes fights in "the puppetmaster" and there were several female waterbending warriors alongside Hama.

I'm waching one eps at a time as well. Honestly it think the format of the show benefits from it as one can go back and really take in all the small things instead of a binge rush. I honestly loved how they chose to open the show with the air nomad genocide, it lets the watcher really understand "this is not the cartoon". Some of the writing and acting is a bit uneven but serviceable at the end of the day

For all we know, the toy selection could've also happened before, it wasn't just shown here. That's how the monks identified who the Avatar is, Aang wouldn't have known by then because he was still a baby/toddler. This is just Gyatso revealing it to Aang. They were separate events.

You can tell why as a child watching this they wouldnt hit upon all the death that would have insued which is why they didnt show it. This being a series meant for adults we see the dive into all the death because as an adult we tend to have a different focus at that stage of our life.

There has been a lot of discourse over the decision to drop Sokka's sexism. Personally, I think it was a good choice. That was never a big part of Sokka's character, and when your already condensing 20 episodes into 8, why waste time on something like that. Sokka's arc throughout the show centers much more about how he fits into the world as a budding warrior, aspiring engineer, strategic planner and bender amongst non benders. I'd much rather them focus on these things.

Trust me, watching this I was confused about some of the scenes they chose to add in being pointless or just different for no good reason and applied nothing good… then scenes that were left out that were essential to character or plot being changed or forgotten. It’s weird. It’s like who ever chose which scenes went through didn’t have a priority list of importance and created a hodge podge

It annoys me when people say the intro had exposition when literally Katara literally says the same things in the original into. And to make it even more weird is that she literally mentions that it’s not Katara’s voice. So if it was Katara in the into it wouldn’t be exposition and would therefore be ok?

@@talkingweevil3172 doesn't make sense to do a different take when the original is successful and well loved by a lot. Fans wants to see the story they loved in a new medium not a different story, this is why it's well anticipated. One piece's success is not because it is 1 to 1 to the source material because it is not, but it stayed loyal to it with some changes that makes sense in a live action. This show took away some of the most crucial and iconic scene from the original that makes it less enjoyable.

Respectfully asking why do you feel it gets worse....without spoiling it for others. I personally thought it was fun...this is by no means the animated series and that's the point..I went into it hesitant but as a fan eager to see how they can make the story their own. And to me personally they did. I was watching it with my little brother and he completely understood everything that was going on even though he's never watched the original series. But it's nice to know why other people have a personal distaste.

Not that good at all. The sequence of events from the first episode has been changed for the worse, there is no revelation of the characters and their development, the emotional connection between the main characters is not visible at all. The animated series is a show for the ages, this is a one-off series without a soul.

Adaptation. You cannot recreate 100% to what the cartoon was. It is just impossible. For example, the emotions are easy to mask and change in animation, but for live action, the actors are limited.

No, it's not good. The writing was done by some liberal arts community college dropouts who struggled with their first writing assignments and found a home with Netflix. The acting is clumsy and goofy and entirely unconvincing. It's sad that all the production value and good visuals go to waste.
