It's too bad that, after independence, Mexico was unable to make their new cities in the far north as stunning. Mexico City has a lot of great stuff done after independence, like Torre Latino, Paseo de La Reforma, the Paris-esque makeover of Roma (or Zona Rosa, either is still pretty though), and ultra modern Santa Fe, as well as Monterrey's skyscrapers. Getting hooked on imitations of american modernism since the 50s didnt help the cities though. Most Americans first impression of Mexico is Tijuana, which has some gritty charm i guess (btw i mean in terms of architecture, never been there, outside of street view).

Congratulations! I think this is one of the best (if not the best) video you've created thus far. Btw, I lived in Morelia for part of my childhood. Its infrastructure and construction is very reminiscent of that of Spain. It's one of the historic cities during Mexican independence and revolution. The state of Michoacán is nicknamed "the soul of Mexico" and I like to think that a part of that comes with the obvious heavy Spanish influence.

We were visiting the city of Guanajuato a few years ago on an extremely busy Sunday. There were tons of people everywhere when all of the sudden one of our children (our 3 year old back then) went missing. My wife and I started running the streets around the main plaza like crazy. I saw a Policeman and told him that my youngest daughter was missing and I gave him a quick description of her and of what she was wearing. He responded "we are already looking for another missing child, be patient!!". 5 minutes seemed like 5 Centuries....lol. Luckily we found her walking back to where we had left the car parked. We were actually with other family members and got disctracted for maybe a minute or two and that is when she "disappeared". It was a very freighting moment but thank God she was fine.

Mexico is a mix of different cultures, old world and new world. There's European, Amerindian, Middle Eastern, and African influences in the language, religion, architecture, and food. We speak Spanish, have Aztec facial features and eat shwarma tacos (aka al pastor). I think it's ok to make little comparisons since like I said Mexico is a mix of so many cultures. And great job on the video. My family is actually from GTO. To me it always looked more like Portugal or Spain not just in the style of the buildings, but also the landscape is very hilly and dry with desert shrubs.

Hi guys. Nice video. To be honest you're not the first visitors who find similarities between Guanajuato and Italy. You are correct. There are some similarities and if you check the history of the Spanish Empire during the 16-17th centuries you'll find the answer. To put it simply: in the 16th century a great part of what is now Italy was a province of the Spanish Empire just like Mexico. Spaniards were huge fans of Italian Renaissance so they implemented many cultural expressions of the Italian Renaissance in their American provinces, like architecture and the layout of cities. That matrix-like layout so characteristic of downtown Queretaro is a concept created by the Italians during the 16th century. So, I conclusion, every time you find a similarity between a Mexican colonial city and an Italian city is not the product of coincidence but history.
