Suki is portrayed so well here. And I love the chemistry between her and Sokka. Also, They nailed Kyoshi. I love how much she towers over everyone, and the fight was so badass and honestly kind of terrifying.

Yeah. I like this change. History wise the 4 nations are each they're own culture for 10,000 years according to the animated canon. It makes no sense for those different cultures all to use the same alphabet and/or calligraphy. Now 2? Sure. Now 3? Highly unlikely. But 4 after 10,000 years? Heck no.

@brendanfalvy128111 ай бұрын
I think one reason we don't see them fight over the water bending scroll might be because it almost makes more sense that Aang needs to bond with those around him first / more than he might need to learn the bending. Gyatso didn't want to send him away yet, because he was worried Aang wouldn't be totally centred on the kind of person he is. I actually think it's a better emotional journey if Aang is far more concerned with mastering his own emotions and behaviour because he is scared of a power he already has by virtue of being the Avatar. I think it also allows Katara to have an uncontested direction, because she can be closer with her Gran Gran and the responsibility of keeping their traditions alive. Something she was motivated by in helping Aang in ep 1. Just thoughts
@Choleloverofdancemomsandmaddie10 ай бұрын
I wonder how Hama role is going to played one of the reasons she was able to manipulate katara was because she was so desperate to learn about her culture with the loss of the scroll in the original series how they going have hams teach katara blood bending in the future or are we going to see something new about their dynamic

Zamber, as someone that has seen the entire series, I have to say that I totally understand why they put Aang meeting Kyoshi before Roku. She is exactly what he needed to accept his role as the Avatar. Up until this point, Aang has been avoiding his responsability and he feared to lose control. Kyoshi gave him the "tough love" treatment, reminding him that he needed to do this, otherwise the entire world would pay the price. Roku would address Aang in a nicer way, but he wouldn't be able to impact him the same way Kyoshi did. Perhaps you haven't seen it just yet, but the difference between Kyoshi and Roku is abysmal. One had no fear to do what needed to be done to bring justice to the world, while the other always tried to practice restrain in fear of losing control, what eventually led to his own doom and consequently the Air Nomads and the world. That's why I say that Kyoshi being the first Avatar Aang meets instead of his immediate predecessor is a good change.
@Rmlohner11 ай бұрын
Thirsty Suki was such a delightful surprise, and I can't wait to see how they build on it. Also, I never would have believed you in the last two decades if you told me there'd be a version of Avatar where Zhao was my favorite character, but Ken Leung elevates the role so far above the cardboard villain he's always been, with one hilariously dickish line delivery after another that makes me smile every time he shows up.

@KevinDPomeroy11 ай бұрын
I have watched the entire season and I think I like this episode and the changes that were made the most. Pretty much all of the changes added to the story well. The change with Kyoshi's appearance made a lot of sense I think. If you recall Kyoshi does manifest during the trial Aang is under in the animated show, but it is weird she showed up there in some random village but on the island that is closest to her, nothing. This gives an in-canon reason for Roku manifesting in the fire temple as well. I get why they focus on Kyoshi more in this live action version as she is a fan favorite. Roku is my favorite of the past Avatars, and like you stated Roku is really important, as Aang's journey is the redemption of Roku's failure, and why he manifests so much in the animated show is that this his second chance to make things right. I really hope they make better use of Roku in the going forward.
@TheMrPeteChannel11 ай бұрын
I still think Kyoshi will have more screen time. Well this season.
@ultrabiohazard134411 ай бұрын
this is why avatar roku is the right choice to teach aang being avatar because he's more nicer than anybody avatar. in this live action avatar kyoshi want aang to more merciless and menacing to the enemy while in the last episode he will meet avatar kuruk and kuruk will force avatar to fighting alone to protect the other
@noctisastrum749511 ай бұрын
Plus, roku has a role to play in the story more than the other avatar. Since he indirectly cause the 100-year war by letting sozin live, which cause the air nomad genocide and the war. And let's not forget that he's zuko great grandpa, so having kyoshi being here feels pretty weak by comparison due to her not having anything that connects to the major story.

One big issue of the blending of storylines this show did is that for those of us that watched the show, it really pulled us from the show to keep doing, "Oh it's that person, wait but they're here? Guess they're Oh it's this storyline. I guess they're cutting it with". So our brains were constantly confused. I don't know what the fix for that would've been, bc it's not their fault. But it's the truth.

@MiraTheWarlock11 ай бұрын
I think the reason why he wasnt put in the uniform here was because while they do respect the uniform and what it represents, it was to humble Sokka for his chauvinist attitude. Because he doesn't have said attitude here, there wasn't the need Here he's not ashamed because a girl took him down, but because a PEER took him down. Sure Zuko easily beat him, but Zukos a bender, there's a bit of privilege going on. Suki's a fellow non-bender so them not being on equal footing combat wise, is making him feel he's not trained hard enough, and is unfit to be a warrior, not to mention protector to an entire village

As a man, it's interesting to me that if the leader of the kyoshi warriors was a man, and Suki was a guy, he'd be telling his son, "It's ok to go have your fun, but it's too dangerous, don't get attached". In fact that's what we'd assume, that to the men it'd be some conquest or just entertainment. So it was interesting to me that the female leader acted the same way, and we're so not used to that that we notice it. Like, "Oh, she's not like... telling her to stay away from him". I think in part is because we have this internalized concept that women "lose" during coupling, and men "gain". So we're not used to a mother not being focused on her daughter remaining "pure". It's awesome that young girls watching this won't have that as internalized as us if society keeps fixing these flaws.

Relating to motivations for going with Aang, I feel you on the issue of having the Gran Gran moment in the first episode. However, adding Gran Gran to the end, with Mom, and finding Gyatso's body, would have just been too emotionally confusing. After they rescue Aang in ep 1, they do discuss how they can't go back because it puts the village in danger; so I think they are driving the motivation to get to the Southern Air Temple there. But I think it's smart to have the Gran Gran moment here, even though it defers some level of fulfilment, because it answers Sokka's question - and one some of our audience might have rolling into Ep 2 - which is why us when we have our home to protect? There's already so much emotional grounding of story going on at the end of Ep 1, I think it would have created an extra level of complexity in tone for the end of the episode. That said, ideally they would have been able to budget at least 15-20 minutes more air time for episode 1 with the same amount of plot. Then I think there would have been space to figure out how to fit both in. But I'm good with this choice, because it reminds a new audience exactly what the stakes are for our friends and why they are here.

Kyoshi is the right choice though. In the animated series she is the past life that challenged him the most. They needed the warrior avatar because Roku, Kuruk, and Yangchen have not faced anything like Aang will. Kyoshi clears up a lot of exposition about taking responsability and action by her appearance.
