You either buy them now at a high “MSRP”, or watch as they become more and more unaffordable. Honestly I think these prices are fair for what the product is, compared to every other Commander precon. The only comparable one would be the secret lair deck from last year. These decks are absolutely worth $50-$60 a piece if you’re still able to find them at that price.

By "secret liar deck from last year" do you mean heads I win tails you lose commander deck? If so, this retailed for $100 each and they still haven't shipped as of yet. Current pre order is $250 to $500 depending on where you look. If you're talking about another product I'm not familiar with I apologize.

My current EDH group mainly just plays whatever the recent precons are against each other and it's been super fun (The Baulders Gate decks were really good!) so I'm hoping we get to do that with these. But I have my small group of WH friends and most of us have or do play Magic so I'm picking up the full set so we can play against each other occasionally. Will be keeping them as is and hoping to find the Ultra Pro deck boxes associated with them.

Got the regular tyranid deck and depending on how I feel about it after the first game and price trends, might get some of the others later. I've been thinking about keeping a raw precon around for a while and these feel cohorent enough that any changes are actively flavor downgrades. So I plan to keep mine unedited. From my POV the issue with the price of pre-cons being £40 (and magic generally being so expensive to buy) is broken into the following: 1) When I first started around Prophecy, a 60 card starter deck was £10 and you could buy 2 and play with a friend for a total of £20 2) To introduce a friend to Magic and the commander format and have decks of parallel level you have to spend £80 for a 2-player experience- a massive hit if they don't like it (you will likely have to buy the deck because they won't part with that much money to trial the game). 3) Board games and other card games offer a 2-player experience for a fraction of that cost that will have the same level of development, thought and sometimes artwork and all contained within one box. 4) For £80 you can buy huge table-spanning games with lots of components, often 200+ cards which mirrors the contents of two commander decks. Ultimately I think that all these precons should be X vs Y and then the price point of £40 would be justified. Because regardless of what they say about cost of printing etc, the markup on cost to make these is huge... and wizards doesn't acknowledge the secondary market so the cost of individually specific cards is irrelevant right? (he says with sarcasm)

The Command Zone review/reveal of the Necron deck was pretty lackluster, even bringing in an avowed fan of Warhammer to the episode. However, the LoadingReadyRun episode covering the Chaos deck was fanfuxingtastic. There were even a pair of visiting rarities normally referred to as the Realms of Chaos books that made an appearance. Cameron's coverage made it even more special. I heartily recommend the LRR coverage of the Ruinous Powers if you are a fan of 40k & Chaos especially.

I agree about how well it fits MTG. I was worried at first that there would be extreme aesthetic dissonance with normal Magic, but honestly, the names, mechanics, and even a good bit of the flavor and world-building feel right at home. The art is the hardest part to reconcile, but even there, we've had Eldtazi swarms, Phyrexian flesh/machine hybrids, and Mirran machines -- not too far off from stuff you see in 40k!

At first I was really conflicted by the Collector's Edition decks, my fear was that this was something WotC was going to do for EVERY set going forward, and I just couldn't afford to pay 100$ a deck for every deck going forward. I thought about it for a bit and decided that even if they did, I would only buy the CE versions of the UB sets. I don't need a collector's edition version of a standard set, I'm happy with the regular versions of those decks if that ever came to pass. So yeah, I did buy a set of CE's (and a backup set from a different shop, which was cancelled), but I'm going to enjoy having and playing this CE deck set. Looking forward to LotR when that comes out, and sure, Dr. Who when that comes around. I don't consider myself a whale, but I sure am on the hook for Commander Product.

The Imperium deck is going to a friend as a gift, the Necron deck is going to me as a birthday gift to myself, and the Tyranid/Chaos decks might turn into other gifts or just live in my collection, we'll see how it goes. The value is good, the flavor's on point, and I like 40k's setting enough to enjoy the cards. I'm cool with it. I pre-ordered the Necrons deck at 55€, and I don't know how much it's worth now nor do I care how much it will be worth in the future. I was simply blown away by the designs and how much they appeal to the things I already like to do in commander. It wasn't about the power level either. Seeing mono black and/or artifact cards that care about graveyard *and* paying life *and* sacrificing creatures for mana felt like I was introduced to something tailor made for me. And I'm not even a W40k fan - I enjoy the universe and watch/read lore dumps from time to time, but ultimately I'm an outsider to the franchise. These precons probably rank among the best Magic products ever.

I plan on picking up all 4, but yeah... it's waaaay too expensive for me, I start feeling nauseous every time I think how much they'll cost me, especially with added cost of 10E at least, putting them over 200E depending on seller... I really like that they've made Tyranids deck, I was expecting Eldars and Orcs, instead of Necrons and Tyranids, and I was really hoping for Tyranids. I also like how they've made Imperium deck amalgam of Imperial factions, rather than just Space Marines, or just Imperial Forces, so this way we get Sisters/Inquisition too, as well as other Imperial Factions. I like Black color, but not sure about Necrons... black Artifacts is not something that's easily... upgradable I guess, but it doesn't really matter, all 4 decks seem great/fun out of the box, which is why I'll be getting all 4... as soon as moment of weakness hits me and I order them, hopefully price won't go up much as it did for Jumpstart even tho it's also "print on demand" X_x

So, here's a fairly unimportant anecdote. As someone who's been trying to branch out into other games lately to play with a friend and "expand my palate", so to speak, I've been looking through the YGO binders & boxes around an LGS I've been semi-regularly visiting (my hometown's doesn't carry YGO since the customers just aren't there for it). I also got interested in a few archetypes, one of which had many cards being reprinted in a Structure Deck. These decks are... weird, as they're, like, singleton? So generally to get a full playset of the cards you want or need you gotta buy three. This is pretty standard for YGO Structure Decks, as far as I'm aware. Even taking that into account (and the fact that most of the cards in these decks are non-fancy reprints) I still got a full playset of a boatload of cards for 27-30 bucks. Those three decks alone carried 30 of the 40 cards I need for my Main Deck, including a playset of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, a notorious staple card that floats around 5-20 bucks. Again, it's a fairly inconsequential anecdote. YuGiOh is a different game, its reprint policy is WAY more aggressive, the Structure Decks are mostly singleton reprints that are... NOT really designed to play out-of-the-box (at least, not very good past kitchen-table casual). And it doesn't typically reprint cards with new art - though their foils obviously don't bloody curl. It's not fair to compare these two cardboard rectangle games as if they were the same - though they could both learn a thing or two from each other. Honestly? I think it'd be fair if the price of new Commander decks (with the usual like 15 new cards) floated around 25-30 dollars, but we're talking the standard, not-fancy, Standard-set-themed decks. If we got more decks like these *on occasion,* where almost half or a majority of the cards are completely new? I'd happily pay 35 to 40 for one I was interested in. These shouldn't become the new norm (as the card pool is so deep in this game as it is that I'm drowning in it when looking through Scryfall for interesting cards) but I'd love a surprise "fresh take" pod of decks every now and then. You know... like the old yearly/biennial Commander sets were, I guess. You know, *supplemental products,* I think they're called.

Vince brings up a good point these are basically toys to play with and while I may trade a card or two off most of the the EV doesn't end up mattering. But still great to know you're getting your bang for your buck since commander is such an expensive format and it's staples always hold their value.
@themoops4006

Issues with crossover crap diluting and cheapening the game's identity aside the biggest problem is reprints. If any cards in these precons or future crossover sets wind up being staples in any formats and feature names or other elements that Wizards is just licensing the right to we won't get reprints and the cards will be stupidly expensive. We've seen how averse they were to reprinting a 7-card secret lair, we're not getting all 40 cards in every deck reprinted, we're not getting non-LOTR versions of all the LOTR cards coming next year. You should be opposed to these decks and crossover sets in general for this reason, it is nothing but terrible for the game and will just create more price-gating and expensive staples. I don't think it matters how much value these individual decks have, the problem is that this is just bad for consumers in the long run.

I'm buying the foil Tyranid Swarm deck. They're retailing around NZD$250 which is eye watering, my LGS is getting 2 copies of each premium version and I'm worried there may not be another wave. I'm not by any means a Warhammer player, but Tyranids remind me of slivers, and the Alien franchise plus it has a lot of really cool ramp reprints. I've seen a video detailing the surge foiling, and they have a much nicer treatment for the thick stock commander where the text box isn't foiled and personally they should have done that for all the cards. If I'm honest, mostly excited to get a foil Exotic Orchard given previous versions are around US$70. 😂

I think £200-ish for all 4 decks is alright. I kind of look at it as £1 or so per card, and you can rotate decks with friends where you can have 1v1, 2v2, or 1v1v1v1 game nights. I wouldn't ever buy just a single deck because you're kind of limiting yourself if the game itself dies. At least with all the decks you can share the experience with friends, and I'm personally all for that. I bought 4 to play with and 4 to keep sealed for the future. Once the licensing agreement runs out, then the decks will be worth a lot of money, so buying the actual Collector's Edition versions of the decks is worth it if you want a good investment. For example; I bought everything for 'AVP: The Hunt Begins', and after Disney bought out Fox and the Alien and Predator franchises went to Disney, the game itself shot through the roof in terms of value due to it getting canned as the licensing agreement became null and void as the agreement was between Fox and Prodos Games. IP's and in gaming products can lead to huge money if you invest properly. Just eBay search 'AVP: The Hunt Begins' and you'll see what I mean in terms of how expensive the models/miniatures go for nowadays. I bought a model for £12 from Prodos Games and I sold it for £250+ on eBay. Keep in mind I had A LOT of models. I made absolute bank and reinvested the profit. LEGO is also another massive product for IP investment that you can look into. Especially the current 'Super Mario' line that they have, of which I've fully invested into buying 5 of each kit and put them into storage for that glorious licensing agreement that will eventually come to an end.

I agree with you about using magic as a vehicle to prop up these dying games. In fact, The next one they should do is UNO. You hardly ever see uno games anymore so it should be the perfect IP to integrate into magic. Just imagine playing an UNO reversal on someones commander and sending it back to the command zone. Wizards should make this happen immediately.

I paid way too much for a necron collector's edition. But it's all good. I'm psyched to receive my can of pringles. The whole theme and aesthetic of that deck is just so on point, so I'll be keeping it together for whenever I need to pull out a pre-con.

Yo... someone actually mentioned Warhammer Champions (the Age of Sigmar tcg)! I fuckin' loved that game. They did it dirty, made some pretty BAD design choices, went WAY overboard on the erratas, etc, but... the game itself was rad. I still have like 10 decks constructed for my wife and I to play with every so often. Man, I hope 40K is successful so we can get some Age of Sigmar precons one day :p

Long time MTG player, with a curiosity that never bloomed into an addiction for 40k. XD Picked up Imperium and Tyranids! I kind of like the "museum" mentality of, keep them as their own thing/unedited but really like the idea of magicified versions for some of the singles (I don't want to mix my MTG arts with the distinct style of WH40k) and eventually crossovers with other Beyond sets/If we ever make it back around to more 40k themed product.

They're not. Where I live the price for the set of 4 non-collectors hovers around 1/3-1/4 of a decent salary. Now assuming the intended use case is to play them as an "EDH battlebox" we can compare the product to a standalone card-based board game. Boxed games with 150-300 custom cards and a haul of dice, tokens, boards cost around as much as a single 40kxMtG deck and provide similar quality of product and similar time spent playing. Then the value of cards as singles. The elephant in the room is that 1/4 (up to 1/3 in case of Necrons) of a deck are basic lands. True, these are pretty, but there's only so many basic lands collectors and these cards don't really add functionality to a Magic collection. On singles websites a big part of cards from the set are sold at bulk prices, something I did not expect to happen - unique art cards from a premium product were supposed to hold more value than their generic counterparts. Magic-finance-wise it's just another batch of precons with a few value-bomb cards and a bulk of bulk, and even inflated pricepoint of sealed product doesn't help the value of the chaff. With a promise of continuous printing there's also little expectation of secondary market appreciation, and so - the decks are overpriced.

@@zault My house. I have a modest canon photo printer/scanner that has survived 5 or so years (pretty solid run for a printer these days.) I make the cards using cardconjurer (they have a ton of different frames, the ability to drag and drop art, and the help functions are good.) Download them, paste them into a Word document, re-size them to be ever so slightly smaller than card size (6 per page, although you can fudge it to get 9 if you really mess with the margins), then print using the highest quality on regular paper. Cut them out and sleeve them backed by a basic land or whatever. I do like to actually own a copy of anything not terribly expensive, just in case anyone complains. I just keep them all together. I really like doing this for lands because I don't exactly feel the need to own 10 copies of Underground Tomb or whatever.

my LGS sold out before I rememberd to ask about them. I need pieces of the Necron deck for my Glissa the traitor artifact graveyard recursion deck. I guess I can seek out singles and trades with people that did get them to take apart. However, they passed my threshold for cards I wanted that buying it and trading the rest would have made it worth it for me to buy it as a product. I have no particular attachment to 40K and especially not the Nercons.

Collectors edition anything falls in the same category of designer clothes and jewellry for me. It doesn't effect me in pretty much anyway since I'm happy with plain t-shirts and cheap jogging bottoms and I don't feel pressured to go out and splash on 24k gold rings or supreme hoodies. If this is the way wizards are gonna monetize moving forward then so be it, I suggest people just buy the plain version if you plan to play it and move on unless something truly resonates with you and you are financially sound. (of which I bought 3 of the 4 pre-cons, I'm not a big fan of necrons so I skipped out on it this time) :)

While I do agree with most of what you say here Vince I still can't justify the cost of the collector's edition. You shouldn't need to buy it just to get the alternative commanders in foil they used to be a standard product, that's them cutting back on one product in part to justify another. Also no way can I justify £100+ on a foil deck with the quality issues WOTC has with foil's still. There's already video's of these coming out of the box curled. You can't sell premium collectables and fail to deliver them to a decent quality.

Im sure a big reason for the initially high price (before the prices spiked) is due to Games Workshops liscensing fees and such (and you know how greedy they are on TOP of WOTC greediness). Im glad I preordered the whole set of collector decks early in spoiler season before everything spiked above the normal general "retail" price (I do miss MSRP). This is also the first Magic product ive ever preordered and the FIRST Universes Beyond set I haven't despised. I think the Warhammer IP / setting and lore fits WAY better alongside Magic than any other universes beyond thing they've done, and I would love to see more Warhammer and other similar vibed IPs introduced that actually fit into a fantasy and deep lore theme. Although, I wish they would have done Age of Sigmar decks instead since the fantasy vibe would fit even better when played alongside Magic IP cards. Im sure 40ks popularity and since alot of 40k players despise AOS they chose 40k instead. I wish Warhammer players didnt have such a grudge against AOS, its not that bad (Sorry GW killed fantasy, but this is what it is now. Plus the rules especially in AOS 3rd edition play very good and its less bloated feeling than 40k). Another thing I see people complaining about is the slight curl these cards have shown to have in the box openings on youtube. Although these should have no curl, these cards have shown to be curled in a "banana" style, not the normal "pringle" style we're used to seeing with MTG products. In the openings, the guys stated that the cards flatten out when sleeved (unlike a pringle curl foil which will puff up the sleeve along the opening, but a banana curl foil cant since the curl is along the length of the sleeve rather than the top opening of the sleeve). So many people decided against buying the collectors edition based on the curling despite it not being the terrible and hideous pringle foil. I ahve many foils from OG Innistrad and New Phyrexia that are "banana" curled and they dont look curled at all when sleeved up (both single and double sleeved). I think people have greatly over dramatacized the curling situation. Yes I wish there wasnt ANY curl and its still frustrating that WOTC cant nail it down like other TCGS (and people can choose not to buy it to get that point across to wotc), but at the end of the day some people want to play with blinged out versions of cards instead of "boring" or plain cards, and these foils aren't going to have the same curling issues as normal foils like people are making it out to be. Feels like theres just a lot of people whining and making it a much biggere end of the world deal than it is going to be. Its the buyers choice and the buyers loss if they chose to pass on it because of that (especially now with post price spikes / sold out supplies)

As a 40K and MTG fan as well as a CSM/Necron player, these decks are right up my alley. I am getting all 4. The collector's decks are a bit rich for my blood, so I will pass on them, but they are neat. If there are cards that I really want foil versions of, I might pick those up as singles if the prices aren't too outrageous.

I couldn't get all four collector edition decks from my local LGS because of stock issues, so I had to order from Amazon. Won't get these till the end of October sadly. But I felt getting the collectors editions of these decks was absolutely worth the money. I paid ~$550, but the price of these has almost doubled if you want to buy all four online. Several Surge Foils are going for $75 a piece already. We'll have to see what supply of these collectors editions does to the overall value of these decks.

@goatsfluff
@goatsfluff 2 жыл бұрын
The precons (and Magic products in general) are absurdly expensive over here. The Dominaria United decks finally hit the price of a Nintendo Switch game. The Warhammer 40k decks cost even more than these. And buying a collector's edition costs about the equivalent of 100 dollars or pounds more than the regular edition. So these new decks are very expensive. Considering we're getting a lot of new cards and potentially all-new art on each card in every deck(?), I guess the price being slightly higher is understandable. The problem is that the commander precons aren't really entry-level products anymore. I can't recommend that someone gets into commander and spends 70 dollars to get a deck (and they do not give discounts here; once a deck is gone, it's gone). There are maybe two (arguably three) outlets, and I've never seen any of them lower the price of a deck. I can't order from abroad either, so Card Kingdom is virtually useless to me (it costs more than or about the same as buying the physical product here, once all is said and done). So if the precons aren't entry-level products, the cards all better be good. They can't expect people who've never played commander before to pay these ridiculous prices? At least D&D and Warhammer fans are used to spending a lot of money on the IPs already XD My concern is that the price of a deck will keep increasing and that a Magic IP deck will cost twice what they did a couple years ago. And then three times. And so on. I want these decks. Heck, I'll probably buy one of each. I'd love to buy two, but we're getting dangerously close to how much money I find it acceptable to pay for cards from a set :p I guess I don't mind there being collector editions of precons. But I wish they'd really print cheaper commander decks at least once a year, at the same price point as the Kaldheim or Zendikar decks, just so a curious mind might be able and willing to get into the game. You know what several people I know do? They proxy. Because the game is too expensive. I don't mind (generally), but it speaks to how accessible (or inaccessible) the game is to some players. The way it is now, a lot of proxies are being printed on normal paper or are made in China and shipped over here. The price point is something to be mindful of, because it's getting worse all the time, and especially lately. But. I'll probably ask my LGS to set aside a four-deck set (or two, though they don't give discounts). I just hope WotC stop increasing the prices of normal precons and that these luxury precons stay at this price point. FOMO and greed make for an ugly combo, much worse than any stax or infinites that are out there.

I preordered all 4 and am going to keep them intact as they are as their own little game, maybe bring them to my playgroup here and there. I would have liked to get the Tyranid deck in foil but with the price as it is, I am looking on the secondary market for my absolute favorite cards out of it (Hierophant, Trygon and Venomthrope for example) and get those if they're not extraordinarily expensive.
