I used this on my SunJoe 24v reel mower as well. Gotta say, it worked remarkably well. I cleaned the base with alcohol prior to sticking the adhesive strip on, which I only lift a bit of the backer off and put in place and slide the rest off as I press it into place, and stepped the reel down very gradually between sharpening runs. Only making light contact with the abrasive. Definitely easier with a reel that spins on its own power, but it was shiny and sharp as ever, and only barely showed wear on the sand paper, just a bit of powdered steel left behind. Not to mention, it really seemed to get the reel into round, where one of the blades was a bit deeper/taller than the rest on the SunJoe, probably on purpose. Not only was the reel very sharp, it seemed to really get rid of a lot of/nearly all of the washboarding when cutting. This is likely due to getting the reel evened out and SHARP. I also bought two so I could use the extra mounting clips to ensure it was tight against the whole of the bedknife. I suppose it might be better to get it professionally sharpened, but I'm sure the folks that can sharpen a reel would laugh at the cost of the sharpening nearly equaling the entire mower with battery etc... Not the case with the Hudson, but most places charge a hefty fee for sharpening these things. Gotta say, these cheap tool videos are very good, and gives folks a good look at something before buying it. 👍 Thank you for what you do to help us out!

I actually use 220 Grit sandpaper on my Allett before each use. Only takes a few minutes and keeps the blades clean and sharp. After each use hose down the blades and then use leaf blower to dry it off. Then apply a light spray of WD 40 silicone Blade stayed sharp

Striper, I’m thinking I’ll try one of those sandpaper sponges 🧽 for painting. That way I can have a flat surface to lightly sharpen each blade. I use a Greenworks manual and have no idea on how to sharpen it.
@Striperman2 жыл бұрын
@@themoistgreenorganic I have actually used that sponge as well but it just wasn't gritty enough. Amazon sells back lapping kits for manual reel mowers.

JP, is Greenphite not available for the DIY anymore?

This year we couldn’t be guaranteed one of the primary components so we had to remove it from the roster. However, a new sheriff in town called GreeneKick will be on the scene as a high K replacement very soin

Totally have that for my sunjoe reel mower. I saw some review saying the adhesive wasn’t good. I let the sandpaper sit over night and I had 3 or 4 spring clamps on it. Works great. Now thinking about using it on a my 20” mclane since no one around me sharpens these mowers.

I really wanted to reel mower to. Found a corded sunjoe reel mower for $80 on marketplace. However there are no aftermarket blades and bedknifes, even through the manufacturer. Then found a mclane with only “40hrs” on the engine for $300. I also snagged it up, 6 weeks later the gas mix with the oil and now engine is shot. Bought a “broken” ryobi cordless mower and gonna try to covert the mclane to eletric. Be careful reel mow can be addicting.

@@HClightdude I was looking at the mclane 25. But seems like there’s bugs in them that need to be worked out. I may just bite the bullet and spend a little extra on a nicer machine.

seems expensive for whst it is, i might try make one by mounting some abrasive stuff on a scrap of wood. it seems to have a curve to it, the curved dowel might work. or i'll just go over the blades with a sharpening stone or file.

I fail to see how this is easier or cheaper than lapping compound and a paintbrush.
@Lawncology2 жыл бұрын
This would be something different than lapping. It fits into the “grinding” category for when blades have Dulled beyond backslapping and you don’t want to cut further into your bed knife
@andy-the-gardener Жыл бұрын
backlapping does not sharpen blades, apparently, from what ive read it cannot repair a rounded off edge (although i think it must, to a degree, if its done long enough). this kit is a cheap n cheerful version of actual grinding the reel to create a sharper edge profile. no reason it wouldn't work as in principle its what the pros do, ie rotating the cylinder forwards? against a parallel abrasive surface. its a good idea, but a bit pricey
