The Olympus Om-1 is an absolute creative powerhouse. In this long-term review of more than 8 months with the OM-1, I talk about how this is one of the most exciting cameras I've ever used, and one that sparks my creativity as a photographer.

This was not mentioned in the review, but when using the HI Rez mode in the camera (producing 50 or 80megapixel files) the camera takes many shots which it combines to create the high resolution image. A major benefit of this is that NOISE IS ELIMINATED. Even when using high ISOs, it is corrected from the combination of the many shots, taken with slight movements of the sensor, thereby recording detail information each time on a different pixel array. If noiseless images are required, use the Hi Rez modes.

Yep! This is so true and helpful. I mentioned it in passing, but didn't delve into why noise was impacted. Thanks for adding to this!

I have equally shot with full frame, APSC and M43 and agree totally with you on this. It is the camera I never leave at home if I am going somewhere to shoot. Regarding the noise, I have images at shot at 12k ISO that look great after processing with DXO PL6

Im so glad you made a OM-1 follow up video. Over the past year I have been using my Fathers original EM-1 more and more. So much so, that I purchased the 60mm macro and a couple months ago the OM-1. You can make a small kit with apsc, but when you want to bring a really versatile kit there is no comparison. I have been taking the 12-40, 60mm, and 75-300 on bike rides and Its laughable how light my backpack is knowing what versatility I have packed in it. And the image quality just like you said is more than enough. I still have a Nikon Z6II and a couple fuji cameras including the new 40mp XT-5 but still enjoy using the micro 4/3rd's more. You don't need to use specific software to get the best results like you do with the fuji xtrans sensor, and the olympus lenses are really impressive. Look forward to seeing more videos of the OM-1 in use. Thank again for the update.

Oh man, how cool!!!! YES! It's almost like it's a hidden secret. All these photographers espouse FF or whatever, and that's fine... but the freedom of packing all that gear in a bag that can tackle almost anything, along with the computational stuff, and you've got a powerhouse, right? I just WANT to pick up the OM1 because I know it can do so many things to fulfill my creative vision! Your kit right there is world class, right? You can get some of the best macro shots possible with the 60, do almost anything else under the sky with the 12-40, and then you have 600 mm reach as well. That is just nuts, right? Try doing that with any other system! I'll keep making videos my man! Thanks for always letting me know what you think!

Excellent review and spot on! I have two OM-1s and shoot with the 7-14, 12-40, 40-150 and 300PRO lenses. Such a versatile system. I recently spent 9 days on a landscape photography workshop in South Island NZ. Copped lots of good-natured ribbing from the Sony shooters re my ‘kiddie’ cameras but ended up with a lot of images the others missed given the superior image stabilisation and weatherproofing! 👍😉

I’m with you. Having shot full frame for years, I switched from Canon to Panasonic G9, and more recently to Olympus. I made the switch because of the quality, weight, length and resolution of these lenses. It was not about the limitations of bodies and sensors. Sure, I miss the low light and dynamic range of the FF. But, as you say, the utility of MFT is the kicker. The best camera is the one you carry. Look at how many great photos are captured by iPhones! MFT and Olympus in particular have rekindled my desire to record the natural world - that’s invaluable, and not measured in megapixels or dynamic range, but rather days in the field with a viable recording device. Oh, and my 70 year-old back is truly a MFT ambassador.

Totally - REAL pros find the system and the tools that work for them! That's it - that's the answer. If it's an OM-1 - great! If it's a GFX - Awesome! If it's a Holga - Great! The thing is: there is no right answer... but too many people dismiss something like the OM-1 when it might be the best camera for them. Well - I'm glad you are liking the OM-1, but I do like the R system too! Shot a ton with it last summer/fall and really enjoyed it.

I shoot with Olympus cameras for a long time now, to the point I had three of them at one time. I tried other systems to see what is out there, but ultimately kept Olympus and added GFX. Depending on what I plan to shoot I reach to one or other system without any seconds thoughts about resolution. And good point about colors from Olympus, they are outstanding with and without tweaking.

The Olympus "vivid" setting is the best I've seen for OOC JPEGs. Most cameras with this or a similar options just make everything look awful. "Natural" is more a flat color profile you can then work with in post, but vivid gives great results you often don't even need to edit. RAW becomes a nice backup in the instance the JPEG just can't be made what your creative minding is looking for.

Oh man. You know... the toys to play with in the OM1 are almost worth the price alone. Love all the fun things it can do - but I honestly doubt there is any reason Fuji couldn't do a lot of it, especially in the X-H2s... I hope the X-H2s innovates a little more with time because the computational stuff from the OM1 in that body would be SICK!

You call them parlor tricks, but I call them powerful! In the last week I've sold enough photos from the OM-1 to pay for the camera BECAUSE of those "parlor tricks." I bought my OM-1 six months ago, it is a huge upgrade from my last camera, the Olympus EM-1 Mark 1. I have a big learn curve, but I'm making progress. On top of the OM-1, I bought the Zuiko 100-400mm in June and I have taken shots that I could only have dreamed about a year ago. This is an amazing camera and system. I'm glad you brought up the fact that the OM-1 is not a perfect camera and that is no such thing. I'm tired of all the APS-C, FF, and Medium Format fanboy hate about the sensor size when they refuse to acknowledge the flaws in their favorite systems.

While that Auto-Focus mode makes it easier, it has never been a problem on the Olympus m4/3 cameras since the E-M1 (2013). As in the E-M1 Olympus brought with firmware update the starscape live view mode, that increase the exposure time so much that you can focus manually to stars easily. You just set camera on tripod, choose your star on what to focus (if not bright) and manually focus on it with 14x magnification. You clearly see the star to be in focus or out of focus. And then just don't touch anymore to the focus ring. If you had a clear night sky, you could even use then the normal AF to focus on brightest stars. Just following the focal length rule to eliminate the movement, it was possible get excellent shots in camera. But that still means I was jealous to the Pentax that utilized their sensor shift technology with GPS to compensate the earth rotation and you got multiple times longer exposures without stars trails. That was back then a thing that Olympus should have licensed or build own, where example for 10 seconds is the starsky tracked and detected how does earth rotate, and then take the shots by shifting sensor around the earth rotation axis. If this way you can get 1-4 minute exposures, instead just 20-25 seconds, you are golden...
@october001
@october001 6 ай бұрын
@paristo I'd happily sell you my Pentax kit! Yes, their astro mode has no equal in non-astro specific photography, but after dealing with weird screens and jeweler loupes, etc. I'll take smart astro AF in a heart beat.

I have an E-M1 MkII and E-M5 MkII, the 5 is smaller and in some ways easier to use but the pro E-M1 is better all round when you get to know it. Yes I would love a GFX for some situations but I`m not a pro. Olympus/OM suit my needs. DXO Photolab with their Deep Prime XD is fantastic at removing noise and seems to suit Olympus/OM cameras. The one area that is an equalizer is printing your images. Most all work will be printed at 300dpi, so from a resolution perspective most all formats will likely be similar. The real difference will likely show up in the depth of field performance and perhaps some benefit of dynamic range in certain circumstances. Noise might be a factor, but that can be manageable in software. I use the 80 megapixel feature for product photography. I use 20 and 50 megapixels for everything else.

The question many photographers have to ask themselves is if they will mainly be making super large prints. Like more than 2 metre wide (that's over 6 feet). Because when posting high resolution images on the net, they are seldom 10 megapixel (or ca. 4000 pixels wide) and then there is no way of knowing what (modern) sensor is used. The drawback of a FT sensor is it's resolution. That means that the lenses need to be super-sharp to match the resolution. The OM-1 has a pixel pitch of 3.32, which surpasses that of a 50 megapixel full frame. I don't have an OM-1, but the images I take with my E-M10III at ISO 3200 are indistinguishable from the ISO 3200 images with my Nikon D600. Not out of camera, but out of DxO Photo Lab. You could argue that this is bs, but it all comes down at how capable a sensor is to retain the colour information at high ISO levels. The Nikon D750 surpasses the E-M10III for sure at higher values when processed in PL, but the fact is that mostly I don't even need such high ISO levels because the Image Stabilisation is excellent. For instance I have shot the night sky at ISO 1600 and an 8 seconds exposure handheld. You probably guess that the image contains stars. Tiny super-sharp dots. In the image (taken at f/2.8) every star is sharp. Handheld means that I stood in an open field with the camera in my hands and the viewfinder cap supported by my chin. Nothing else.

Good review Jerred! I may be following in your footsteps. I only recently discovered the OM-1 was a stacked sensor. Stacked sensors have become incredibly important to my orchestral and theatre shoots. The XH2S a total work horse. I can't quite afford a second XH2S so I have been making do with the XS20, but it is frustrating to keeping a cap on shutter speeds to avoid banding issues. I'm seriously considering an OM-1 to entering the game, to shoot along side the XH2S. The price of the camera seems quite reasonable, the only hurdle the price of that 45/1.2! I need to find out more content of this camera for serious portraiture work, its hard because many videos that exist on the OM-1 are adventure and wildlife based. I'd like to understand its Face/Eye Detection features more, how sticky it is, under AF.C, ES mode, can I bind a button to change the eye quickly, stuff like that. If you're ever dry for video ideas! :D

I am very happy that I got the OM-1 camera and no regrets. The OM-1 is aimed at a different user. Want a smaller camera then get the PEN. The ergonomics of the larger body is easier to hold for longer periods of time. I never liked the ergo of film camera. Some people just like to complain. I have own several Canon crop sensor and one Nikon full-frame camera. I switched to m4/3 back in 2019. I have the EM-1x and was thinking of maybe switching and looked at what Canon. I was very disappointed with the offerings for what I wanted and stayed with m4/3 and got the OM-1. I am amazed with the images that I am getting. I shot Micro Four Thirds starting with the GH1, then GH4, GH5, EM1 (mk1) and EM10-II. I loved the small size and weight. I also shot with Canon & Nikon full frame systems, including pro bodies. Then I took a break and sold most of my stuff. Currently shooting with an S5 and really like it, but am looking back again at MFT for size of the overall system (lenses) for travel, landscape and hiking, not to mention I like having "more" DoF for landscape, cityscape and street photography. As I look back over a decade of photos from mixed systems within Lightroom, I'm definitely seeing more noise from the MFT cameras, but the new denoise feature does an amazing job of fixing it. OTOH, I'm also seeing a lot of noise from my Canon FF DSLR bodies, including the 1DsII and 5D2 / 5D3 as well, so it was not all rosy in the FF garden just a few years back. I haven't shot with the latest mirrorless Canon bodies, but don't want to carry around those large lenses nor spend that kind of money now either!! So, I'll keep looking and watching.... thanks for a great video!

I agree woth everything you said. I recently sold my GFX100S, Sony A7RV, and other fujis. I kept the OM1 because it just does everything so effortlessly. The ergonomics and feeling in the hand is superb. Side by side vs the gfx100s, I can the the big difference, but the OM1 IQ is still superb. The drawbacks for me are the IQ at ISO above 8000, and the eye tracking is slightly below the Sony's. Outside those, the camera is just really good.

I was a long time Olympus shooter. Started with the EP1. I was pumped when the original EM1 and EM5 came out but, it took so long for them to get there Auto Focus squared away. I moved on. Then they sold the company. I moved on, but I have to say I do miss the camera. But, it was the small range finder cameras with the small primes that first attracted me. But, like Fuji they ditched those cameras. The newer cameras got bigger and bigger.

The best camera is the one you have with you, micro four third cameras offers a good balance between small footprint and capabilities in my view. Of course I would love to have a tiny camera with a 150 Mpx sensor producing 1 Mb files and giving me the tilt, swing and shift options of a view camera by moving the sensor. Add to it multiple shutters to expose different part of the image with different parameters and sync speed at all the shutter speeds. I guess I am daydreaming for now I will be content with the tools I have and focus on working around the limitations while enjoying the results.

I think you said it all when you said that it is not the best choice for beginners. It is a camera that can do a lot, but there is a lot to learn before you can maximize its output. Generally, it is easier to get better results with something like an A7III, but there is also a lot that you can do with the OM1 and can't do with the A7III. The flexibility the OM1 gives an experienced OM1 user is definitely not there with other systems, but how many folks really want to spend a lot of time getting experienced OM1 users for general shooting? Expose to the right when light is poor, nail the exposure in camera, learn the best AF setting based on the scenarios... when you can just grab a Sony that does all that for you and you can just focus on framing your shot? The OM1 is not for the masses for sure.

On hiking tours in our beloved Swiss Alps I mostly take only two lenses with me: The 8-25/4 PRO and 40-150/4 PRO. Optimal equipment for landscape and flowers, and even for some wildlife. There are lots of "beginner-friendly" models in m43 space (regarding budget and features) from Panasonic and Olympus, so I would concur that the OM-1 is not for beginners (the price point is a clear hint ;-)). I've come a long way when it comes to digital photography, and for that it is an Olympus Pen F and an E-M10II for me; maybe some more advanced model at some point, but for now I'm fine with these two (the Pen F used to scan film most of the time, having the 80 MP hi-res mode). My Sony A7 resides in a cardboard box (only used for test purposes now and then).

I'm using EM10 Mark IIIs with 25/1.8 and 45/1.8. Paid less than 1K for all brand-new items online. In combination with Topaz AI for noise reduction and non-subject blurring (to get full-frame look) it makes an ultimate machine for casual photography. Not using my D750 since I started using Olympus + Topaz. The only wish I had PD autofocus, but I do slow-paced photography and can always override autofocus with manual input, zero complaints for the price I paid. Colors are gorgeous, MUCH better than Nikon. Weight, size, costs - you can't beat that. Really don't see any point to spend thousands of dollars for non-professional workflow.
@thedarkslide
@thedarkslide 10 ай бұрын
Everything you said still holds true to the E-M1III and E-M1X. The E-M1III does not have the AI based subject focus, the E-M1X does have an earlier version of the subject based focus which may be good enough - if you know what you're doing (practice, practice, practice), you probably won't need AI auto-focus anyway. I've been using Olympus since 2008 throughout Four Thirds all the way up to the E-M1III, my only beef with the OM1 is the steep price increase for something that is fairly incremental to the E-M1III in my opinion and adds unnecessary upgrade costs everywhere, e.g., new battery type that is much more expensive, new external grip that is much more expensive, requires a dedicated charger to be bought which is much more expensive than previously - the upgrade cost from the E-M1III/X to the OM1 is not relational to the gains the OM1 awards in my opinion. And OM System is trying to pull a fast one with the "OM5" as well, which is essentially a crippled E-M1III, even including the menu system. Take the E-M1III, shove it into a cheaper, less sturdy body, cripple the shutter and drive modes a bit, remove the USB-C charging port with the older USB port, slap the new logo and branding on it - and la voila you have the OM5. If I were to recommend someone to get a high end Micro Four Thirds camera body I would point them to the Panasonic G9, Olympus E-M1III/X for best value. Or just wait out the inevitable price drops on the OM1 over time in a year or two.

I shot with Olympus gear for 18 years dating back to the E-500. I had a great kit built, E-M1 mark III, OM-1 and 5 pro lenses. I got bit by the FF bug and sold everything off and bought a Sony A7IV and a couple lenses. It did not take long for me to start missing my OM-1. The Sony is a great camera and IQ is really good. But in comparison to what I was used too, it was very boring. I was able to make a trade with a former Olympus visionary for my Sony body I got a PEN -F E-M1mark III, and 8 lenses. They were all sitting collecting dust so he basically just did me a major solid. My Sony had sat in my bag for about 2 months. Since the trade I have made several nature trips, did a photoshoot with a model friend IN lake Michigan. I was up to my waist at times in the water, laying down on my side. I never would have taken the Sony there. I trust the weather sealing 100% on Olympus gear. I then went on vacation where I used the ND filter at the Tahquamenon falls. I am enjoying photography again. The downside is for me though, and this bothers me to the point I'm not sure if I will be getting another OM-1. The AI tracking works awesome. But the same narrowminded thinking of the people at OM systems is just like the dummies who ran Olympus. They refuse to do anything to make their camera's track people better. Canon, Sony and Nikon are ALL putting superior AI auto focus in their bodies. They are not being so stupid to only promote their camera's for one type of photography. OM is pushing and only pushing their nature/adventure system. It was the whole reason I sold to begin with. I don't do just nature, or birds, or dogs, or planes, trains etc. When I asked them if they planned to do a firmware update to make it track humans better. Their dumb asses told me to use the eye detect. My reply was. How well does that work when the person has on a helmet? They never answered. To me. this just makes zero sense. With the portability and crop factor in the system. It could be great for outdoor sports and even well lit indoor. But with such a low keeper rate it's hardly ideal.

Yeah, I get what you are saying! Each system has a place for me - and for my portraits, I usually use something else... but I haven't investigated the eye tracking yet! I know my Sony A7iv with the Sigma 85 Art was almost PERFECT for eye tracking, while it was all over the place for birds (not in a good way). So... it's kind of one of those things where there is almost never anything that does everything perfect, right!? Thanks for your comment!

The auto focus was what caused me to jump ship. The original EM1 was supposed to be an action camera. That’s the way Olympus marketed it in all their adds. The CA was bad compared to a true sports like the Nikon D500 and the tracking was unusable. The EM1 mark 2 wasn’t any better.

Exactly the reasons I bought into the Olympus system years ago. I get more wildlife shots when quietly framing up a landscape shot because I'm "not a threat", or the animals simply don't know I'm there. So I just reach down and grab the other body with 300mm attached and snap away. Never had a concern about "image quality" either, at worst it's "just fine" and only goes up from there. I did stick with the EM-1 mark 3 though, the OM-1 wasn't enough of a jump. However, I do miss the idea of "bird autofocus", so maybe the OM-1 m2 will convince me.

You have gfx and the Olympus om-1…those are the two systems I’m pondering. Gfx for landscape and Olympus for macro. Jealous

The sensor size argument is so dumb to me. People only go off of what they hear. If you don't shoot full frame your aren't doing it right. I was very impressed by your results. I'm also impressed by my Fuji X-H2s . Especially when shooting in Raw.

So the sensor size of my iPhone 6s camera is good for you?
@TwoTimesRmedia
@TwoTimesRmedia 10 ай бұрын
@@marcel9568 not for me but I've seen people make money off of cameras on their phones. I've taken nice pictures on my pixel 6 pro that people are asking about and amazed about. If you can get a creative shot and have enough light you can make it look pretty decent. Phones have a ton of intelligence built into them. If a camera had the same technology sure the camera might get a better shot . I am more of a believer in a true camera over a phone's camera but, I know times are changing and some phone's cameras have gotten some nice shots.

@@marcel9568 lol I just realized you asked specifically about the iPhone 6s . I honestly can't answer that because I'm a poor Android user that does not care for iPhones. So sorry I can't speak on it but, I'm sure when it came out people on KZbin and other places used it for their projects. I have gotten decent videos and pictures from my android phones and the small sensor in the Sony zv1 . I now shoot pixel 6 pro, Fuji X-S10, XH2s and recently acquired a Sony a7 iv for reasons other than sensor size.

@@marcel9568 idk about your particular phone model, but I will say that if the Pentax Q system were still around and expanded since it ended awhile ago, I would absolutely buy into it. The sensors there are the size of smartphone sensors but the lenses and image processing are so much better than what you get from current smartphones today.

i think om-1 is absolutely great but its just too expensive, by that i mean at that price range there are so many other equally great crop sensor or even full-frame cameras to pic from. its even more expensive than the z6ii where i live and i just have a very very hard time justifying a 20 mp m43 camera when i have so many other options. its great but in my opinion its just too expensive

The om 1 is the flagship camera much like the z9 as the flagship of Nikon which is also expensive relative to other FF bodies. One advantage of the m43 system is the wide selection of great but cheap lenses so in a sense the whole package will be cheaper than its full frame counterpart
@paulthomas8986

I have the Z6II and what is really annoying is that the camera still has banding in the shadows when you push the dynamic range. You can find a used OM-1 for $1400-$1600. That is what I did. The Olympus lenses are exceptional, and if you really want a versatile travel/take anywhere kit you can not match micro 4/3rd's

@@kevinreyes6778 yeah i am not saying its bad or not a flag ship, just at that price there are other ff options that might have some distinct advantages over the om-1. im jusy saying at that price there's other options. plus that is not mentioning the lense quality only how big the lense is. an z 24-70 f2.8 is going to be bigger absolutly but it might also have better sharpness too

@@paulthomas8986 yeah i am Nikon (z6ii and z9) shooter too but due to the autofocus i switched to Fujifilm and it is great ever since. but i would still argue in most cases nikon lenses have better image quality than both fuji and om system

It is not too expensive if you consider the gain you get in practice. And do not forget that mFT- sensors are advantageous in many situations: You get more depth of field without the need to stop down the lens, so you can take pictures mostly at base ISO.

The "full frame cult" is pretty dumb. Try to replace some of the small but powerful lenses on smaller systems on full frame and you'll be disappointed. My 70-300 on Fuji is amazing and it is less than 600g. I doubt you can get a 100-450mm lens on full frame that is as low weight. Its a lens I almost always wanna take with me because of how powerful it is and how light it is. And I am sure there are even more drastic examples than that on m43!
