Is this really a traditional pocket knife? The HEADesigns Falcon slipjoint review.

Is this new HEADesigns Falcon slip joint really a traditional EDC knife? Old guy knives, or most knives before the 80s used to be non locking. The Falcon takes that classic premise, but adds a strong back-spring and modern materials like titanium and carbon fiber. The limited production pocket knife competes with other modern traditionals like the Lionsteel CK01 shuffler, the Northwoods Madison Barlow, and the Benchmade Proper. This video compares the Sam's knife with those other new classics. I also cut some tomatoes (not food prep) and slice cardboard.

I don’t know how there can be so many a-holes who think they need to comment pointless grievances towards you. You are easily my favorite knife guy because you get it, it’s a dumb hobby but we all love it and you don’t take yourself seriously. Thank you for what you do for all of us

I have absolutely no problem with your tone. You don't sound boring. And thank goodness, you don't sound over-hyped like you're a popular Twitch streamer, or Metal Complex. I also appreciate your near-absent accent. Your content is direct, intricate, and clever. Keep it up please.

Dude same I watched some metal complex for awhile but I had to unsub I just can’t with that guy anymore. Nick shabbaz is bubbly but that positivity has a core of skepticism and honesty. MC just hypes everything up to get more money from his amazon affiliate store. I’ve watched a lot of his reviews and I honestly can’t recall a single one that was overall negative, total shill

I just met a Para2 in Spydie blurple G10. What a thing. To think I sunk $50 of your USDs into sculpted olive/black scales a few years ago. I’ve played the game, spent a ton of cash on knives. I see a LionSteel Bestman or Thrill in my future, but I’m not doing the jewellery I just like what Molletta and Lionsteel do. If you miss a knife, you don’t get another run, like that Gareth Bull Shamwari. One time I had 4 Knife Research Rasuls bought for the simple reason I knew they were good. Sold 2 at cost to people who knew, gave one, kept one.

As someone old enough to remember the world before manual one hand knives were common, I truly agree that many “modern” slipjoints have ridiculously weak back springs. I somebody used to lock is going to chop off their fingers, and these companies will then remember why back springs were usually stiff. I do think that larger areas to grab the knife blade for opening are good, and would make even more sense for knives with real back springs.
@innocentoctave
@innocentoctave 4 жыл бұрын
I wonder whether they being made weaker so that there is no doubt - e.g., in the eyes of the police - that they don't lock.
@Below-Average_Joe
@Below-Average_Joe 4 жыл бұрын
Paul B maybe, but it really makes for a dangerous knife. I think companies are just trying to make them easy to open, but the whole point of slipjoints is that they aren’t easy to open.

@@haakonr1 False analogy. If you didn't have a car, you wouldn't have developed a style of life that depends on it. In any case, the real analogy here would be 'I need a car, but I won't accept anything less than a Ferrari'.
@haakonr1
@haakonr1 4 жыл бұрын
Paul B you really don’t see the practicality of one hand opening? The analogy isn’t false, it’s just a bit far fetched. I could probably get by quite well without a car, but some things would take more planning. And there is nothing practical about a Ferrari as far as I’m concerned. OHO to me has nothing to do with showing off or fidgeting. I just find my weak hand to be busy on a regular basis when I’m reaching for my knife.

Not sure if I can get behind buying a supersteel slipjoint when the same knife made with a "normal" steel would probably be 1/4 the price. I have 50 year old slipjoints made of ??? steel that have never been resharpened and still work great for whittling (the hardest feasible use I can find for a slipjoint), food prep while camping, and opening the bags of water taffy that line all 8 pockets of my cargo pants. Then again most knives are vanity pieces these days anyway, it just seems irrational to build something where its construction quality so vastly exceeds the scope of its use.

I like the sheep's foot and Wharncliffe points, but I don't like the dead flat belly to the blade. There are a number of designs that feature what I think of as a 'modified sheep's foot' - i.e., a point that is still recognisably a sheep's foot, but with varying degrees of curve to the blade belly. If you take it too far, the blade develops a point and starts to look like a short clip point: but in between, you end with what in my view is a more useable knife. Examples: Gerber Straightlace, Spyderco Roadie, Fox Knives Livri, Viper Den 2, Rick Hinderer XM Slippy. All of these are slipjoint knives.

I like them little pink wintergreen mints you young whippersnapper. On the bright side, you young'ens are finally coming around. Scales are under the covers Unless its a Swiss Army Knife in which case the scales are called liners and the covers are called scales. And covers can also be called handles but then if call them handles then scales underneath are called liners unless somebody still wants to call them scales. (Yeah, some people need to lighten up a little with their knife terminology. Not every knife maker uses GEC's naming convention.) As for locks on knives there have been a variety of locking mechanism for slip joint and other traditional pattern knives for about about a thousand or so years. There were locking folders back during the Roman Empire! I think the primary reason you're seeing numerous knife companies that are more known for so-called "modern folders" is purely due to restrictive and asinine knife laws that cut directly in the ability to sell knives in certain countries or areas.
