The Havona solo is not only one of the best bass solos ever, not only one of the best solos in jazz ever, but simply one of the best solos of any instrument, any genre...period.

I'm willing to bet that Jaco composed that solo, as he did his solo for Teentown. That doesn't take anything away from his creativity.

@@doyourownresearch7297 I wasn't formally trained in music, either on guitar nor bass. I'm your typical seventies rock guy that switched to bass because I was the weakest guitarist in the band. The difference in my path was that I kept learning and by the end of the 1970's knew that Rock bass playing had devolved and that many guitar players who weren't all that swift themselves assumed and expected bassists only played roots, (I'm sorry for the run on sentence).

Tony said that he had just been interviewing Jaco. Like "Wow !! Really ?" or words to that effect. He signed me up to two years free subscription to his magazine. Thank you Tony. 👍 Nice guy.

I've been listening to music constantly since I was 4 (1984), played trumpet at 10, started playing bass at 20, and listened to tons and tons of a bunch of genres thru pop, rock, punk, disco, electronic over the decades, and specially prog rock, heavy metal AND jazz. All of this to say that Bright Size Life and Midwestern Dreams are two of the most beautifull songs I ever heard in my life.

I was a freshman in college in the music dept. playing the mighty doghouse. They let me use a 7/8 German bass they had. I’m only 5’8” and basically weigh nothing. That bass had a powerful sound though! Anyway it was the year that Jacos first solo record hit. All the jazz guys in the music department were blown away and flabbergasted at the same time. It was a come to Jesus moment for all of us bass players. Every once in awhile when I need my butt kicked, I put on some music that Jaco played on. Then I practice. I had a short stint in Nashville and was lucky to meet and play with some great people. Also recorded a bit. Jaco influenced all of us even if we tried to run away from it. Thank you for what you do. I’m digging it!

This came up and the title intrigued me as I'm a huge Metheny and Jaco fan not to mention a frustrated jazz guitarist. When I listened to Jaco play through that beautiful phrasing (which I've never heard before) I immediately thought of Metheny. It was the note choices that really stood out to me. i guess when we hear a sick line from jaco we accept it like 'well yeah, its jaco'. it is a bit shocking to hear he didnt write that masterpiece line but to me, amongst pat's long, long list of skills and accolades is his ability to write melodic lines like this. all my favorite tunes from pat have some amazing line like this that sucks me in (though usually on the guitar, and not at the end of the song!). i remember hearing pat say you could throw a garbage can down a flight of stairs and transpose it - its a melody. this guy thinks differently about melody then most of us, save perhaps the best song writers in the world.

Bright Size Life has been a long-standing favorite of mine and one of my favorite showcases of Jaco's tone and abilities (and also Joni Mitchell live album). I always wondered why this album, so harmonically and rhythmically rich and complex, wasn't more celebrated. Good to know that Pat Metheney composed the solo, and really fascinating about the melody being traced back through so many versions. Also, great to know about the legit chorus of bass tracks and his reasoning behind it. I always enjoy your channel and very much relate with your opinions on bass lines and players -- many of which I knew about, and also some that I never heard of. Keep up the great work! And while we're talking about Jaco, the video of him playing Three Views of a Secret with Toots... man... sooo good!

The power of a composed melody is *SERIOUSLY* underrated in jazz. Cats sometimes consider the melody as an afterthought…some mere ritual you’ve got to pay lip service to in order to get to the solos. You’ve got to get *inside* a tune in order to play the melody in a compelling way…you can’t fake it. This is why many jam sessions suck…cats mess up the melody and aren’t all playing in unison or with real feeling. Check out Wayne Shorter’s *“Nefertiti”* on Miles Davis’ LP of the same name…most of the track, the front line of Miles and Wayne simply play the melody…over and over…with very little “soloing” as most folks are accustomed to hearing in a jazz setting. It definitely stands out in Miles’ oeuvre as a unique tune (along with *“Pinocchio”* on the same LP) where solos take a backseat to a composed melody.

Awesome channel! Broadly speaking, I do not connect with everyone’s Jaco worshipping, his playing just does little for me; for example, Weather Report’s music was so much better and more dynamic with bassist Alphonso Johnson, and then became dull and impotent with the switch to Jaco. Birdland was their big hit but it’s a snooze compared to Black Market or American Tango (Vitous). Since I’m in the minority, I have to defer to the normies, but maybe give Percy Jones a listen, a fretless bassist who came before Jaco and offers better playing and musicianship, to my ears.

Great video! Paul is doing a great job of educating people about the way it is. He not only picks great material to choose from (JACO) but does the research to make sure it is correct. It definitely sounds like a Metheny melody without question. This was a big part of John Lennon's classic sound - singing the melody twice as everyone knows. There's nothing like the sound of the same Voice twice because it's a perfect match and makes it stand out more uniquely than say two people singing the same harmonies. Here Jaco's using the same technique, His voice - the bass - his DNA and only his - which makes it sounds so gorgeous! Beautiful playing Paul!

And in order to learn melodies, we must learn lyrics. I would challenge anyone to listen to instrumentalists to try to detect if they know the lyrics. Oftentimes when playing a melody, an instrumentalist will sound "off" and oftentimes that's because they have not studied the lyrics AKA the storytelling intention of the tune.

Yeah, I think Pat Metheny himself said so in the interview he did with Rick Beato, he asked Jaco to play this melody he once wrote and such.

His solo on Donna Lee was composed too, you can hear him play it verbatim on his album 'the Criteria session' ... recorded before his debut album.

An amazing guitar player who I also played with named Sawn lane said concerning Jaco... " its sad that society makes provision and supports people who have needs but never makes provision or takes care of People like Jaco who needed help in many other ways".. Insted he walked into a bar and was beaten by a bouncer... then later died.. WHat a sad way for someone so talented to die.

@@gravitydrums1391 Bro, you copy and pasted the same comment under every single comment.. If that is your idea of legitimate, you are likely mentally ill. Who in their right mind sits there, and copy and pastes the same comment 100 times under everyone's posts? Do you need attention that bad? My Father was the sound engineer for Joni Mitchell and Pat Matheny and we had the opportunity to play with many big names in the industry.. You see me on here bragging and begging for attention? 😔

Yeah he was about half the guitar player when he started playing in Burton's ensemble as when he left school studying with Gary Burton. He practiced like Charlie Parker with that intensity to get his voice together .
