I've owned two of these wonderful XJs, both 2008 models. They are fantastic and reliable automobiles. The only problem I ever had was the air shocks going bad on the front end of one of the two. I would recommend this model to anyone wanting comfort, luxury and decent fuel economy.

These older Jags are more streamlined and easier on the eye than the newer ones, the XJ6 4.2 was my all time favourite Jag and I was lucky enough to drive one of the first off the line many years ago, simply wonderful to slide into that almost "cockpit" like driving seat. The guy who owned it paid I believe about 400 GBP over the top in those days to get it early and it was well worth it. A good Jag has been looked after and serviced regularly and all the issues ironed out as they arise and will last for many years Thanks for another great review Bill..

@@hernandocortez6351 I had a 2003 S type with all the updates including sat nav as seen here. Fantastic car and a lot for your buck. Cruise at 100 all day if you wanted to. Never had any issues with cam belt. Never drank oil at all. Pretty sporty and I still like the look today. I had 165k miles on it before I sold her on. Great paint jobs on these btw. Much more micron depth of gelcoat too. It's a Jag, a touch of class in an understated way. What Bill says here is right on the money. I was born and bred in the City of Coventry so I know jags. Good luck!

Depends on model, but the hoods / Trunk lids were aluminium I believe for lightness. Gelcoat was usually 50 microns but Jags were commonly nearer 90 or 100 microns. But whatever, I'd buy another without hesitation if it had been looked after.

I recently picked up a 2004 Jaguar XJ8 and one of the reasons for the purchase was one Bill's previous videos on the XJ8s. Loved his description on the car and how it looks/drives/makes you feel when you drive it. I absolutely love my XJ8 and I daily the car. I own the 2007 vanden plas. So far I replaced the air suspension w shocks, replaced a cracked coolant reservoir, a bad windshield wiper blade and a battery at 160,000 miles. Other than that it still drives like a mean machine.

I bought this exact car in 2012, loaded with the TV screens in the back and DVD in the trunk, same millage too, 106K. While I did spend as much in repairs as what I paid for the car, I actually improved the car and there's stuff that has to be replaced after 100K. At that point replace the air shocks. To me they are a 100K part and I had one explode on me. After 100K an occasional coil (coil over plugs) will fail, very minor issue. Mine had a very small electrical leak that never really got resolved. A rear door electric window went out, the ground wire connection failed. My mechanic repaired it in 15 minutes, didn't even charge me. Weaknesses: It has a 5 hose plastic coolant connector that gets hot and fails prematurely. It is located under the intake manifold and thus expensive to repair/replace. The electronic parking brake is operated with a motor, it has cheap nylon gears that strip and brake, they all do. It was a daily driver for me and it is a reliable car. I also made 7 trips to Chicago in it, 1,200 miles each. 30 miles/Gal., cruise set at 70. Never got tired on those trips, fantastic comfort and luxury. You can drive this car like a Cadillac or like a BMW 5 series (which I also owned, I prefer the Jag...a lot). The light weight makes it sporty, I was once in an ""Oh shit"" situation and had to make a very sharp turn at 65 M/hr. The tires squealed but the Jag stayed glued and certain feeling through the turn. I also had 19" wheels. When it came out performance figures were equal to BMW 745i which it competed with. It is a very long car, looks deceive, when sitting next to an F150 or Silverado pick-up truck it is almost the same length. The car has just a few cheap Ford appointments, the window buttons. Contrary to what Bill said, the engine is Jaguar designed but built by a Japanese custom engine manufacturer. I want this car back but it is not the right time for me. This car (up to 2008) is the last Jaguar that looks like a Jaguar, the new ones look like a Lexus 460 and BMW 7. You do get all the smiles and nods and ALL WOMEN LOVE THIS CAR, much more than a German car, they see the sexy lines. The car (to me) is a dream to drive.

I'm so glad you did this video. I had a VP (smug eh) and I loved that car. I tested the competition and bought the Jag. It was more fun to drive. I didn't want the equivalent dashboard technology of an F-111 fighter jet I just wanted a fun comfortable car to drive, and it sure was. Throwing that bad boy on a country road was a blast. Funny story. I was a young guy then, in the mid-30s. Anyway, my car was black with the rose or biscuit interior which I thought was striking. OK, my wife picked the color. Anyway, we went to dinner one night and valeted the car. When we came out I told the kid "the black Jag". The kid laughed at me. Apparently, a couple of people before us jokingly said it was theirs. Take that Mercedes-Benz!! Great car thanks for reviewing it.

As the owner of an XJ8 4.2, an XJ6 1988 vintage, a 1995 XJ12, and a 1995 XJS 6.0 V12 I can say they are quite reliable. Like any car, there are areas of concern and little maintenance things you need to know., such as you must use "jiggle pin" thermostats in the V12s. I have driven all of them on long road trips. Amazingly, my XJ40 (`88 XJ6) was extremely reliable. I am impressed with your knowledge of Jaguar and other marques. Like you, I am disgusted by the styling of current Jaguar saloons, and I loath the Maytag dryer knob shift controls.

She's got 223 000 miles on her,and, her "restricted performance" message light just came on a week ago. I've had her for 7 years. I've driven her to California and back twice. (I live in Chicago) She is truly a GRAND DAME out on the road. A guy in Vegas offered me 15 grand for her while driving through Nevada. I smiled with pride as I politely rejected his offer. I have had no problems with her, until now, during our 7 year relationship. Everything you've said about this Jaguar is so, much the truth. I even got a history lesson out of your video. You've got a new sub, Bill. My pride in my baby has only been enhanced by this video. I mean seeing my baby on your video was truly, a thing. Keep up the good work, Bill. I have a 2006 base XJ8 that used to belong to my mom, it has about 40,000 miles right now. For the air suspension I had to replace the front shocks, the originals were $1000.00 each so I got Arnott's that were half the price. I passed on doing the suspension conversion to non air suspension. This last summer I had to change the air compressor. Biggest problem or most costliest was the A/C drain getting clogged up and water leaking into the cabin. The dashboard had to be removed to clear the clog. A couple of years ago it had a tiny coolant leak that was difficult to find, turned out to be the intake manifold gasket went bad. The engine and transmission have never given any trouble. It's had some minor issues when it was under warranty such as a check engine light (not due to a loose gas cap) and the navigation system saying we were out driving on the ocean. A quirk of this car is that when the air compressor comes on at 30 MPH you feel the vibration, it works for a couple of minutes until it fills the system with air or it stops if you go under 30 MPH. I would recommend this car to anyone, just know that even with low miles the rubbers get old and some repairs will still be needed.

Wow! I just bought an 04 XJR, 140K I absolutely love it.. Ive had to replace the valve cover gaskets and 2 coils so far. I believe I may have to replace the water pump. Its some coolant fluid occasionally under the car in the front engine area. And I believe it may be the sound of the bearings inside the water pump or possibly just a worn pulley. But all my levels look fine and no warning lights.. Outside of that the car drives good and its an amazing feeling step on the pedal and open her up, on the highway.. Any suggestions on the issues I stated. Oh also Im having a few electrical gremlins, the front dome lights and vanity mirrors don't work. Rear top break light only seems to work when its extremely cold.. Also I plan to possibly convert the air suspension. Front shocks work sometimes. And my adaptive cruise light is on says its not functioning.. I want to get the car to tip top shape, as much as possible. I knew it wasn't going to perfect. And it was sitting for awhile.. But so far I absolutely love the car. This is my first Jag. Any information that you so kindly could give me. Would be appreciated it. Thanks in advance.

This is the last beautiful Jaguar. EVERYTHING after this is, umm, generic. The magazine critics were TOTALLY wrong at the time concerning its styling. Jaguar and its string pullers should've stuck with this traditional 3 box shape with round lighting. Of course, and sadly, a SUV was needed. This car should've continued on with an eye toward pure luxury, refinement, and reliability. Reliability really is the Achilles heel concerning Jaguar.

I own one of these and it is my daily driver. My experience after 210.000 Km is that properly maintained, this Jaguar is the most reliable car I have ever owned. When it comes to cost of ownership, it is definitely more expensive than that of a Toyota, but it is still pretty reasonable. I also have read many horror stories about the air suspension. Mine has never failed and offers such balance and stability that is worth the cost of fixing it if eventually breaks.

@@danielaaron2060 When driving you should not hear any noise from the suspension. If you do, chances are that the compressor is beginning to wear out. Something that ends up happening with time, but fortunately new compressors are not that expensive.

These were great cars in their own right, however, did lose a bit of the "special" feel of the prior chassis. WAAAY more reliable than a similar year 7 series, but that's not a hard one to beat. Love the channel, grew up in the car business, and could tell you're a real "car guy", unlike most of the dealers you run into these days.

First thing I did when I acquired my 2004 Jaguar XJ8 it had 206,000 Miles on it. First thing I tackled was it had faulty suspension code coming up, "very common" but the suspension worked fine and the prior gentleman put one new air bag on the front but they weren't able to clear the code because the EMS module or whatever they're called was bad. But what I did was I just went all analog with it and bought a whole new suspension kit on eBay and got rid of all of the bags and they give you a little electronic box to bypass that signal and you will never have any problems with that suspension again, but of course now you have just one suspension ride there are no adjustments you can make or the car can make. But to be honest it has not taken away from the smooth cloudy ride you get with these cars. It still has a super sweet ride.....and you will never have to worry about any airbag failures in the future. This is a great car to keep long-term being it is all aluminum and will not rust on you. There is still brand new suspension parts they make if they ever go bad and there are a lot of these cars out there that are great parts cars that people dissect and sell anything and everything off these cars. These cars to me still had great personalities, the real Veneer Wood interior and different wood patterns on every one of them just gives them their own personality. A big percentage of these cars were put together by hand and not by machine. It's just something you do not see with today's car manufacturers. If it could be done by a machine it will be done by a machine.... they are absolutely future classics, without a doubt

I’m glad you did a video on these, I am NOT a fan of most British cars having worked at a shop that specializes in them. The two exceptions (well maybe 2½) are this Jag and the 2 door convertible of the same vintage. Very well made with as you said much more personality than what the Axis were producing. Funny you mentioned it, the only expensive issue that was commonplace were on those models equipped with air ride suspension, there is a aftermarket coil over swap kit but it does ruin the ride and carrying 5 people once you had put it in was a thing of the past unless you like sparks with your driveways.

I always love listening to this guy. He watches car history that which is haute couture is to fashion. And his personality/character is the same as the persnickety types that do fashion reviews, just on another subject in our epicurian pleonasm. Also I lived in Sarasota for a while and these outdoor bits (all I've seen are the same setting), remind me of every single normal morning there. FWIW, I am not the same kind of person he (this narrator) is, and don't even really like hanging with this sort of guy. In addition, he would likely dislike my character far more! *unless he was needing rescue* But its sooo wonderful that he says ANYTHING he feels in the moment. 99% of men filter this, and its so important when picking through the relevant details. This is not the perspective of engineers debugging the steering, brakes, or whatever. Its actually a SKILL to be able to take it all in as a whole. That said, sometimes I just want a good look at stuff, on a nice clean example. So yeah, I skip all the opening. Or maybe I am returning to the video for the 3rd time for that. So don't take it as a failure that the video is peaky within viewing. On this car, I am hearing this model was (you say, the "last jaguar I still like") a compromise and badge engineering at the chassis level. The prior model was the X300 chassis, the last pure Jaguar technically. Not really sure whether this makes it worse than a 2002, but after this series, ending 08ish, jaguar was gone. Agree on value. This is supply demand. The car (and X300 before) was a strong value at the 80k price. The average buyer was 80% male with an average age of 63! So most were not ever driven at the average level, were garaged, and perfectly serviced. 90% were mint coming from 1st owner. A minority today are ragged, and just now good for some parts. Note on Vanden Plas (and others).. these were (with intro year exception) offered in two wheelbase lengths. Vanden Plas was another way to say, long wheelbase. The extra length of 4-6 inches is simply added to rear seat legroom, and longer rear doors. Separately, the long wheelbase adds an "L" to the base model, but without interior changes. About 3/4 of the "Daimler" builds are long wheelbase. Sorta like a short limo for UK, Tony Blair is said to have preferred this car.

I hit the thumbs up for this video. I enjoyed pointing out how good and reliable Jaguars had become by the year of this one to a guy who had 2 Mercedes cars back in the 80's that were the opposite and got him stranded too many times until he bought Lexes starting in 1997. And that was even though he ended up saying that to even consider owning a Jag was nothing short of madness and I didn't hear anything from him after sharing how well proven these X350s and S-Types and XK8s have turned out to be. Besides, I did go along with him by telling him that these Jags proved 2nd only to Lexes, his choice of make, in reliability. I also recently had someone tell me that that V8 itself was designed by Jaguar in Coventry before Ford sold the plant and that in the 1970s-80's Jaguar used more parts from general motors, most obvious being GM's automatics being hooked up to Jag's V-12s, more than what the X350 generation and XK8s used from Ford and that the X-Type and S-Type were still more Ford. Well I wouldn't have anything other than Chevy or GMC for trucks, anyway.

My neighbor bought one of these a couple years ago, gorgeous car but it was broken down within a few months of him purchasing it... I don't know what the issue was but it must've been something expensive because he got rid of it rather than fixing it. Nice driving cars though, I worked for a Hertz location in Hawaii that rented them when they were brand new and I always liked shuttling them around. Great interior, smooth ride and a nice punchy V8 engine. I'd drive one if I had the spare money to maintain it.

my mother had an old XJS (before ford - the 5.3 v12s). We were cheap people - she bought it used, drove it for a while and moved on. When ford bought jaguar, the cars probably improved, but they just started to look like any other car. XJS has a fantastic ability to drain the battery if it wasn't being driven every day, as well as a real talent for making an enormous amount of heat under the hood. More heat than power - transmission was crap, too. But it felt as solid as riding in a tank.

X350 is the most underrated xj of them all. take in down a twisty road it handles better than a Subaru biggest problem with them are bushes you'll get 34 mpg UK on long run from the v8

Lots of Jag history... where did the narrator get such a rich list of facts ? This content rich video will make any Jag lover happy. This car is one of the most beautiful premium sedans of the early 2000's. Every bit as beautiful as the later 2000's Maserati Quattroporte.

Bill, you know a LOT about Jags - but the X350 never had the 4 liter. It always came with a 3.0 V6, a 3.5 V8 or a 4.2 V8 - or the V6 diesel. Never had the problems with the Nikasil cilinders (couldn't handle sulphur in cheap fuel), never had the plastic timing-chain tensioners. The 4 liter was in the X308 and the early XK(r) and the Mk1 S-type. But if they stil have Nikasil they'll give nor problems, probably never had any sulphur-fuel (just premium). The later 4.0 got no more Nikasil, and nowadays that amount of sulphur is no longer allowed in fuel. So that problem is "fixed"... The tensioners remain a problem but can be replaced by the later ones. Once fixed, they are as good as the 4.2s. On that gearbox, Jag said they were "sealed for life", but really, if you want them to last - get a flush (and new filter) and make sure it is done right. Mercedes use the same gearbox, and they service them, they last 400k miles. Now how would that be that a Jag one doesn't. Duh. If I'd live in the USA I'd certainly go buy a Jag from your place, you have some great ones. I'd also help you get rid of those damn birds. ;-)

"JagYOUuh" if you want to sound pompass. I had an '05 XJ8L - I miss it terribly. Comfortable, quiet, surprisingly quick and fuel efficient. 80k mostly trouble free miles. Had the suspension air compressor replaced under warranty, a thermostat, and the bleed return line on the coolant reservoir will fatigue, crack and start to leak every 70k or so. '06 got ventilated seats and double pane windows for extra quietness. I would have another one in a minute. The air compressors tend to have a higher failure rate in colder climates. All of the aluminum XJ8s have the 4.2 V8 and 6 speed auto. The 4.2 is a solid unit. Don't buy anything with the 4.0 V8, early ones have Nikisil plated cylinders. The plating is eaten by the high sulfur fuels available in the US leading to excessive blowby and low compression. The 4,0 got iron liners in '01 or '02 but they have weak timing chains and tensioners which lead to bent valves if you are lucky and a destroyed engine if you aren't. The 4.0 inline 6 is essentially bomb proof.

I was at the launch for this car. on the road test with a Jag hired driver to show us, the sales reps the cars and pump them/us up. I asked him why the BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus were so much quieter.. He told me this story. He said: At the Lexus factory in Japan, the fit/finish engineers have a test. Friday night they lock a cat in a test car. If on Monday morning, they return to find the cat dead, than it’s ready for production. The Jag team got wind of this. He said they went back the Castle Bromwich to perform the same test that Friday. When they returned to the car Monday morning, the cat was gone. I’m sure it’s an old one but I thought it was a great one in 2003. Man, where did the years go!

when I was young and suggestive, my wife was totally taken with the XJ6 our insurance guy drove up in. She asked if it was for sale. I bought the damned thing like a fool. It immediately blew it's head gasket which cost me close to 2K to fix. When I looked at it I was amazed at how pretty it was. Jaguar knew what shit they built around 83 so it better be beautiful. But to be fair it was an old car that hadn't been cared for properly. After that I was afraid to drive it and gave it away as I could always smell oil - probably from the leaky head gasket that I repaired now that I think of it some 31 years later.
