Kent Johnson of the Columbus Blue Jackets may have scored one of the best michigan/lacrosse style goals in NHL history versus the New York Islanders. We break down the goal & more in todays video.

Granlund vs Russia in 2011 is the best one. The fact that he stole the puck and deked a defender just before it and that it was done in a semifinal game of IIHF hockey world championship while the match was 0-0 makes it that much better.

Zegras goal against Arizona is 100% the best one. The fact that he had the guts to (within 2 seconds) do a between the legs attempt and the Michigan even though Milano stood in his way, so he needed to go all the way around him makes it the nastiest one for me

I have my bias lenses still on but the Granlund's Michigan goal from IIHF 2011 (Finland vs Russia) was the best one IMO, simply because he had to deke a guy who already was behind the goal before doing so.

And before that deke he stole the puck from another defenseman. It's a very fast and smooth play too.

Just to be clear, Mike Legg was absolutely NOT the first guy to score with the Michigan. It's actual creator is a guy named Bill Armstrong who did this multiple times in the minors. (Not the Bill Armstrong that's Arizona's GM, by the way) Of course Legg did put the move on the map, scoring in a huge collegiate playoff game.

Back when I was still playing in house/rec leagues, I had two guys on my team who could do the Michigan. They were so good at scoring with it, the league banned everyone from doing it because they were scoring at least once or twice a game with it. My team was averaging almost 8 goals a game while this was going on. I really hope the NHL doesn't ban this move like my league did.

On top of it being an unbelievable skill level to pull off, I am surprised that the defender had the brains to realize what was going on that fast, and almost blocked it with a chop of his stick.

Why would you want to see him go to a bigger market? Columbus is last in the league and already stays competitive with attendance already, you'd have a lot of people suddenly become Columbus fans as soon as they are competitive, let alone if they get Bedard. A winning Columbus team gets almost all of Ohio, half of west Virginia, the southwestern part of Virginia, most of Kentucky and maybe even Indiana/parts of Michigan, pretty big market tbh

So I need some clarification on the stick above the net rule. If you watch closely his stick is raised above the crossbar. Only the blade tip is below it or it’s pretty close. Should this goal have been ruled no goal?

I'm no rules lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that it's purely where the puck touches the stick at release. You could even carry the puck above the crossbar (but below shoulder height) as long as you release it below the crossbar.

As a goalie I have a love-hate relationship with the Michigan. I love it because it's such an OP move and also gets you a lot of cool goalie points if you can save it. I hate it also because it's such an OP move. I still get excited when people try it and sometimes I don't even feel too bad for the goalie there; it's a shot that is so hard to predict and therefore save, especially when it happens as smoothly as Johnson did it.
@homerhorner8448
@homerhorner8448 Жыл бұрын
Do you have any safety concerns regarding this move. It brings sticks up to your neck and head area. Sure, it's still below the crossbar, but as this move becomes more common the risk of injury will rise and something bad is bound to happen. I think there will be a time when this move is against he rules.
@bobd2659
@bobd2659 Жыл бұрын
@@homerhorner8448 Doubtful it'd be banned for 'safety'. I mean, that's what they'll call it if they DO ban it, but with the protective gear, it's not really unsafe. Even though it looks fast, the puck and stick aren't really moving all that fast, and not with a lot of momentum. Way more chance of being hurt via a snap/slap shot or simply crashing the net...which won't be banned. Only ban on it that I can see as being 'legit' would be coming directly at the net, versus going around the net...THEN you might have a safety issue with a stick coming in basically at eye level and full speed...

Yes, all for the Michigan, except I would add a rule, if you highstick the goalie or a player in the process, it's an automatic 5min major and game misconduct. If the goalie has his head in the right position, it could end up being a powerplay goal the other way.

Nah, Granlund 2011 is the best one: first he steals the puck from the first defenceman in the corner with an individual effort, then he dekes the second one behind the goal line and proceeds to score a "lacrosse goal". It ended up being the game winning goal in the World Championship (edited) semifinal as well, so it has that going for it, too. Here there is "only" one deke and the lacrosse finish. Nice goal anyway!

The faster the average speed and quickness of the players get, and the more estute goalies and defenders get, the less often the Michigan will be attempted. However, it's probably here to stay. Every player in the NHL will have it in their skill repertoire but the likes of Jay Beagle will be told to only try it in practice. Skill for dazzling works only if you're better than your opponent. Basic skills at a high level keep you in the league while a rough physical game gives you an edge or is an equalizer in a case of a slight disparity in skill.

I think this had potential for coaches challenge (for high stick). The heel of the blade was above the crossbar. I think the move is creative, but I also think that if the player makes contact with the goalie's head, it should be called no-goal and assessed a high sticking penalty. The flashiness of the move has memorized fans and refs into forgetting the basic rules of the game.
@LieuFang
@LieuFang Жыл бұрын
Check the rule again, in NHL it doesn't matter if any part of the stick is high as long as the part making contact with the puck is below the crossbar. This was reinforced earlier this year when Johnson, coincidentally enough, tipped a puck in off of the shaft. The blade of his stick was a meter above the crossbar, but NHL confirmed it was a good goal because the puck made contact on a piece of the stick that was below the bar.

All of the commentors who praise Granlunds goal vs Russia in 2011 dont even know themselves why its The Greatest michigan/lacrosse goal in hockey. The game situation is the icing on the cake, but its the starting speed and it being in my opinion the cleanest michigan since its, while moving a smooth puck pickup, fully behind the red icing line for the whole goal, keeps moving "forward" towards the boards aka doesnt circle towards the goalie + the body is far away from the post, doesnt hit/or mask the goalie in any way with the stick or puck, stick elevates perfectly during the goal over the net without being a high stick and it satisfies the purist in the comments (which im not) who dont like the picking up puck goals since its a quick on the move pickup without bending the stick, just tapping the puck for it to roll on the blade.

I'm not a fan of the michigans but lets be real, goalies are so big (body types and equipment) compared to days past - players have to adapt, and this is part of it. Goalies will adapt eventually. Its part of the evolution of the game and training. Every sport goes through these types of adaptions - look at the nba with players like Harden and how his jumper position was used to draw fouls. that was changed and he had to adapt or the MLB and spin rate pitching.
