( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta R-Line promises to pack quite a bit of value and sporty flavor, and it comes in at around $24,000 with a six-speed manual transmission. With its small turbocharged engine, is it the most fun car you can buy in the price range? Nathan takes this one out for a spin to find out.

I just bought the 2021 R-Line and I absolutely love it. It's a six speed manual transmission and equipped to the hilt! It's just sporty and zippy enough to be fun in town and on the highway. Rides and handles great. The R-Line is much much better equipped than a Civic at the same price point. I paid 25,000 out the door... impressive gas mileage, too! Great review! Thank you!

@@buildmorefarms1007 The Jetta R-Line is at the same price point as the Civic Sport. The R-Line came with a sun roof, heated front AND rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a standard six speed manual transmission, beautiful two tone leatherette seats and the best gas mileage for a non-hybrid vehicle, I get 45 mpg on the highway to work...and a bit better in eco mode if I drive like a good boy. It's also has more room inside, especially in the back seats. The ride and is exceptional. I also have a top of the line 2019 Honda Accord and my Jetta rides smoother. I love the Civic, it's a GREAT car, but I, personally, was more impressed with the Jetta. It feels more refined.

Just bought a used '19 Jetta SEL. It might not be the most impressive, but for the price VW made it all the car it could possibly be. It's comfortable, drive nice, gets good mileage, has the first car screen I've encountered that I halfway like, and gives you that go-ey feeling when you hit the gas around town.

And you can get a 2020 Civic SI for $25K. It has the 1.5L turbo you mentioned but that makes 54 more HP and 8 lb-ft more torque in a smaller car with an LSD to boot. Much better choice if you want a new car that is fun and practical in that price range. VWs can be decent cars but when things start to go wrong it can get expensive.

I think I met my doppelganger in "Madmatt". Totally agree - See avatar (lol) and the fact that I've been an avid driver of and proponent of manual transmission I'm a previous Civic Si owner and Ford owner before my Mazda6 purchase (manual and N/A) for a fun, reliable package. If I were to buy today, I'd have the Civic Si, Kia Forte and Mazda3 hatch all with manuals on my short list. For this car, I would have liked VW to use the old 5 cyl. engine tweaked with updates for better mpg (SkyActive it).
@garys2157
@garys2157 4 жыл бұрын
This car doesn't compete with the SI, the Jetta GLI is more comparable to the SI, it bests the Civic by 23 hp, and a large 66 more torque, they are close to the same size although the Jetta does weigh more.

@@garys2157 The title of the video implied that the Jetta R-Line is the most fun car you can buy for under $25K and I simply pointed out a car that is more fun while still being just as practical for around the same price. It doesn't matter that said car "doesn't compete" in the same category. I could come up with a lot of other cars that are more fun than the Jetta R-Line for around the same price, like the Elantra GT N Line. The Civic SI was just the first thing that came to mind.

I just picked up a 2021 Jetta R-Line. I really liked the clean lines and good interior. I was concerned about power and interior width as I'm a 6 footer and have broad shoulders...no issues there. It's a car, as Nate said, that is fun, quick, comfortable, has a smooth ride, yet is fun to drive. I live in the Chicago area and the cold weather package is great. I also got the optional monster mats too which are great for snow and ice. Sticker was about $25700, paid about $21500 plus tax/title/doc fees. Great value, great tech. Good looks, fun to drive. :-)

Hate to sound like a broken record but the Mazda3 can be had with a manual transmission (if you get the Premium trim Hatchback) for a little more than this new and MUCH cheaper if you negotiate given how hard a time they’ve had selling them. You’ll get a better interior than any economy car and an engine that is naturally aspirated and decently powerful and a similar 6 speed.

I would say the max trim jetta comes with a much nicer interior then the max trim Mazda 3. You get a 10 inch digital cockpit display, an 8 inch proximity lcd display, leather seats and all 5 seats heated with the fronts also ventilated, wireless charging, power seats with 3 person memory seats, etc. What comes on the Mazda that doesn’t come on the Jetta? You get a MUCH better infotainment, more bang for your buck, and a better warranty with the VW.

And the Jetta is now using the 8 speed Aisin (Toyota) transmission, same transmission that’s in the Lexus RX, Camry, Rav-4, etc. it gets much better MPGS then the Mazda 3 as well. The Mazda is quicker though, and most engines are turbos now a days, the 1.4, and 2.0l from Volkswagen seem to be solid, plus you get a nice warranty.

I drove from Sacramento to San Jose and got 53MPG!
@clothestravel
@clothestravel 4 жыл бұрын
David Merry 53 MPG the entire way? For how many miles? Did you determine that through hand calculation, or by using the trip computer? I’ve never gotten above 40 MPG on my 2014 JSW TDI, although the trip computer has indicated 50 MPG on highway stretches.
@futbol55
@futbol55 4 жыл бұрын
@@clothestravel I didn't do the TFL mpg way. I just looked at the dash computer for the ~130 mile stretch and saw that that I got just over 53mpg. When I did fuel back up after some mixed driving and that 260 mile trip (there and back), I averaged 38.8mpg (proper calculation) on that tank. That tank of fuel took me 491 miles. So 230 miles of that tank was mixed driving and I still got nearly 39 mpg. Since I bought it this past January, I have been averaging 36.5mpg and my commute involves going up and down about 1,200ft of elevation.
@clothestravel
@clothestravel 4 жыл бұрын
David Merry Ah, I see. Yeah, I always do the hand calculation (using the Fuelly app, which does it for me based on odometer readings and gas fill-ups). I’ve heard that the dash computer isn’t as accurate. What’s your longest tank? I’ve gotten up to 593 miles on a full tank, and have yet to do any pure highway driving, in which case I think I could drive over 600 miles on a tank. The original VW brochure for the JSW TDI claims up to 608 miles on a full tank. If that’s the case, based on a 14.5 gallon tank, it’s not possible to get much better than 41.9 MPG for an entire tank. Very good MPG, but not the 50 MPG that some claim, which is why I was wondering if it was just for a stretch of driving.

Last year for my personal affordable mid life crisis car I picked up a GLI 35th Anniversary model and have really enjoyed both. That little torquey 1.4 turbo is pretty fun with that 6 speed trans and a great first new car or first manual car. I got a little impatient and ended up modding the GLI for Autocross with some aftermarket wheels / tires, lowering springs, rear sway bar and end links plus a mild tune and she is VERY competitive in STH class. Excellent cars and highly recommended.

I have a 2019 Jetta R-Line spect out very close to this car even the color. I have all that except a manual transmission. I miss the manual. Its a good car. My 2 complaints are 1. Needs a better sounding stereo. 2. It would be a lot more fun with the manual transmission. Note, the 8 speed auto has a slight operating noise when shifting gears. My recommendation is to use a friction modifier after you have put the correct amount of transmission fluid in. Its only 2 ounces & makes a world of difference. VW dealer says that's normal sound from transmission. (No its not)

That 1.4L Motor On That Jetta R-Line Is Gonna To Be A 6 Second Car One Of These Days But Why The Dual Exhaust Covered Up? I Mean It Doesn't Make Any Sense. I Think The R-Line Stands For Race-Line.

VWs have always been a bit pricey. And while I agree that this particular one is something of a bargain (especially with that cold weather package included in that test model's price) I think the thing to keep in mind here is that they're not afraid to give you a stick shift in something more than a base model; a definite kudo for those of us who ain't afraid to row-and-drive-and-heel-and-toe it! -BUT- Knowing that VWs reliability leaves a lot to be desired after 75,000 miles, and that most of us will likely keep their car well past a decade (and for some of us, it might be the last vehicle we'll be buying) I'd have to pass on this car and have a talk with Toyota about their Corolla (sedan only) or possibly Kia about that Forte instead. The Hyundai Elantra doesn't offer a manual and the Honda Civic is just too ugly; no matter what body style you choose. I guess this explains why Toyotas sell so well, huh? Sure is a shame Ford has given up altogether; I bet that new Focus, particularly in the hatchback body style, would have been a great competitor and my choice would have been crystal clear, if that were the case! 😏! 🐰

Papa gross. Toyota Corolla? The Civic is a much better looking car than all of those. And reliability is a function of the end user.
@1_Papa
@1_Papa 4 жыл бұрын
@@clothestravel That's your opinion; I've expressed mine. I will never like that puddle of vomit on wheels Civic. And now, even Honda's reliability is no match for Toyota's. And obviously you don't know this, but reliability is NOT just the "end user," when you manufacture crap in the first place! But please, don't let anyone stop you from buying cars based solely on their looks; that's what keeps people who work in this business from losing their jobs. I think i'll keep doing my part to ensure that I can keep a car as long as fifteen years or more myself.

The GLI rocks it! But once VW went to the 1.4L engine... they lost me. I like the comfort and size. But I hate the lack of power. Even the new Tiguan robbed power from the old style. Same basic engine....but less power. I can honestly say, I’m done buying VW’s until they give our power back in USA models.

I owned a 2019 Jetta Sel for about 20k miles and if your looking for an econobox that push upwards of 50mpg on a long road trip but that 1.4t is just so slow to me and the torsion beam suspension in the rear just let so much body roll but for the average person they’ll never know the difference, space is great but we just upgraded to an Audi A3 Quattro just because I needed a little more speed in my life 😝. Performance buy a GLI for Economy buy the SEL or the Rline. 20k miles and not one problem plus 2020 will be the last year for the 5 year 72k bumper to bumper warranty. So drive it like you stole it.

VW really missed the bullseye here and also with the last generation of Jetta. I don't want an "Americanized" German car. I don't want a "Germanized" American car. I want something different. I want a GERMAN car and this isn't a German car anymore. This is VW's idea of what they think Americans want. No. I want what the other parts of the world have. I want the digital cockpit on any trim level. I want more than 4 speakers on my sound system which we don't get until the SEL trim. I want the option of ambient interior lighting without stepping up to the next to last trim level. My 2015 GTI S (as in the BASE model) has a 6 speaker sound system which is actually quite good, Sirius satellite radio, etc... I can't get these on any 2019 Jetta (even as an option) unless I step up to at least the SEL trim on the "regular" Jetta, or opt for the Autobahn trim on the GLI. Yes, Sirius is Monly available on Jetta SEL, SEL Premium, and GLI Autobahn models. It's not even optional on any lower trim levels. Sirius is something that should be standard on every automobile sold nowadays. It's a subscription service. Make it available to everyone. You either want it or you don't. A Sirius package will only cost an auto manufacturer $50-$75 per vehicle for the physical equipment. It's aggregious what VW has done to the options packages on the Jetta here in the US. I should be able to get the R Line and choose whether I can have the digital cockpit, Satellite radio, etc... But no. All R Lines sold here are exactly the same: analog guages, SMALLER last generation touchscreen infotainment system, 4 speaker sound system (no option to even upgrade to the mid-range 6 speaker setup), manual or auto transmission. That's it. Your only choice is what color is on the outside. THAT'S NOT WHAT WE WANT, VW. Give us options. Give me the chance to own an R line with the lower suspension, cooler wheels, cooler rear bumper, and let me check the boxes for digital cockpit, Beats Audio system, etc. Stop assuming that we want NOTHING in our cars except the lowest price and hardest interior plastics known to man. When it comes time for the MK8 generation, bring it (of you even decide to sell it here. Lord knows that our Gov't may finally demand that every American own an SUV of some sort because apparently we're too f***ING re***ded to own anything else.

Pleasantly shocked to learn via this video that VW has added a manual to the 2020 R-Line (the only good-looking version of the new Jetta), given that 2019s were auto-only. Slightly takes away the sting of Honda just dropping the manual from the Accord Sport. Goddamn automatic-wanting Americans!

Some people just don't like hatchbacks, usually you get more space, but weight goes up a bit, less aerodynamic, some can be louder, visually sedans can look more cleaner but that's personal taste. Then you have cuvs/suvs becoming more popular and killing sedan sales.
