For over sixty years, incidents of lamas and ordinary Tibetans self immolating have occurred, especially in March every year, around the birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama. It's not a big deal. Even if the current Tibetans are better off than at any time in their history, and better off than people in many parts of mainland China, this phenomenon will not change. This has nothing to do with so-called "oppression". This is the result of religious brainwashing. In Europe and America, cult leaders also call on believers to collectively commit suicide every year. This principle is the same. This phenomenon is also difficult to prevent. If need to condemn, we should condemn the 14th dalai lama who hints his followers to sacrifice themselves. What worries me more is that after the 14th Dalai Lama's death, more radical organizations than him will gain a say among exiled Tibetans and become terrorist organizations. This possibility is very small. Firstly, the Tibetan people themselves love peace, and secondly, the CIA also thinks that playing the Tibet card is futile and will not sponsor them. But the possibility cannot be ignored.

My impression is that it's happening in Dharamshala, India: young men in particular are being encouraged by the exile community to do it. It seems to be part of an effort to regain global attention. I'll try to find the article where I read something to this effect. The number of Tibetans in Dharamshala is declining dramatically, as it's hard to make a living there: people are moving back to Tibet or emigrating to third countries. (See, e.g., Al Jazeera, "After 60 years in India, why are Tibetans leaving?", 21 March 2019) In the face of this decline, there's diminishing attention and a certain malaise and desperation among the exile community in India. (See, e.g., Medium, "Why are Tibetans leaving India when the Dalai Lama is still there?" by Shashi Kei, 29 April 2019) I think there's an effort to encourage the acts among younger activists in India in response to this decline.

When I was young, it often happened that the West attacked the Chinese government with the issue of Xizang as a topic. With the opening of the Qinghai Tibet Railway and the growing prosperity and stability of Xizang, there have been fewer such attacks because they are futile. Legally, even the western view of history believes that since the Yuan Dynasty, Xizang has been included in the territory of China (with the help of the Mongols. It must be acknowledged that the Han people are not an aggressive ethnic group ). After the Han people overthrew the Yuan Dynasty and established the Ming Dynasty, they not only inherited Xizang in legal theory, but still managed Xizang, but it is relatively loose, and Xizang is actually an independent kingdom within China. Even if the western historical map does not recognize that the Ming Dynasty controlled Xizang, in the Qing Dynasty, even Westerners recognized that the Qing Dynasty ruled Xizang (with the help of the Manchu people). The golden vase lottery invented by Emperor Qianlong completely held the power of appointing and removing religious leaders in Xizang in the hands of the Chinese central government. In the era of ROC, China was poor and weak, and Xizang took the opportunity to become independent. Thank Chairman Mao reclaimed Xizang before India could annex it. The central government originally gave the Xizang government great independence, but let them gradually implement land reform and religious reform, but they not only did not, but also rebelled with the help of the CIA. At that time, all China was building socialism, but Xizang was practicing serfdom, which was not only a disgrace to China, but also to human civilization. How can you move the cake of interest groups without fighting or dying? The armed conflict between the PLA and Xizang was ievitable. On March 28, 1959, Xizang officially ended the serfdom, and the millions of former serfs became masters of their own land. So far, Xizang is still an autonomous region, and Tibetan compatriots enjoy a high degree of autonomy. The relationship between mainland China and Xizang is getting closer and closer. Every day, countless Chinese and foreigners travel in Xizang by car. Countless Tibetans have also come to work and live in mainland China. Today's Xizang is prosperous and the people enjoy stability and peace, as witnessed by countless videos. Even if Westerners believe they are all "actors" of the Chinese government (how many actors are needed? How much does it cost per day? If there is such a good job, please introduce it to me), Westerners should believe the videos shot by Western tourists. Nobody wants to go back to the poor and backward Xizang in the past, let alone die for the Dalai Lama, except for a few extremists brainwashed and incited by religion. Morally, Westerners should not imagine Xizang before 1959 as a utopia, right? In Xizang in the past, a few slave owners and lamas enjoyed imperial life. The vast majority of people were serfs of different levels, and their basic living conditions could not be met. The incidents of skinning serfs alive and lamas beating serfs to death often occur. The status of millions of serfs is inferior to that of livestock. In 1950, the People's Liberation Army entered Xizang, and in 1959, the serfdom was abolished. Xizang compatriots were very happy in the historical images and documentaries. It was the first time to become the owner of their own land and own personal property. Those who fled were slave owners and their followers, while those who remained in Xizang were millions of serfs and their descendants. Now the Chinese government basically ignores the 14th Dalai Lama, and he won't be able to live for a few days. After his death, the 15th Dalai lama must in Xizang rather than overseas. Overseas Tibetans cannot continue to affect domestic Tibetans. But the above are meaningless for exiled serf owners. I watched many videos of foreigners traveling in Xizang, and many comments from exiled Tibetans are as follows: the first sentence is "how beautiful and prosperous and wealthy my homeland is", and the second sentence is "must take back Tibet from China". Haha, they never know how to be grateful and never think about who built poor and backward Xizang into today's beautiful homeland. In order to build beautiful and properous Xizang, how much money has the Chinese government invested and how many Chinese worker and officials have sacrificed. This is the thinking of serfdom owners, and they can only have beautiful dreams in which they are still parasitic parasites on millions of serfs. Edit: my reply to the Westerners who are not malicious to China but out of curiosity and moral doubt: in China, even the people who dislike the CPC most and the opponents funded by the CIA will not mention topics such as Xizang and Xinjiang. Do you know why? Because these topics are too absurd. American spy satellites fill in the sky, but there is not even a single picture of evidence. BBC closes the doors and windows, creates a tense and terrifying atmosphere, and interviews the "Uyghurs" who speak fluent English. Temporary dormitories on construction sites are ubiquitous throughout China, western media say they are "concentration camps". Haha.Everyone in China has a smartphone and can send anything to the internet at any time. If there were really any persecution and massacre, the whole country would have been boiling long ago. Everyone can go to Xinjiang and Xizang at any time to see what has happened. Every Chinese city has Tibetan and Uygur compatriots who can be asked at any time. So, Western lies can only deceive Westerners, and in China it is a complete joke, even Uyghurs hate Americans very much. If you say that the Chinese government persecutes ethnic minorities, countless Chinese people, including ethnic minorities, will be surprised, "Are you drunk?" The political correctness of China is to implement preferential policies for ethnic minority compatriots, giving them full respect for their customs and religious beliefs, and offering them preferential policies such as reducing or exempting scores in entrance exams. China has implemented the one-child policy for fourty years, which only applies to Han Chinese, and ethnic minority compatriots can have as many children as they want. The Uyghur population has increased from 4 million in 1950 to 12 million in 2022.

@@KevinWayne because the concept "Tibet" is not equal to today's Xizang(西藏), including the lands the two words refer to. You can consult english dictionary to read how the word "tibet‘’ come from. After Tubo dynasty more than 1000 years ago, the Han Chinese call it Zang(藏). We say Zang for more than 1000 years. You westerners still use the word tibet. Xizang means west zang. there is also Dongzang(east zang) but we didn't say that. we used to say "Kang/康" instead of Dongzang. In the era of ROC, there was a province called Kang. @WarLionsofGesar
@WarLionsofGesar Ай бұрын
@@jerrystakeonchina799 Haha, there are two reasons behind this. Firstly, the Dalai Lama group has their own intention when using the word "Tibet". Because the lands controlled by the Tubo Dynasty and all Tibetan kingdoms in history is far more than that of today's Xizang Autonomous Region, including today's Qinghai, western Sichuan, southern Xinjiang, western Yunnan, southern Gansu, and even parts of the territory of Nepal, India, Sikkim. They call it this way to confuse the public. If we continue to use this word, Uyghur people, Mongolian people, Han Chinese and other ethnic minorities in China must be unhappy. Secondly, the names of all countries and ethnic groups in the world are how their own people refer to themselves, but it is not for China. They are all the names that Westerners refer to Chinese people. China comes from Qin/Chin Dynasty. Peking, Tsintao, Hong Kong and other words are spellings created by Westerners based on Chinese pronunciation. Over time, it can easily lead to various misunderstandings. Perhaps one day, China announced that its English name is Zhongguo, not China.

0:05 Hi Jerry, the BBC carries one or two anti-China “news” items each week. I object to my licence fee being used in this way. UK Members of Parliament often provide a vague statement in association to lend the story a measure of credibility. Often there is a reference to some previous story so that we are reminded of China’s past misdemeanours. The latest item was about counterfeit postage stamps: did you see it? It carried an implication, but no evidence, of course, that the Chinese government was somehow behind the circulation of these fake stamps. Can you imagine the Chinese government sitting down, asking themselves how they could best make trouble in the UK, and coming up with the idea of fake postage stamps? It’s beyond ridiculous and it needs to be exposed for what it is - US propaganda.

There may have been some instances, but the US knows about that problem-- for example, the tragic case of Aaron Bushnel and Vietnamese monks self-immolated in protest against the US war. As for demanding that the Dalai Lama return to Tibet, aren't the US and India who are preventing that? I remember the Dalai Lama saying that Xi had said he could return to China.

Hi Jerry, I just today heard the news release by the Australian PM that a Chinese national student studying in Sydney was the sixth deceased victim of the Bondi Junction shopping centre mass stabbings last Saturday! The Police did not classify this as a terrorist attack because it did not involve ideology! What is your view on this odd definition of what constitutes a terrorist attack? How frequent do foreign students studying in China get murdered compared to Chinese students studying in other countries?
@jerrystakeonchina799
@jerrystakeonchina799 Ай бұрын
It was not an ideological attack Colin, the man responsible was not representing any sort of ideology - it was a case of mental health and nothing more, they happen in every country, even China sometimes - let's not apportiion blame on anyone for what was clearly a tragic and possibly unavoidable event, certianly an event that would be impossible to predict as there was no history (according to my understanding at the moent) of violence from this person. The fact that a Chinese person died is not different to the fact that an Australian person died - it's tragic, China will ask for an explanatino, it will be provided and the family will receive whatever consular assistance families receive when a citizen is murdered (or killed) in another country I don't think this is anything to do with the politics, the economy, the tensions between the two countries, it's nothing more than a sad day for Australia and China to grieve together

I live in Australia. The killer was mentally ill. Definitely not politically motivated. 5 other people died, including a Pakistani who seek refuge in Australia only a year ago, and 4 other Australians. It is reported that the killer only targeted women so all died were women except for the Pakistani security guard who stood up to the killer.

Jerry, Thank you for tackling this sensitive topic. Your presentation is absolutely first class. Of course there are things wrong in China - and things that are right - but the current avalanche of poisonous articles and accusations against the country are simply unjustifiable and deceitful. We need more fair and balanced reporting. Sadly this seems unlikely in the current MSM climate, but we can all try to help bring common decency and honesty to the international discussion.

My friend, I had wanted to be a cop when I was 6 years old at my kindergarten graduation; I saw the contradictions of capitalist society, which keeps us unfree, and then I had changed my mind. Jerry, I know you were a cop, and my grandpa Jerry had fought in Korea while dying on train tracks in Iowa, and I can say that socialism and communism is the only way that things can be less (or not) contradictory. So much has shown me this, from Judy Garland (my distant relative) to my own family’s experience). And I hope that even China can improve its conditions further even if the west abandons capitalism (as it was supposed to do for a long time) for socialism and communism. The 1890s Supreme Court noticed the “communistic” tendencies of the people - like the Farmer-Labor Party did in the Midwestern USA where Judy Garland is from. I’m a bit drunk, so sorry for the ramble, but the conditions have stamped this into my head in the western USA.

Chinese ICE cars' fuel tanks have block valves to prevent fuel siphoning. It's still possible to modify the fuel tank or drill a hole but it's substatially harder for oridinary people to obtain gasoline. And I would argue this is a good restriction, Chinese society is convenient enough that normal people have almost no use for gasoline outside of driving cars. And construction companies, chiemical labs and other institutes have proper licenses to buy them legally when needed.
