I cant believe KTM hasnt remade a bike similar to the 640 Adventure. If the 640 was resurrected using the 690 engine, i reckon it would be a sales success. KTM will need to be at the cutting edge of single cylinder adventure bike development now that the Chinese are starting to produce bikes that everyone has been screaming for.

A bit like Porsche deliberately keeping the Boxter/Caymen deliberately underdeveloped to maintain 911 sales and exclusivity despite the former being the dynamically better car. What is so disappointing to me is the complete lack of interest and effort from the Japanese manufacturers in this area. They have a large and mostly loyal supporter base, and they are being let down. The 450 market is the next big thing, as the preorder sales of the 450 Himalayan and CFmoto, and the interest in this KTM show. If the Japanese manufacturers do not lift their game, they will be dominated by the likes of RE, CF moto and others.

Hopefully they will see the writing on the wall and get in on the action. What bothers me is it takes SO DAMN LONG to develop a new motorcycle these days. Seems like we've been hearing about this new KTM 390 for 5 years already and it still ain't for sale. And it was the same deal with the Yamaha T7 before that. If the Japanese haven't started already, it could be years before they catch up.

@udayshome17937 ай бұрын
You're absolutely correct in saying that KTM has to retune the engine for more torque at low and mid-ranges. The adv390 platform has proven successful for them, but the competition is catching up and there are offerings that do the same thing at lower price. So, simply carrying over the same engine tuning from Duke 390 isn't acceptable. In addition, they need to find ways to reduce vibrations. Things like rear luggage rack also needs to be standard. BMWs 310s are also due for updates, hopefully a bigger engine. Let TVS sell the older 310cc engine-based models under their moniker.

I would have thought, styling aside, the RE Himalayan 450 is the direct competitor, its already here and at a price KTM will struggle to beat. Then there is the MT 450 from CFMoto, the 490 twin that KTM dumped and the direct competitor to the 390 Adventure at a bargain price. I think the KTM 390 Adventure platform might be in a bit of trouble by the time it arrives except for the fans of Orange. I think they left the old model redevelopment 12-18 months too late.

The motorcycle market, especially for bikes under 500cc, appears to be shifting towards India and China. Examining the specifications of the MT 450, with its 450cc twin engine, 44 NM of torque and horsepower, a dry weight of 175 kg, and adjustable KYB dampers, it's evident that competing based on price and specs alone is no longer viable..

It is in KTM's best interests to make a small capacity adventure bike that is lacking in certain key areas (such as 19" front wheel instead of 21"). If they made an awesome lightweight adventure bike, who would buy an 890 at nearly double the price? It also goes against their bigger is better mantra. They went from the 950 Adventure, to the 990, to the 1190 and now the 1290 Adventure. If the 1290 is "best" adventure bike KTM makes, how can a 400cc adventure bike at 1/3rd the price be any good? @@Jay-hv4lb yes, the 800 is shocking lightweight. But doesnt have the name brand on the suspension and brakes. While the 450 has well known suspension parts like KYB. I have never heard of the suspension on the 800 before now. Remarkable how light they got it. Will be interesting on how it holds up. For sure one to watch.

@@drzrider3440 actually 800x comes with kyb suspension. Look at how kyb screwed up by damaging shim stack in tuareg 660 forks and still havent fixed it for 2 years. I am waiting for 800x reliability tests and if its fine i am buying one for sure

Thanks for the vid. Best I can tell KTM is going to miss the mark again. But I guess you never know. They're never going to get high torque out of that 390. Nothing like that DR650. And in these videos the bike still looks like it's small. And I'm pretty sure those are still 19 and 17 inch wheels. They always put small dudes on these smaller bikes to make them look bigger. And if that exhaust stays low like that, it's a big no from me. I would rather take my scrambler 400x off-road then that thing.

Ride-by-wire - expensive to replace if broken and potentially unreliable. Try dealing with that if you're lost in MiddleofNowhereistan. Why??? Who needs it on a moderately powered bike - don't need any rider modes or TC. Same stupid decision with the Himalayan.
@jakeviolet21957 ай бұрын
The worst part of rider modes and aids like traction control and ABS is they automatically reset every time you turn off the bike! It makes it impossible to ride offroad. Every time you stop to take a piss, you have to monkey with a bunch of settings before setting off again. And if you forget you end up in a ditch. Nanny state regulations and techno feature-creep are ruining motorcycling.
@clivedarwell57327 ай бұрын
@@jakeviolet2195 Surely it's only ABS that's mandatory and often simple enough to switch ON/OFF - I'd more suggest it's big companies pushing expensively priced technology at people and leaving us with no choice other than to spend more money. How many large/mid range ADVs have low-tech (T7 only) and 90% of that tech is non-mandatory

Turning a road bike into an ADV or dual sport with serious off road capability hasn't been a really good idea since the 70's. I get why KTM are doing it, along with most other manufacturers, eeking out as many models from a single platform as possible to recoup R&D. And the ADV/Dual Sport/Scrambler market is very in vogue at the moment, but will one based off a road bike make a good off road version? Based on the plethora of examples currently in the market the answer is no. These bikes will be fine on dirt roads, but I've ridden a Benelli Leoncino 500 & Aprilia Shiver 750, both with road tyres, on dirt roads & they were both fine too. It's the gnarly stuff that's the real test & I doubt that they'd do well. I'd much rather have seen KTM use their 350 or 450 platform as a starting point for an ADV & dual sport offering.

Would be a shame if ktm built the 390 enduro R off the 390 adv platform with such a heavy weight. Perhaps this 21” wheel bike is the 390 adv R…. Otherwise the 390 enduro R would weigh more than thr 690 enduro R 🤦🏻 Both lightweight and low cost is possible, as both honda and kawi have done it… the klx300 is 137kg wet and this new 390 motor is rather lightweight, only a few kgs heavier than the kawi 300 motor.

@@jakeviolet2195 correct. For trails, singles AFAK will still deliver a better experience. For some that do 70% pavement and 30% trail a dual cylinder may be a better bet.

Cfmoto 450 is around 176 Kg dry, so not big difference with the 390. How could be a single cylinder so fat as a twin? Also, reving the engine up to 10.000 rpm just to start moving from a stop is not my final erotic fantasy...
