Exuding the immediate feeling of joy, Wurrungwuri by Carter Williamson offers a pleasant experience from the home’s heritage façade to its modern extensions to become the best modern home in the area. As the clients desired a modern renovation to improve Wurrungwuri’s original from, Carter Williamson added a new addition that would respond to the heritage structure and rear harbour views as well as allow the owners to showcase their artwork. Both architect and interior designer, Carter Williamson performed the perfect collaboration between the client, architect, designer and builder, which resulted in the delivery of the best modern home.
From the front door, one experiences a warm welcome as they step into the original home, with living spaces to one side and bedrooms to the other. Moving further into the best modern home, a threshold between the old and new acts as a gallery. With a double-height void allowing for a connection to the dining room below, the void becomes an important part of the home’s interior design. In the below new additions, Carter Williamson has placed darker rooms to the left that sit under the original home, whilst light-filled spaces sit to the right. The home then leads into the main entertaining rooms and kitchen as well as the dining room that sits directly under the void that features a Tom Dixon chandelier.
Below this level is the cabana room acting as the great lounge room, whilst off to the other side is the elongated TV room. In addition, the cabana opens onto the pool, whilst the TV room opens to an outdoor dining area to encourage an ease of indoor-outdoor living. Set between these two spaces, stairs cascade down to the rear yard, complemented with a sandstone seawall and jetty that allows for an appreciation of the waterfront surrounds. Moreover, there is a generous roof terrace that sits within a garden, offering ample views of the harbour beyond as well as the lower levels of the home. Considering the home’s surrounds, Carter Williamson did not want to follow the same tactics as other residences yet still aimed to remain conscious of the sweeping views. Walls and sliding doors are employed to deliberately harness views in each room and encourage an appreciation of the best modern home.
Playing an important part in every home, natural light is brought in through courtyards, windows and various voids that connect the levels together. Furthermore, a reference to the materiality of the home’s original heritage sandstone form is seen in the glass and blonde bricks across the exterior and the concrete that is used to form the home’s main structure. Further expressing similar materials throughout the interior design, additional layers of texture and tactility help to bring the monumentality of the house’s architecture to a domestic scale. Born from a collaboration between the client’s ambition, the architects’ design and the builder’s craftmanship, Wurrungwuri becomes the best modern home in Sydney.

If one can look past the incomprehensible levels of wealth of the clients here, to admire the meticulous attention of detail of the architecture and interior design, but also the craftsmanship of putting it together; the work is art itself.

One cannot look past the levels of wealth becasue it's expressed everywhere in this build. I found it boring. much like paper cut artworks where the effort involved is always present and overshadows the impact and potential impact. I can only see the opportunity cost but to do that requires imagination.

@@stevewren1079 No. Any design is a function of constraints, including budget. In this case, the budget appears high for marginal design gains. If the same budget was spent in different ways I would expect a better design outcome. I would expect similar design outcomes could have been achieved with a smaller budget. The oportunity cost is what else could have been constructed with the same expenditure and that requires imagination and insight. I was being ostentatious with language and ideas. I believe this build is ostentatious (pretntious and showy) rather than good design. I like people with money. I like good design.

This is without a single doubt one of the most amazing homes that I've ever see. First, the use of curved surfaces immediately gives the house a very organic, cozy vibe. On top of that, it looks compact, which reinforces the coziness factor, in contrast of those huge homes that look like an industrial building with every room very apart of each other, feeling distant and cold. This home is nothing like that, it invites you to live there. Amazing job from everyone involved, including the skilled workers that built every beautiful detail of it. PS: That chevron floor looks stunning.

Wow! What a spectacular house! The curves are so sensual and the raw concrete is softened perfectly by wood and soft interiors. I really love the skylights and double-height spaces around the stairs and the dining room. It's a great way to bring light inside the house and create a true wow factor with architecture, while still keeping spaces intimate enough to feel like a true home vs. some resort or an office building. The house also looks stunning from the outside! It's just perfect for that site, which was not easy to do considering how narrow it was and how you had to build 3 levels to fit the house there.

A detail I love is that the metal trim and framing is colored brass instead of the more typical black. Here, the framing intentionally blends into the home's broader palette instead of creating harsh outlines as an afterthought or by accident. It's a minor point, but once you see it, you can't unsee it (as the kids say).

Fantastic artistry and craftsmanship. I have to confess, it's not really to my personal taste. A bit too stone-coloured, stark, bare and concrete-y for me personally. And I find some of the spaces a bit too cavernous and lacks cosiness and warmth. But I am well aware that it's catering to a specific brief and it definitely does that spectacularly. Great view - and I love the seamless blend of multiple outdoor courtyards and outdoor terraces blending into the scenery and pool and harbour views.

I wish you'd make two videos for each house, one with the architects/interior designers/owners commentary.... and one with just the house itself, walking around inside/outside unoccupied as if you were visiting it for the first time and it was empty. I don't know how I discovered this channel, but I'm fascinated by the homes you feature, but honestly sometimes I'd prefer a walk through the house, without any commentary, maybe even without the music, just ambient sounds.... After all when you a visit a house, there typically isn't an architect there to explain it, and do you really need one? should it really require an explanation at all? This isn't one of those videos where I immediately bail after hearing some of the commentary, but generally speaking, on some videos I'd definitely opt for the silent, only the house version. Regardless enjoy your videos, good stuff
