Newer cameras are expensive and now only offer incremental improvements. These improvements are often not even used by many photographers. It therefore makes good sense to revisit older cameras. We've had core features like IBIS and PDAF autofocus in the Olympus lineup since June 2018. Cameras from "way back then" should still be considered by those who can't or don't want to pay for newer versions. I recently bought a Canon 5DMKIII for a song and an Olympus OMD-EM10 MKIII. The Olympus has excellent picture quality and 4K video. Older cameras are the way to go!

I'm hopeful that more people will realize that MFT is where "all of the lines intersect," providing the best balance of performance, portability, features, and value among all current formats. Bridge cameras (like my FZ1000 and the Sony RX10 iii/iv) are an even better value, and honestly, they're way more camera than most of us need most of the time to produce great prints (the only real photos). But, if you want to go wider or longer, you'll obviously need an ILC. That's why I have a G9 and G9M2 with eight lenses (covering 12-800mm EFL), although I don't have a 12-60. That would be very versatile for street/travel use (I carry my whole kit virtually everywhere, but it would be nice not to have to change lenses so often), so I'm considering either the Lumix or Leica version. I love my other Leica lenses, but how much is 0.7-1 stop really worth in this case? I'll check out your video comparison to help me decide!

I recently got an E-M5 MkII as a replacement for my E-M5 MkI which starts to fail. While the MkII doesn't look like a big upgrade from the MkI on paper, it is a HUGE step up. I just wish I had the MkII much earlier. It feels and handles so much different from the E-M5 MkI and feels like a baby E-M1. It has far more features, much more function buttons.... it's such a joy to use.

Still got mine, after buying used em1 mk2 then mk3 because it was better value than getting a new (at the time) em5 mk3 to replace the older em5 mk2. I can’t bare to part with it even though I’ve been thinking about picking up an OM5 to replace it. Something about that metal body that I prefer over the newer plastic models…waiting to see if a newer OM5 mk2 might sway me to upgrade 😁

I do enjoy Matti’s videos, he comes across as such an amiable guy. I have come to the conclusion that photography equipment is simply a matter of marketing. If you just like taking snaps then you are steered towards the best mobile camera. If you are a professional you are steered towards full frame with all the gimmicks and if you are an enthusiast you just keep buying and buying. For years I have been in this latter category when really photography is all about the image and the light for which a basic camera is perfectly adequate, Most of us don’t really need IBIS, we don’t need very fast shutter speeds, we don’t need enormously high ISOs, or indeed weather sealing. We just need to find great subjects, super light and comfortable shoes to take us around with our cameras.

I have OM5 with 12-45, 25mm 1.8 and 45mm 1.8. Love all of the lenses. I was also considering leica 25mm 1.4 and 15mm 1.7. I believe there will be OM5 mark II with OM1 hardware. They need to do it, can't offer just one "new" camera. In fact OM haven't offer any completely new camera to us yet. OM1 (I +II) is just old Olympus development, OM5 too...

I just bought a MINT copy of the E-M5ii. I love the all metal body and simplicity of it. It's compact and I got it with the grip and battery extender for under $500. I already have an OM-1, E-M1iii, Pen-F, E-P5, and E-PL9, so the E-M5ii might be excessive, but I enjoy using it.

Same with Aleksi. Couple years ago I thought M43 was on the way out and FF was the future because it's becoming quite cheap. I do like the fact that FF is affordable with high quality now especially with the Z5 or the R8 offerings. But there is always something about the M43 that's quite special, even after my adventure with the Nikon FF or the Sony.

Gx9 is still selling used for around $800+ on MPB, used Olympus Pen f around $1200. OM5 new is around $900 new sometimes net of rebates, it does appear to be quite a good camera, but was just an incremental upgrade over the Em5iii. Folks I know who use tend to love it, mostly for travel and an EDC. Nice conversion guys! Like Matti would love to see a new small LUMIX.

I love MFT. I keep eyeing Nikon Z5 and may eventuakly get one (used) to try FF, but at the end of the day I love lenses like the 20mm f/1.4 and they give a good balance of DoF flexibility and letting in enough light to offset the poorer performance at high ISO. And honestly the newer post software is ao good with noise that low-light perfirmance is becoming less important. I should be hooy with what I have and look at new lenses to expand my shooting possibilities instead of new bodies/systems. I do wish for an om-5ii or a GX10 (or maybe PEN-F). The GX8 was wonderful but would like something that performs on par in terms of IQ with OM-1 or G9ii.

Small for Travel and Walk-around is the strength of u4/3. They already have fantastic lenses therefore now is the time to bring out the likes of the E-M10 and GX9 with the latest (G9II) sensor at a reasonable price. To price at, or higher, than APS-C or FF will/would cause market place failure.

It is always good to see you out with your GX9! My GX9 is still going strong, the IBIS is working for me 🙂 I think the price for a new mid-range m43 camera has to be near 1100 because it is difficult to compete with the Fuji and Sony alternatives. Panasonic have undoubtedly lost sales due to not having a lower end model. Ok, I know the G100 is there but it has no IBIS, it was a step back from GX and the G90 models. Let's hope for a GX9 II soon. They have a few months before Fuji release the XE5 in 2025. I bet it has IBIS. If it does, it will match the GX9. Maybe time to switch systems? This is the problem Pany has. They are missing sales and pushing customers away.

It doesn’t win though. The lens are smaller because they have smaller physical aperture and smaller entrance pupils. For the equivalent entrance pupil vs full frame - it’s the same size lense and more expensive. The economics of MFT is really gone.

Olympus still need to prove they still have the capability to actually build new substantive products. We've seen either pre-split products, or minor updates to existing hardware, along with some rebodied 3rd party lenses. It doesn't build confidence. My EM5 mk3 is still a great camera, I'm in no hurry for anything new, but right not I'm not sure we'll ever see a replacement. A lumix gx10 would be nice to see, the S9 really didn't make sense to me (i guess they wanted a lightweight l-mount).

The E-M5ii is a lovely stills camera but I originally got it hoping to use it as B-Cam to my GH4. The battery grips do give it a headphone out. It can only shoot FHD not UHD (4K) and after a short while the sensor gets hot turning the footage magenta, this is mentioned in its manual. It is currently wearing the Leica 25/1.4 with its awkward won't reverse square hood but I had to trade my first 25/1.4 to get the Lumix G7 to be the B-Cam, a job the G7 does well. The G7 is about as versatile as the E-M5ii but the E-M5ii has better haptics. You ask which is my favourite MFT. That is hard to chose but the one I will grab and go would be the tiny E-PL7, with the VF4, loaded with the Lumix PZ14-42 and carrying the little PZ45-175. Having had the 12-32 on the GM1 (gone) and the 14-42EZ on the E-PL1 (gone), the PZ14-42 is by some way the best pancake power zoom. My newest camera is the Lumix G9. I got that to handle the PL100-400 for wildlife, but the latest offerings are not enticing me. What I would like is a small-form camera with an all metal body, tilt monitor, and LVF.

I saw comments on the G9 and G9 mk2 about the size of the camera on other sites, they fit my large hands well, ergonomic, My comment is that when i used the 100 - 400 on my smaller bodied g series, there was an imbalance, however when using g9 with smaller sized lenses, Primes 9mm 25 mm etc, it they are perfect, I myself would prefer that M43 bodies keep the larger size because its easier to have a slightly heavier camera when outdoor with a bit of wind, I know ita not on this post but pause for thought, thanks, Colin James Inglis.

@Aleksilausti 6 күн бұрын
I also personally think there is certainly a place for larger MFT bodies also. For example the G9II is not in any way too big in my opinion and feels just right in the hands. Also it is 80 grams lighter than the S5II although they share the same chassis. Together with a befitting lens it is a really nice and ergonomic combination.
@campbell510
@campbell510 5 күн бұрын
The larger MFT bodies are fine for a variety of use cases. To complete the lineup though, Panasonic really should bring out a smaller rangefinder style camera with phase detect autofocus, good IBIS, solid but maybe not top spec video, and ideally the 25mp sensor. And a viewfinder. It would be a great travel and street photography camera. OM could do something similar with a Pen F update. Those cameras would have a lot of takers if they could price them reasonably (a decent amount under the G9ii and OM1), I think, and quieten much of the criticism that the manufacturers and the system gets.

I agree that 1,100 is an unrealistic price point for a new camera, but I also think there is a difference between what people wish for vs what they will buy. I don't have a problem with 1,800 for a new m4/3 camera that has what a want (basically a gx9ii but perhaps with a gx80-sized body). As you say, compactness is the strength of m4/3 and I think the companies really hurt themselves by making ever-larger cameras. Just look at the success of Ricoh GR3/x. I know, I have them, too. I would like a GR3 HDF but you can't get one. They sell out. That could have been a Panasonic/Olympus market share.

We need a m43 that fits in our pockets. A lumix GM styled perhaps. A few millimeters less in width than GM1, with a body cap lens, a pop-up evf and rearrange the buttons and dials a bit for ergonomics if possible. If it fits in your pocket, the it can challenge the GRIIIx. Lumix could add the LUT feature to compete against Fuji's simulations. Also the softness of a body cap lens can give you the same 'filmic' look as an old ccd point & shoot.😅 The best thing is, being m43 there is always a great lens out there that feels just right, regardless of your style.

Cheers Matti, it’s Sean in Atlanta! It’s great to see you and Alexi out and about with your micro 4/3 cameras. I mentioned to you a couple weeks ago that I bought a Nikon Z5 and I pretty much keep my 40 mm lens on it. Unlike you, I just purchased a brand-new Olympus EM5 M III and paid $600 for it, brand new! The guy was asking $700 and I made a silly offer thinking he would not accept it and he did so I had to buy it! Haha, be careful what you wish for right? I think your buddy should start his own channel because I will subscribe to it. I hope you are well and I envy you having to wear a jacket at the end of June because here in Atlanta, it’s nearly 100°F… Sean

I would say that my EM-5III is easily the best handling camera I have. My small hands fit nicely. Here (N.E. England) the weather has suddenly changed from 12 C and rain to 20+ and sunshine, so my favourite lens is the Oly 60mm Macro now that I can get low down among the wild flowers. I can't see that there can be any worthwhile improvements to MFT for my sort of photography, These days cameras 'need' esoteric video modes which are of no interest to me. I have a few other cameras. My X-H2 has a lovely viewfinder but it's so big. I'm starting to use my LX100 again, I like the exposure comp knob which I prefer to an ISO knob which other 'traditional' cameras have. I'm not planning to buy anything new, the cameras I have are good enough.

I love my GX9. It came with the 12-60 kit lens. As I already have the PL12-60 I was going to sell the kit lens to lower the price of the body. Turns out I really like this lens. I frequently bring the 12-60 along with the PL15 lens. The M43 gods are punishing me. I wanted to try a full frame camera. I was seduced by the autofocus raves about the S5ii. The PDAF is rubbish. It only focused about 70% of the time. I’m going back to the contrast based DFD. It may not be the fastest but it does lock onto the subject. I’m selling the camera to some other sucker and return to M43 bodies. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

The GX-9 may be the end. It has great specs for a MFT camera for travel or street photography. Looks and works great with the Leica 15mm lens. I still use some Olympus cameras and lenses as well on the street. After buying the Nikon Z5, the future for me, at this time, is leaning towards going mostly into Nikon again. Might even get a Z50 one fine day. I must admit the Ricoh Gr IIIx is interesting. I am pretty impressed so far with the Nikon Z5 + 40mm combo I have been using, though the focusing seems to be slightly slower than using MFT -- depending on lenses used, of course. The 50mm Nikkor f1.8 from what I have read, is sharp, but is that size of lens and weight worth it to carry about on the street? For years now I have been using only a wrist strap. For heavier gear, is the old shoulder strap a better choice. The straps, it seems, can get in the way --- what ya think? MFT future, I think is very uncertain, though many of use have more than one MFT and many lenses, thus it lives for use, for 3,5, maybe 10 yrs. more? - Loren

Thank you for an other very good video, nice to see Aleksi again, yes he should start a youtube channel, he does not need to do as many videos as you Matti. If I should have a new (future) MTF Camera, then first of all, it has to be VERY compact ! I do not want a low end or medium price range MTF camera, II want a High end MTF Camera, with a big EVF in the corner with high resolution (at least 5.8 mega dots) and very good magnification, easy to do manual operating of shutter and ISO, easy menu settings and custom settings. I do not care about the backside screen, it can be small, cheap and non-articulating. There also has to be new compact High end Lenses. OM System and/or Panasonic could also be first with a Camera in style with Contax T (first version !) or Minox 35 ML with an EVF, THAT will be a Camera I will buy !

If I had joined you two on that photo walk, I would have chosen my Panasonic GM5 with Pana/Leica 15/1.7 and Pana/Leica 45/2.8 macro with my GM1. Too bad the prices of the two cameras have now gone sky high on eBay. About $1000 for the GM5 and close to half that for the GM1. I also have the Oly Pen-F, they are also going up in price on eBay.

@@Aleksilausti Don't underestimate the GM1. I've used it for portraits with the Pana/Leica 45/2.8. That lens has VR and GM1 has a bigger screen. That fits in my palm, then I can see the subject and wait for the moment. Perfect when photographing people who don't like being taken pictures of.

Why your GX9 IBIS was broken? It was just a 5-year-old camera as you said, not that old. We know that the DSLR camera shutter can die. What a surprise that mirrorless cameras also can die because of the IBIS (vibrating too much)?

Lots of complaining about MFT costs....the latest FF bodies by Sony amd Nikon that get fawning reviews are WAY out of my price range. Then throw in the higher lens costs and I dont find FF systems very cost effective for advanced amateurs. I got into MFT late last year after decades with Nikon DSLRs. I was planning to go into Nikon Z series cameras but the body and lens costs were too much for me. I saw how relatively inexpensive and capable MFT gear was on the used market and it was an easy decision after that.

Matti, If the average consumer wants to pay in Europe around €1100,- then it will be difficult for m43 gets enough revenue in a complcted market with a lot of FF and APS-C camera around that price. The Fuji X-S20 is around the price, where the previous X-S10 has allready dropped under €1000,-. I find it a pity that people attack you when you make this type of vdeo, when you point that m43 is strugling and why. Seems many need to be feeling good.
