Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show was a hoot. So many of their most fun songs were written by the great Shel Silverstein. Next time you're in the mood for a kick, react to Dr. Hook's song "Cover of the Rolling Stone." It'll make you smile. Guaranteed. I think the leap from '70s music to '80s music occurred the moment Kim Carnes sang "Bette Davis Eyes." It was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for NINE straight weeks and won the 1982 Grammy for song of the year. You can't hear that song without recognizing it as '80s music.

They were known as Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show when they first hit with "Sylvia's Mother." The name was shortened to just Dr. Hook in 1975. The smooth lead singer was Dennis Locorriere (b. 1949). As for the music switch into the synth-pop '80s, that seemed to start with robotic songs like "Cars" by Gary Numan and "Pop Muzik" by M. Pretty soon everyone, including Bruce Springsteen "Dancing in the Dark," his biggest hit) were using synthesizers and/or drum machines. Michael and Janet Jackson had many hits with that sound (listen to the opening of "Billy Jean," that's the '80s sound).

Great question Britt. Easy for me to anewer because I lived though it all. The transition occurred due to the following music influences 1) 60's classic rock and mainstream stereo, 2) 70's psychedelic/hard/synth/progressive rock as musicians had fun with stereo and technology in music, 3) Disco, 4) MTV (1981) made visuals equally important to music which pissed many musicians off, 5) MTV gave birth to 80's pop and punk rock; From there, everything went to shit, songs about the sweetness of love, amazing relationships and being true ended. The music industry shifter to 7) rap/hip hop and artists focused on guns, crime, hoes, gansta life and how bad the world sucks.

There was a watershed of music in the sixties. We were still hearing established artists: Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennet, Sammy Davis Jr, the jazz guys (be-bop, big band, Ella, Sarah Vaughan). Motown came onto the scene. Elvis caused the country crowd to crossover to pop, and vice-versa. The British invasion struck hard with The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and dozens of artists scoring big hits. The Beach Boys spawned the surfer genre (Jan & Dean, Surfaris). We had no internet, just radio and TV, so orchestral music (not classical) still held a place in the Billboard charts with Henry Mancini, Percy Faith, who appeared on television regularly. Stars emerged from musical theater and produced hits: Streisand, Robert Goulet, many others. Stan Getz (jazz) went to Brazil to experience samba, but he returned with Bossa Nova, which America knew nothing about; it exploded here. Other Latin music was mostly limited to movies and night clubs except for the great Xavier Cugat a Cuban bandleader who was the house band at NYC's Waldorf Astoria Hotel and was prominent on TV. Latin music grew only when the country's Latin population reached critical mass. I was a teenager in the early sixties and did not realize what a phenomenon it was. Popular music has changed very much along the way. But in my lifetime no era was as talent-rich or diverse as the sixties.

You could say the change came with MTV's first video - "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles. To me, hearing "She Blinded Me With Science" made me think "we're not in the 70's anymore" or "Cars" by Gary Numan. Britt, the change from 70's style popular music was the emergence & eventual domination of 'New Wave' music. it became popular in the 1970s; stevie wonder and others like parliament/funkadelic, and zapp w/roger troutman used it back then (roger was the first to use 'autotune' way back then--- not to make his voice sound better but to create vocal notes that sounded like an INSTRUMENT)

During the, so-called, 'disco backlash' of the early 80's, Barry Gibb (of the Bee Gees) was asked if he still embraced the disco thing. His reply was, paraphrasing here, that he was still very proud of the music they created. Besides, everyone, he said, did a disco song, at some point, Rolling Stones (Miss You), Eagles (One of These Nights), and many more. Here's another example. Dr. Hook started as a, sort of, quasi 'hippie' band in the early 70's with songs like, "Cover of the Rolling Stone", etc. By the late 70's, they had, totally, changed their musical direction.
@CaptLawrenceD
@CaptLawrenceD Ай бұрын
the bee gees were never doing "disco" music... the writers/producers of the movie "saturday night" heard songs from the bee gees new album "night fever" and decided to feature THEIR music in the movie changing the movie title to "saturday night fever" same with many "disco hits" --- it was just music that became popular in dance clubs like studio 54 in many ways the term "disco music" just meant "black peoples club music" and thus it was hated by the white establishment although it was VERY successful for a long time
@jrdlabs
@jrdlabs Ай бұрын
@CaptLawrenceD I don't necessarily disagree with anything you've said. What the fact of the matter is that, for a number of years, the BeeGees were PERCEIVED as being a disco group. That's undeniable, despite the fact that Barry Gibb always maintained that they recorded pop songs that happened to have a dance beat. Maybe that's a distinction without a difference. Certainly, they did not start the disco movement or intentionally strive to make 'disco' music, per se. But if you ask anyone to identify the type of music that is "Night Fever" or "Stayin' Alive," most folks will say that it is disco.

The "defining line" that you mention, I believe was the result of DISCO. When disco became a thing, suddenly everyone tried to get mileage out of it. As if by magic, suddenly it was OK for bands to play stuff we'd never heard from them before...and somehow just be ok with it! Example :Kiss, I Was Made For Lovin You. Queen, Another One Bites The Dust. Stones, Miss You, Pink Floyd, Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2/Run Like Hell For many, these massive departures from the norm were the source of much angst and derision. And they certainly helped usher in a more pop music world. But that's just a few examples, and many folks in music-media have written much about the very question you asked. Best!

I.E.Electronic drum machine, synthesizers, and the MTV style video rather than footage of the band playing on a stage. The song asks how will music transition from the 70s to the 80s. It was considerably prophetic, and it's a great song as well. Take a look, it is so 80s you will see what I mean.

There's a period at the end and beginning of every decade where music transitions. It's not a hard stop thing. Disco might have died at the end of 70's but it lingered for a few years into the 80's. Hair bands of the 80's continued into the 90's for some time before loosing out to the grunge movement. Grunge had it's years in the 00's. Every decade has bleed over.

I feel that the transition had definitely occurred when synthpop began to dominate esp. when those songs' videos began to be shown on MTV. The first sign of 80s-style synthpop was I think "Cars" by Gary Numan and a few other songs in 1979!!!

Disco was coming into style but so many rejected disco and stayed with pop. I liked both so Dr Hook was very well liked by me. I worked at Disney and another girl and I went looking around backstage and came face to face with them. We ran cause we weren’t supposed to be there! Dr Hook will always be a fav of mine.

Pretty much, the music began to change in about 1980, but the flow allowed the music fans of the 70's to still experience the good music of the '80's as well. I hit it just right. My teenage years were mid 70's. My favorite music was the music of the mid 70's through the mid '80s and I believe that this was about the best time for music ever.

I can identify with this classic Dr. Hook tune...I was married to a blonde haired, green eyed girl in the 80's that always got a great deal of attention. On more than one occasion a gentleman had a waiter deliver a note to her while we were dining out. The notes were complementary and respectful, but unexpected. The "gentlemen" had always left or were leaving the establishment when we received the notes. That's probably because I was a competitive weight-lifter in my younger days and they didn't want to stay around for my reaction. Ha! I always considered it a compliment to me as well. Jackson.

Dennis Locorriere (the main vocalist, not the guy with the eye patch) owns the name Dr Hook, so when they split and then later on Ray Sawyer (the guy with the eye patch) wanted to perform under the name "Ray Sawyer and Dr Hook" or whatever it was, he had to pay a license fee to his former buddy for use of the name. When Ray died, they hadnt spoken for decades, which makes me kinda sad; watching the early 70s stuff theyre obviously good friends and having lots of laughs together and then one day it's just... "I dont wanna talk to you again for as long as we both live if I can help it"

Music like this just doesn’t exist anymore. Music is both a paradox and a paradigm shift. Throughout each era and genre across all music styles is the evolution and creation that will never be of what once was. Rather what it will become next. Music has the ability to be infinite in every nature possible. Past is gone but not forgotten and the future remains to be created. All different but all the same. All comes down to one universal word. Music.

They started as Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show, but shortened it to Dr. Hook. Back in the day, every guy would try and snake a beautiful woman right out from under your nose! Shel Silverstein wrote a lot of their early stuff, including a tear-jerker based on a true story called SYLVIA'S MOTHER (1972), their first hit song.

Ok, Britt. The looks of how people looked were drastically amplified with the birth of MTV, as the previous comments say. It is even a part of the first video to play on the channel by the Buggles and the hit VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR, which was the first clip played. Of course, there were exceptions here and there like Twisted Sister, Culture Club, and a few others, but television is a visual medium. It took the direction of fan magazines and the teen girls to hand select to sell and promote music and looks of those artists. It was harkening back to a time on the 196o's when the Baby Boomers were the audience for the British Invasion. The record companies and television executives all wanted a second bite of the apple. I remember hearing a few songs on the radio that didn't really catch on until the video appeared on MTV. And then the inverse happened. MTV was playing music that found its way onto radio playlists. It was fun, colorful, and addicting. You add the fashion and the hair to mix and you can see the early feminization of men in modern times. For a few hours every you could watch new and established artists roll out the latest video. And the next day talk to your friends about it. The wave continued into the nightclubs as the first big screen televisions would play the video while you either danced or prowled the tables for a hookup. Those were the days, Britt. They really were good. Keep going and enjoy the music.
