Күн бұрын

2019 saw France experience its hottest June since records began. The French media dubbed it "an extreme weather event" a "killer heatwave" & warned people to stay indoors. We however had no choice than to motor through it and try to find some respite from the ever increasing temperatures on our boat. The conditions are insane and with no AC, we are suffering. With no prospect of cooling down, we make a break for the Atlantic ocean and try and cover as many miles as possible.
Hope you enjoy the episode!

Great to see the other side of life here in the canals, however, I'm not sure I'd like to dive on the prop in that water every time she fowls. So what's happening with looking for the perfect catamaran? Have you looked at any other makes that you like? Are you any closer to buying one? If you get one, how do you propose to come back and do these canals within the next 10 years? Any thoughts on those questions?

Antoine, I'm in no way able to afford any kind of boat, even a canoe right now, but if I was, Privilege tops my list. I watch Sailing Zatara, and they have a 585 which despite it's age, is in gorgeous condition. Above, I liked a 445 to Nick and Terysa which again, despite it's age, seems to be in wonderful shape. Privilege is the top, and only Catamaran, on my list when I win a big lottery and can afford to buy one. :)

When in bad heat with no ac, might consider a misting bottle. Just cheap spray bottle that sprays a mist, spray exposed areas and it will help cool you down. Especially if there is a breeze or fan. We have fans but no ac, so it's what we use.

I grew up in summer heat like that in Canada (yes, it does get that hot in places) with 98 percent humidity to boot. Loved it. I am with Nick. Once you get acclimated to the heat, anything below 30 seems chilly. Bundle up in the blankets and wear that jacket! The only thing taking away from the serene cruise is the sound of the engine churning away below. Which made me ask myself- how is the engine coping with the heat? And then! white smoke! Hope it's not anything serious.

When I was in Death Valley it could get up to 56 degrees easy. It's a dry heat (humidity about 0.25%) but still, it is so hot the air actually hurts where it touches your skin. That hot, it's beyond uncomfortable and starting into the painful territory. Also, you have to be careful, because you are losing a ton of water, even though you feel dry, you are still sweating like crazy, so you need over a gallon of water per day.

Great video. I just watched a video from a Canadian sailboat couple that went through the French canals. Must be a trend. Definitely now on the bucket list. A bit concerning that you had to scrap the bottom of your boat on some parts of the canal (If I heard that right, 70 cm!). Can't wait to see more, especially how you overcome some of the challenges, e.g. propeller/engine issues.
@sailingrubyrose

On the downstream side of the locks there’s often a sill created by the turbulence from the water gushing out- so the shallow patches don’t last very far and you can just plow through. But yes, big problems in the next episode....

I have noticed there are two groups of boat owners. (This is all tongue-in-cheek) Those who wear Ray Ban sunglasses and those who don't. Those who wear Ray Ban sunglasses have much nicer boats, and much bigger budgets. Those who don't have boats that barely float and a very small budget. I noticed Nick replaced his Ray Bans with another set. Terysa is always wearing Ray Bans. Each type of sailor is great to watch and brings something different and interesting to their videos.

Thanks, I enjoy your very inspiring videos, both from the oceans and on the channels. In a couple of your videos you have mentioned the atlantic coast as your favourite. Can you put that into a few words? Which coast shoreline/town do you refer to? Thanks again for the KZbin channel with many good hours of information and inspiration. Brian, DK

Thanks Brian, we love the French Atlantic coast and the islands: Belle Ile, ile de Ré and many many other islands. After that a very close second is Galicia in Spain. We will be sailing it all next season, So you’ll get a good view of the area

I was genuinely surprised at the heat you experienced. In Birmingham, Alabama, USA, our summer temps in '19 were in the mid-90s F (30s C) and we're on the same latitude as North Africa and the Sahara Desert! Was France getting the extreme heat across the Med from Africa?

Gotta be an old Englishmen as landlord! When i was at school, the newsagent at the top of the road closed for lunch everyday, just when trade picks up and also closed at 5.30pm with a London Underground station almost next door! Just when everybody is returning from work! Ha ha! Also they would only let school kids in one at a time, so we all went elsewhere! They also missed the morning rush by opening at 9am? When they retired, an Asian family took it over, was open 6am till 11pm and made a killing! Logic?

If you had it to do over again would you ship the mast by truck? It seems that the mast has been the biggest complication in negotiating the locks.
@sailingrubyrose
@sailingrubyrose 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, our first preference was to transport the mast by truck. Unfortunately the dates didn’t line up with the transport company. We’d definitely try and do that next time because, as you say, having the mast on deck was a pain.

Do they have to add water to the canals at their highest elevations or are they able to rely on runoff? I know it may have been abnormally hot but the canals do have something the Atlantic will never have. A tree to moor under. Thanks so much for this series as I would never have been able to experience this any other way.
@sailingrubyrose

I don’t think they have to pump in water- the canals are fed by the extensive river systems. Glad you’re enjoying the series!

I need to ask a couple of techie questions about your filming. Do you shoot your video footage at 30fps or 25fps? Do you edit your videos at 25 fps or 30fps? Somewhere there’s a mismatch and every time there’s movement I get a stutter every few frames which is typically caused by editing at a different frame rate to the footage. (Your trip looks amazing btw. So jealous). X
@sailingrubyrose
@sailingrubyrose 4 жыл бұрын
The stutter is actually caused by a flaw with the stabilisation of the camera. We have a new camera now, so hopefully the new episodes won’t have the same problem. Thanks for the feedback! Cheers.

I'd suggest your thermometer was correct. I live about 100km north of where you were and we had daily and night temperatures INSIDE with all doors open between 48 and 52 Deg Celcius. Just a point - it has been as hot as this before, Le Monde in Paris debunked the hysteria. It is super hot, but in the 1970's and 1911 it got t mid 50 deg cel. 70 000 odd died in a week just in Paris. I'll also add that mid 40's in summer for about a month is quite normal for us, a whole small freezer just for ice and ice popsicles for the dogs is a normal summer procedure for us... and I'm writing this as it is -2 degrees outside 😒

@@sailingrubyrose 70,000 died in 1911 in Paris alone from the heat which lasted for about 3 - 4 weeks, hit 57 on the mercury. France gets very hot, not every year but I'd say every summer we certainly have a three week period in my area in the Lot of 42 to 45 degrees, usually in June. Miserable since it lasts through to 3am or later. Oak trees and shade are a blessing.
