I cant believe KTM hasnt remade a bike similar to the 640 Adventure. If the 640 was resurrected using the 690 engine, i reckon it would be a sales success. KTM will need to be at the cutting edge of single cylinder adventure bike development now that the Chinese are starting to produce bikes that everyone has been screaming for.

@SupermotoCentral it only lasted a couple of years which was a shock. As you said, it was a step in the right direction but still didnt have any wind protection. The trouble with the 690/701 platform is that they are ridiculously expensive in bare bones factory spec, then require thousands extra to adventurise them

@@SupermotoCentralI looked at one of these but it’s wide and looks odd. I’d sooner have a Rade Garage range extender giving almost 20 litres and spend the rest on a rally tower for better protection. I suspect the real reason they don’t do this is to protect the 890 Adventure and Husqvarna 901 market. A bit like Porsche deliberately keeping the Boxter/Caymen deliberately underdeveloped to maintain 911 sales and exclusivity despite the former being the dynamically better car. I have a “naked” 701 and an “adventurised” 690 in the US. Much lower weight is the driver. My 890 (a great bike) is road biased and at over 210kg still a heavy bike.

What is so disappointing to me is the complete lack of interest and effort from the Japanese manufacturers in this area. They have a large and mostly loyal supporter base, and they are being let down. The 450 market is the next big thing, as the preorder sales of the 450 Himalayan and CFmoto, and the interest in this KTM show. If the Japanese manufacturers do not lift their game, they will be dominated by the likes of RE, CF moto and others.

Hopefully they will see the writing on the wall and get in on the action. What bothers me is it takes SO DAMN LONG to develop a new motorcycle these days. Seems like we've been hearing about this new KTM 390 for 5 years already and it still ain't for sale. And it was the same deal with the Yamaha T7 before that. If the Japanese haven't started already, it could be years before they catch up.

If they make a 390 Adv, with quality components, fully adjustable suspension, and a 21/18 wheelset… holy hell that will be one sweet bike. If they treat it like every other sub-450 adv/ds, by slapping on budget components and suspension, it’ll be a swing and a miss.
@udayshome1793
@udayshome1793 7 ай бұрын
You're absolutely correct in saying that KTM has to retune the engine for more torque at low and mid-ranges. The adv390 platform has proven successful for them, but the competition is catching up and there are offerings that do the same thing at lower price. So, simply carrying over the same engine tuning from Duke 390 isn't acceptable. In addition, they need to find ways to reduce vibrations. Things like rear luggage rack also needs to be standard. BMWs 310s are also due for updates, hopefully a bigger engine. Let TVS sell the older 310cc engine-based models under their moniker.

I would have thought, styling aside, the RE Himalayan 450 is the direct competitor, its already here and at a price KTM will struggle to beat. Then there is the MT 450 from CFMoto, the 490 twin that KTM dumped and the direct competitor to the 390 Adventure at a bargain price. I think the KTM 390 Adventure platform might be in a bit of trouble by the time it arrives except for the fans of Orange. I think they left the old model redevelopment 12-18 months too late.

Agree! Getting so late robs them, hell lot of lead in the market. RE is already in the market with Himalayan 450, Triumph is already down KTM's throat with its 400 series (may introduce Tiger 400, sooner than later) along with what the Chinese are throwing at the face of the world. One needs to evolve faster than ever!

Yep! With like 500 pre orders already taken for the 450 Himalayan, KTM has missed the boat, particularly that the Himalayan is a known quantity of being much more off road capable and the price point is so good. I was waiting for the 2025 KTM but I don't think I would until next year. If Royal Enfield releases the tubeless tyre version of the 450 this year in Australia, then KTM has lost me.

@@jakeviolet2195 Keep telling yourself that. The number of preorders alone for the Himalayan + Cf 450 would suggest that you are mistaken. Being well over a year late to the party won't help. And then there is price, which is ultra important at this end of the market. Now if the KTM is considerably better than both in all areas they may carve out a market even if more expensive.

I am probably the only one, but I love the underslung exhaust. The standard space of putting an exhaust is always in the way of luggage and is the first thing to get damaged when you crash. I don't understand why motorcyclist believe the exhaust may not be submerged in water (that it would affect the bike's water crossing ability) but 4x4 people have no issue driving with the exhaust under water. Maybe someone can shed some light.
@rdmsta
@rdmsta 6 ай бұрын
it’s the ground clearance you loose having exhaust running under the bike. the current 390 has the same and very little ground clearance is one of the big issues. they have at least added clearance in these new models even with under slung exhaust.

I'm on a Himalayan 411 at the moment, looking to upgrade for a bit more power, but the pickings for smaller-engine adv bikes are quite slim unless you go for an enduro-machine with some touring-equipment (which comes with its own cons), so seeing the 390 Enduro still alive is great to see. If it has tubeless tires and a properly tuned engine, this will be a top contender for my next bike. I think ~180 kg would be perfect because I have a Himalayan 411 right now which is quite a bit heavier and quite a bit less powerful and while I would like it to be a bit lighter, the weight is manageable and I honestly wouldn't want it too much lighter because I already get blown around on the highway a fair bit when it's windy.

It seems that Japanese manufacturers such as Honda and Yamaha have conceded the competitive edge in producing motorcycles to rivals like KTM and CF Moto, a disappointing development indeed. The motorcycle market, especially for bikes under 500cc, appears to be shifting towards India and China. Examining the specifications of the MT 450, with its 450cc twin engine, 44 NM of torque and horsepower, a dry weight of 175 kg, and adjustable KYB dampers, it's evident that competing based on price and specs alone is no longer viable..

Even if KTM applied the variable intake and cam designs from the 690 they will be hard pressed to produce the torque of the “longer stroke” DR-Z or DR engines. (Adding flywheel weight would help, but then how many “Orange Fans” are looking for a slower revving bike.?) The two things KTM have going for them; They know how to build a light weight bike and excellent adjustable suspension. So only time will tell if they are building a serious enduro bike, or just a styling exercise around the Duke engine 🤔.

KTM makes great bikes for racing but most of us agree they are not the best choice for long term reliability and most of us have been burnt by them for many reasons(that I will not get into). It blows my mind that bringing China into the equation is accepted upon enthusiast today. I remember when Japan was frowned upon but atleast they have a proven track record. Im thinking a CRF700RL with a comfortable seat, more oil capacity and E.F.I would sure get everybodys attention.Maybe one of the other big four will suprise us this year. It is in KTM's best interests to make a small capacity adventure bike that is lacking in certain key areas (such as 19" front wheel instead of 21"). If they made an awesome lightweight adventure bike, who would buy an 890 at nearly double the price? It also goes against their bigger is better mantra. They went from the 950 Adventure, to the 990, to the 1190 and now the 1290 Adventure. If the 1290 is "best" adventure bike KTM makes, how can a 400cc adventure bike at 1/3rd the price be any good? It's all about the money.

Not really a fan. KTM really needs to take. Look at whats going on, and what people want. AKA the 490. Hopefully someday it will come out. Im guessing CF Moto will have their before KTM does. Meaning they 500cc engine CF Moto is developing. We should see that 55HP engine soon installed in a Ibex 500MT. For now, I already put my down payment on the CF Moto Ibex 450MT. So im now commited to the Chinese company...specially since I 3 dealers very close to me for these. And have been CF Moto/KTM dealers now for a few years. So i have excellent dealer support. Sorry KTM. Too little, too late. Thanks for the moto news as usual.

Thanks for the vid. Best I can tell KTM is going to miss the mark again. But I guess you never know. They're never going to get high torque out of that 390. Nothing like that DR650. And in these videos the bike still looks like it's small. And I'm pretty sure those are still 19 and 17 inch wheels. They always put small dudes on these smaller bikes to make them look bigger. And if that exhaust stays low like that, it's a big no from me. I would rather take my scrambler 400x off-road then that thing.

Ride-by-wire - expensive to replace if broken and potentially unreliable. Try dealing with that if you're lost in MiddleofNowhereistan. Why??? Who needs it on a moderately powered bike - don't need any rider modes or TC. Same stupid decision with the Himalayan.
@jakeviolet2195
@jakeviolet2195 7 ай бұрын
The worst part of rider modes and aids like traction control and ABS is they automatically reset every time you turn off the bike! It makes it impossible to ride offroad. Every time you stop to take a piss, you have to monkey with a bunch of settings before setting off again. And if you forget you end up in a ditch. Nanny state regulations and techno feature-creep are ruining motorcycling.
@clivedarwell5732
@clivedarwell5732 7 ай бұрын
@@jakeviolet2195 Surely it's only ABS that's mandatory and often simple enough to switch ON/OFF - I'd more suggest it's big companies pushing expensively priced technology at people and leaving us with no choice other than to spend more money. How many large/mid range ADVs have low-tech (T7 only) and 90% of that tech is non-mandatory

Turning a road bike into an ADV or dual sport with serious off road capability hasn't been a really good idea since the 70's. I get why KTM are doing it, along with most other manufacturers, eeking out as many models from a single platform as possible to recoup R&D. And the ADV/Dual Sport/Scrambler market is very in vogue at the moment, but will one based off a road bike make a good off road version? Based on the plethora of examples currently in the market the answer is no. These bikes will be fine on dirt roads, but I've ridden a Benelli Leoncino 500 & Aprilia Shiver 750, both with road tyres, on dirt roads & they were both fine too. It's the gnarly stuff that's the real test & I doubt that they'd do well. I'd much rather have seen KTM use their 350 or 450 platform as a starting point for an ADV & dual sport offering.

Would be a shame if ktm built the 390 enduro R off the 390 adv platform with such a heavy weight. Perhaps this 21” wheel bike is the 390 adv R…. Otherwise the 390 enduro R would weigh more than thr 690 enduro R 🤦🏻 Both lightweight and low cost is possible, as both honda and kawi have done it… the klx300 is 137kg wet and this new 390 motor is rather lightweight, only a few kgs heavier than the kawi 300 motor.
